March 3, 2021 75 Minutes Dave Lankes & Mike Eisenberg It pretty much happened overnight: schools are closed, kids are home, teaching and learning are online, parents are responsible for coordinating it all. While every aspect of life has been affected by the pandemic, no sector has been more quickly and more significantly by the pandemic than education – on all levels. The most direct impact is on students, parents, and teachers, but it really affects everyone.  In this episode, we try to get a handle on what's going on and what it means—immediate, short-, and long-term. We do so by speaking with someone who has perspectives on the details but also the big picture, pre-K to 12 and beyond: Colet Bartow, Teaching and Learning Senior Manager, Montana Office of Public Instruction. Do something different this holiday season by giving someone a gift that will keep giving.  Give the gift of knowledge that will provide a long-lasting benefit and grow in value over time.  Today so much effort and time are spent on being “in the moment”, with very little time spent on planning for the future.  Everything has to happen now!  "I want an answer to my work issue by clicking on this phone app – now!"  Or, "I want a job paying more money because I want to live a certain lifestyle – now! Or, even better, I want the raise and promotion (that someone else worked hard to acquire) - now!  Even though I feel I am the right candidate, so what I didn’t take the employee advancement courses at work that would have qualified me for the raise and promotion."  I am sure that you've heard all of these scenarios before, ones that I have come across as a trainer with over 25 years of employee training and working as a freelancer facilitating computer literacy/Microsoft Office Application classes.  Why not take this opportunity to empower someone (family member, friend, or co-worker) to help them help themselves.  Show them you really care by helping them invest in building up their technology literacy?  Give that person the “Gift of Knowledge” this holiday season.

There are two "technology literacy" gaps in the workplace! 25 years ago, I started working in an office-type environment where one’s technology literacy was based on the ability to "use" a computer, a printer, a copy machine, and a fax machine in order to perform his/her daily job duties. So much has changed since then, especially when it comes to administrative-type tasks and duties that were once the sole responsibility of the administrative department or staff within an organization.  Now with so much information easily accessible in an unbelievably face-paced workplace, the dependency of an "administrative only" staff breaks the budget or it puts management in a tough position of dealing with their own "technology literacy" gap that exists between them and the admin line worker.   As a result of this, TAB Training & Consulting, LLC has created a unique service that aims to bridge the gap that exists between the employee and job-related admin tasks and the gap that exists between management and the admin front-line employees.  What used to be, and still is in many cases, the headache of a company's IT Department that exhausts staff resources, we are addressing through the employee onboarding process and by offering company-oriented and goal-specific training to relieve the stress caused due to the lack of administrative-related daily tasks.  Learn more about how we plan to address this situation through our virtual learning platform as we empower employees to become more efficient, effective, and productive users of technology.

Why You Matter; And Why It Matters... By Edward Robinson It's The EdRoboTech.com Podcast Series for Friday March 23, 2018. This is Episode 34. I'm Edward Robinson!   Have you ever come to work, and solved a problem, that saved the day? Did you have people counting on you to perform, and looking to you for help, guidance, or support? That's a good feeling. That feeling says,"You are needed. You are important. You are a mission critical part of this operation". Isn't it great when you come through with a great idea, that saves the day? Yes, it truly is. People admire that person. They may emulate you. Some may even envy you. But, on the other hand, have you ever felt that the whole operation could go on without you? That you don't matter? That someone else has all the answers, and you are just a part of the crowd? I want to let you know that especially in schools, there are many people who make a difference each school day. If you are one of those people, you may not always be noticed as a winner, or as an awesome contributor. But, when each member of the school district does their job effectively, wonderful things can happen. It is important to know that your contribution sometimes may go unnoticed. But, it is still very valuable. Think, for example of a 300 year old tree. You may eat lunch next to that tree, but never see the root structure that supports it and keeps it healthy and strong. Being a support to students who need encouragement is not only admirable, but it is vital. Let's talk about Encouragement: Teachers need encouragement, so that they can know and remember what is important about themselves as individuals, and what they became a teacher to do in the first place. They need to be there for their students. Students need encouragement, because sometimes they are going through a tough time. They may try to understand tragedy, and pain, and need leadership to inspire them to be their best selves. They need to know that it is going to be alright, and that the sun will come up tomorrow, like the song, of that name, in the play called Annie. Parents need encouragement, because they are trusting their precious children with educators throughout each school day, hoping that they will return to them no worse for wear, hopefully with positive experiences and knowledge from the school day. They need to know that schools will be a safe, learning zone, for their children. Administrators need encouragement, too because they need to make decisions to protect all the people who visit, attend, work, at school campuses. They may have to make decisions and choices to protect staff and students that are dynamic, or decisive, at times, to protect lives. Encouragement makes you feel more capable to succeed. Encouragement lets you know what's possible. Inspiration is the wind beneath your wings. Inspiration is motivation to do something meaningful or constructive. School safety is very important. But, there are behaviors that we can do to keep our schools safe: Metal detectors in schools will likely expose concealed weapons. Safety drills: shelter in place, lockdown, evacuation, and/or perimeter drills School security guards can keep schools safe, if they are administered wisely. Keeping unauthorized persons off campuses will also help. People need to know that things can be alright again. Education must continue, but it is smart to make wise improvements that will insure safety, improve morale, and keep the job of the K-12 schools happening: literacy. And in our present society Technology Literacy is very important. Not just knowing how to read, write, add and subtract, etc. But knowing how to utilize computer programs and applications effectively, so that our learners will function effectively in an emerging digital world that requires those skills. Thanks so much for clicking in, and we'll see you online!

Often times we take for granted just how important technology literacy is in our personal, professional and academic lives. For example, I am a diabetic and therefore it is very important for me to monitor my glucose levels; I use Microsoft Excel to track my glucose readings, the times at which I take my glucose readings, the food that I have eaten that day and I also track the highs, lows and averages for the week.  I even have charts and graphs to display trends in a pictorial way.  Tracking this information allows me to make any necessary changes to my diet, exercise routine and the occasional treat - a piece of "real" lemon cake (not sugar free). That is just one of many ways that I use technology to help me on a personal level.  It is only through knowing about Microsoft Excel and spreadsheets that I would have known to use this program to help me with my health. While society is truly fortunate to possess new technologies that did not exist 10-20 years ago; there still seems to be a large disparity between those that have access and can maximize the benefits of such technological advancement to achieve academic, personal, and professional success versus those that do not have the same access to technology.  However, I want to point out a shift in the Paradigm regarding how we define the word “access” when it comes to technology literacy (more to come about this shift during the broadcast). During this broadcast I will share my personal experiences from the past 10 months that strongly point to the importance of technology literacy at home, in the workplace and in the community.  Today’s broadcast will be one of many efforts taken on by TAB Training & Consulting, LLC as a vehicle for bridging the technology literacy gap that exists in technologically challenged communities (more on that new “category” in the broadcast). Join me and listen in on what I have learned this year and for my suggestions on how to continue the momentum that has been created here in Concord, NC that can be replicated in any other technologically-challenged community in the US.  Join me as I plan for a 2014 campaign designed to make great strides in your academic, personal and professional lives by increasing your knowledge of computer and technology literacy.
