This week, I record late in the evening from my bed which was a nice change of scenery. Two events occurred during the day that I felt were great topics to talk about. The focus of the show is: 1) channeling your energy to utilize negative circumstances to your advantage, and 2) always going above and beyond to get better and test your limits. The latter portion came up after rolling with my friend, Dustin from Pure MMA. Speaking of Pure, I also give a shoutout to all the fighters and coaches who put on a phenomenal show at the MMA Pro League event this past Saturday. We love you guys and you're a bunch of savages.

This episode features Thomas Cloyd, who is competing in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for Team U2FP next Sunday, October 9th. Thomas' reasons for joining Team U2FP go well beyond just this race. His history with U2FP goes back almost a decade when he helped Matthew Rodreick and others in the SCI community pass the SCI/TBI Research Grant bill here in Minnesota in 2015. That bill was the catalyst for U2FP's Cure Advocacy Network (CAN), which has now passed over $25M in SCI research funding via these legislative advocacy efforts. And since it's hard to get grant money to lobby state legislatures, Team U2FP is one of our primary sources of funding for CAN. Thomas speaks to the power he felt being a part of that first organizing effort, how he completed his first marathon ever for Team U2FP in a quad rugby chair, and some of the unique benefits - both physically and emotionally - that he saw in himself while training for this event and why you should consider testing your own limits on behalf of the SCI community. Consider donating to Thomas' race efforts here (https://u2fp.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/u2fp/campaign.jsp?campaign=106&fundraiser=10006914&). And if you're inspired to throw down and join Thomas as a member of Team U2FP, either in the Chicago Marathon next year, or in a physical challenge or race of your choosing, email us here: marathon@u2fp.org. Want to hear more from Thomas? Check him out on episodes 52 and 53 of CureCast - our popular series on sexual function where he participated in a candid discussion about sex after SCI.

Dean and Paula discuss a variety of topics starting with their recent vacation to Gulf Shores, Alabama. They also review an effort-based workout Paula recently completed and the importance of going by feel. It's important to not be slave to your pace or you may cut yourself short in terms of what you can achieve. Sometimes you need to test your limits to know where your limits are. Also in this episode, they discuss: The Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) Lactate blood testing mid-workout The World Championship of Track and Field The Tour de France Fast times in Germany RyR is a team of runners and triathletes who receive comprehensive and customized coaching. The team name has dual meanings. The first is based in Hebrews 12:1 in which Christians are instructed to run the race set before us. In this context, RyR stands for Run your Race, with an emphasis on meeting you (the athlete) where you are and coming alongside you to help you reach your goals. The verse emphasizes patience, endurance, and perseverance. These qualities are essential for success as both athletes and coaches. The second meaning is based on the enduring friendship and marriage between the founding coaches, Dean and Paula Roberts. In this context, RyR stands for Roberts and Roberts. While our primary mission is to help athletes set and reach fitness and performance goals, we understand that this must occur within the context of each athlete's daily life. We strive to form an individual relationship with each athlete and make sure weekly training fits seamlessly into family life and work schedules.

Available On: iTunes  | Google Play  | Stitcher  | Spotify Throughout his career, Dr. Michael Gervais has followed a central question: Is there a common thread connecting those who change how we understand how the world works? As a high-performance psychologist, published, peer-reviewed author and recognized speaker on optimal human performance, Michael Gervais works in the trenches of high-stakes environments, where there is no luxury for mistakes, hesitation, or failure to respond. While Dr. Gervais’ roster includes an MVP from every major sport, internationally acclaimed artists and musicians and Fortune 100 CEO’s, he is also the Co-Founder of Compete to Create, whose mission is to help people become the best they can be. He recognizes that all of us are required to perform daily. We all navigate our own high-stakes environments and can benefit just as much with the right mindset training. Ultimately, Dr. Gervais’ goal is to unpack, then decode, how the greatest performers in the world use their minds to pursue the boundaries of human potential. To accelerate that aim, he has curated conversations with those who have dedicated their life toward Finding Mastery. Applying that passion to explore human performance boundaries to his personal life, Dr. Gervais is an avid surfer who also enjoys skiing Canada’s backcountry. He has come to understand that the answer to his central question lies in the space between hesitation and commitment. From Andy: I must say that this was one of the most fun and informative conversations I've had in recent memory - with anyone. Michael is as knowledgeable as he is personable, and his enthusiasm for the conversation about mastery is infectious. I learned a bunch of new things that have already opened up new wormholes of learning to dive into -- all that fascinates me. Enjoy! I asked Traver Boehm back as a guest on the podcast this week specifically to talk about the impact he’s felt from disconnecting from electronic media over the course of the past year. He’s had personal experience - taking multiple month-long breaks from any sort of online interaction as well as recurring short breaks over the course of his daily routine. This have been part of his Year To Live Project - something he started at the beginning of 2016 in an attempt to answer the question for himself, “What would you do if you knew you only had a year to live?” One of the things he took on was a month in the wilderness with only a knife and compass (and the clothes on his back). It was particularly gnarly. He describes it as 28-days of shivering, dealing with extreme hunger, cold, and sleep deprivation. Fascinating as well was how he had to deal with the “not-knowingness” of what would happen tomorrow - or, as he called it, breaking his addiction to future knowledge. Later in the year, he studied at the Esalen Institute, working on his spiritual practice while cleaning toilets (that paid his room and board). The rule there at meal times - no electronics,  enforced by a complete shut-off of the wi-fi system (and there’s no cell service option either). If you missed his first appearance as a guest on the show, it’s an episode not to be missed. Check it out here. Here are some of the highlights of the podcast: How speaking at TEDx is like an MMA fight Learning how to survive for 28 days in the wilderness with nothing but a knife, water, first aid kit, a compass, the clothes on his back, and a five-foot-square sheet Dealing with extreme hunger and cold 28 days of shivering and sleep deprivation Gratitude in the face of misery — and how things could always be worse Surrendering to life the way it is without giving up Taking personal responsibility Breaking the addiction to future knowledge and living in the moment Translating ancient yogic philosophy into current-day leadership Moment-to-moment choices and consciousness Tips for disconnecting from the constant stream of information and communication Seeing family patterns and behaviors that you despise and thought weren’t in you and waking up to the fact they are  I got so much value from hearing about Traver’s experiences — living and learning through him. I know you’ll love it too.
