Join our hosts Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines as they chat with Jess Bost, CFP at Lake Avenue Financial. She's spent over 15 years coaching people to get from where they are to where they want to be. It's a passion that finds its roots in her inspiring journey to overcome her own financial struggles. Jess reflects on how the shock of that revelation compelled her to take ownership of her finances, leading her down a path into the world of financial services and, thankfully, eventual reconciliation with her partner. Through Jess's experiences, you'll learn why it's so important to get clear about your strengths and weaknesses around financial management, as well as, if applicable, those of your partner. Jason Tartick, a former banker and TV star from The Bachelorette, discusses finances in relationships. He describes eight crucial questions about money that every couple should discuss. When a couple is dating, but before they get serious, he says, each person should divulge their debt-to-income ratio. This is your monthly debt payments divided by your gross monthly income. Keeping this ratio below 30-40% is crucial for financial stability. Banks consider this when approving loans. Couples still in the dating stage should also discuss their credit scores. If you're thinking about becoming serious with someone, you need to understand their history with debt, and their attitude towards debt, since you'll likely be co-borrowing together if the relationship lasts. A couple with a good credit score can save around $100,000 on a $300,000 mortgage over 30 years. Couples should avoid shaming or blaming each other during these money conversations, he says. The goal is to understand each others' financial attitudes, habits and history -- not to point fingers or make judgments. After marriage or lifetime commitment, Jason emphasizes the importance of having both individual and joint bank accounts. This allows each person to enjoy autonomy, while also contributing towards shared expenses. Regularly reviewing your net worth as a couple provides transparency and helps avoid misunderstandings. He also talks about financial infidelity -- what is it, and how can you spot it? Finally, Jason encourages couples to discuss spending habits, in order to understand each others' values and goals. Here's a great question to ask your boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse or partner: "If you had an unlimited budget, what's the first thing you would you spend it on?" The answer reveals the persons' priorities. For more information, visit the show notes at https://affordanything.com/episode513 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This lesson felt hard to record and it may feel very uncomfortable to listen to. It is also a lesson that is really important to understand. Financial Infidelity is the topic of this week's lesson. Overall financial infidelity is explained as when one partner in a relationship hides financial actions, assets, or debts from the other. It can also happen when you are hiding these from yourself. This topic is something that happens often but it is not something we typically talk about because it is uncomfortable and brings up a lot of different emotions. In this episode Linda helps you understand what it is and most importantly what to do if it is something that you have experienced or are experiencing. Be gentle with yourself as you listen to this week's lesson.
2024 is going to be a big year for me personally and professionally but it unfortunately means the end of new content for Martinis and Your Money. It's been quite the journey and I still have seven more months to go. This month I'm talking about relationships and money. It's estimated that money problems lead to 20 - 40% of divorces and from my seat as a financial planner for over the last 12 years, I can tell you that those numbers are accurate. This month we're going to talk about the pitfalls money can have on relationships but also the solutions to building a financially healthy and safe foundation for two people to navigate. This week I'm talking about financial infidelity and joining me to discuss this topic is Tracy Coenen, a forensic accountant and author of the book Find Me the Money. Tracy joins me to share some of the lessons she's learned about financial infidelity after years of uncovering it as well as what people should know if they suspect it's happening in their relationship.
