Murray passed away in 2017, and his son Mason has written the first biography about him - Murray Ball - A Cartoonist's Life. Andy Bush began his DJ journey somewhat accidentally, without any prior interest in radio. After university, he moved to Bristol to play in a band and took on a day job at BT to pay the bills. One day, during his lunch break, he stumbled upon a careers fair in Clifton where they were advertising for Traffic News readers. Despite not being a driver, he saw it as a unique opportunity and recorded a demo on a cassette tape. Surprisingly, he got the job and this marked his start in radio, around the year 2000. Working for a company called Traffic Link in Bristol's Evening Post building, Andy had the chance to dial into various shows throughout the day. This experience provided him with valuable knowledge and skills in radio, particularly in understanding the direction of a piece and supporting the presenter, as opposed to going off track. He also learned the importance of concise delivery and being mindful of time constraints. Thus, Andy's radio career began unexpectedly, but it set him on an adventurous path in the world of broadcasting. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Roman Travers: Changing Dominion Post's name makes no sense

If you live long enough, I guess you'll get to see everything either change or completely die out. On Friday the news that Wellington's grand old lady of the fourth estate is to have a makeover was a bit confronting and sad for me and those who've grown old with the name of The Dominion Post.   The Dominion Post is dropping the word ‘dominion' from its name - and its parent company is signalling further change is yet to come.   Sounding dangerously like something from Italian mafia, ‘The Dom, started 21 years ago as a merger of The Dominion and The Evening Post.   In an act reflective of a complete lack of any creativity, the new name will be… are you ready? The Post.   I wonder how many creative types with cool cardigans, fridges filled with tofu, eclectic Spotify playlists and electric scooters at reception in some Willis Street creative agency got together to come up with that catchy name?   The editor of The Post is Caitlin Cherry and she says that New Zealand's status as a dominion ended in 1945 when it joined the United Nations, so it is time for the word to go.   She says they thought carefully about what they wanted The Post to represent now and into the future. For the next fortnight they'll be having morning teas and ‘farewell to the past' dinners before launching The Post.   The Dominion Post's former editor Tim Pankhurst says he's sceptical about the name change saying that when The Dominion and The Evening Post merged the papers, they did market research, and we found those masthead titles were so entrenched in Wellington, they had better brand-name recognition than Coca Cola.   Isn't that incredible? Mind you, when I hear the name Coca Cola, I instantly think diabetes militias, obesity and huge dental bills.   There's a great deal to be said about the name of anything and how well entrenched that branding is. Like Three Waters for example, now to be called Affordable Waters.   I guess the premise is that if you say it out loud repetitively for long enough, you'll begin to believe it. Just like positive affirmations and the power of placebo in a medical trial.   Changing the name of a capital institution like The Dominion Post is a move being made for reasons that don't really seem to make sense. But as their editor says, there's more change to come. So brace yourself Wellington. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rain, hail, or shine, they always received their papers and being in the land of the long white cloud, it often meant arriving home from deliveries soaked-through. As a medium and a practical psychic, I offer frank, usable, and actionable insight from the sixth sense and the afterlife on topics of real interest to you. I've been to those psychics who want to talk about ethereal things and mystical beings, or offer vague generalizations about "holding the space," or "raising my vibration." As a client, I was always looking for undeniable evidence of my deceased loved ones and concrete information that I could use in my life right now. Practical information that made sense, empowered me, and made it easier to find a relationship, job, or better health. I always wanted the kind of reading that left me feeling more in control of my life, with more confidence in my ability to make good choices. My expectations as a client have defined my career as a psychic medium. I've worked hard to develop the ability to translate those ethereal, sixth-sense visions into real evidence and practical insight. Because if you aren't getting insight, what are you paying a psychic for? I developed my ability. Yes, you read that right. I didn't have a near-death experience or have my third eye opened by a guru. I wasn't "born with a veil." I have always believed that everyone has a sixth sense, and accessing it requires only dedication to developing a skill, and a dash (or two) of confidence. Don't believe that psychic mediums are more "gifted" than you are. Psychic mediumship is a skill, not a gift, and to that end I teach workshops on developing psychic ability and offer training for mediums in my message circles. If you're interested in a reading for yourself, check out this short video about how I work and what your role is as the client:

In the 19th Century, the Elysian Fields in New Jersey, lay just a short boat trip away for New Yorkers looking to spread their legs, take in some rural, countryside air or relax on the lawn of a riverside refreshment house with a glass of lemonade. Mostly famous for being the birthplace of modern baseball, the fields have another, somewhat less well-known story connected to their dense thickets and green walkways. Far from the straightforward drubbing of that first game of baseball, this story is, of course far darker, full of more twists and turns and has no winners. Hailed as one of the greatest criminal mysteries of 19th Century New York, the case of Mary Rogers is at once perfectly well solved and at the same time, completely wide open.   SOURCES   Stashower, Daniel (2006) The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allen Poe & The Invention of Murder. It’s the Spring of 1835. We’re at the offices of The New York Sun, published by Benjamin Day and edited by George Wisner. When the Sun launched in 1833, it became New York’s first successful one-cent newspaper. Prior to the Sun’s launch, the most widely-read city papers were the Courier and Enquirer, Evening Post, Evening Star, and Commercial Advertiser. The City’s eleven merchant papers had a combined circulation of only 26,500. All were produced within a few blocks of each other near Wall Street, William and Nassau. The papers covered foreign affairs, Washington dealings, and little of local culture. But, by 1833 as New York City’s population soared passed two-hundred thousand, you’d have heard English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and any number of other foreign languages on the streets of New York. These six-cent merchant papers were missing an opportunity, and Benjamin Day stepped in. The New York Sun was dramatically different. It was smaller in size, and just below the nameplate was the price: ONE PENNY. Many of the reports on tariffs and trade politics were replaced by stories littered with sex, romance, intrigue, violence, and death. The Sun’s daily circulation soon reached over ten thousand. Then an old rival, James Gordon Bennett, launched a new penny paper—The New York Morning Herald—and his readership was catching up.Benjamin Day needed help. He wanted an editor capable of captivating the entire city, and changing the literary landscape in New York forever. He states that in the 19th century European historians and some Maori historians talked about things in their past that is now, virtually ‘politically incorrect’ today. That in fact there apparently were different peoples living here prior to the Maori or the Polynesians that came to this country. Not taught in the NZ Education System That today this is not taught in our schools or our universities and John says that if true, that there were other people here, then they are a real and genuine part of our history. His book Forbidden History seeks to show that for Maori that their descendants are here among us - they are living today and the story of at least two of them are written about in his book. A descendent of another DNA strand? He introduces on person who maintains she is a descendant of the Patupaiarehe - fair skinned and fair haired - some with reddish hair  that they have been here for around 2000 years right up until today. He says that there is a small tribe, (hapu) living near Taumaranui in the middle of the North Island. Her name is Monica Matamua an 85 year old woman and participated in a National Geographic Genome project and took a DNA test on her blood. The main results showed 40% Mediterranean origin 12% European and only about 14%  Oceanic or Polynesian. Note That this only totals 66% of the DNA. That the other DNA is of Peruvian or South American origin. He furthers this by saying she is descended from people who had intermarried with Maori people - and he adds to this that certain Maori are in part descendents from these people themselves. He says certainly some of them are. John then states that sales of his book has been bought well be Maori people. Who many are delighted to know that they have a longer whakapapa - or lineage - bloodline. The test show that Middle Eastern especially Persian DNA is in her lineage. That as there was turmoil in Persia, the narrative says that they left there with the desire to find a place to live in peace  … finally after many countries (so the story is conveyed) they ended up in Aotearoa just before the time of Christ. Listen to the interview Waitaha - who are they? John then says that the Polynesian Waitaha nation arrived after that - according to recently deceased Paramount Chief George Connolly  AKA Hori Manuka Manuka Kapenga. The Upoko Ariki or Head Chief of the Waitaha people. Who’s lineage supposedly came from the Middle East as well, according to George, who said that his people landed in NZ around 580 AD. Then John says that there are actually other people but deferred to speak about it saying that it get confusing (I agree says Tim). He said upon their arrival they had the desire to live in peace and with the Patupaiarehe and the Waitaha - they between them lived in peace for 1300 years and John says if this is true - then we owe it to ourselves if this is the history fo this country - to find out as to how did the achieve this peace. Because it is exceptionally unique. See the YouTube Video 'Skeletons in the Cupboard' by Peter Marsh  and Gabie Plumm … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2z6PlYiQSTs Poenamo is the actual name of the South Island actually means the Waters of Peace. This is where a good percentage of the Waitaha supposedly come from. Today the South Island is known as Te Wai Pounamu, the waters of greenstone. The Arrival of the Warrior People Then there was the arrival of warrior people … who took over the first inhabitants that were here and then engaged in inter-tribal warfare fighting among themselves. John talks about a Moriori chief in Waikato that once were inhabiting an area from Raglan in the West to Tauranga in the East  - his name being Philipp Ranga - Waikato University Professor Tom Roa when asked agreed and said that there were people in that area before the Maori arrived. In the original history of the Tainui tribe they have in their official record a story that having landed in the Waikato that they  drove out inhabitants and indigenous people that they found. Listen about the Chief of the Moriori of the Chatham islands and what transpired right up until the time to the invasion of Maori who took a British sailing ship filled with warriors and went and took the lives of the population. http://www.jps.auckland.ac.nz/document//Volume_1_1892/Volume_1%2C_No._3%2C_1892/The_occupation_of_the_Chatham_Islands_by_the_Maoris_in_1835%3A_Part_II_-_The_migration_of_Ngatiawa_to_Chatham_Island%2C_by_A._Shand%2C_p154-163/p1 John says that his book has gone into bat for them, because these previous people were never a party to the Treaty of  Waitangi. A treaty between the British Crown and certain Maori Tribes from around NZ. But not all. J H Mitchell - in his book Takitimu which is about the canoe or waka of the Ngāti Kahungunu when they first came to the Hawkes Bay and Wairoa area they were received by people who were already here … but it is said that Ngāti Kahungunu eventually turned on these people Other subjects covered: The stone structures that have been locked away and made out of bounds in Waipoua forest -  a city that may have supported some thousands … Listen … and do a web search. Hear about the late Noel Hilliam, the curator of the Dargaville Museum and what he found as shipwrecks along the West Coast and his profound statement about what may have been a large stone city in the Waipoua forest. That is now a ‘no go’ area by the Department of Conservation. That carbon dating takes it back to 2000 BC. https://breakingviewsnz.blogspot.com/2016/01/mike-butler-disinterest-in-pre-maori.html There are 105 embargoes in place across NZ preventing any forensic research on ancient archaeological sites that go back in time - no one is allowed in to these places - by Law. Learn about the ancient Auckland, Queen St stump and adze that were found during an infrastructure excavation that were so deep in the earth, that it had to have been there far longer than the arrival of present Maori. http://www.kilts.co.nz/stump.htm     There is much more to this very interesting interview and in speaking with John Aldworth afterwards it gave me a sense that he is only looking for the truth on this matter of when was Aotearoa first settled. http://www.ngatihotu.nz/2018/11/01/forbidden-history-by-john-dudley-aldworth/ http://forbiddenhistory.co.nz

This is a story about Vassy Antoniadis who arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, on the MV Goya in 1951. Vassy was born in Bucharest, Romania to Greek parents. She and her family were among a large group of ethnic Greeks returned to Greece after World War 2 after living in Romania for many years. Greece had been decimated by war and civil war and the prospects for employment were not good. The family reluctantly decided to accept resettlement. Their destination changed from Australia to New Zealand at the last minute. Along with 1000 others they disembarked in Wellington on 2 May 1951 and boarded a train for the Pahiatua Reception and Training Centre. A reporter captured the moment but Vassy did not see the picture until sixty-five years later. This is a short story about coming to NZ and seeing the picture again. The picture is held in the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand: "Immigrants on the Goya".
