How hot is it? It's so hot that we've braved the melting sidewalks and watched a plethora of movie and TV offerings just so you can stay cool while you figure out what to watch this summer. First off, of course, we've got the big summer smash "Black Widow" starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh. Bill Bregoli was brave enough to go to his local 14-plex and check it out. Then Neil tells us about "The White Lotus." It's a new HBO limited series about rich people - not to be confused with all the other HBO series about rich people. This one was created by Mike White, who's pretty strange. We've also got the music documentary "Summer of Soul" and the sardonic new Netflix documentary series "How to Become a Tyrant." And speaking of documentaries we've also got "The One and Only Dick Gregory." Bill McCuddy guides us through the strange morass of this year's Emmy Nominations as well what's happening at the Cannes film festival. But wait, we also got a look at "Fear Street Part 1: 1994" and Fear Street Part 2: 1978." So put a nice cold compress on your head and listen in!

So it's Fourth of July weekend and you came back wet from your local fireworks display or you had to move your barbecue indoors because it was too rainy or too hot and now your kids are sadly trying to toast marshmallows over the kitchen stove. Don't worry - we've got a whole bunch of entertainment alternatives to help you salvage what's left of the holiday. First Bill McCuddy has "No Sudden Move" from director Steven Soderbergh. It's a caper film starring Don Cheadle and Benicio Del Toro and it takes place in 1950's Detroit. Then Neil has yet another series about an aspiring stand up comic (where does he find them all?) called "Hacks" starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. The fearless Bill Bregoli tells us about the animated sequel "Boss Baby: Family Business" which has the voices of Alec Baldwin and Jeff Goldblum as well as "F9." No, it's not about your favorite key on your computer - it's yet another "Fast and Furious" movie. And this one goes into outer space! Oh, but there's so much more including "Till Death" which stars Megan Fox as a woman is left handcuffed to her dead husband as part of a sick revenge plot. Plus there's the true crime documentary "Sophie: A Murder in West Cork." So light that sparkler and give us a listen!

The Power of Love and Friendship Finally Neil and I get to podcast in person again with the help of some brand new equipment! So exciting! Things in the show: * We're drinking Bonterra's Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 vintage https://www.bonterra.com/wines/cabernet-sauvignon/ * Muppet Movie clips. One from the original Muppet Movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lniNb9Kygjg and one from The Great Muppet Caper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkZ2tvcPYG0 * Luke Daab “Two of a Kind” a song about Firestorm. We play the whole song at the end for your enjoyment https://daabcreative.tumblr.com/post/44675635239/two-of-a-kind-the-firestorm-song-celebrate-the Then Neil gives us a bit of history of Firestorm and what's cool about him. * Just in case you're still interested we give our Justice League review of the Snyder cut. Neil loved it, I still want a shorter theatrical version of it. Also, spoilers soooo. You've been warned. * This leads into our main discussion about good storytelling and why the Evil Superman stories always seem to be lacking something. When the ultimate power, who is the one who defeats all the evils, becomes himself evil, how do you overcome that kind of evil? Trickery and going back in time to prevent it seems unsatisfying, but the power of love and friendship seems unsatisfying in these situations too. We need a better story here.

This summer has gotten very warm very fast. So this week we gathered during the cool of the evening to tell you about Hollywood's latest offerings on big and small screens. First Bill Bregoli, a man who's not afraid of movies with two female leads, tells us about "Plan B." Directed by Natalie Morales, it follows a straight-laced high school student and her slacker best friend who, after a regrettable first sexual encounter, have 24 hours to hunt down a Plan B pill in America's heartland. It's a comedy! Then Neil tells us about "The Sparks Brothers." It's a documentary about Los Angeles brothers Ron and Russell who, growing up in the 60s, got by on a heavy diet of popcorn matinees and pop music until the spotlight of school talent shows illuminated their way on a musical journey as the Sparks and spawned 25 studio albums. Bill McCuddy fills us in on "The Dry." It stars Eric Bana as a federal agent who returns to his home town after an absence of over twenty years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, Luke, who allegedly killed his wife and child before taking his own life - a victim of the madness that has ravaged this community after more than a decade of drought. Oh, but there's more including Neil's updates on "The Handmaid's Tale" and "The Story of Late Night." And speaking of late night shows, Bill McCuddy tells us about his ill-fated appearance on "The Late Show with Conan O'Brien." It's all worth staying up for so listen in!

Listeners with long memories may remember back in the pre-COVID days, we used to provide an irreverent movie news column for our mid month show. When film production essentially stopped, we decide to mothball news as, to be frank, there wasn’t any, other than movie postponements. It was just too depressing. Now we are back and like the rest of your At The Flicks shows, bigger and bolder than ever. Each month we have set a target to get you the best movie news. Our aim is to try to get you an exclusive on a movie production, as well a humorous piece and something potentially prestigious. This month, for our first stand alone movie news show, I am sure you will agree we have met all of those targets. Writer / director Max Van De Banks tells us about his new film Mudlark which starts production at the end of March. Max talks about the idea, the locations and the casting. In fact, all the info you need to convince you this is a must see short feature. After Max, we let Graham loose to tell us all about what his favourite actor has been up to during lockdown. He certainly has been busy, and Graham gets very excited explaining that to you. Then Neil tells us what Rebel Wilson is about to start filming in the UK. I bet you are thinking zany comedy – you could not be more wrong! Neil reveals all he has found out about this worthy movie. Lastly, Jeff sneaks on to tell us about a soundtrack he has been listening to on hard rotation since Christmas. It is a remarkable piece of work from a composer who is not as well known as he should be. Here it is listeners, our new movie news format. What do you think? Please drop us a line to let us know your views. Your thoughts are, as always, very welcome. Enjoy and stay safe.

It didn't take The Cobblers of Northampton Town long to fall behind against their Stanley counterparts. Just 2 minutes in fact. And from then the game was pretty much done and dusted. Today and next week you will hear parts 1 and 2 of a live therapy session I (David) did with Neil Sattin, host of his own terrific “Relationship Alive” podcast, which has received 5 million downloads. But as you know, we all sometimes need a little mental tune-up, including therapists. The session you are about to hear occurred on March 23, 2020, when the pandemic shut-down first occurred. Rhonda begins today’s podcast with a moving email from a fan who heard Neil's live therapy session with David on Neil’s Relationship Alive podcast. Then Neil explains how his  work on troubled relationships were born out of his work as a dog trainer, and he saw many similarities with relationship issues! In addition to hosting his popular podcast, Nel does coaching for individuals and troubled couples. Neil explains that, “I’ve always been a person who people have turned to for relationship help. I saw the struggles my parents experienced, and I have experienced my own struggles, and I wanted to figure out how we might use struggles to deepen and improve relationships, so people can thrive and get past those challenging moments. Prior to his personal work with David, Neil sought help from a cognitive therapist, but it wasn’t helpful thought. Neil thought it was too formulaic, a sentiment that David agrees with. Neil prefers working “in the moment,” the way David does therapy. Today, you will hear the T = Testing and E = Empathy portions of Neil’s TEAM therapy session with David, and next week you will hear the A = Assessment of Resistance and M = Methods portions. You can check out the Daily Mood Log that David and Neil filled out at the beginning of session. As you can see, the upsetting event was simply feeling like he hadn’t gotten enough done when evening approached. Perhaps you’ve sometimes felt like that, too! You can also see that Neil had many negative feelings. Most were intense and Neil felt overwhelmed. He was telling himself there was way too much to do, that he was incapable of getting organized, and that he was going to end up unhealthy, weak and broke. These were messages he’d heard from his dad when he was growing up: “You’ve gotta clean your room. . . You’ll never succeed.” Tearfully, Neil says, “I’ve always wanted his blessing. . . but I’ve never gotten it. I wish he could see my role in the world, the impact I’ve been making, and I wish he would admire it! . . . I love him dearly, but there are things I just don’t understand, things that have been the sources of my sadness and anger ” Tune in next week for the exciting conclusion of the session! We're bringing you a mega discussion in this week's GYCO podcast! Kicking things off we're discussing the casting news for Matt Reeve's THE BATMAN. With the rumours that Twilight star Robert Pattinson is the front runner we're giving our thoughts on the news. Then we're discussing the finale episode of GAME OF THRONES. The series drew to a close over the last couple of days and we decided to record right after watching the finale. Did we enjoy it? Were we disappointed at the decisions the writers made? Then Neil brings you a review of Marvel Comics fifth issue of DAREDEVIL written by Chip Zdarsky. We're also taking a look at the first trailer for new CW series BATWOMAN starring Ruby Rose, issue #30 of DC Comics Teen Titans series and wrap things up with an in-depth chat on the fourteenth episode of DOOM PATROL season 1! ***CORRECTION - we mention the competition closes on 19th May, it actually closes on 27th May*** ----------------------------------- 00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:35 - The Batman casting news 00:07:07 - Daredevil #5 00:13:45 - Game of Thrones finale 00:33:10 - Batwoman 00:43:55 - Teen Titans #30 00:52:35 - Competition 00:53:53 - Doom Patrol 1x14 "Penultimate Patrol" ----------------------------------- Batwoman trailer courtesy of The CW/Warner Bros. Liam Neeson has a new action film called "Cold Pursuit" but thanks to some controversial comments he's now on the hot seat. We'll take a look on what it means to the sixty-something actor's career. Then Neil and Bill Bregoli discuss the new Rebel Wilson rom-com "Isn't It Romantic" which turns to whole genre on its head. And speaking of romance (and in time for Valentime's Day) we talk about our favorite romance movies. Neil and Bill McCuddy take on the new Netflix series "Russian Doll" and Bill Bregoli tells how he missed the Super Bowl and saw Peter Jackson's new WWI documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old" instead. In this episode, Neil responds to a mother struggling with her son who avoids school work, starts and gives up on positive activities, and alienates friends. Neil helps this Mom set some goals: to help her son learn responsibility, make and keep commitments, cooperate with parents, and develop peer social skills. Then Neil gives Mom a strategy that will set the ball in motion to address them. Step one is changing the relationship pattern in the home. Step two is connecting with the school and 4H, to know her son’s needs and support him. Neil ends by challenging the listener to identify a relationship pattern that they need to change, a pattern that is limiting their potential. Have a question for Neil? Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson on the Military Astrophysics Alliance and Trump's Space Force

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson returns to discuss the mutually beneficial relationship between war-makers and star-gazers. He says the military often serves as a source of creative inspiration for astrophysicists and shares some of the unexpected breakthroughs that emerged from government funded defense projects. Then Neil weighs in on President Trump’s proposed Space Force. He cautions that just because Donald Trump suggested it doesn’t necessarily mean it is bad idea, and in fact, he suggested just such an idea during the George W. Bush Administration. He recommends that a Space Force shouldn’t just protect America and our Space assets from enemies but from asteroids and space junk as well. Neil describes what a full-blown space war might look like, and it’s probably not what you’re imagining. Plus we talk about a crazy scheme to weaponize asteroids, the power of the words “I don’t know,” and Neil suggests that America needs a “Truth Force” in addition to a Space Force. Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson’s book Accessory to War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military is available Tuesday (9/11/18) on Amazon, Audible, or wherever books are sold. For more fun stuff visit www.haydenplanetarium.org/tyson, subscribe to his podcast StarTalk Radio wherever you like to listen, and follow Neil Degrasse Tyson on twitter at @NeilTyson. There's a new "Ghostbusters" in town so Neil Rosen, Bill McCuddy and Bill Bregoli had to call our expert in all things geeky, Jack Rico, to give his take on this new female-centric version. Does it ruin your childhood (as one blogger feared) or just send you to therapy? Then Neil looks at "The Secret Life of Pets" and Jack explains his dog (there's a poodle in there somewhere). Then we look at "Len and Company" and "The Duel" which are available on-demand. It's culture and ecto-plasm all in one podcast!
