If you live in the Pacific Northwest, chances are you appreciate the region's unspoiled natural beauty especially forests, farms, shorelines, parks and other natural areas. Join us today for a conversation with Nick Bratton, Senior Director of Policy for Forterra. Since 1989, Forterra has secured over 275,000 acres of land through over 450 land transactions. From the farmlands and river canyons of Yakima to the estuaries and forests of Washington's coastline, Nick's organization safeguards a healthy environment while fostering community resilience through land acquisition. In this episode Nick will explains how Forterra has helped smaller cities (including Issaquah, Tukwila, Everett, and Kirkland) transition from suburbs into small urban areas while embracing land stewardship. Finally, he provides a primer on Forterra's innovative transfer of development rights (or TDRs) from the rural areas and wilderness to cities like Seattle, for the benefit of both.

After Steve Nygren brought small and large land owners in Chattahoochee Hills on board his development plan, it was time to take the project to the state. Three state foundations and a few private citizens had pledged money to invest in the project, and Governor Barnes was ready to push legislation through to allow Chattahoochee Hill Country to change land rights in the region. When Barnes didn't get re-elected, most of these investments disappeared. One person stayed in, and that money was used to buy the first TDRs from two land owners.Questions Answered:What were the steps you had to take to start building? What are development rights? How does a transfer development right work? What is the most photographed place in Serenbe? Why are chainlink fences always around conventional water water treatment facilities? Why should we choose to build in a new way?How is balanced development possible? Why are government departments so siloed? NASA is upgrading the space network it uses to communicate with astronauts and low-Earth orbiting. Earlier this month, NASA added Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) to its network. TDRS brings in data from more than 40 assets, including the International Space Station. Greg Heckler, Telecommunications Systems Manager at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, spoke with Federal News Radio's Eric White on Federal Drive with Tom Temin about the new initiative.

Over the last 50 years, New York City has pioneered the use of transfer of development rights (TDRs) to achieve planning and urban design goals, examples include landmark transfers, large-scale development provisions and Special District mechanisms like the High Line and the Grand Central and Theater Subdistricts. As the real estate market continues its ascent, and as calls to create or restrict TDR programs proliferate, what can we learn from the past to guide the use of TDRs in the future? The Department of City Planning (DCP) has received several proposals to create new TDR mechanisms in order to unlock floor area, generate revenue for public benefits or achieve other planning objectives. They have also heard calls from various quarters to reform existing mechanisms in order to facilitate their use or to subject them to greater public oversight. These varying viewpoints are represented on the panels at the conference.
