Somewhere between the lunchbox, the tablet screen, and the drive‑thru window, childhood took a detour. We're witnessing a full‑blown pediatric health crisis—rising anxiety, attention issues, stalled growth, and inflammation hiding behind “normal” lab work. Dr. Adam Brockman dives into the hidden biology behind modern childhood, where the “Beige Diet” of ultra‑processed foods collides with young immune systems and developing brains. In this episode, you'll hear the story of Evan—a boy whose stalled growth exposed a storm brewing in his gut—and discover why healing our kids means more than symptom‑chasing. Joined by integrative pediatric expert Dr. Matthew Hand, Dr. Brockman unpacks the Whole‑Child approach, showing parents how to rebuild resilience, restore balance, and rewrite the future of children's health—one meal, one night of sleep, one mindful habit at a time.Special Guest: Dr. Matthew Hand, Pediatric Nephrology Director and Professor at DartmouthMedical School and Children's Hospital

Discovering Plants with Healing Powers with guest Ava Long, Clinical Herbalist and Owner, Floral Botanical Medicine Greek physician Hippocrates is attributed with saying “Nature is the best physician.” Herbalism is the study and practice of using plants for medicinal, therapeutic, and health-promoting purposes.Ancient Greek herbalism helped form the foundation of modern herbal medicine and the emphasis on the balance between nature, health and philosophy. Every plant seems to have its own special healing superpowers, and a relatable story to tell. Clinical herbalist Ava Long shares her story and her approach to herbal science. Ava Long is the owner of Floral Botanical Medicine, a health and wellness practice. Her diagnostic approach incorporates live blood microscopy to uncover root causes of chronic health concerns. She develops individualized herbal protocols for detoxification and for restoring balance and achieving optimal health. Ava has trained at various institutions, including the Boston School of Herbal Studies, where she also serves as an adjunct professor. She is also the founder of Maine Sea Greens, a seaweed food product combining her passion for herbalism and seaweed. Through her work, she helps others benefit from ancient holistic practices alongside modern technology. Note: Roughly 30 percent of the global population is at risk for iodine deficiency. Symptoms of iodine deficiency include unexplained weight gain, chronic fatigue, cold sensitivity, dry skin, thinning hair, and enlarged thyroid gland. Seaweed, the best natural source of iodine, is an excellent herbal and dietary addition for supporting thyroid health, regulating blood sugar, and providing antioxidant protection. Seaweed should, however, be consumed in moderation to avoid excess iodine. In helping our anxious children, it is important to understand the context in which they are growing up in and how that might contribute to their struggles. Stephanie Malia is an author, educator and social worker who has provided us with a guide to navigate the complexity of parenting in our current age. She  has just published her third book, How We Thrive: Caring for Kids and Ourselves in a Changing World. In this book, she explores the urgent need to protect human essentials, like sleep, play and connection-that modern life restricts or denies. She points out the modern era has been characterized by an accelerated rate of change in many domains that we are not equipped to metabolize. She identifies the dangerous "weather conditions" of modern life and after interviewing over a 100 experts for her book, how we can intentionally "Rehumanize" or get back to the essentials that help us thrive. She is talking about the foundation we need to strive for to help all children and especially our anxious ones.  Her previous books are Whole Child, Whole Life and Making It : What Today's Kids Need for Tomorrow's World For more information www.rehumaning.com

Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

Modern life has become a gauntlet of "dangerous weather" that frequently strips away our most basic human needs. In this episode, Emily speaks with author and strategist Stephanie Malia Kraus about her book, How We Thrive, and the essential practice of "rehumaning." Stephanie breaks down the four systemic forces, from hustle culture to addictive tech, that undermine our well-being and offers a roadmap for reclaiming play, wonder, and rest. The discussion bridges the gap between ancient Hawaiian wayfinding and modern neuroscience, highlighting the critical importance of restorative "downstates" and simple regulation tools for navigating an increasingly overstimulated world.Listen and Learn:How the Hawaiian tradition of Wayfinding teaches us to navigate a world that has "shifted on its axis" by anchoring into timeless human essentials, and influenced Stephanie's bookWhy the friction you feel in parenting isn't a personal failure, but a biological mismatch between our human nature and modern society Recognizing the four universal forces: Overtapped, Overworked, Overstimulated, and Overwrought, and understanding why feeling depleted isn't a personal failure, but a natural response to the "stormy" conditions of modern living Why our modern "social jet lag", the mismatch between our hectic schedules and our biological needs, is fueling a youth mental health crisis, and how reclaiming "human essentials" like sleep, play, and internal attunement can act as a biological superpower for both parents and teens How the practices of celebrating small wins, contributing to others, and nurturing an inborn sense of belief act as biological shields that restore our dignity and spark a protective sense of hope even in the most difficult seasons of life How "lemon squeezes", a simple technique of tensing and releasing your muscles for 20 seconds, uses the science of progressive muscle relaxation to signal safety to your nervous system and bring your body back into balance in less than a minute Resources:How We Thrive: Caring for Kids and Ourselves in a Changing World https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9781071957561 https://rehumaningourlives.substack.com/https://www.rehumaning.com/Connect with Stephanie on Social Media: https://www.youtube.com/@StephanieMaliaKrausshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/stephaniemaliakrauss/https://www.instagram.com/stephaniemaliakrauss/ About Stephanie Malia KraussStephanie Malia Krauss is an author, speaker, and strategist focused on rehumaning childhood and our lives. The Link Between Oral Function, Sleep Quality and ADHD in ChildrenThis week on the podcast, we're exploring a fascinating and important connection that more families need to know about: the link between oral function, sleep quality, and ADHD-like behaviours in children. We are joined by Tash Duffin from Whole Child Co, an occupational therapist, orofacial myofunctional therapist, and practitioner working in infant and early childhood sleep quality, feeding, and reflux. Tash also brings her own lived experience as a mum, which makes this conversation feel both deeply informed and incredibly practical.Together, they unpack how poor sleep quality, mouth breathing, and airway dysfunction can influence focus, impulsivity, emotional regulation, behaviour, and overall development. This episode is especially valuable for parents of children with an ADHD diagnosis, ADHD-like symptoms, restless sleep, mouth breathing, or ongoing feeding challenges. In this episode, we discuss:How poor sleep quality can mimic or worsen ADHD-like behaviours, including the impact of fragmented sleep on focus, impulsivity, emotional regulation, and hyperactivity. Why airway health and oral function matter so much, and how mouth breathing, sleep-disordered breathing, and poor oral rest posture can affect a child's development, behaviour, and nervous system regulation. The signs that may point to underlying sleep and airway issues, including open-mouth sleeping, restless sleep, unusual sleeping positions, bedwetting, grinding, dry lips, bad breath, selective eating, and daytime fatigue.Where parents can start if they're concerned, from observing their child's sleep more closely to seeking the right support and understanding why addressing root causes matters more than relying on quick fixes alone.

For many students, the meals offered at school are the most nourishing ones they will eat all day. The conversation also highlights how school cafeterias create unique opportunities for children to experience new foods, diverse flavors, and food-based learning that connects to the classroom. Whether you are a teacher, coach, or school leader, this conversation will help you see SEL less as a program and more as a sustainable way of being together that strengthens both people and practice. Healing often begins with the courage to ask questions—and the right guide to walk you through the answers. Dr. Jill Jenkins shares how pediatric oral health connects to far more than teeth, influencing everything from nursing success to sleep, speech, and even a child's overall development. With warmth and wisdom, she explains how individualized care and a collaborative approach with other practitioners can empower parents to identify tongue ties and make confident decisions. Her passion is a reminder that small interventions early on can create ripple effects of wellness for a lifetime. Key Takeaways: Understanding tongue ties and their subtle symptoms can help parents advocate for their child's health. A multidisciplinary approach—including dentists, lactation consultants, and bodywork—leads to better outcomes. Early, individualized care builds a foundation for proper oral function and overall well-being. Parents' instincts are powerful; trusting your gut can lead to answers others might overlook. Restoring oral function can positively impact sleep, feeding, and emotional connection between parent and child.   About Dr. Jill Jenkins: With almost 20 years of experience as a pediatric dentist, Dr Jill Jenkins felt like there wasn't a child she couldn't help through her pediatric dental practice, Jenkins Dentistry for Kids. That was until 2 of her long term employees had infants with tongue tie restrictions, requiring frenectomy procedures. Without the proper training and equipment, Dr Jenkins had to refer her patients to another practitioner at a vulnerable time for the families who had come to trust her. So, after extensive coursework and in-person observation with one of the most renowned tongue tie pediatric dentists in the field, Dr Richard Baxter, Dr Jenkins is thrilled to now be able to provide frenectomy services to patients through the establishment of Midwest Tongue Tie Professionals. By utilizing the state of the art Lightscalpel CO2 laser and working closely with functional providers, Dr Jenkins is confident that patients receive exceptional care before, during and post-procedure to ensure not only a precise tongue tie release, but also the movement and functionality the release is designed to achieve. Dr Jill Jenkins attended dental school and her pediatric residency at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry and Children's Mercy Hospital. After 15 years in her original partnership, Dr Jenkins pivoted to develop a practice based on her own patient and team centered philosophy to open Jenkins Dentistry for Kids with locations in Lenexa and Shawnee. She is also the owner and founder of Midwest Tongue Tie Professionals. Dr Jenkins has served organized dentistry in many volunteer roles throughout her career, most notably as President of the Fifth District Dental Society of Kansas, President of the State of Kansas Dental Association and currently as Chair of the KDA Membership committee, member of the ADA Council on Membership, and as a Delegate for the State of Kansas to the ADA. Dr Jenkins is a board certified pediatric dentist, and is involved with many professional organizations where she is a diplomate for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, fellow of the American College of Dentists and fellow of the International College of Dentists. She also received the Women Who Mean Business Award from the Kansas City Business Journal in 2017, where she continues to stay active. She has also been awarded Dentist of the Year both locally and at the state level. Dr Jenkins has been married for over 25 years and is fortunate to have 3 amazing children. www.jenkinsdentistryforkids.com www.midwesttonguetieprofessionals.com https://www.facebook.com/JenkinsDentistryKids/ https://www.instagram.com/jenkinsdentistryforkids/    Connect with Dr. Michelle and Bayleigh at: https://smallchangesbigshifts.com hello@smallchangesbigshifts.com https://www.linkedin.com/company/smallchangesbigshifts https://www.facebook.com/SmallChangesBigShifts https://www.instagram.com/smallchangesbigshiftsco   Thanks for listening! What does it truly mean to emerge as a middle leader? In this episode of Aspire to Lead, Gavin Grift, author of Emerge: Overcoming Common Challenges Associated with Middle Leadership, joins us to reimagine leadership in today's educational landscape. We explore the profound concept that "Clarity Precedes Competence," reframing hardships as stepping stones to growth, and the role self-awareness plays in transformative leadership. Gavin unpacks how busyness has become the modern-day "I'm fine" and reveals how leaders can reclaim their time for what truly matters. Dive into Gavin's fascinating Leadership Archetypes—the Pleaser, Ostrich, Imposter, Dynamo, and the Judge & Juror—and learn practical ways to recognize and grow beyond these tendencies. Whether you're navigating the complexities of middle leadership or looking to refine your approach, this episode delivers a fresh perspective and powerful strategies to help you emerge stronger and more focused than ever. Don't miss this engaging conversation with one of education's most inspiring voices! About Gavin Grift: Gavin Grift's career in education began in 1992 as a primary school teacher, where he spent 15 years fostering student agency and empowering students to take ownership of their learning. His innovative practices and dedication to improving teaching led him to roles beyond the classroom, including serving as a cluster educator, where he supported eight schools in developing instructional strategies to enhance student outcomes. This pivotal role marked Gavin's transition from classroom teaching to educational leadership, focusing on systemic improvements in teaching and learning. In 2007, Gavin co-authored Assessing the Whole Child with Jane Satchwell, emphasizing student-led portfolios and conferences to empower students in their assessment processes. The book's success sparked invitations to present their work nationally, leading to partnerships with Hawker Brownlow Education to expand their reach. Around this time, Gavin's interest in cognitive development deepened after attending a Cognitive Coaching seminar with Thinking Collaborative. This experience shaped his approach to education and leadership, ultimately prompting him to transition into full-time consultancy, working with schools to strengthen teaching practices. Gavin's career reached new heights as he became Executive Director of a professional development venture created by Hawker Brownlow Education and Solution Tree. Under the mentorship of Richard and Rebecca DuFour, Gavin helped schools across Australia implement Professional Learning Communities, fostering collaboration and transforming teaching practices. During this period, he co-authored Teachers as Architects of Learning and deepened his international influence as a Cognitive Coaching training associate, supporting educators globally in reflective practices and leadership development. His widely praised books, including Emerge, Transformative Collaboration,

Instead it offers a glimpse into the religious life of the atrium, a specially prepared place for children to live out their silent request: “Help me come closer to God by myself.” Here we can see the child's spiritual capabilities and perhaps even find in our own souls the child long burdened with religious information. This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. The desire to have this essential text available in audio has been a long-held goal for many. The work of many hands has combined to bring this release to life as an audiobook.    Find out more about CGS:    Learn more about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at www.cgsusa.org     Follow us on Social Media-  Facebook at “The United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd”  Instagram-  cgsusa  Twitter- @cgsusa  Pinterest- Natl Assoc of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd USA  YouTube- catechesisofthegoodshepherd
