On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk about the creator of The Twilight Zone, Rod Serling. Serling was a visionary who changed the very medium of television. He survived some of the worst warfare in the Pacific theater in WWII, and when he returned home, he was a changed man. He wrote of justice and dreamed of worlds without war, racism, and the worst that humanity had to offer. But it was the 1960s, so the only way to do it was to hide it all in the guise of science fiction and horror. This brilliant, singular mind brought some of the greatest moments of scripted television to life and narrated it all like a cigarette smoking Man in Black baller while he did so. via GIPHY You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension—a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone.Witness three podcasters, all awestruck by the same television show from over 50 years ago. A show that has become legendary, and has inspired generations of creative minds. Yes, in this episode of Planet 8, we will be talking about - Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone.Larry, Bob, and Karen each came up with a short list of episodes that really spoke to them, so they sat down and discussed what made them so special. Twilight Zone had some wonderful stories, and the twist endings have become well-known. But they were also capable of subtlety and beauty. And the actors! Watching the show is a real treat, as so many now-famous performers appear in the early days of their careers. Robert Redford, Carol Burnett, Telly Savalas, and of course, William Shatner, all appeared on the show before they became household names. Why do we still love Twilight Zone? What is the secret of its longevity? The stories have a timeless appeal -we relate to them because they speak to the most basic qualities of the human condition, things that do not seem to change -for better or worse.Wrapping up the episode is our Sensor Sweep, Larry shares a plethora of Twilight Zone items. Foremost is the Twilight Zone Companion, by Marc Scott Zicree. It's loaded with tons of behind the scenes information on the episodes. Another great treasure is the 4 CD set of the 40th Anniversary edition of the Twilight Zone soundtrack. From the 60s,we have From the Twilight Zone, a book by Rod Serling collecting adaptations of Twilight Zone episodes. Finally, Larry shares Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, a collection of Richard Matheson short stories, some of which were made into TZ episodes, including the title one which became the famous William Shatner episode with the gremlin on the airplane. All right friends, give the episode a listen and tell us what you think. We covered 12, count 'em, 12 Twilight Zone episodes, but there were so many more we would have enjoyed talking about! Maybe we will do a follow up show. Let us know what you thought of the episodes we discussed, and tell us about your favorite episodes. You can leave comments here, or at our other receiving stations:Twitter: https://twitter.com/Planet8CastFacebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8PodcastThanks for listening!
It wouldn’t be a real spooky slumber party without some good ghost stories! On this episode, the Slumberettes play “Two Truths and a Lie”, ghost story style. The 1990s were a fun time in comics. A lot of the indie comics from the 80s had either run their course or were brought into one of the major publishers. But the indies still existed, and Scud the Disposable Assassin was one of those that came out.Listen in as Brandon Cruz from Interdimensional RSS comes to talk about how a comic that not a lot of us have probably heard of have lead to (what he and tons of other people have told me) what is one of the best animated things in existence.Learn such things as: How did this not catch on? Why didn’t Chris get Rob Schrab to come on the show? Hint, Chris didn’t ask because he’s a big baby. What life lessons can you learn from a robot that refuses to kill a being when that is the entire purpose of robot’s existence, and how can you use that lesson to help make yourself a better person overall? You know what’s crazy? That we somehow got to the PS1 without a home console Fantastic Four game. You’ve got one of the most iconic groups in the Marvel Universe, a group that pretty much defines what it means to be Marvel, and it takes this long to get a game made? It’s pretty bad if you ask me.Come listen in as Alistair Wallis from Get Soft with Dr. Snuggles comes by the show to talk Fantastic Four and this game that clearly suffers from a thing known as “being an early 3D game.” But does that make it bad?Learn such things as: How many people does Marvel think 4 is? What story line, if any, are we introduced to here? Aren’t Fantastic Four podcasts contractually obligated to have an Air Wolf reference? Or is that just Fantasticast? And much more! Premiering in Canada on October 31st 1990, "Are You Afraid of the Dark" was a horror anthology series for children created by DJ MacHale. It aired on Nickelodeon until 1996 (before a soft reboot in 1999) and followed a group of kids that gathered once a week to tell stories. They referred to themselves as "The Midnight Society." With stories that ranged from terrifying to downright silly, this show was a fan favorite on the SNICK line-up. This week we discuss this 90s classic and our hopes for the upcoming film set to release this October. Visit us at: Blackcasediaries.wordpress.com for more info! As always, thanks for listening!

Surprise, here's a new episode of The Twilight Highlight Zone with Jeff Cork and Ben Hanson! Years ago, we hosted this podcast where we debated and dissected each and every episode of the classic TV show The Twilight Zone and now we've come back from the dead to give you a most unusual new episode. We were contacted by Brandon Cruz, who hosts another Twilight Zone podcast called Submitted For Your Approval, and he asked us if we'd want to record a cross-over episode where we take a closer look at the episode A Most Unusual Camera. Since Jeff Cork and I had zero strong feelings about the episode, we couldn't resist another look. We hope you enjoy this fun episode, and be sure to check out Brandon's podcast or just send him some thanks over Twitter. Also, check out our ongoing other podcast where we break down every album from the band AFI for some reason! Listen to the podcast below (or subscribe to us on iTunes) to hear us reflect on the comedic tale of A Most Unusual Camera.
