You can buy tickets to the Olympics and Paralympics, but then you can also buy "hospitality packages," but what does that really mean? On this episode, we talk with Will Whiston, Executive Vice President of Olympic and Paralympic Games for On Location to demystify "hospitality." It's On Location's first Games as the International Olympic Committee's official sponsor. Will tells us how that partnership came about, and he also explains some of the different hospitality experiences on offer for Paris 2024. We also look ahead to some of the possibilities for Milan-Cortina 2026 and LA 2028. We're almost done with our year-long look back on the Seoul 1988 Olympics and Paralympics, so Alison looks back at the Olympic Closing Ceremonies. In our visit to TKFLASTAN, we have news from: Boccia player Alison Levine Wheelchair rugby player Chuck Aoki Bobbsledder Josh Williamson Skeleton racers Brendan Doyle and Shannon Galea Speed skater Erin Jackson Author Warren Perrin - his GoFundMe is here Paralympian John Register Swimmer Mallory Comerford Wrestler Alex Sancho Nordic combined racer Annika Malacinski Paris 2024 has had another ticket drop -- 400,000 tickets this round, all sports, all sessions (except surfing), and ceremonies in a variety of price ranges. And they have a Christmas card if you're giving them for the holidays! We've also got some travel planning news, particularly around flying in on the day of the Opening Ceremonies (try not to), boating on the Seine ahead of the Opening Ceremonies (won't be possible), and public transport tickets (will be more expensive, but who's surprised?). Plus, another Paris 2024 boutique, Olympic Truce news (guess which country had a little tiff about it?), another installment of the surfingnovela--with Paris 2024 providing a really long explanation about why they want to replace the existing wooden judges stand with an aluminum version--and the announcement of the first torchbearer for the Olympic Torch Relay! The 831: Living Your Best Life Podcast w/ Jungle Jim Hunter

The conclusion to the week long D.A.R.E. series brings us to empowerment and how we can help you empower yourself to live your best lifeJim Hunter grew up in an average home, on an average farm, outside an average town in rural Saskatchewan. He was very good in school and completed grades 3 & 4 in one year and then grades 5 & 6 the following year. Jim was known not only for academics but his athletic and musical abilities as well. He was a leader on his hockey team and loved to sing at community events, in churches, or anywhere he was asked. In the spring of his 10th year a huge change was about to happen in Jim's life.  He was having a great time jumping on his bed, attempting a back flip, when he missed the bed entirely and suffered a severe concussion.  Jim woke up after a long coma but couldn't remember anything. Life was starting all over again and everything had to be relearned. People treated him differently. Some were kind while others treated him as severely handicapped but inside a young Jim felt like he could do anything. The long rehab in the hospital awoke many new thoughts and ideas. He was reintroduced to books in an effort to "catch up" and he worked hard to see what he could accomplish. It was as if he was on a mission. His family was concerned because his enthusiasm was so voracious. They were worried he might hit his head one more time and not make it. He was without fear or limits. Although Jim wanted to live and be accepted, he found much rejection.   Everyone he met thought he was never going to amount to anything but Jim dared to be the best he could be. At the age of eleven, this Saskatchewan prairie boy took up skiing. He later joined the Canadian Men's Alpine Ski Team and developed a highly unorthadox style of training out at the farm. In 1969 he earned the nickname “Jungle Jim” with his aggressive style on the slopes and in 1972 at the Olympic Games in Sapporo Japan "Jungle Jim" won a bronze medal in alpine skiing. This was the first World Championship medal in alpine skiing won by a Canadian male skier. In his passion to learn more, he continually studied and wrote in his journal. Jim noticed there were certain things that every person did to be the best version of themselves. These principles were applicable to life and could be applied universally. Jim retired from the Canadian ski team in March of 1977 but armed with his new insights for success, he went on to compete as a professional on the World Pro Ski Tour.  "Jungle Jim" won the first ever downhill event held on the tour and led his Pro Team for 4 years. He helped a small sporting goods company with marketing strategies taking the company from middle of the pack performance to number one in every category. Inspired by his new-found success, he presented a way to help sport in Canada and give back 10 times what had been invested into his career. He managed the most successful Olympic Torch Relay in history raising millions of dollars for sport and its sponsors in Canada. He worked as a sport broadcaster from 1978 to 1992, published a book, wrote and directed two films and helped CTV win awards in sport broadcasting.  In 1989 Jim embarked on his speaking career and to date has made over 3000 presentations to schools, corporations, and conferences. He's trained athletes in sport and in public speaking, teaching them what to grow and develop in pursuit of their dreams and aspirations.  YOU can let people decide what you are capable of or YOU can determine what you are capable of. Apply Jim's principles and be all you can be. I don’t really know where to start with today’s guest—as he has done and achieved so much in his life. Malcolm Knight served in the Metropolitan Police Force for nearly 30 years, and among his varied roles he served as a uniformed Sergeant, in the Diplomatic Protection Service, and Territorial Support Group to instructor National Public Order Training Centre. He’s been script advisor to the long running TV series The Bill and instructor in Personal Safety to various Airlines. But his true passion is when he is on the water and The Thames is his second home. Not only has Malcolm achieved five world record for middle distance rowing (three on the Thames) he also went on to organize events for others to enjoy. Malcolm is Director of Thames Alive, the catalyst and umbrella organization harnessing and promoting The River Thames. This unique organization that draws together the hundreds of public and private bodies that use the river have put on several historic events, including the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant and the Olympic Torch Relay 2012. Later this year they are organizing a stunning programme called ‘To Be A Pilgrim’ as part of the Mayflower 400 celebrations. Not to be missed. Until recently he was also the Events Manager for The Queens Royal Row Barge ‘Gloriana’ for seven years. And that just scratches the surface, as he also recently appeared on the Channel5 series The Thames, Britain’s Great River with Tony Robinson. Sit back as Malcolm and I chat over the past present and future of the glorious Thames overlooking the glorious Hampton Court. “London’s where it is because back in the day it was the first point in which people could actually get across the river.” 16:00 Malcolm’s love for the Thames was really manifested more or less after his career with the Metropolitan Police Force. He had signed up for one canoe race—which he missed out on, but on a leisurely canoe in 1985 he learned what a “skiffer” was, went to a derelict cottage and boathouse and fell in love with the Victorian style watercraft. He learned how to scull and the rest is history. It’s as simple as that. “In ’99 we put a squad together of 15 of us rotating 3 hours on – 3 hours off—and rowed to Paris in just over 4 days.” 25:30 Malcom went off to set a slew of world records. This started off on what’s called a “Meander” just a simple 3 day row down the Thames, of course—and he realized if they kept their pace they would beat the world record, which they set out and did by 24hrs. He also set one on a 4 day row to Paris, and he still holds the world record for single scull down the Thames—a feat accomplished at the ripe age of 53. Malcolm has put his own personal oars aside on the world record front, but coaches others and is a huge organizer for events on the Thames. This includes being the Ambassador for The Queen’s Row Barge with The Gloriana Trust where he organized and planned all boat movements and rowing crews. He’s organized more as the Director of Thames Alive, coordinating events to celebrate King Henry VIII, the Magna Carta’s 800th birthday, carrying the Olympic flame, and coming this year—the Mayflower 400 event which will take a congratulatory velum scroll down the Thames in a long journey to America. You can follow along with all the Thames events at ThamesAlive.org.uk (http://www.thamesalive.org.uk/events.asp) and take part in watching London take to the river that has fueled our city for centuries, and for generations to come.   Links Malcolm Knight (https://www.linkedin.com/in/malcolm-knight-254b847/?originalSubdomain=uk) Thames Alive (https://twitter.com/thames_alive) Support this podcast

Well here it is folks my annual Christmas special and possibly the last episode of the year and decade to boot.  On this week's show you will get my opinion of the Tiger Woods scandal and my impressions of the Olympic Torch Relay that passed through my region.  You also get a bevy of reviews and seasonal music to boot.  First up is my book review of We'll be Here for the Rest of Our Lives by Paul Shaffer with David Ritz as the Late Show band leader goes over his star-studded career.  Then it is off to a galaxy far, far away Family Guy style as I give my impressions of Something, Something, Something Darkside comes out this week.  I then wrap things up with my game review of the Tales of Monkey Island and a brief history of the successfull game franchise.  Music for this week features the songs Seraphic Panoply by Pimpin with Santa,  Midnight Snow by Abscondo and Snow White Violins by COMEG, all can be found at www.podsafeaudio.com along with the intro song Let's Get Ramblin by Dynamo Snackbar.  Other instrumental music is by the band Mr. Burns (www.mrburnsmusic.com).  As always your comments and suggestions are welcome.
