Send me a message. What makes for effective teaching in Design & Technology? Returning after a brief hiatus, I delve into the research-backed pedagogical approaches that can transform D&T education. This episode synthesizes my recent exploration of teaching strategies, clarifying the crucial distinction between curriculum (what we teach) and pedagogy (how we develop student capabilities). At the heart of D&T education lies a persistent misconception I'm determined to challenge: there is no single, correct design process. Drawing on extensive research, I outline four foundational pedagogical approaches: the traditional design-and-make activity, mainly designing (where imagination isn't limited by technical constraints), mainly making (focused on skill development), and exploring technology in society. Throughout these approaches, teachers must navigate the spectrum between restrictive and expansive teaching choices, deciding when to provide structure and when to foster independent thinking.Recording and documenting the design journey presents another pedagogical decision point. Are traditional booklets limiting student creativity? Could engineer's notebooks, digital portfolios, or multimedia approaches offer more authentic documentation? I examine how deliberate choices about design recording can either restrict or enhance student learning. This episode provides practical guidance for D&T educators committed to moving beyond ritualistic approaches while preparing for my upcoming episode on assessment strategies. Links, References and Resources MentionedKay Stables' chapter on signature pedagogies: You can find her chapter titled "Signature Pedagogies for Designing: A Speculative Framework for Supporting Learning and Teaching in Design and Technology Education" on SpringerLink.Matt McLain's research on expansive and restrictive approaches in design and technology education: His work on this topic can be found in his thesis on the Liverpool John Moores University repository and in the International Journal of Technology and Design Education.Design fiction as a methodology for designing in unfamiliar contexts: You can explore this methodology in the DRS Digital Library and the Nordes conference proceedings. The Young Foresight Project (early 2000s): Information about this project is available on SpringerLink.Todd Kelly's work on the engineer's notebook as a design assessment tool: His work is detailed in an article on Purdue University's website and on ERIC.Support the showIf you like the podcast, you can always buy me a coffee to say 'thanks!'Please offer your feedback about the show or ideas for future episodes and topics by connecting with me on Threads @hardy_alison or by emailing me.If you listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, please take a moment to rate and/or review the show. While FreshEd is away, we are going to replay some of our favourite episodes about education in a digital society. -- Children are inundated with technology. Video games, smartphones, and computers are common in the lives of today's digital generation. With school closures from the covid-19 pandemic, learning from home only added to the screen time overload for many children. How do children and young people use and are affected by technological transformations in their everyday lives? How are schools and education systems adapting to these changes? And what might we learn from the coronavirus when it comes to technology and education? With me is Halla Holmarsdottir a Professor in the Faculty of Education and International Studies at the Oslo Metropolitan University in Norway. She is currently the coordinator of a large-scale European Research project funded by Horizon 2020 (grant agreement No 870548) entitled The Impact of Technological Transformations on the Digital Generation (DigiGen). The DigiGen project focuses on the impact of digital technology on the lives of children and young people primarily in Europe. freshedpodcast.com/Holmarsdottir/ -- Get in touch! The entrenched woke elites within our education system aim to dismantle the innocence of our children, erode parental rights, and undermine community authority over schools. Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters has boldly confronted them—and he's winning. Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters taught eight years as a high school history teacher in his hometown at McAlester High School. During his time at MHS, Walters taught Advanced Placement courses in World History, U.S. History and U.S. Government. He also taught on-level history classes, special education classes and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes. The Oklahoma State Department of Education named Walters as an Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Finalist in 2016. Previously, Walters was appointed as Secretary of Public Education for the State of Oklahoma by Governor Kevin Stitt in September of 2020 where he oversaw various agencies, boards and commissions, including the State Board of Education, College and University Boards of Regents or Trustees, Office of Educational Quality and Accountability and the State Board of Career and Technology Education. Whatever good things we build end up building us. -Jim Rohn In today's episode we chat with Michael Lee coordinator of the Construction Technology Program at Texarkana College in Texarkana, TX. We learn of his back story which led him to this role. He thoughtfully describes the approach he has taken to build the construction technology department at Texarkana College. Michael describes the students that come through the program, where they come from, what they're taught, and where they end up working. He spends extra effort in enriching his instruction by getting the students out into the field at events, (like the recent RESNET Texas Home Builders Association event), into factories or by bringing in guest instructors. We also discuss how he includes the principles of energy efficient construction including the house as a system approach, HERS scoring and using the latest techniques and materials. This is a short, very, very short, Halloween story for you. Keep it a secret. Do not share it. Not mention it. Do not even think about it if you want. Have a chance to keep your soul and survive the eyes of the AI.The StoryIn the desolation the sky itself seemed to warp and twist, becoming a canvas for empty matrix patterns. Ethereal eyes floated high above, casting haunting glows over the town below. The watchers, always observing, always judging, and never breathing. The streets lined with twisted trees, their branches heavy with jack-o'-lanterns glowing of a light imbued with binary code. Their faces seemed to flicker and shift, revealing glimpses of the countless souls whose data had been harvested.Shadowy, emptied, citizen figures moved through the streets; parched digital egos, mere silhouettes of what was flesh and blood. Their faces, devoid of emotion, were a testament to a life under ceaseless surveillance.Amidst this world of shadows and whispers, freedom remained a dream, and when Eleanor noticed the glitches in the matrix, that dream, for many, became hope. The eyes in the sky, for all their omnipotence, had blind spots, biases, and the very human imperfect humanity that created them and the now they feasted on.But Eleanor disappeared. The only trace left of her was her shadow laying on the ground and a chilling note:"Your thoughts could be next... but do we even care?"- The EndThis short story was brought to you by what you could consider the mortal remain of a human cognition and his faithful AI companion. Who is who, and what is what, is up to you to decide.Very quickly written and illustrated by Me and AI - mostly written by me cause AI ain't that good at #writing these things anyway. The illustration? Well that is another story, maybe for another time. The reading? Well, that is all the AI (and Halloween Version of it) with my art direction, because I am no actor and I do not pretend to be one.

This back-to-school season, parents across the country have something new on their supply list: agency over their child's education. The woke elites in charge of America's education system want to destroy children's innocence, parents' rights, and communities' authority over their schools. In these fights, Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters is on the front lines.___________________Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters taught eight years as a high school history teacher in his hometown at McAlester High School. Kanika Tolver, CEO and Author of Career Rehab discusses how to take charge of your career and learn valuable tips on diversifying your education and navigating tech layoffs.
Tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Netflix and Meta have laid off a total of more than 100,000 employees in 2023. Yet, Minnesota alone had 8,460 tech job postings in the month of February but not enough skilled workers to fill them, according to reports from the Minnesota Technology Association. Also, for the third year in a row, Minnesota is dead last in the country when it comes to teaching K-12 students computer science in public schools. MPR News host Angela Davis speaks with local tech experts about why giant companies are laying off so many workers, and what's being done to address the gap between open tech jobs and a lack of skilled workers in our state. Guests: Sharon Kennedy Vickers is the CEO of Software For Good, a company that makes apps and platforms that liberate and empower. In the past she was the chief information officer for the City of Saint Paul, overseeing cybersecurity, infrastructure and operations, digital solutions, technology business management and communications. Joel Crandall is the vice president of talent for the Minnesota Technology Association. His passion is harnessing meaningful relationships and technical solutions to solve intractable challenges. Prior to joining MnTech, Joel held many roles over nearly 12 years at Genesys Works in the Twin Cities — a talent pipeline for students in underserved communities pursuing careers in business technology. Today's complex problems demand a radically new way of thinking — one in which art, technology, and science converge to expand our creativity and augment our insight. Creativity must be combined with the ability to execute; the leaders and innovators of the future will have to understand this balance and manage such complexities as climate change and pandemics.
