Carey Pinkowski is the longest serving race director of a World Marathon Major race, having taken the helm at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon way back in 1990. Before that, he was an elite runner with personal bests ranging from 4:01 in the mile to 2:20:43 in the marathon. This year's Chicago is just three weeks away on Sunday, October 13. As always it will feature a big and star-studded field of runners. In his three-plus decades with the Chicago Marathon, Pinkowski has become known for putting on a super-fast race for elite competitors, and a super-efficient race for midpackers. Last year, Kelvin Kiptum set the marathon world record in Chicago, running 2:00:35. He covered the second half of the distance in an astounding 59:47. This year's Chicago is expected to host more than 50,000 starters--the most ever. They come for the big city vibe, the fast tour of many neighborhoods, and the easy-accessibility of Chicago's loop course with a start and finish in Grant Park on the lakefront. In this podcast, Pinkowski reflects on: # What he learned in his early years on the job # Some of the best--and most challenging--years of the Chicago Marathon # What runners like best about coming to Chicago and running the urban marathon # Why Chicago has pacers vs other Major Marathons that don't # What he learned from watching Kelvin Kiptum's world-record last year # How he learned about Kiptum's death, and his immediate reactions # And much more You can follow updates from the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Twitter and Instagram. Coach Denise, The Marathon Whisperer, Joins Me For A Coaches Corner Chat On Getting You Prepared For The 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon!Today marks 14 grateful years for Coach Denise's transformation into Denise 2.0. Denise started running in 4th grade because it was the only sport she could do. She has been running ever since and has leveraged running as therapy. Shortly after running her first marathon and wanting to get faster, she was solely focused on PRs and started losing the joy of why she began to run. The accident of getting hit by a car made her reassess her goals and have an entirely new world of appreciation for movement, for running. Denise continues to influence through action and helps others run marathons and chase down crazy goals while running WITH THEM. I'm excited to share her admirable energy and wisdom on another show episode! We chat about our WHY, racing, training for Chicago, and so much more in hopes of inspiring you to chase 26.2! We're here to help you! Denise will be in the last corral in Chicago to support all of YOU first-time marathoners pursuing your first 26.2 starting and finish line. Chicago Event Management (CEM) produces events including The Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Chicago 13.1, and Shamrock Shuffle that exemplify sustainable road racing. CEM strives not only to be environmentally responsible, but also to contribute to their community. They present high-profile, big-budget events, but Chief Operating Officer Michael Nishi and Sustainability Manager Cat Morris share suggestions for how smaller events can also practice sustainability. GotSneakers? makes it socially and financially rewarding to contribute to a circular economy with their FREE sneaker recycling program. As runners, we go through a lot of shoes, but many of them that we consider “done” still have life for others. In the U.S. alone, at least 200 million pairs of shoes and sneakers wind up in landfills each year, where they can take 30-40 years to decompose. Meanwhile, more than 600 million people worldwide don't even own a pair of shoes. When you join the GotSneakers? community, you'll be making a global impact AND you'll earn money for the shoes that you send them. Go here to get started! Örlö is the world's most sustainable algae supplement. Algae is a potent source of EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to life. They help you take care of your brain health, heart health, and immune system, and your body absorbs them three times better than fish oil. They also don't have that fishy aftertaste! Örlö's algae is grown in pristine water in Iceland using only green energy and they employ a carbon-negative production process. 99% less land and water resources are used, so you get 100% of the benefit with 0% of the guilt! You can go here and use code TINA at checkout to save 12%! Tracksmith is an independent running brand inspired by a deep love of the sport. For years the brand has elevated running wear using best-in-class materials and timeless silhouettes that perform at the highest level and can be worn everyday, not just for running. Tracksmith helps the environment by making comfortable, durable clothes that will last for years, rather than winding up in the landfill, but that's not the only contribution they make. They supported Running for Real in creating our RED-S: Realize. Reflect. Recover program. They help athletes who are trying to make the Olympic trials, and they offer scholarships for creatives to work on their crafts. They also have lots of events - Tina will be hosting events with them at the Boston and London marathons. When I started in sports 20 years ago, I never saw female team physicians at the Major League level. If they existed, they kept them hidden behind closed doors. It's part of the reason why I get over the top very excited when I see women team physicians at the Major League level. So you can imagine my joy when I got the opportunity to interview Dr. Julie Bruene. She's a sports medicine physician at RUSH and a team physician for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, Depaul University, and Trinity International University. In this episode of the Game of Her Own podcast, we dive into a lot of mindset challenges that we all face. Dr. B is candid and shares her own experiences and actionable advice. Listen in as we talk about: What she learned about herself and imposter syndrome The untrue story she made up about how her colleagues viewed her When she recognized she was self-sabotaging Why people pleasing can be detrimental to your career How to avoid ruminating on mistakes you make And my favorite….Why you need to surround yourself with people who will call you on your bullshit Connect with Jahaan: Learn more about working with Jahaan and see if it's the right fit for you: https://JahaanBlakeAppointmentScheduling.as.me/LetsTalk Join Jahaan's VIP Email List: https://bit.ly/3yccwAP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jahaanblake/ Email: jblake@jahaanblake.com Website: https://jahaanblake.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jahaanblake/ Links: Make an appointment with Julie: https://www.rushortho.com/doctors/julia-bruene Your Doctor Friends Podcast: https://www.yourdoctorfriendspodcast.com/ Connect with Julie: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/juliabruenemd/ Dr. Julia Bruene is a sports medicine physician with special interests in acute and chronic orthopedic injuries, concussion management, care of female athletes, care of combat athletes/mixed martial arts, and special needs athletes. What a legend! We were SO thrilled to speak the Executive Race Director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Carey Pinkowski! Pinkowski is the founder of Chicago Event Management and has been serving as Chicago's Executive Race Director since 1990. During his tenure, Pinkowski witnessed Chicago's exponential growth, expanding from 6000 registered runners in 1990 to over 45,000 runners from all 50 states and more than 130 countries today. In 2006, Pinkowski, helped launch the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Pinkowski, along with the race directors at the Boston, London, Berlin and New York City marathons (Tokyo was added later). To commemorate his 20th anniversary as Executive Race Director, the City of Chicago and Bank of America bestowed Pinkowski with an honorary street naming – “Carey Pinkowski Drive” – at the intersection of Monroe Street and Columbus Drive, the site of the race's start line. Pinkowski shared his favorite parts of the course, how runners can maximize their Chicago race experience, and many behind-the-scenes fun facts about the race and past participants. If you are running Chicago, or plan to run the race at some point, this is a must-listen!
