The nation-states of the greater Middle East are a contentious group, with a long, complicated history and even longer memories. Spanning some 17 countries from Iran in the east to Turkey in the west, including North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean states, and the Arabian peninsula — the region is riven by political, religious, & ethnic conflicts. Yet the music of the Middle East shows a broad similarity of instruments, scales, rhythms and formats that cut across national boundaries and create a kind of super-cultural unity. Today, progressive middle eastern musicians are promoting a non-political form of communication through their music, bringing together traditional and electronic instruments to create a shared experience of beauty and soulfulness. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another journey in the contemporary Middle Eastern soundscape, on a program called EQUILIBRIUM 2. Music is by MERÇAN DEDE, SYRIANA, DHAFER YOUSSEF, LIAN ENSEMBLE w/DJIVAN GASPARYAN, ALBERTO IGLESIAS, ANOUAR BRAHEM, DAVID PARSONS & JON MARK. It takes increasing effort, but if we can just turn away from the political chaos that has overtaken the Middle East for the moment, we can still hear the expression of artistic traditions that have been evolving for over 5000 years. From source cultures in Persia, Arabia and North Africa come instruments and musical traditions. Today, both native and expatriate artists are working to extend these traditions and adapt them to the world of contemporary music. It's an effort that aims for harmony and understanding in the face of dissonance and division: cultural in the best sense — a human treasure to be loved and shared. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey to the quiet heart of Middle Eastern music, on a program called DOOR OF SILENCE. Music is by MERCAN DEDE, OMAR FARUK TEKBILEK, AZAM ALI & LOGA RAMIN TORKIAN, ANOUAR BRAHEM, and DHAFER YOUSSEF. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Underlying the political and religious differences that have provoked centuries of unrest in the Middle East and North Africa is the landscape—an austere region of desert and mountains, transected by great rivers: the Nile, the Tigris, the Euphrates. This environment, along with centuries of cultural exchange, accounts for a rough musical unity across countries and ethnicities. Thus the music of Turkey, Israel and Palestine has similarities with the Arabic and Berber music of North Africa, and the Persian traditions of Iran. Today, progressive artists working within these traditions have created a Virtual Middle East, a cultural blend that effectively ignores ethnic, religious and political differences, and brings us an image of what a peaceful future in the region might sound like. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, soulful sounds from the Virtual Middle East, on a program called DESERT SOUL. Music is by MICHEL BANABILA, DHAFER YOUSSEF, MARJAN VAHDAT, NIYAZ, ARCHETRIBE, and ANOUAR BRAHEM. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

RFI Planète Radio is sponsoring a video contest, and we want you to enter! Planète Radio is an RFI department that reaches out to remote populations around the world. For the fourth consecutive year, Planète Radio is holding a video competition on environmental issues. The theme of this year's competition is “Show how they feel”: You are to create a 3-minute video about climate change, the environment, pollution - told by the people it affects. Here's what Planète Radio says about the competition: “Environmental deterioration, climate change, pollution, everybody's talking about it. But amid articles, figures, and expert reports, what do we really know about the feelings of the people already impacted? The video clips produced by the ePOP community in more than 50 countries allow us to hear from those who never ask for anything yet have seen it all - those who are already living with these changes that deteriorate their quality of life.” Your project can be intergenerational: Get together with your grandfather, your aunt, someone older in your community and ask them how they feel about what is happening to their surroundings or to the place where they grew up. Your project can also be about how you, or people your age, feel about climate change, given that your future will be affected by this phenomenon. Gather the words of those around you who are confronting the environmental crisis in their daily lives, investing, researching, and questioning the urgency of deploying solutions to face it.  Prizes for this year's competition include equipment grants from 1,000 to 4,500 euros, as well as ePOP promotion kits and other goodies. For competition guidelines and more information about the four different categories you can enter, click here. You can also write to us at english.service@rfi.fr if you need more help. We're very proud that the winner in the ePOP 2020 RFI Club category went to an English language club – Adita Prithika's RFI Agnichiragu Phoenix Club in Tamil Nadu, India. Be sure you include your RFI Listeners Club membership number (most of them begin with an A, followed by a number) in the questionnaire, or I will have to click “Decline”, which I don't like to do! This week's quiz: On 5  March, we had an early tribute to International Women's Day, which is celebrated every year on 8 March – and to that end, the quiz was about the holiday. As I noted then, International Women's Day has a long history, with different countries proposing a Women's Day in the early 20th century. I asked you to do a little research and find out when the earliest version of Women's Day occurred, who organized it, and in which country. The answer is: According to the United Nations' article “Background: International Women's Day”, the earliest version of Women's Day was organized by the Socialist Party of New York, in New York City, on 28 February 1909.  Then, at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference, the German delegates proposed an annual Women's Day which was adopted by various countries over the years. International Women's Day became a global holiday when it was added to the calendar of official United Nations Days in 1977. The winners are: RFI Listeners Club members Rachid Dahmani from M'sila, Algeria; Tasneem Saleh from Nilphamari, Bangladesh; Arne Timm from Harjumaa, Estonia; Radhakrishna Pillai N. from Kerala State in India, and RFI English listener Lata Khondaker from Bogura, Bangladesh. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “Dance with Waves” by Anouar Brahem, performed by Brahem and his quartet; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “Africa Unity a Must” by Femi Kuti, performed by Kuti and Positive Force, and “Turbulences” by Michel Portal, performed by Portal and his ensemble. 73. Mohamed-Dhia Hammami on persisting systemic economic injustice in Tunisia

In this edition of Free City Radio we hear from Mohamed-Dhia Hammami, a PhD student and social activist from Tunisia focused on detailing economic injustice and labour union movements. Currently Mohamed is at Syracuse University and speaks in this exchange on the persisting systemic economic injustice in Tunisia post 2011 revolution. Importantly Mohamed places the recent events in Tunisia, the actions of President Kais Saied, who seized political power in what social movements in Tunisia define as a coup. Mohamed speaks about the ways that persisting political crisis in Tunisia is linked to the fact that all major political parities in the country haven't seriously addressed the neo-liberal economic policies in the country that were first put into serious practice during the Ben Ali dictatorship. Despite the undercutting of democracy in recent months, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, recently spoke by phone with President Saied, providing political clout to a leader who established their current power within the context of a military coup. Thank you to Mohamed for joining the show and to Safa Chebbi for helping facilitate this interview. Music on the edition today is by Anouar Brahem. The mystical, inward-facing order of Sufism goes back to the very beginning of the Islamic religion in the 8th century. It has parallels to the venerable traditions of Buddhist and Hindu mysticism, and aims for direct union with God by purifying the heart. The work of the Persian Sufi poet RUMI has achieved worldwide popularity for its beauty and insight, and a body of Sufi music evolved to accompany religious practices and meditation—most famously the "whirling dervishes" of the Mevlevi order in Turkey—creating a genre that's not only alive today, but producing new strains of spiritual music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we revisit the contemplative heart of Middle Eastern music, on a program called 'SUFI SOUL 3.' Music by ZIKR PROJECT, DHAFER YOUSSEF, ANOUAR BRAHEM, ELIYAHU SILLS, ALEX KHASKIN, MICHEL BANABILA with MEMET POLAT, ÜMLAUT, & SALAR ASID, DEREK & BRANDON FIECHTER, ABE HATHOT, and PAUL AVGERINOS & OMAR FARUK TEKBILEK.
