Homer G Phillips Hospital, belongs to the Ville  neighborhood and to the African American community, its history and its culture in StLouis mo.  It was my privilege and perhaps even my duty ,to have this discussion with the leadership of the Homer G Phillips Nurses Alumni Association, concerning their lawsuit against developer Paul McKee, for copyright infringement. ——— I was joined in studio by Yvonne Jones, President of HGP Nurses Association and Zenobia Thompson, Vice Chairman and a long time healthcare activist l, in the StLouis metro area. ——— Our conversation focused on McKee's misappropriation, of the historic black hospital's name, from the African American community for his, for profit 3 bed healthcare facility located near downtown StLouis. ——— It was hard for me to be the objective host, for this discussion, given my history with Homer G Phillis Hospital. ——— I was born there, my son Christian Thompson ,was born there, my late mother, Mrs Emma Lou Thompson, a LPN worked there for some 40 years and was dedicated to Homer G Phillips and her many healthcare colleagues, while working the 11p to 7am shift for over 4 decades. ——— Homer G Phillips Hospital, was opened in 1937 on Whittier ave. in the Ville neighborhood, around the corner from the Sumner High School, Antioch Baptist Church and the iconic Annie Malone Children's Home.  —— The hospital gained national recognition for its excellent training of black physicians, nurses and surgeons, who were denied access to interning at hospitals, throughout the south during that time period. ——— Homer G Phillips Hospital, was ranked in the top ten public hospitals, across the nation, while training medical students, from across the globe. Homer G Phillips was closed in 1979, by former mayor Jim Conway an unforgivable act, that caused him to be a one term mayor, as Congressman Bill Clay Sr., had promised him he would be, if he indeed closed Homer G Phillips Hospital.------ The copyright lawsuit, brought by the Homer G Phillips Nurses Alumni Association, against Paul McKee, was filed in 2022 and is scheduled to be heard, in January 2024. —— Ours is a passionate conversation that you need to hear, it's our black history, our culture and legacy that's once again being threatened. ——— The Homer G Phillips Nurses Association, needs our support. Crazy basketball parents are ruining youth sports in 2022. The days are gone when parents sit quietly and come to games just out of mere enjoyment and support of their kids. The youth are not only listening to everything these parents say, but they watch every move that gets made.  Now days we see so many crazy parents in youth basketball. In this episode we sit and talk to Sumner High School Legend Coach Albert Thomas. Welcome back to All Ears! This time we are joined by Washington Spirit player Jordan Thompson! Jordan was a decorated Gonzaga Athlete and was selected with the 50th pick in the NWSL Draft in 2022. When she was two days into training camp, she tore her ACL. About Jordan Thompson - Originally from Sumner, Washington, Thompson earned Second Team All-West Coast Conference honors in 2021 and started all 81 games she played in during her five seasons at Gonzaga. Thompson also recorded six goals and two assists in her career with the Bulldogs, including three goals in six shots on goal throughout her senior campaign. Before college, she left Sumner High School as one of the greatest athletes in school history. Sumner finished second in the 4A SPSL and Thompson took home the league MVP. She earned The News Tribune's 2016 All-Area Girls Soccer Player of the Year and helped guide the Spartans to the state quarterfinals as a senior. As a freshman, she scored the game-winning goal in the Class 2A state championship game for Sumner. Proving her all-around athlete status, Thompson set six school records in one season of track. She was also a member of the Washington Premier club team. Maria is an active clinician, adjudicator and presenter throughout the United States and abroad. She holds a B.M. in Music Education emphasis on Voice (K-12 Certified) Degree from the University of Missouri- St. Louis. She has served as the Arts and Administrative Fellow for The St. Louis Symphony and has served as the Community Engagement Manager for The St. Louis Children's Choirs. St. Louis’ historic Sumner High School has dodged closure once more. Tuesday night, the St. Louis Public School board approved a new effort to reinvigorate Sumner's declining enrollment, rather than close the historic school.

Arts organizations, alumni, and Harris-Stowe State University are rallying to save historic Sumner High School. The St. Louis School board could vote this evening on whether to permanently close the oldest high school for African Americans west of the Mississippi.

Episode #11 we sit down with my former high school Principal Travis Brown. Mr Brown is a proud member of the Sumner High School's Hall of Fame, Missouri Baptist College University  Hall of Fame and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. Named one of the 50 greatest players at Sumner,  he was one of the star players on the 1969 Sumner basketball team that is named by many as the best St. Louis basketball team ever. After his playing years were over he was able to be recognized as one of Missouri's best educators. He is most proud of his role as helping inspire student athletes push themselves academically by creating the Student Athletes Luncheon Program. Over 3000 students in the St. Louis Public Schools with a 3.25 GPA have been honored by the program and we were very excited to discuss this because the academic part of sports is so valuable. This man has so many awards its hard to keep up with them. But keep up with all the great advice he gives in this episode. Who would give up a dream of playing professional baseball alongside Negro League greats Dizzie Dean, Hank Thompson, Elston Howard, Willard Brown, Larry Doby and so many others? Semi-pro outfielder Nate Crump of St. Louis, Missouri asked a friend what life on the road really meant for Black baseball players and chose a life in science instead. He was so talented that a career at McDonnell Douglass (formerly McDonnell Aircraft) led to even greater heights and recognition from NASA. Hosts Nicole Franklin and Bryant Monteilh share a delightful hour with chemist, athlete (he still played a round of golf at age 99) and military veteran Nate Crump, also joined by his talented and proud son Dr. Nathaniel Crump. 

We meet retired nurse Glyndorah Hubbard of St. Louis, MO who was born in 1916. At 15 years old, Ms. Hubbard graduated from famed Sumner High School in St. Louis. Upon graduating college, she began her life as a nurse while working at the only hospital where Black residents of the city could get medical care at the time, Homer G. Phillips. Maurice Dudley is a graduate of Palm Beach Gardens High School 1976. He joined the US Army in Feb 8, 1977 and served 20 years in the Army. Retired June 1997 as a First Sergeant. Maurice did a combat tour in Gulf War (Desert Storm) and was awarded the Army Bronze Star after the war. He started working at Sumner High School Aug 1997 – Presently serves a Campus Safety Officer and Track Coach. Maurice was awarded Coach Of The Year 2018. Maurice's primary role at Sumner High School is to provide a safe environment for education and positive social interaction between multicultural teenagers grades 9 – 12.

Happy World Kindness Day! John Norlin is a Co-Founder of CharacterStrong, a Servant Leadership trainer, and motivational speaker. He was Washington Advisor of the Year, taught 5 leadership classes per semester for 10 years at Sumner High School, and was a Program Administrator for the Whole Child for five years. Houston Kraft is a Co-Founder of CharacterStrong, a professional speaker, leadership consultant, and kindness advocate who speaks to middle schools, high schools, colleges, and businesses nationally. He has spoken at over 500 events and counting. Student Body President in High School, Class President at Bowdoin College, Leadership Camp Staff for 12 years in Washington - he is a lifelong learner of character, culture, kindness, and leadership.

Arthur Kennedy, Jr. had a need for speed. He was one of the first African Americans to become a professional powerboat racer. By the end of his career, Kennedy had set 14 records and was ranked one of the top ten drivers in the world."Arthur Kennedy was a graduate of Sumner High School here in St. Louis. His father had a sheet metal business that gradually moved into a heating and cooling business. But young Arthur Kennedy was from his earliest ages interested in boats. And boat racing," said Dr. Robert Archibald.There were very few places for Kennedy to hone his racing skills in St. Louis. But he managed, running his speedboats in flooded quarries and even the Mississippi river. Despite his fame, he also managed to keep the family business afloat."The company prospered under his leadership despite the fact he spent a lot of his time racing boats," explained Archibald.Arthur Kennedy, Jr. retired from powerboat racing in 1989. Sadly he died young from a heart atttack at age 48. A short life, but one lived at full throttle.

Bryan Slater is an experienced classroom teacher and has spent the last 15 years teaching high school Social Studies in Tacoma, WA, Lagos, Nigeria, and Sumner, WA. He currently teaches IB 20th Century Topics and Theory of Knowledge to 9-12th graders at Sumner High School. We talk with Bryan about the paradigm shift that he has had surrounding the strategy of, “ It's Your Character Not Mine.” He shares how it can change the way that we see fault, take responsibility, and respond better in different situations as we go through the day.

Tina Turner nació como Anna Mae Bullock el 26 de noviembre de 1939 en Nutbush, condado de Haywood, Tennessee. We’re all taught that housing desegregation was a good thing, right? But if you talk to the old-timers in The Ville, they’ll give you a more nuanced story: They’ll tell you it was a gift that came with a curse. In its heyday, The Ville was the beating heart of black Saint Louis, with historic African American institutions like Sumner High School and Homer G Phillips Hospital. Desegregation opened the floodgates for a mass-exodus from The Ville, and now the neighborhood is more than 60 percent vacant.  Out of the Blocks travels to the Ville for this special episode, produced in collaboration with the Saint Louis Public Radio podcast We Live Here and the neighborhood organization 4 The Ville. This episode was made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. �ڡݠޡ!�"7 v-�

With the passing of comedian, civil rights activist, and cultural icon Dick Gregory, d.j. pays homage to the life of the St. Louis native, by reading excerpts of Gregory's 1964 autobiography, "nigger." Gregory attended Cote Brilliante elementary school, graduated from Sumner High School, and attended SIU-Carbondale before becoming a comedian. he was active in the Civil Rights struggle, and ran as a write-in candidate for president in 1968.  

A successful anti-bullying event inspired by a mother and daughter team reached and transformed the lives of young people through art. Jade Harrell with Aviana Brown, Creative Director/Co-Operating Officer with mom, Kimberly Robinson, Founder, SGMagazine . The three day event, Celebrating My Unique Through Art, An Anti-Bullying Campaign, commemorated National Education week and included a free screening of BROOKLYN, a French hip hop drama that premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival; a school wide assembly at Sumner High School with St. Louis hip hop artist Bo Dean, and a street art block party where artists celebrated individuality, essential to lessening bullying among young peers. Art pieces are being donated to the City of St. Louis to board up an abandoned home in North St. Louis. The groundbreaking initiative---the only in St. Louis to launch such a massive anti-bullying campaign with a focus on the arts, targeting black youth--would appeal to local residents because of the public outcry for ways to curb violence in the black community and promote unity and understanding.
