Today's guest is a hands-on CFO who's involved in leading more than just the finance function. He's going Behind the Numbers to share why he believes that organizations will benefit from having a CFO that thinks like a CEO. Dave Bookbinder goes Behind The Numbers with Scott Stone - Chief Financial Officer at Alliance for Multispecialty Research. Scott is not your “typical” CFO (not that there's anything wrong with that). He has always been fascinated by how things work, and that has led him to continuously seek a deeper understanding of how businesses really function. While he is passionate about being a Finance leader, he is drawn to learning how enterprises grow and thrive, and how to build and develop the teams that create meaningful opportunities for people - and ultimately drive value creation. Scott also leads a class in the UAB School of Entrepreneurship called "Entrepreneurial Finance and Accounting", in which the entrepreneurs of tomorrow learn how to develop and use Accounting and Finance skills in their future endeavors. In this episode we're discussing how a CFO can create value in an organization; how to manage the ever-expanding role of the CFO and why they should be asking for more; and building culture as a finance leader. About the Host: Dave Bookbinder is the person that clients reach out to when they need to know what their most important assets are worth. He's a corporate finance executive with a focus on business and intellectual property valuation. Known as a collaborative adviser, Dave has served thousands of client companies of all sizes and industries. Dave is the author of two #1 best-selling books about the impact of human capital (PEOPLE!) on the valuation of a business enterprise called The NEW ROI: Return On Individuals & The NEW ROI: Going Behind The Numbers. He's on a mission to change the conversation about how the accounting world recognizes the value of people's contributions to a business enterprise, and to quantify what every CEO on the planet claims: “Our people are this company's most valuable asset.”

The intrepid team at the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR) in the Western Cape in South Africa joins Marlies Quirino and Scott Stone of Lookfar Conservation for an in-person discussion about community-level conservation work done at a landscape scale. The 3.2 million hectares of the GCBR, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2015, is a living laboratory for complex conservation and restoration initiatives in a region where three global biodiversity converge: the Fynbos, the Succulent Karoo, and the Maputoland-Tongoland-Albany. It's no substitute for an authentic South African braai, but a fascinating and inspiring discussion nonetheless!
Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep When your last name is Shula, football will flow through your veins, and that was certainly the case for Dave Shula. The eldest son of Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and Miami Dolphins icon, Don Shula, Dave would play wide receiver at Dartmouth College, before one year returning kicks with the Baltimore Colts and eight seasons on his father's Miami Dolphins' coaching staff. Dave would ultimately follow in his father's footsteps, becoming an NFL head coach himself, leading the Cincinnati Bengals from 1992-1996. In The Tank, Dave recalls what it was like to grow up as a Shula (2:28) and to be the envy of his peers as a ball boy for 1972 Undefeated Miami Dolphins (4:54), but also explains why his father blamed him for Garo Yepremian's ill-fated pass attempt in Super Bowl VII (8:23). He discusses the challenges and benefits of embracing being the son of a legend (9:57), shares the events that led him to join the Dolphins coaching staff in 1982 and ultimately becoming the position coach for Mark Clayton and Mark Duper (12:24). Dave goes on to provide emotional perspective on his Shula Bowl match-ups against his father (20:50), beams with tremendous pride in seeing his son, Chris, become a Super Bowl champion with the LA Rams (27:26), and navigates the Fish Tank Two-Minute Drill with excellence (31:20). Scott Stone grew up in Colorado Springs with his mother, father, and two siblings. Scott met his wife Aleyana in 2011. They were married in 2014 and now have two beautiful children together. Tragically on February 5th, 2018, while working in the Shefiff's office, with the Southern Colorado Auto Theft Task Force, Scott and three other officers were shot during the arrest of a suspect. One of Scott's partners, Micah Flick, died protecting Scott and his teammates. Scott received a near fatal wound during this incident. During this incident, Scott prayed to the Lord and told him, “God if you allow me to stay here with my family, I will do what you want me to do. I am yours Lord.” Scott survived by the Grace of God. He had a long road to recovery and still struggles physically with injuries received from this incident. In the Fall of 2018, Scott began to feel God directing him to serve in the body at Spring's Lighthouse. Scott began to serve in the security ministry. From there, he helped in any way that he was able to. Scott continuously prayed and thanked God for the opportunities that He had given him. Scott opened his heart to the will of the Lord and allowed the Lord to direct him. After much prayer and discussion with Aleyana, Brian, and Jeanine, along with encouragement from members of the church, Scott felt a call to ministry in leadership within the church. Scott now studies as the Assistant Pastor for Springs Lighthouse. Scott works behind the scenes helping to ensure that the church is running smoothly and jumps in anytime the need arises.
