(8:35am) Col. William "Burner" Dunn, former military attack helicopter pilot, shares his insights into the tragic collision in Washington, DC. Colonel Dunn flew in many of the world's deadliest hot spots in dozens of combat missions as an attack helicopter pilot. He and his team currently support U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM), Marine Forces Central Command (MARCENT), U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM), U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), and Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT) around the world. In the aftermath of the devastating aviation disaster in Washington, DC—the worst in America since 2009—decorated veteran military attack helicopter pilot Colonel William “Burner” Dunn provides expert analysis. Colonel Dunn is a combat-proven pilot who has flown dozens of missions in some of the world’s most volatile war zones. He shares his no-nonsense, informed perspective on how this tragedy could have occurred in one of the world’s most heavily monitored air corridors. His military helicopter pilot expertise and credibility make him an invaluable voice in understanding this tragic event. He is a military attack helicopter pilot who has flown in and around Washington, DC. With decades of experience navigating high-stakes aerial operations, Colonel Dunn can tell us more about: -Why this military helicopter training flight might have veered into Reagan National Airport's flight path -The strengths and vulnerabilities of the Blackhawk UH-60 helicopter that collided with the American Eagle flight as it was about to land in Reagan National Airport -The 12th Aviation Battalion, based out of Fort Belvoir, which provides helicopter transportation and “technical rescue support” to the National Capital Region -Whether Washington, DC’s crowded airspace—encompassing Reagan National, Dulles, BWI, Andrews Air Force Base, and more—poses systemic risks to aviation safety William Dunn is the President of Strategic Resilience Group, LLC. He started the company in July 2016 after his retirement from a 33-year career in the United States Marine Corps, during which he rose through the ranks of Private through Sergeant, and Second Lieutenant through Colonel. I did not do a Sunday Morning Music mix at all last year
Energy is such a profound thing. It's something that's both silent and unspoken but also always present and within our ability to control. It's everyone's duty to be mindful of that to ensure that what we're sharing is...good and uplifting. I keep that in mind when deciding what to share with you. I've also wanted the energy of these mixes to walk a fine line; perfect for both 2AM and 2PM. Obviously what we're all doing at those two different times are very different things. I use my own real world experiences to guide me on the music choices here. And what I've found is that the songs you'll hear here are beautiful pieces to have in the background during the day to (subconsciously) affect our day and also have in the forefront during the night to (consciously) drive the fun. I hope that the energy, the vibes and the messages you hear on this mix lift you up and set you free. I have no shortage of favorites on this set. I set the set off with the Kygo produced "Love Me Now Or Lose Me Later" -- a truly powerful heart-tugger. From there I mix into "One Day" by Dutch emo-pop band Haevn. They are truly one of my favorite bands ever. Their sound is rich, authentic and emotionally powerful. They're not really known here in the Americas so I'm really proud and fortunate to share them with you. Find them and stream them. They're incredible. Otherwise, I've got 17 songs mixed here and have managed to find 5 incredible remakes for the set: Chasing Cars (#5), You're Not Alone (#10), Sweet Disposition (#12), With Or Without You (#14) and Wonderful Life (#15). It's so hard to find remakes that are tastefully done and keep the spirit of the original. So I feel happy to have found these. Pay special attention to the remake of With Or Without You by U2. Initially I assumed this would be typically not great. How pleasantly surprise I was to find this remake really amazing. It's remixed by organic house master DSF. In closing the set I chose the gorgeous "Crazy Love" by Above & Beyond featuring vocals by none other than Zoe Johnston. By the time you reach the end of the set the *energy" will have quietly risen from chill and peaceful to powerfully melodic and progressive. Hopefully, if I've done my job right, you'll not even notice the energy quietly rising to crescendo. As always....this set was mixed with every ounce of love I've got to give. A couple of tunes were the inspiration for cranking out another Sunday Morning mix. First is the lead-off track - A Sunday Kind of Love from Etta James. It's simply a great tune that I'm surprised I haven't used before. Next is an track from 1971 that I'd never heard of until a few weeks ago. I stumbled on an Instagram reel that talked about the gentle beauty of "Curry Rice" by Kenji Endo. I immediately fell in love with it and the rest of the album. That's where the mix started and from there it follows the usual formula - some jazz, some ambient, some folk - all flowing together in a sweet Sunday mix. Time sure does fly by. Here are some songs by the grandkids when they first were learning to play instruments. 2 and 4 year olds banging out the percussion instruments and ukuleles and guitars strumming wildly, but always beautiful voices. It was some of my best days ever teaching them how to make music and playing and singing together. Now half of the grandkids are out of state and the ones nearby are getting older and have jobs and other activities. Their voices have changed and deepened. And the richness of their voices is something special to hear. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/susan-engstr-mcauliffe/message

It was a little more than ten years ago that I posted my first Sunday Morning Music mix. I had not intended on making it a regular series but the mix did very well on Mixcloud and is partially responsible for starting the explosion of followers the Low Light Mixes feed got in the following years. So I've been creating roughly two per years for 10 years. Yikes! It's kind of crazy to think about how long I've been making these mixes. This one follows the same formula - some ambient cuts, some jazzy tracks, a few vocal tunes, all resulting in a mellow vibe perfect for sipping coffee on a Sunday morning. The other day I was going through some of the music that the grandkids and I have done the past year. After watching the news and seeing all the sadness going on in Ukraine, I just needed a little happy time. And that usually can be found playing music with the grandkids. But it was a day when that wasn't an option, so I dug into some of the past songs we have done together and recorded just for the fun of it. There were lots of rowdy songs and old bluegrass songs they have been taught. Some like Rocky Top, Mountain Dew, and the classic gospel ones like Amazing Grass and Nothing But the Blood of Jesus. And there are the old rock classics like, Sloop John B and Brown Eyed Girl. All done in the classic off key, rowdy guitar, ukulele, banjo grandkids' style. But I came across this song we did in a quiet moment when it was just a couple of the older kids singing and playing instruments. It is the old Judd's song, “Love Can Build A Bridge”. I stopped and played it a few times, remembering that night we were together singing it and how the grandkids' voices blended together. There were the girls and then Eyasu with his adolescent changing beautiful deep sound. It got me thinking of the world today and all the bombing and destruction that is going on in Ukraine. We so need a bridge of love in Ukraine. We all need “to whisper love so loudly, so every heart will understand, that love and only love can join the tribes of man”. Here is from a special night of music with the grandkids. It is Love can Build a Bridge. Enjoy. Love Can Build A Bridge Songwriters: Paul Overstreet / John Jarvis / Naomi Judd I'd gladly walk across the desert with no shoes upon my feet To share with you the last bite of bread I had to eat I would swim out to save you in your sea of broken dreams When all your hopes are sinking, let me show you what love means Love can build a bridge Between your heart and mine Love can build a bridge Don't you think it's time? Don't you think it's time? I would whisper love so loudly, every heart could understand That love and only love can join the tribes of man I would give my hearts' desire so that you might see The first step is to realize that it all begins with you and me Love can build a bridge Between your heart and mine Love can build a bridge Don't you think it's time? Don't you think it's time? When we stand together, it's our finest hour We can do anything (anything) Anything (anything) Keep believing in the power Love can build a bridge Between your heart and mine Love can build a bridge Don't you think it's time? Don't you think it's time? Don't you think it's time? Don't you think it's time? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/susan-engstr-mcauliffe/message

We're blasting off on the first episode of our new SHMUP miniseries with the shooter that set the mold for horizontal STGs - Konami's Gradius. How did this accidental hit become such a groundbreaking series? What anime movie had a huge influence on the design and weaponry of the Vic Viper? How many aliases do the Gradius and Salamander games have? Is this the most repeated arcade game of all time? No STG would be complete without some talk about Morning Music, board issues, weapon strategy, and the obvious Friends connection. We also cover cheap Jeopardy questions, proctology exams, tiny snipers, a Lake Placid pinball game, and bad Mark Wahlberg quotes.

One of my favorite new indie albums of 2021 is An Overview on Phenomenal Nature by Cassandra Jenkins. It's a mostly fairly quiet, folky album. Except for the last cut which is instrumental with a kind of jazzy/ambient vibe. I knew immediately that I wanted to use it in a Sunday morning mix. Then I realized that it had been more than a year since I'd done a Sunday mix. So here it is - Sunday Morning Music Vol. 21 - Dreamland. It sounds just like the Cassandra Jenkins I described above - jazzy/ambient with a sunny feel. There are two vocal tunes - one by Sam Gendel and the wonderful Dreamland by Joni Mitchell. There's not much else to say other than grab the Sunday paper, a cup of coffee and hang out with this mix. Cheers! I haven't posted a Sunday Morning mix since January and with how much things have changed since then I figured we could all use a mix with that Sunday morning vibe. So here it is #20 in the Sunday Morning Music series. It's mostly new music, with 13 tracks from 2019 & 2020. One of the oddball old cuts is from 1980, John Martyn's "Sweet Little Mystery." I've always liked the tune but I hadn't heard it in a long time until it made an unlikely appearance in the show DEVS. As soon as I heard it I knew I need to include it in a mix. A couple of vocal tracks in the middle seem to fit perfectly with the Sunday vibe but also fit with the messed up times we are living through. The Shards tune has this appropriate lyric - "We know not yet what the future brings But a bird's still a bird without its wings Each day, each day is a curious thing If I can't take flight then inside I'll sing" And then there's Jonsi reminding us to breathe in and breathe out in "Exhale." I've been drinking a ton of coffee as I work from home so maybe I'll say go grab a nice cup of Jasmine tea, a good book, play this mix, and...exhale. Cheers! This mix started with an interesting album I came across this past weekend, Ernest Hood - Neighborhoods. It was originally released in 1975 but was recently rediscovered and rereleased. It's a curious combination of field recordings and early ambient noodling. The result is captivating. https://freedomtospend.bandcamp.com/album/neighborhoods I picked the track "Saturday Morning Doze" as the starting point for a new Sunday morning mix. I noticed it had Fender Rhodes piano type of sound going on. I'm not sure if there is a Fender Rhodes playing or not but it definitely reminded me of the Rhodes sound from the 70s that I love so much. So then the mix changed from a normal Sunday morning mix to a Fender Rhodes 1970s mix. Each track is from the 70s(duh) and has the sound of Fender Rhodes piano in it. While digging up tunes I realized that all the electric piano sounds in this mix might not all be a Fender Rhodes. They could very well be some other vintage electric piano. But I don't care, it's the sound and feel that's important. Longtime listeners will notice a few tunes that I've used before from Steve Hillage, Harold Budd, Brian Eno, and Daryl Hall(yes, that Daryl Hall). I generally try to stay away from using songs in multiple mixes but these cuts fit so perfectly that I couldn't resist. The other odd thing about this mix is the first 45 minutes are instrumental then we go to vocal tunes for the final 17 minutes. It wasn't planned, it just sort of worked out that way. Enjoy this trip back to the 70s. Cheers! The 18th installment in the Sunday Morning Music series is here. It starts with one of my favorite albums of the year - Spirit by Rhye. It's so beautiful and intimate. From there we get some more pretty tunes because that's what I want on Sunday morning - no dark ambient drones here, just pretty and calm. All the tracks are fairly new - the oldest being from 2016, while most are from this year. Sunday morning musings - the cover pic of a cup of coffee reminded me of something. I've noticed in a lot of the science fiction I read that coffee is very important to a lot of characters in sci-fi stories. Many times it's in a post-apocalyptic world and coffee has become rare, a character finds a stash of coffee and it's like striking gold. Or a character is in space and has been traveling for a long time and finally gets to a location that has coffee and again it's like they have found the holy grail. This type of thing happens more often than I would have expected. I wonder if it's because writers drink lots of coffee as they write and they know that coffee is the world's most wonderful liquid(right behind beer). Grab some coffee, interstellar or not, and take a listen to this latest mix. Cheers! I haven't posted a Sunday morning mix in a long time. So here is the first Sunday morning collection of 2019. There's not much to say - it's the typical Sunday morning mix. A little jazz, some ambient, some instrumental, etc. Most of the tunes are fairly new with three exceptions. The cover pic is my backyard, but not from this year as we haven't had much snow at all. Of course I just jinxed it so next week we'll probably get 3 feet. Cheers! Here's the first Sunday Morning Music mix of 2018. Most of the music is new. All of the tracks were released in 2018 with the exception of "To Earth" by Ariwo from 2017 and "Jade Visions" by Bill Evans from 1961. There are no vocal tunes in this mix, which wasn't on purpose, it just sort of works out that way sometimes. Many thanks to the artists and labels for the excellent music that appears in this mix. For this Sunday Morning Music installment I used almost all brand new music. 16 of the 19 tracks are from 2017 & most of those are from the last two months. Two cuts are from 2016. One outlier is from all the way back in 1999. That track is October Sky by Mark Isham. As I was putting the mix together I came up with the title of vol. 15 - October Sky(cuz it's October) and thought that it sounded familiar. I searched my hard drive and sure enough I found October Sky is a soundtrack by Mark Isham from 1999. BTW, it's an excellent movie. So I had to include that one old track in with all the new ones. Also sorry for this not being uploaded on a Sunday morning. Brunch with the kids took priority, then football, the nap. So here it is on Sunday evening. Cheers! I haven't done a Sunday morning mix in quite a while so volume 14 solves that problem. This follows the usual Sunday morning mix template of a few vocal tunes, some ambient tunes and a bit of jazz. I was happy to finally use Shenandoah in a mix. More than a year ago I was at a local high school spring concert and fell in love with the concert band version of this tune. I know it may sound out of place in a Low Light mix but I think it's beauty fits well with the Sunday morning series. In addition to Shenandoah there is new music from Hite, Grails, The Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society, Clocolan and fairly new music from Radiohead & Olafur Arnalds. And a nice old classic from Max Roach & Clifford Brown. Cheers!
