Tanaya Winder and her friends in the indigenous community wanted to raise awareness about the estimated 1,181 missing and murdered indigenous women. They asked for donations of 1,181 single-sided earrings to represent each woman. They received 4,000. “There's so many metaphors, because sometimes people would send the earrings, and they would need repair. They got damaged in the shipment. Some were broken beyond repair. It's like, wow. Sometimes, we feel like trauma does that to us, too,” Tanaya tells hosts Bridgette Stumpf and Lindsey Silverberg. A member of the Duckwater Shoshone Nation, Tanaya is an author, singer, motivational speaker, and teaching artist who founded Dream Warriors Management in 2015. We also discuss dating differences in Korea (compared to The West), being a black woman in Korea (and how Koreans view black people in general) and competition within the expat community. We also get into “Tall Poppy Syndrome”, the great things about living in Korea, the Korean population possibly getting a bit bigger around the waistline and the oft-derided Korean beauty standards. This week's guest is Tanaya Joshi (she/her). This was SUCH an incredible and powerful conversation! I am so appreciative for Tanaya coming on to let us into her story. She came out 7 years ago, and now has such a happy ending but had quite a challenging journey getting here. She grew up in Mumbai and then moved over to the US at age 11. Navigating India's historically very anti-queer beliefs greatly impacted her ability to understand her identity, leading to a delay in making sense of the feelings that were there since adolescence. She shares with us about the confusing experience of having such deep feelings for her female friends during adolescence and how this was not reciprocated. She then shares about her process of finding her identity, falling for her now wife, and then the long journey that coming out has been. What was especially powerful about this conversation was how Tanaya let us all in to some challenging dynamics with her parents she's had to navigate with regards to acceptance and celebration of her identity. Tanaya was so so generous with her story, I felt so honored and touched to be witness to it and feel so grateful she wants to invite you all into this conversation too. About the guest:Tanaya is a product designer living in San Francisco, CA with her wife. Being practical and emotional is the bottom line. As a human, we always have a thought fight between mind and heart.  Sometimes being emotional gives you the feeling of what others are in their situations. But getting emotional about your feelings kills you in silence. Practical people have reasons and logic for overcoming their issues or managing any pressure. Yet passionate people are on the web of emotions where they lose courage and have no ability to break the walls around them. It is hard for them to develop in a new way, to adopt a new way of thinking, and to be very courageous. There are a lot of questions that surround practical vs emotional debate which we have covered in the 'Gehraiyaan' season of the Motivation Spark podcast. What is the difference between being practical v/s being emotional? Why are people less emotional and more practical these days? Why do people's feelings diminish fast?Is being a practical person a negative thing? How to find the balance between being practical and emotional?Connect with Rohit kokaneConnect with Tanaya AtrePodcast Created On HubHopper Studio

Once a student at Stanford driven to pursue a degree in law, Tanaya eventually turned to poetry seeing it as a way to help marginalized communities and survivors of trauma find their voices. Coming from a life rooted in music and ceremony she also tells us about the way she uses song and sound to help her access her poems and honor her own heritage. One morning, after long deliberation, they decided they wanted a better life for their families and packed their bags, trading in their comfortable lives for challenging ones. They conquered the difficulty of an unfamiliar language, navigated the brand new culture, and explored countless communities to fit into the new country. They left behind their parents, their loved ones, their closest friends. They are immigrants, and they are our everyday inspirations. Today we dive deep into our parents’ immigration journeys, and discuss our experiences growing up with immigrant parents - from everything to being embarrassed about their broken English, to learning to express love through every way except saying the L word.*NOTES*12:00 Sponsorship, ok Crystal clarified with her mom: a sponsor was needed if you were going to school in the new country and needed a student visa (Crystal's parents were enrolling in Canadian university to get their Canadian master degrees). The sponsor would sign with the intent/proof that they could pay for the education. If the person coming to study in the new country already has enough money/proof that they can pay for the education, then they would not require a sponsor for their student visa.American student visa rules , Canadian student visa rules27:22 Pork Floss51:18 Mission Peak is referring to a 6 mile hike in Fremont, popular for the totem pole and beautiful view at the top. Parts of it are super steep and the trail has 0 shade - which is why Tanaya and Jeesoo are so astonished.

What happens when a bestselling money author teams up with an SNL star to talk about financial literacy? You end up with some awesome videos featuring Kate McKinnon and Beth Kobliner! Beth joins us in the basement today to talk about the making of the videos and to share some much-needed financial literacy tips for children. How do you teach kids (or other adults) about money when you don't feel like YOU'RE a whiz with your cash? Beth shares some great tips that you'll be able to use today. In our headlines segment we'll talk about a recent lawsuit about "reverse churning." What does that even mean? We'll talk about why it's important most of the time to do absolutely nothing with your money, and we'll also discuss when you should expect to pay for advice and exactly what you're paying for when you work with an advisor. If you're in a fee-based account, are you paying for trades or for advice from the advisor? We'll debate that question on today's show.  In our second headline we'll talk to Mike Foy from JD Power and Associates. They have a new customer satisfaction survey that also shares LOTS of information about millennials. It appears that millennials are ditching their advisors in droves. Why is that happening? What are advisors missing? We'll ask Mike to dig into the JD Power survey findings on today's podcast...including which firms scored highest in customer satisfaction this year. Plus, as always, we throw out the Haven Life line to Tanaya, who's contributing to her state pension plan and her Roth every year. What's are some other considerations of places she should be contributing? We'll also, we pull out the stops and answer several letters in an effort to get caught up. We'll tackle minimum volatility funds, a confusing advisor recommendation, a listener who actually gets what we're doing with this podcast, and more.   Thanks to Blue Apron for supporting Stacking Benjamins. Jürgen Todenhöfer   Photo: Copyright: Jürgen Todenhöfer   Jürgen and I talk about “truth”, ISIS, brainwashing, the media, respect for other cultures and the real face of war. Biography   Jürgen Todenhöfer was born on the 12th of November 1940 as the son of a judge in the German city of Offenburg/Baden. In 1959 he completed his high school studies in the city of Freiburg. He then studied law and political science at the Universities of Munich, Paris, Bonn and Freiburg. He completed his training as a qualified lawyer in 1969 and received his doctorate in law from the University of Freiburg. In 1970 Todenhöfer joined the political party CDU (Christian Democratic Union). Shortly thereafter, he became personal assistant of the CDU’s Secretary General Dr. Bruno Heck in Bonn. In 1972 he became a judge at the Criminal Court of the city of Kaiserslautern. In the end of 1972, he was elected to the German parliament. He remained a member of the “Bundestag” until 1990. Todenhöfer attracted as much public attention for his political activities as he did for his humanitarian endeavours. In 1975, he traveled to Chile and met with the then dictator Augosto Pinochet. This meeting paved the way for the release of 4,500 political prisoners. Five years later, together with a photojournalist and some Afghan freedom fighters Todenhöfer traveled via Pakistan to Soviet occupied Afghanistan. As the CDU / CSU parliamentary group’s disarmament expert he made worldwide headlines with his far-reaching proposals. In 1982, he argued for a swift reduction of the U.S. and Soviet Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) by 50 percent. In the early 1980ies Todenhöfer urged German politicians to come out with a stronger commitment to Germany’s reunification. In 1984 he became the first CDU delegate to grant the public a complete insight into his sources of income. In 1987 Todenhöfer joined the “Hubert Burda Media” company, one of Europe’s largest publishing houses and became the Vice Chairman of its Board, the man behind Hubert Burda. He retired from politics in the year 1990. It was only after the terrorist attacks of the 11th of September 2001 in the United States, that he returned to the public. He was outspoken in his opposition to the U.S.’s war in Afghanistan and critical of the planned campaign against Iraq. He argued fervently in favor of diplomatic solutions. Todenhöfer published numerous best-selling books. His books center around his conviction that peace should be achieved through negotiations only. In 2003 he wrote “Who cries for Abdul and Tanaya?”, decribing the war-stricken lives of a young Afghan boy and a young Iraqi girl. He wrote “Andy and Marwa” in 2005 wherein  he describes the fate of the American Andy and the Iraqi girl Marwa during the Iraq war. It was followed in 2008 by the bestseller “Why do you kill, Zaid ?” which was followed most recently in 2013 by his last book “Thou shalt not kill”. In 2010 he wrote a semi-biographic book titled “Share your happiness”. Todenhöfer donates the royalties that he receives for his books and the larger part of his private wealth to children projects in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Jerusalem, in Syria and in the Congo and realizes other social projects as well, like the project that he has founded in Munich for elderly people who have grown lonely. Todenhöfer has devoted his attention to the relationship between the Western and the Muslim world. As a 20 -year-old freshman, he traveled to Algiers during the Algerian War, and to Tunisia during the crisis of Bizerte. He has since visited Arab and other Muslim countries on countless occasions. He urged the U.S. governments to settle their conflicts with Iraq, with Syria and with Iran through negotiations. He took up this matter in direct contact with the governments of Muslim countries. Todenhöfer is married to Françoise Laval, a French officer’s daughter. The couple, who separated in 2004, has three children. His hobbies included in his youth piloting and parachuting. Today he finds relaxation while skiing and while going for his regular Saturday afternoon football matches; he has a special interest in history and philosophy.   ----------   Please visit my website for more information on my podcasting, writing and public speaking.   With thanks to producer Josh Snethlage and Mixed Media Sound     See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Tanaya Winder is a citizen of the Duckwater Shoshone Tribe. She is also Pyramid Lake Paiute, and Southern Ute. She grew up in Ignacio, Colorado, on the Southern Ute Reservation. She describes herself as a writer, artist, manager, and oh yeah, the Director of an Upward Bound program. As a kid, Tanaya knew she would attend Stanford. She just knew it. Tanaya thought she would become a lawyer, but wanted some exposure to liberal arts while an undergraduate. She applied to other schools, and was admitted to these schools, but ultimately decided to fulfill her goal that she had for years to attend Stanford. There were some moments when the certainty was in question. After her grandfather passed away while she was in high school, she spent time working at a casino instead of attending school (though she had enough credits). She thought that she would just continue working at the casino until she realized her grandfather would want her to finish her education. When she returned to school, one of the few classes that would allow her to enroll was a creative writing class. Tanaya Winder found the writing helped her through the difficult time after her grandfather’s death. While attending Stanford, Tanaya eventually switched majors to focus on her creative side. It took time for her to overcome imposter syndrome. After enduring a friend’s suicide, she found that the creative writing continued to help her process her grief. She eventually went on to earn a Master's of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico, all the while trying to find her voice as an artist. She did, and now she has a collection of works published in the book Words Like Love. While attending school she also began working for Upward Bound after a position opened that was too good to pass up. This is where The Hustle emerged. To pay for her tuition she also was teaching at the University of New Mexico. For a while, she was commuting between Albuquerque and Boulder. After completing her degree, the Director position opened up with Upward Bound and she was able to step into the role at Boulder. She continued her hustle; teaching at the University of New Mexico, and then added a new title to the mix: manager. Tanaya Winder met Frank Waln during a performance at the University of Colorado. They became friends and eventually, he asked her to be his manager. She also now manages Mic Jordan and Tall Paul.   Last but not least, Tanaya Winder and Frank Waln created Dream Warriors Scholarship to support Native American artists in higher education. It’s awesome to see such a talented person putting all of their energy into the world through a variety of outlets Be sure to check out Tanaya’s work, and the artists that she is supporting through her management and through the scholarship.
