EPISODE 86 - “ANNA MAY WONG: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 5/5/2025 Anna May Wong was once the most famous Chinese woman in the world. The trailblazing actress, philanthropist, and fashion icon appeared in over 60 films and was a celebrated star, yet, at the time, she was not allowed to kiss a Caucasian man on screen, which limited the roles she could take, and she was not allowed to buy a house in Beverly Hills. A strange dichotomy, indeed. In recent years, she has enjoyed a much-deserved resurgence. Known as a Trailblazer and a cultural icon, she paved the way for generations of Asian and Asian American actors by proving that talent and perseverance could transcend racist casting conventions. Her life and career continue to influence conversations about diversity, representation, and the politics of race in Hollywood. This week, she is our Star of the Month. For Ref's Sake! - The podcast for football referees everywhere!
In this week's episode, I talk to Shaun Barry about his career in football. Shaun was a grassroots player who, by his own admission, was a bit of a hatchet man kicking anything that moved. In his own words, he spent more time suspended than he did playing. How did he make the transition from player to referee? Find out in this week's episode.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 31st of January, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in 1 Peter 4:16: "Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter. Peter says, just a little bit earlier on, if you are going to suffer, then suffer for something worthwhile. Don't suffer for being a thief or, a murderer or an evil-doer. Rather suffer for being a Christian because your reward at the end will be wonderful. If you are suffering because you are a thief, you are an evil-doer, at the end you will suffer even more when you go to hell for eternity. You know the old saying, it says," It takes a thief to catch a thief"? I am laughing because it is so true, isn't it? Look at the people that God has used to change the world: Moses - Moses was a murderer. Remember, he killed the Egyptian slave driver, and then he had to flee for his life. He is a giant in the faith. What about Paul, maybe the greatest of all the apostles? He was part and parcel of killing the first martyr in the New Testament, Stephen. That's right, he was the instigator. He was holding all their coats while they were stoning the man of God to death. What about Peter, himself, who wrote this very letter? He was a blasphemer. He kept changing feet; he was like a bull in a china shop. He just kept messing up. But the amazing thing is when these men and women, like Mary Magdalene - seven demons were cast out of her. She was an immoral woman, yet she became probably the most faithful of all to the Lord Jesus Christ; she never left Him, not right to the very end. I have seen it in my own life. I have seen people who I thought I would never, ever give a chance to, and then they get gloriously saved. They meet the Lord and become great ambassadors for Him. Charles Carlson, they call him "The Hatchet Man"; he was President Nixon's righthand man. They said he would walk over his own mother's grave to get something, but he got exposed; he got sent to jail in place of the president because the president never got sent to jail. In jail, he met Jesus, and after that, he started the Prison Fellowship, which went right around the world. So today, if I am talking to a man who is suffering, rather suffer for Jesus than for your wicked ways.God bless you and goodbye.
Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor's Code and Corrupted the Justice Department by Elie Honig “Elie Honig has written much more than a compelling takedown of an unfit attorney general; he also offers a blueprint for how impartial and apolitical justice should be administered in America.”—Preet Bharara “An essential analysis for anyone committed to understanding the abuses of the Trump administration so we can ensure they never happen again.”—Joyce White Vance “Essential reading for all who cherish the rule of law in America.”—George Conway "Written with all the color and pacing of a legal thriller."—Variety CNN Senior Legal Analyst Elie Honig exposes William Barr as the most corrupt attorney general in modern U.S. history, with stunning new scandals bubbling to the surface even after Barr's departure from office. In Hatchet Man, former federal prosecutor Elie Honig uncovers Barr's unprecedented abuse of power as Attorney General and the lasting structural damage done to the Justice Department. Honig uses his own experience as a prosecutor at DOJ to show how, as America's top law enforcement official, Barr repeatedly violated the Department's written rules, and those vital, unwritten norms and principles that comprise the “prosecutor's code.” Barr was corrupt from the beginning. His first act as AG was to distort the findings of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, earning a public rebuke for his dishonesty from Mueller himself and, later, from a federal judge. Then, Barr tried to manipulate the law to squash a whistleblower's complaint about Trump's dealings with Ukraine—the report that eventually led to Trump's first impeachment. Barr later intervened in an unprecedented manner to undermine his own DOJ prosecutors on the cases of Michael Flynn and Roger Stone, both political allies of the President. And then Barr fired the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York under false pretenses. Finally, Barr amplified baseless theories about massive mail-in ballot fraud, pouring gasoline on the dumpster fire battle over the 2020 election results and contributing to the January 6 insurrection that led to Trump's second impeachment. In Hatchet Man, Honig proves that Barr trampled the two core virtues that have long defined the department and its mission: credibility and independence – ultimately in service of his own deeply-rooted, extremist legal and personal beliefs. Honig shows how Barr corrupted the Justice Department and explains what we must do to prevent this from ever happening again. About the author Elie Honig is a CNN Senior Legal Analyst who previously worked for 14 years as a federal and state prosecutor. He provides on-air commentary and analysis for CNN on news relating to the U.S. Department of Justice, major criminal trials, the Supreme Court, Congressional and grand jury investigations, national security, policing, and other legal issues. In 2022, Honig was nominated for an Emmy Award by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the category “Outstanding News Analysis: Editorial & Opinion.” Honig is the author of the national bestselling book, “Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor's Code and Corrupted the Justice Department,” published by HarperCollins. His second book, “Untouchable: How Powerful People Get Away With It,” is scheduled for publication in January 2023. Honig is the host of a popular true-crime podcast, “Up Against the Mob,” and a weekly legal podcast, “Third Degree,” both productions of Cafe and Vox Media. Season Two of “Up Against the Mob” premieres in November 2022. Honig graduated from Rutgers College (where he now teaches) in 1997, and Harvard Law School in 2000.

Since the early 1950's, tales of a Hatchet Man have made their rounds across the country. The best-known version of the legend didn't become popular until the late 1960's and early 1970's. This version takes place on a college campus, where two unsuspecting girls encounter the hatchet man while alone in their dorm on a holiday break. Sit back, relax, turn the lights down low, and get comfortable as we bring you the tale of the Hatchet Man of Bloomington.

He is the bestselling author of Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor’s Code and Corrupted the Justice Department, and his latest book is Untouchable: How Powerful People Get Away with It. What We Discuss with Elie Honig: How the rich and powerful exploit flaws in the justice system to evade accountability while being able to afford lengthy trials and secure better plea deals. Why using wiretaps and flipping complicit parties are essential tactics for gathering evidence against the people at the top. How intermediaries are used to shield the rich and powerful from being held responsible for crimes committed in their name. Why donations to political candidates can lead to special treatment during prosecution, indicating potential corruption. Why we shouldn't completely abandon faith in the justice system despite its numerous imperfections. And much more... This week, Jen's guest is her good friend Elie Honig. Elie is a former prosecutor and currently a Senior Legal Analyst at CNN. At the Southern District of New York Elie prosecuted federal cases involving organized crime, human trafficking, public corruption, and violent crime. Among his successes were prosecutions of 100 members and associates of La Cosa Nostra, including Bosses and other high-ranking members of the Gambino and Genovese Organized Crime Families. But this program is called Booked Up, not Locked Up, so Elie is here to talk about his equally stellar writing career. He is the author of the national bestseller Hatchet Man about former Attorney General Bill Barr, and has a new must-read page-turner out now called Untouchable: How Powerful People Get Away With It. It was Elie in Untouchable who broke the story about how the federal prosecutors decided not to charge Donald Trump in the Stormy Daniels hush money case. Yes, the very case that local prosecutor, District Attorney Alvin Bragg chose to pursue. But, there are some differences and Elie and Jen get into all of that. Plus he pulls no punches when it comes to critiquing Attorney General Merrick Garland. Okay. Let's dive in. Michael Cohen has admitted to his role as a Hatchet Man and Fixer for Donald Trump in Trump's Pre Presidential Days. He has paid the price of Prison and Home Confinement for a period of Three Years as a result of paying off Porn Star, Stormy Daniels for the benefit of Donald Trump. Recently this case seems to be heating up once again with Donald Trump this time ending up in the crosshairs of the New York City District Attorney. Part 2: "The Hatchet Man"In last week's episode “Leave Us Alone” we discussed the Cline Falls Axe Attack from 1977. College students Terri Jentz and Avra Goldman were in Oregon starting their summer cycling trip across the TransAmerica trail. A few days into their trip they were attacked while camping in Cline Falls State Park. The attacker drove his vehicle to the women's tent, got out, and hacked at the girls with a hatchet. Miraculously, both women survived. After three years, the case was essentially closed and no one was arrested. Unfortunately, due to the statute of limitations, the Cline Falls Axe attacker would never pay for his crimes. An interview with Elie Honig, author of Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor's Code and Corrupted the Justice Department. In the book, Honig makes the case that Barr trampled the two core virtues that have long defined the department and its mission: credibility and independence.
And a very good morning to you! It is Wednesday morning, 23rd March, the year 2022. And this is your friend, Angus Buchan with a thought for the day.“After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.”John 13:5The ultimate servant, oh yes, the Son of God - Can you believe it, washing dirty, stinky feet! And a pair of those feet were about to leave and betray Him for thirty pieces of silver and yet he still washed them. Jesus says to us today, if we want to be the greatest, we have to be prepared to become the least. I looked up the dictionary, the word servant: “a person employed to perform duties for others.”You know, I want to tell you about a man who you have probably heard of, Charles Colson. Charles Colson was the right-hand man of President Nixon when he was the President of the United States of America. He was a ruthless man, Charles Colson. He was known as The Hatchet Man. What a terrible name! They said he was ruthless, he would even walk over his own mother's grave to get to the top. Then the terrible Watergate Scandal broke out and Richard Nixon told lies and was impeached and taken out of office. But you see, a President had never been put in jail before and so the right-hand man, Charles Colson, went to jail on behalf of the President. But that is where his life really began. That is where he met the Greatest Servant of all, Jesus Christ. This is what Charles Colson said: “It is not what we do that matters but what a sovereign God chooses to do through us.”God doesn't want our success. He wants us. He doesn't demand our achievements, He demands our obedience. And after he came out of jail, having met Jesus Christ, Charles Colson started a huge prison fellowship ministry and eventually went to be with the Lord, as a servant of God.Today, go out and be a servant of the Lord.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

It is Saturday morning, 13th November 2021 and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for the day.“I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”Luke 15:7Joy over one sinner who truly repents! You know, Jesus is known by many names in the Bible. He is known as The King of Kings, The Lord of Lords, The Lion of Judah, He is The Lily of the Valley and He is the bright Morning Star... But the title that I love the most is the Friend of Sinners. That is right! If we go to Matthew 9:12, we will see Jesus says:“I came, not for the righteous, but I came for sinners to repent.”He came for sick like you and me, and not for the healthy. Luke 5:27, He said to the tax collector, “Follow me”, and he left his table with all the money and followed Jesus immediately. Luke 8:2: Mary Magdalene, out of whom Jesus delivered seven demons, and yet I tell you what, I think you will find she is the most beautiful woman in Heaven. Why? Because the Lord takes sinners and he turns them into saints. And these are the type of people that Jesus used to change the world.I remember reading about a man by the name of Charles Colson. He was known as the Hatchet Man. He was President Nixon's Chief Advisor in the USA. He was the most brilliant mind of his time but he was a ruthless man. They said, he would even walk over his own mother's grave just to gain a bit of place. But you know, Richard Nixon was caught in the Watergate scandal and he was indicted, he was impeached. They removed him from office and he should have gone to jail. But you see, they had never put a US President in jail before, so the right-hand man, Nixon's Chief Advisor, Charles Colson (Chuck Colson) went to jail in his place. In jail there was someone looking for him, that's right - He was the one who was looking for that one lost sheep, His name is Jesus. Charles Colson met Jesus in jail. When he had served his sentence, his full sentence, he came out and he started the Prison Fellowship Ministry where thousands of prisoners all over the world, have come to know Jesus Christ. The Lord takes nobodies and makes them into 'somebodies'.Today, call upon Him. You say, “Angus, I can't, I have gone too far.” No, you haven't. The thief on the cross called out to Jesus and the Lord said, “Today, you will be with Me in Paradise.” He is waiting to hear from you this morning - Talk to Him. God bless you and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.
