Today's True Weird Stuff - The Appetite Tarrare was a French Showman in the 1700s who had an insatiable appetite. His eternal hunger terrorized him to the point he literally tried to consume everything: live animals, garbage, inanimate objects, and even human flesh. The curious case of the 100lb Tarrare baffled even the greatest medical minds, and the medical findings of his autopsy were the definition of truly weird stuff.
Originally released July 10, 2023. Tarrare was a French 18th century man who is known to history for having the largest appetite known to man. He would regularly eat ridiculous amounts of food without ever gaining weight. This included entire baskets of fruit, piles of garbage, rocks, corks, dogs, cats, a quarter of a cow, and - reportedly - an entire living 14-month old toddler! In this episode, we examine the case of the insatiable Tarrare and then play the quick quiz with Magician Rebecca Spectre. (Tarrare, The Insatiable Glutton) *** A sickly-sweet smell and then burning sensations, nausea, and partial paralysis. It began with one, then many in a small town in Illinois. It was a gas attack – but who was the culprit? Or even stranger – was it in everyone's imaginations? (Who Was The Mad Gasser of Mattoon?) *** A baby begins screaming when her mother moves them into a new apartment. (Mother's Helper) *** “Momo” may sound like a funny name – but it was no laughing matter to Missouri residents trying to track down the huge, black, hairy monster. (The Missouri Monster) *** A veteran claims a pastor was an alien involved in a conspiracy here on Earth, with members of congress, to enslave all humans – and that's why he shot him in the head. (Aliens and Attempted Murder) *** Attention in Puerto Rico has recently turned to a recurring horror – a real life gargoyle attacking and sucking the blood from their chickens. (The Gargoyle of Puerto Rico) *** A hunter suddenly became the hunted of a mysterious creature in Wyoming. (I Faced A Wendigo) *** A man and his family experience strange and terrifying events in their home located next to a meteor crater. (I've Never Told My Story) *** Part bat. Part bigfoot. What has been unfortunately named “Batsquatch” sounds like a B-list villain in a DC comic taking on the Caped Crusader, but for some who live in Washington state near Mt. Tekst: Patrick Bassant, E.J. Huizinga-Onnekes, George Gould & Walter Pyle. Additionele stem: Paul den Arend. This week we have a couple of early tall tales or urban legends from the 18th and 19th century. First up is Tarrare, a French street performer and sometime soldier that was constantly hungry, eating literally anything organic he could get his hands on. The second being Edward Mordrake, a supposed heir to a wealthy family that had a second face on the back of his head that whispered bad things to him at night. Both fascinating, and both most likely tall tales, but certainly worth a listen.
Send us a Text Message. In this secretive episode of Sorry, We Tried, Spencer shares the story of the man who could (and did) eat anything, Tarrare. He ate rocks, bones, whole live animals, or anything else he could get his hands on. He's a medical mystery that baffled French doctors in the 1700s until he found a new calling as the world's worst soldier and spy. Also in this episode, guest host Cayson copies Robby's iconic jokes by accident. Harrison tries to throw in some bizarre conspiracies about architecture that he saw online. Spencer tries to explain modern YouTube trends. And the guys decide to bring back "quackery."As always, big thanks to Richard Hackley for all our intro and outro music. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Tarrare. Tarrare, liked to eat. Tarrier liked to eat a lot. As a baby, anything left with Tarrare would be gobbled. The child could consume his own bodyweight in meat. Was this a mutant? An X-Man? The first X-Person? A ghoul or some other form of monster? Or was Tarrare the very embodiment of gluttony? An infectious literal sin roaming the world? Regardless, Tarrare would go on to live quite the life - performing on the streets before ending up in the French military. There, Tarrare would become secret agent 00-hungry but there was a fatal flaw in Tarrare's career. No matter what Tarrare did, Tarrare was still hungry. Did Tarrare have a wormhole inside his tum-tum? Or can human physiology, neurology, psychology and psychiatry explain this? This is all a true story… All that and more on this week's file. (Aliens and Attempted Murder) *** While most of the attention in Puerto Rico is being directed at the continuing slow recovery from Hurricane Maria, one small town there is dealing with a second horror – a real life gargoyle attacking and sucking the blood from their chickens. (Gargoyle of Puerto Rico) *** A hunter suddenly became the hunted of a mysterious creature in Wyoming. (I Faced A Wendigo) *** Tarrare, an 18th-century French showman, could eat enough to feed 15 people and swallow cats whole — but his stomach was never satisfied, even to the point, he was rumored, to consume human flesh. (Tarrare, The Insatiable Glutton) *** A man and his family experience strange and terrifying events in their home located next to a meteor crater. (I've Never Told My Story) *** Part bat. Part bigfoot. What has been unfortunately named “Batsquatch” sounds like a B-list villain in a DC comic taking on the Caped Crusader, but for some who live in Washington state near Mt. St. Helens, it's not imaginary at all. (Bizarre Encounters With Batsquatch) *** If you mention gnomes to someone, most think of those tiny ceramic or concrete figurines people place in gardens or on their front doorstep to greet visitors. But in a certain portion of England, if you mention gnomes – you get the real thing. (The Mysterious Gnomes of Wollaton Park) *** We go back to a normal, sunny Tuesday morning in 2001 – when the world changed forever after a terrorist attack on the U.S., left families in despair, a country in fear, and spirits of those lost still wandering ground zero to this day. In the modern era, few famous eaters are household names. Perhaps the only one who has risen to that level is Joey Chestnut. However, that hasn't always been the case. In the years of the sideshow, people would line up to watch people eat stuff—a strange hobby. One of the more famous cases of people who live off of eating was the man known as Tarrare. His astounding ability to swallow just about anything whole and survive drew crowds from around Europe. His abilities even attracted doctors. In hopes of understanding what allowed him to eat things that would usually kill, Tarrare became the subject of research. That research led to his use in the military as an espionage agent. No one else in history can say that their diet made them a government asset. There is no one like Tarrare.Things I Learned Last Night is an educational comedy podcast where best friends Jaron Myers and Tim Stone talk about random topics and have fun all along the way.
