Our partners Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt. Cryer Malt is proud to team up with Yakima Chief Hops to bring the very best Pacific Northwest hops to Australian and Kiwi brewers. We thank Rallings Labels and Stickers for sponsoring this podcast. Brewers, if you are still applying self-adhesive labels to your bottles and cans, and believe that this is a sustainable solution for your packaging needs, you may want to call Rallings Labels, Stickers and Packaging and discuss your options with them. The team at Rallings will walk you through the various options available to you, that are more sustainable than applying self-adhesive labels which don’t help the environment at all. Whilst they do produce self-adhesive labels for many breweries, there is a much better way to ensure that your carbon footprint is lower than what you are currently doing by utilising pre-sleeved cans. This week we speak with with Ben Summons and Nick Boots. Over the last few months Stone & Wood founder Jamie Cook has retired from the business and Ben Summons has stepped up from managing director of Stone & Wood into the role of CEO of the Fermentum group of companies, the overarching business. Nick Boots has in turn been promoted from Stone & Wood’s head of sales to General Manager. The changing of the guard comes at a significant time for the business, as the industry faces crowding at the smaller end of the industry, and takovers at the larger end. Overseas, the largest craft breweries have run into headwinds, the craft beer segment is fragmented with a rapid proliferation of styles and competition from other categories and new and emerging categories such as hard seltzer. As you’ll here both Ben and Nick have extensive careers in and out of the beer industry, including time at CUB overlapping with founders Brad Rogers, Jamie Cook and Ross Jurisich. All in all there was a lot to talk about including the origins of craft beer and whether Stone & Wood represented a lost opportunity for CUB, the opportunities and challenges facing Stone & Wood, and the challenges they face as the next generation of managers, the changing beer market and staying disciplined in in a time of change. Welcome to a special Beer is a Conversation, our last for 2019. A live chat with Stone & Wood co-founder Brad Rogers recorded at Brisbane’s My Beer Dealer. It’s fair to say that Brad is a legend. If it wasn’t just for creating Pacific Ale, arguably the most influential new beer of the last twenty years, Brad would still be revered as a brewer. This is a wonderful, long chat with Brad about so much that is going on in the beer word at the moment, but also about the beers that he is creating at his Stone & Wood side project Forest for the Trees. As with the previous Live from My Beer Dealer, this was a rare podcast recorded with beer in hand. Regular listeners will know that we avoid the sip and discuss style podcast, and so parts of the chat about the specific beers have been edited out for the podcast listeners benefit. Thanks to Antoinette, Matt and Les at My Beer Dealer for hosting us - and congratulations on your first year. Beer is a Conversation is our weekly sit down with some of the people who make the beer industry the interesting and dynamic industry it is and through these conversations we dig a little deeper into the stories behind the business of beer and brewing. And this week’s conversation is a deeper dive on steroids as we chat with Stone & Wood’s Jamie Cook. Jamie is no stranger to Radio Brews News, if just as the namesake for the Cook limit. But more importantly he has been a frequent guest through his roles as a founder of Stone & Wood, and of the Craft Beer Industry Association and now Chair of the Independent Brewers Association board. For all of those conversations, we haven’t talked much about Jamie himself. Last week Jamie turned sixty and this week he has issued a statement saying that many years ago he made a promise to himself that he would use that milestone to reset his priorities to give more time to himself, his family and adventure whilst winding back from a day to day working life. As such he has announced that he will be stepping back from his role as CEO of Fermentum - the overarching business behind Stone & Wood - retiring to the role of Chair of the Fermentum Board in December this year. Jamie has had a long history in the brewing industry, and his career has spanned some of the most interesting periods of Australian brewing...before he even co-founded Stone & Wood. If you are fascinated by brewing history and the evolution of the current craft beer revival, or if you are a student of the business of brewing, this is a fascinating conversation with one of the giants of the Australian industry. Under the  microscope this week is: The US Brewers Association is again revisiting the definition of ‘craft’, with a view to changing the definition of independence. Some people say that “Craft beer” means anything Boston Beer wants it to. But non-beer products are becoming an increasing part of brewer’s portfolios. Welcome to a special podcast from the Australian Brews News team. Thanks to Bintani,  we ran a live broadcast of the last two hours of the GABS Hottest 100 craft beers of 2017. We broadcast live from Balter, who ended up being named #1 in the poll. We chose Balter early in the voting process, well before the results were known, which turned out well for the show. While we managed to keep the show pretty on track despite a number of planned and unplanned guests dropping by the studio, good order was lost a little towards the end once the winner had been announced. We were very surprised to have Mick Fanning and then Joel Parkinson drop by to join us, Joel having raced in having left a wedding to celebrate with the team at Balter. Despite a few occasional rough edges, the podcast does capture the excitement of the countdown, the surprise as the results were announced and also how important the GABS Hottest 100 has come to be to the Australian beer industry.  Don’t let any brewer try and tell you that they don’t care about the results. We would like to thank Balter for their generosity in making the boardroom available, and for the time they gave us especially as it became clear that we were in for an exciting finish.  We’d also like to thank our co-hosts Kerry Claydon and Steve ‘Hendo’ Henderson for joining us for the broadcast. Thanks also to our guests: Balter’s Scott Hargrave, who - as you will hear - was so generous with his time we had to shoo out the door so he could actually celebrate the result rather than be stuck in the studio Stone & Wood’s Jamie Cook who happened to be on the coast and made the effort to join us in the studio and happened to be there as the final results were announced. Pirate Life’s Michael Cameron who joined us from a very hot carpark in South Australia Feral’s Brendan Varis who called in from WA Dave Padden who accepted our call while he was pulled over on a highway. And also to Steve Jeffares, one of the founder of the Hottest 100 and the GABS Festival and Phil Meddings from Bintani, both of whom had their interviews put on hold as we were happily gatecrashed by a couple of excited world champion surfers. Finally, thank you to Bintani - who will bring the right ingredients to your brewery, just as they do with Balter - for sponsoring the show. We genuinely could not have done it without them.

In a very wide-ranging conversation, we hear about Stone & Wood's year of growth, how they are managing the brewery's growth both from a production and organisational culture perspective, their successes during 2016, decision to appeal the court loss against Thunder Road. We also have a fascinating chat about the state of the market including some keen insights into where the beer market is, where it is heading and the opportunities this provides to small brewers. Among the insights offered are Jamie's views that while conscious consumers provide great opportunities for small independent brewers, there are four four challenges in the market, being clutter, price compression, quality and big dollar and we discuss these at length, including the critical question of value equation in a tight market. A fascinating discussion.

This week we catch up with beer writer, brewer and now beer Forefather, Willie Simpson. Beer Forefather Willie Simpson[/caption] If you read about beer in the era before blogs, Willie was most likely the person whose words you read. Willie has been writing about beer since the late 80s and more recently been brewing it at his brewery, Seven Sheds, in Railton Tasmania. Willie joins us to talk about his recent collaboration with Stone & Wood for their Forefather series of beers, joining Phil Sexton in those ranks. Willie also gives us his thoughts on the current beer scene andall that went before. Willie's collaboration beer, inspired by Geoff Scharer's Burragorang Bock, is described as having a rich malt flavour that hints of chocolate and dark fruits, lagered for six weeks to make sure the finish is super smooth. In the pre-ramble, we discuss the Australian Craft Brewers Conference and the Craft Beer Awards, as well as Thunder Road's win in the Federal Court. In the post-ramble, Matt takes a potshot at Dan Murphys' / CUBs' hamfisted beer and food match ads that are less about actually trying to find a beer that matches a dish to elevate the enjoyment of both than shilling beers that go with everything only because they don't have enough flavour to clash with anything. In doing so, they manage to undermine efforts to actually educate about beer and food matching. This week we chat with Jamie Cook who, while these days better known as a founder of Stone & Wood Brewery, has many years of experience working for Australia's two largest brewing companies as well as as a marketing consultant. Jamie is one of our favourite industry watchers and while the conversation inevitably comes back to Stone & Wood's approach to business, the conversation looks at issues of craft, provenance, beer bubbles and the future of beer. (We had teed up this interview some weeks ago for this to run today, and it is a coincidence the brewery features in our feed several times today.) The interview kicks off looking at the new English United Craft Brewers group's proposed definition of 'craft beer', which currently reads: A craft brewer is: Authentic: Brews all beer at original gravity. Owns and operates a craft brewer based (HQ) in UK Honest: The place where the beer is brewed is clearly listed on the label of the beer. All ingredients are clearly listed on the label of the beer. All the beer is brewed at a craft brewery. Independent: Less than 25 per cent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (for equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.
