This week, investigative journalists — Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — broke news that a second Jane Doe case had been filed against Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller, accusing him of sexually abusing a 14-year-old student at Cathedral Hall Academy (formerly known as Grand Strand Academy), a school owned JP's father Wayne Miller, who is named as a co-defendant in the case.  In 1999, when JP Miller was 20 years old he allegedly molested the child after inviting her to play piano with him alone in the church sanctuary. The girl told a teacher about what JP allegedly did and instead of the school offering the child help, she was forced to write “I will not lie about JP Miller” 5,000 times.  Mandy and Liz break down the latest allegations against the Millers and share text messages between JP, his ex-wife and Mica from 2022 or before that addresses the child sexual abuse allegations against JP.  Also on the show, part one of the history of the Millers' alleged scheme to use their school as a staging ground for abuse. Plus an update on the Justice for Mica protesters and JP's frivolous lawsuits against them. Let's dive in...

Cup of Justice creator Mandy Matney welcomes filmmaker Erin Lee Carr to discuss high-profile cases involving suicide, online harassment, and domestic violence. They share personal experiences and insights into the legal and ethical questions surrounding these issues, emphasizing the importance of empathy and accountability. They also debate the shortcomings of the system in addressing these problems and the need for a comprehensive approach. Throughout the conversation, they highlight the psychological toll of working in true crime and the importance of ethics and empathy in documentary filmmaking. Erin is amazingly brilliant and Mandy was a fan of Erin long before their worlds collided on the Murdaugh story in 2021. You may have heard of a deadline story about a project they are working on bringing to life… Erin has been a bright light in a dark world of true crime — an example of someone who can do good in the true crime world and succeed while sticking to their own ethics and values. Like Liz and Mandy, Erin gravitates toward complicated true crime stories and tells them in a way that is truthful, victim-focused, and thought-provoking. As police are still investigating the five deaths that have been tied to the Murdaugh family, we're trying to answer a big question in this case — what happened to the money? Following the money has led us down some strange, unexpected paths in this story — especially in the last week when it was discovered that Alex paid $110,000 for a funeral home. This funeral home is linked to one of Murdaugh's alleged victims and also linked to a funeral director that once sawed a man's leg's off because he was too tall to fit in the casket. For our latest episode, Erin and Elizabeth talk to the two-time-Emmy-nominated film director Erin Lee Carr, whose work features several acclaimed true crime titles for HBO, including Mommy Dead & Dearest, At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal, I Love You Now Die: The Commonwealth V. Michelle Carter, and Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall. For Netflix, Carr directed Britney Vs. Spears, about Britney Spears' quest for freedom from her conservatorship controlled by her father. Erin Carr is the daughter of the esteemed New York Times media columnist David Carr, who died suddenly in 2015 at the age of 58 when Erin was just 26. David Carr had experienced what his daughter describes in our interview as “the rise and the fall and the rise,” grappling in his twenties with a crack cocaine addiction amidst the beginnings of what would become a meteoric journalism career. The premature births of Erin and her twin sister helped him get and stay sober, all of which is chronicled in his bestselling 2008 memoir The Night of the Gun. In Erin's own memoir about her father, 2019's All That You Leave Behind, she writes about the special bond she had with him over their shared career ambitions. And, as Erin would realize in her later twenties, their shared addiction to substances. Six years sober and engaged to a Washington Post media columnist (a similarity she thinks her father would have a field day with), Erin talks about the constant encouragement her dad bestowed on her—his toughness and tenderness—and shares the email he sent her after she was once fired that should probably be anthologized in parenting manuals. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support

In today's episode, we take a closer look at the documentary, Britney vs. Spears and speak with the film's director, Erin Lee Carr. Britney Spears was a mega-superstar and favorite of the paparazzi. Then Britney suffered a few very public meltdowns, the singer's parents and management team went to court to secure control of her vast fortune and life. The conservatorship allowed others to manage Britney's personal life and career. A process designed to protect the elderly and infirm was being used to control a celebrity who continued to make millions for the people holding the reins.

This week on End Credits, we dive again into the world of celebrity scandal, but this one is also a true crime story and a social justice case. We're going to talk about the issues raised in the new Netflix documentary Britney Vs Spears, and we're going to cover the back half of the James Bond movie series in our ultimate ranking of the films featuring Britain's greatest spy. This Wednesday, October 6, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Peter Salmon will discuss: Run the Series: Jams Bond Part 2 of 2. This weekend, No Time to Die opens in theatres everywhere, the 25th in the series of canon James Bond movies. Some have been good, some have been bad, most have been okay, but this week, we're going to get into the Top 12. There's a lot of Sean Connery here, and so is the reboot that brought us Daniel Craig, the last real Cold War centric Bond, and the iconic one-off where 007 was played by an Australian male model. REVIEW: Britney Vs Spears (2021). There's been a cottage industry of documentaries about Britney Spears and the conservancy she's been under for the last 13 years; the "Free Britney" movement has been well represented on a lot of streaming platforms. In this new Netflix doc, filmmaker Erin Lee Carr focuses not on Britney, but the messed up legal circumstances that effectively put the Princess of Pop under the thumb of her father, and, allegedly, his abuses. So does "Free Britney" benefit from her story getting the Netflix true crime treatment? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Angela and Bob hit up a “True Crime” documentary and revisit the director Erin Lee Carr who you might remember directed “Mommy Dead and Dearest” which we covered waaaaaaaaaaay back early in the bad audio era of the show. A severely depressed young man by the name of Conrad Roy III was found to have taken his own life in his truck outside of a K-Mart. Police later discovered an intense exchange of thousands of text with a girl named Michelle Carter. Suddenly, she is charged with a crime. We’re shooting the shit on the 2-part docuseries “I Love You, Now Die”. Did eyebrows really talk Conrad into taking his own life, or was Conrad just fulfilling a destiny he had long set out for himself? If someone told you to jump off of the Fish Island bridge and you did it, is that person is responsible? Also…what does that lady in the Patriots windbreaker think about it? Journalist Jesse Barron shares his insight on this very difficult and complex case. In July 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy died by suicide in his car at a parking lot in Fairhaven, Mass. Police soon discovered a series of alarming text messages from his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter, that seemed to encourage him to kill himself. This discovery sparked sensational headlines nationwide, leading to a trial that raised difficult questions about technology, social media and mental health, while asking if one person can be held responsible for the suicide of another. In 2012, teens Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy fell in love. They lived hours apart and met in person no more than five times, but exchanged thousands of texts over a two-year period. After Roy was found dead in his car in July 2014, what appeared to be a standard case of suicide by carbon-monoxide intoxication took a shocking turn when investigators discovered alarming text messages on his phone. Carter, 17 at the time, had urged Roy to kill himself, even after he had second thoughts and removed himself from his car.  Directed by Erin Lee Carr (HBO’s At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal and Mommy Dead and Dearest) I Love You, Now Die explores the complicated relationship between Carter and Roy, drawing on some of the thousands of texts they exchanged over two years to chronicle their courtship and its tragic consequences. Featuring unprecedented access to the families, friends and communities that were forever changed by this unusual case, the documentary explores the changing nature of the justice system today, following a story that has wider implications for society at large, both online and in real life. The film presents a well-rounded look at a bizarre tale that was a deadly convergence of mental illness, loneliness, pop culture and technology. In July 2017, Michelle Carter was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the suicide of Roy. In August 2017, she was found guilty and began her 15-month prison sentence in February 2019, following a failed appeal. I Love You, Now Die includes footage from Michelle Carter’s trial, where the filmmakers had the only camera allowed in court and supplied the pool camera for this historic case. It also features interviews with key individuals in the story, including: Conrad Roy’s immediate family; Joseph Cataldo, Michelle Carter’s defense attorney; Dr. Peter Breggin, an expert witness for the defense; police detectives; and journalists who covered the case extensively. The documentary premiered at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. I Love You, Now Die is directed and produced by Erin Lee Carr; produced by Andrew Rossi; co-producer, Alison Byrne; original music, Ian Hultquist; cinematographer, Bryan Sarkinen; editor, Andrew Coffman; executive producer, Sheila Nevins; senior producer, Sara Bernstein.

Erin Lee Carr has had a busy year, but I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs. Michelle Carter proves she's not too busy for nuance. The two-part documentary film, airing this week on HBO, looks at both sides of Conrad Roy III's tragic death, acknowledges the human instinct to find someone to blame, and takes us back to our own gusty teenage girlhoods. "Enjoyable" isn't the right word, but it's evocative for sure. Paul Schrader's late-eighties look at Patty Hearst and the SLA is less so, but we're not sure if that's down to a certain failure of nerve on the script's part, or the fact that we've just consumed too much Hearst-iana at this late date for any biopic to move the ball. Good performances don't save what is, here in 2019, a superfluous narrative -- but WE might save you some time/room on your watch list in The Blotter Presents, Episode 103. In Mommy Dead and Dearest, provocative documentarian Erin Lee Carr (HBO’s Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop) explores a grisly tale where nothing is quite what it seems. Following Dee Dee’s brutal murder, a mysterious status ended up on her facebook page announcing “The bitch is dead,” which investigators used to track her daughter, Gypsy, to a house in Wisconsin. Gypsy, who had been ill and confined to a wheelchair for nearly her entire life, was the subject of much concern in their community. But once she was brought into the courthouse, everybody was shocked to discover that she could walk after all. The inspiring tale of a mother and her sick daughter turned into something much darker than anybody anticipated, with Gypsy a victim of one of psychology’s most controversial conditions: Munchausen by proxy. Carr digs deeper into this rabbit hole of deception with unprecedented access, and weaves a tale that proves that truth really is stranger than fiction. MOMMY DEAD AND DEAREST-Erin Lee Carr.
