In this Onward Podcast episode, Joshua Ebalz talks about how he's survived trauma and is thriving forward. In the past few years, Joshua survived the unthinkable. Both of his brothers and his father passed away. Furthermore, Joshua shares his story and his belief that even through loss, after loss, after loss, after loss; there is still the chance for you to live your life in a healthy, constructive, hopeful way. Also, overcoming adversity has to come from within. It will not come from someone else. Finally, living your life in the NOW requires you to understand your past and the trauma that lives in it and what you hope to accomplish in the future. Happiness will lie in your NOW if you are able to understand your past and not focus incessantly on your future. Barry Magliarditi talks about tapping into the potential of our heart in this Onward Podcast episode. Barry was a self-proclaimed “absolute mess,” but you'd never guess that. Because, to the outside world he was a successful entrepreneur who mentored thousands of business owners and scaled hundreds of businesses to seven figures. But really, every area of Barry's life was circling the drain. Drug use, depression...he felt completely worthless and alone. Until he analyzed the relationship that he had with himself. Entrepreneurs, you're no stranger to the grind that it takes to launch your business. And sometimes, that hustle can turn into living a life that you don't recognize - like it did for Barry. Ultimately, Barry started healing his relationship with himself through self-love and being guided through his intuition. And with each practice, his happiness and success expanded. Consequently, his new Best-Selling Book book Sex, Drugs, and Radical Self-Expression is a must-read for entrepreneurs on how to practice self-care and, by doing so, have a flourishing life and business. And, speaking into topics around spirituality, intimacy, vulnerability and plant-based medicines, the book acts as a gateway and permission slip, supporting others to live their most authentic expression of life regardless of their shortcomings, background or social circles. Finally, listen to this episode and learn about turning adversity into opportunity, vulnerability and its superpower, and tapping into the potential of our heart. "(G)ratitude raises our level of energy and there are things to be grateful for even when everything's falling apart around us...(and) when you focus on helping others too, it kind of gets your mind off of yourself...and better ideas come to you." Emily Harman on Electric Ladies Podcast With the war raging in Ukraine, many of us are very stressed, maybe feeling helpless to stop the suffering, angry, and sad. How can we cope when things feel overwhelming? Listen to Emily Harman, a retired Navy Officer now a coach, who has seen her share of trauma and now coaches people to get through it and hosts a podcast on doing so. Originally recorded to help people coping with great loss in a natural disaster, as those become more common, insights in Emily's conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson are timely to help us cope with watching the war in Ukraine. You'll hear: How taking small steps and being grateful are critical to getting through stress and trauma (and every day). Why being vulnerable and honest about your feelings is critical to healing. How people ask for help who never needed it before - and find new resources. How becoming an activist is healing and can also help you get new ideas. Plus, great career advice.... "As you're trying to get ahead, know what 'get ahead' means for you and why you want to get ahead. And two...know who you're being while you're doing that. This show begins with an essay I wrote sharing my history with yoga—a remarkable transformation has occurred after 36 years (mostly) of practicing. Honestly, as I looked back I was kind of amazed at the power this 2000 year old practice has. I also share the link below to my favorite online yogini, Kashi Ananda. In my interview with Emily Harman, we explored the fascinating world of Positive Intelligence. It's sort of like a positive spin on Emotional Intelligence, and it's the next big thing in the world of behavioral competences. Emily shared a lot she's learned from coaching this: The difference between positive thinking and positive intelligence The different saboteurs in our heads and which ones are hurting us The cost of these inner voices—and what we gain when we harness them Harnessing the saboteurs in the moment What busy women can say to their saboteurs So much great stuff here! I hope you enjoy. Nancy Espuche is a sought-after public speaker, author, and mother who advocates for those living with a loved one's substance use disorder in the workplace. She brings to light the voice of her beloved son Lucas, his strain, struggle and ultimate death. What a great time chatting with Emily. Her story is amazing, and it was interesting when she explained how people would point out the women in the Navy. Different to see them involved and yet it was not that long ago.Her openness about her divorce, and later in life, her role as being there to support her ex as he was leaving this earth is so inspiring. From there to moving from a Naval Officer and Civilian to deciding it was time to do something SHE wanted to do. Not something people were telling her she "SHOULD" do. "people have this image of what retirement looks like in their head, right. And it's like sitting around playing, maybe playing golf, watching TV, just not, you know, doing much. And I knew that that's not what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a coach, I wanted to be a podcast host I wanted to still give back. And so I decided to call it a graduation ""And the onward movement is about releasing the fear of judgment. So that you can create the life of your dreams or a life that you love with confidence. And I think for women, sometimes we don't have that confidence, sometimes we get imposter syndrome. Also, Emily shares her similar journey in this eye-opening and thought-provoking interview. Ultimately, Deborah learned that loving another through their addiction is based in the practice of presence, holding boundaries with belief, and patient love. Episode Highlights: First, Emily introduces Deborah. Then Emily shares that she and Deborah have been through similar, difficult circumstances with their sons. Next, Deborah talks about the importance of addressing mental health issues. People will use substances to subdue their feelings and emotions. Deborah talks about her book High: A Story of Addiction, Awareness and Ascension. She takes the reader through the experience of realizing her son was addicted to heroin and navigating the process. Her son, Andrew is 5.5 years in sobriety. Also, she wrote the book to give hope to the person in the thick of it and to encourage others to see that it's OK to continue to live your life while your loved one is on their own journey. There are different ends to this all too familiar experience and Emily and Deborah are fortunate that their son's are alive. Next, Deborah describes Andrew's family life. It’s a difficult balance - loving the child, setting boundaries, etc. It's difficult to detect substance abuse in teens. Deborah describes all of the challenging event that occurred in the span of one year and how she handled the situation. Who supported Deborah throughout this challenging time in her life? Deborah started to focus on her own personal growth, believing that her son would recover even though she couldn't do it for him. Hot yoga, climbing mountains and her strong faith saved Deborah. It's not selfish to pursue your dreams and bring happiness and joy into your life even if your addict child is not there yet. Your life is a reflection of you. Next Emily asks Deborah her thoughts on how employers can address this issue of substance abuse. It’s important for employers to create an environment where it's safe to talk about mental illness and substance abuse. We need to withhold judgment. And judgment lives in the judger. How did Andrew become sober and what did it take for him to decide to get help? Andrew kept making the next right decision. Next, Deborah talks about the times Andrew relapsed. Emily talks about the importance of parents finding support and how challenging having an addict child is on a marriage. Deborah talks about what Andrew is up to now that he's sober and owns his own business. When Andrew was 9 he told his mom he had a fear that he'd give into temptation. Emily and Deborah talk about there is a piece of them that's aware relapses are possible. Then, Deborah talks about the importance of taking care of yourself, going after your dreams and helping others, when a loved one suffers from addiction. Let them know you have confidence in them and their ability to recover. How does Deborah recommend friends and family support parents with children suffering from addiction. Emily talks about how she pushed forward and didn't feel her feelings and start to do some inner work until 2 years ago. Deborah's sister passed away at age 19. Deborah was 17 at the time and she talks about how that impacted her. Finally, you aren’t alone. AIRWaves Episode #52: In this episode of AIRWaves, we’re discussing mental fitness with Transformational Life and Mindset Coach, and host of The Onward Podcast, Miss Emily Harman.
Self-awareness is the key to resilience according to Onward Podcast guest Dennis Volpe. A retired Naval Officer, Dennis’ leadership experience comes from serving in numerous leadership roles to include Command at Sea. Furthermore, because of his experience with professional success as well as setbacks, he knows what it takes to live a resilient life. Dennis currently serves as a Principal Consultant and Executive Performance and Transition Coach with the Leadership Research Institute. In addition, he’s a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and earned his Master of Science in Leadership Development from the Naval Postgraduate School.Furthermore, Dennis is a Columbia University certified Executive Coach. Episode Highlights: First, Dennis explains that change is what happens to us - personally or professionally. And it is external. Next he talks about self-awareness. Emily asks Dennis how we can know if we need to be more aware. Dennis says that lack of self-awareness is biggest barrier to personal and professional success. Dennis is certified in emotional Intelligence. Also, he works with a coach himself. It's easier to notice issues in other people and harder to see them in ourselves. Coaching works because a coach can be objective and see what we don't see. Next, Emily describes the first time she worked with a coach. Then, Dennis explains how he knows what success and failure feel like. Dennis explains that when he was the Commander of a guided missile frigate, the ship ran aground and broke the propellor during a very high profile mission. As Commanding Officer, Dennis was responsible and accountable for the incident. Dennis explains Navy regulations about the responsibility and accountability of Commanding Officers in the Navy. Dennis was relieved of Command and his career basically ended after a lengthy Uniform Code of Military Justice process. In his mind, Dennis felt everyone he knew thought he was a failure. Dennis published a LinkedIn video about losing command and realized that most people he knew weren't even aware of the incident. Next, Dennis explains how he became a coach. He invested in his personal and professional development by going through the Columbia University’s Coaching Program. Emily and Dennis learned push energy when they worked for the military. Dennis had to get comfortable getting uncomfortable and he wrote a song about resilience. How does Dennis define coaching success? Dennis’ focus is on career or life transition coaching. Next, Emily asks Dennis about his coaching observations over the past few years. When you transition from military, you get to pick your team for first time in life. Therefore, it’s important to know your values, priorities, and expectations. Knowing your purpose is part of the resilience equation because it gives us grit and endurance when we need it. Also, know your strengths and what energizes you. Setting boundaries - red lines - is important. Next, Emily gives an example of how she failed to set a red line boundary recently. Also, surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable to what you say is important to you. Ask for help and put your ego in the back seat. Passion gives us energy but also some stray voltage. So, take your passion and put it in a box of purpose. Give yourself time and space to reflect. “No” is a complete sentence. Remember this when setting boundaries so you can stick to your priorities. Write your priorities down and share them with people who will give you support and accountability. Next, Dennis describes his ideal client. Finally, Dennis talks about his book, Transition on Purpose, a personal story illustrating success, failure, and resilience. Onward Podcast guest Patty Bear grew up among the Plain People (Amish and Mennonites) of Pennsylvania. Furthermore, she was expected to follow in her ancestor's footsteps and become a Reformed Mennonite. Instead her world was upended at young age by an excommunication and shunning that made national news. Consequently, this trauma catapulted her out of an insular world where women were commanded to obey their husbands, where television, wearing jewelry, voting, or serving in the military were all forbidden. Yet she followed the call of her wild soul which led her led her to apply to the U.S. Air Force Academy and later become an airline pilot. Patty spent decades dedicated to the study of defying gravity: escaping conditioning, walking the transformational journey, and the practice of following the call of the wild soul. Her second book entitled Plain to Plane My Mennonite Childhood, a National Scandal and an Unconventional Soar to Freedom is set to publish in Feb 2021 In this interview, host Emily Harman and her guest, Patty, talk about the journeys that transformed their lives. Every transformational journey in life is about something within you blooming. It’s about you becoming more of who you really are. The Hero's Journey travels through four distinct stages that represent a quest. And Patty shares these stages in this interview. Finally, your transformational journey always benefits someone else, even though you may never be aware of your impact. Episode Highlights: Emily and Patty talk about their time at a service academy. Patty graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1986 and Emily graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1985. Then Patty shares her story and how she ended up attending the U.S. Air Force Academy. Patty grew up with the Plain People (Amish and Mennonites) of Pennsylvania. Her father was excommunicated and shunned. Consequently, he turned on his family and took his story to the press. Patty explains "shunning" - an organized form of ostracism. Her father wrongly promoted a story that his family was shunning him. Patty started seeing the world differently Next, Patty shares a story of her mother making little bread loaves to sell at the farmers market. At that point, Patty decided she would be financially independent and set a new goal for herself. Cross Country track brought Patty into a new environment and exposed her to new possibilities. Also, she decided she would attend college although this was completely against her culture. Her brother advised Patty to take hard math and science classes. And, when Patty was in 10th grade her brother talked her into taking flying lessons. When she was a junior in high school, she realized she didn't have the talent to get an athletic scholarship. She had no money for college and didn't know what she was going to do. Then she met with a Cadet from the Air Force Academy and that decision changed her life. What did Patty's mom say when she told her she was thinking about attending the Air Force Academy? Emily and Patty talk about their decision to attend a Service Academy and the impact it had on their mothers. Next Patty shares that she became a pilot upon graduating from the Air Force Academy. Patty couldn't fly combat aircraft but she did fly in the combat zone during the first Gulf War. Then, Patty became an airline pilot for United once she left the Air Force. She took an early retirement due to COVID. Next, Patty talks why she wrote her about her upcoming book. She wanted to explain how one can follow a transformational path despite challenges and seemingly hopelessness. Also, when everything is destroyed something comes out of it. Next Patty talks about the turning points and synchronicities in her life and how she moved forward and trusted that doors would open. Emily and Patty talk about the importance of taking advantage of opportunities and creating opportunities for more to happen in your life. Emily asks Patty about when to listen to your inner critic. Emily explains a time when she was faced with a tough decision - job she didn't want because it required leaving her comfort zone. By taking this job, Emily didn’t listen to her inner critic. Next Emily and Patty discuss the difference between a coach and counselor and why it’s important to have a coach along transformational journey. After that, Patty explains how working with her coach was life changing. Also, for a long time Patty thought someone else needed to change. However, eventually she took responsibility for her life. Her coach was exceptionally kind and helped her out of that dark place. Then Emily talks about how retirement courses never helped her with figuring out who she really was. After that Patty says so often coaching separates the personal from the professional and they cant be separated. Emily describes what living an authentic life means to her. Patty explains the moment she decided she needed a coach. Also, Patty’s book is an illustration of what her transformational journey has been like. Patty shares why it's important to tell her story. Next Patty describes the Hero's Journey and the metamorphosis we go through many times in life. Also, she explains what to expect at each stage. We have to own our story and the roles we play in our lives. And when we accept responsibility - that's a key to transformation. We reclaim our sense of power. Emily and Patty talk about "tests" they've encountered along their hero’s journey Then Patty and Emily talk about their life's purpose - their Dharma - and how they're walking their path. Next they talk about how they started paying attention to their intuition and inner wisdom. Patty's friend told her guidance always comes in advance of need and she gives an example. Ask yourself “What is change asking of me?” Finally, your transformational journey always benefits someone else, even though you may never be aware of your impact. Furthermore, after living on a religious commune 30 years ago, Annie knows that style can be a powerful vehicle for personal expression. Consequently, Annie relates first hand to women who dress to keep themselves invisible out of fear of displeasing others. Moreover, in 2013, an incurable cancer diagnosis woke Annie up to face the pain of her old story. Using a process she calls, “The Adventure Principle," she completely reinvented herself from the outside in -- starting with her wardrobe. Finally, listen and learn how wearing the right clothes will change your life! We are all true heroes not made to be or look like everyone else. We’re made to shine! Episode Highlights: First, Emily starts off by remarking that she probably isn't appropriately dressed for the interview. Annie says this is a good lead in for a discussion on how we need to change our mindset about clothes. Today's women are writing books, speaking on stages, mentoring others and changing the world. Yet they are still dressing ourselves according to an old paradigm: We’re dressing to fit in (can't stand out) Also dressing to hide negative body parts And dressing according to an ever changing, impossible beauty standard passed down from the fashion industry. Furthermore, this has undermined their self confidence, leading to all kinds of imbalances: 1) Eating disorders 2) Body dysmorphia 2) Spending billions of dollars on clothing, procedures, etc. just to fit the standard Also, countless women stand in front of their closets, afraid to make a choice about what to wear to work. And afraid that someone will deem their outfit to be inappropriate. Furthermore, few people have taught women is how to feel powerful in their own skin -- every time they get dressed. Moreover, Annie teaches women how to find their Super Hero cape. And she teaches how to make Power Outfits so that women feel like they can literally take on the world every time they get dressed. We started this new thing where we get you, our awesome audience, to participate in our weekly podcasts by asking you to send your answers to our questions. Last week, we asked how COVID-19 has been impacting your podcast, and everyone really showed up with your answers! This week, we asked you to answer this: What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started your podcast? Here's how our listeners answered this week's question: James Sabata of The Necronomi.com podcast wishes he had known that practice makes perfect. Your first episode isn't going to be your magnum opus, and that's okay! Every episode will teach you something new and help you to build a better show. In the beginning, James was really neurotic about making it perfect, and that took a lot of the fun out of it. James wishes he had known it would get better so he could just have enjoyed the process. When you enjoy creating your show, everyone else will enjoy listening to it. For Kitty Felde of The Fina Mendoza Mysteries podcast, its knowledge of the LAX takeoff schedule that she wishes she had had. Kitty never thought much about the airport takeoff schedule before starting The Fina Mendoza Mysteries, but once she was outside with a microphone, every single plane made itself known. Next time, Kitty says she would call LAX to make sure she doesn't waste precious recording time waiting for planes to land. Emily Harman from Onward Podcast wishes she had known that every podcaster feels a little scared and insecure. The key to success is just doing it despite the fear. Hannah from The Psykhe Podcast wishes she had known how much fun connecting with people all around the world would be when she first got started podcasting. If she had known, she might have been less reluctant to start her podcast in the first place, and more excited to begin making the connections to her future audience and fellow podcasters. For Phillip Wilkerson of the Positive Philter podcast, planning ahead would have made his podcast journey a whole lot easier. In the beginning, Phillip planned episodes one at a time but wishes he had known to plan at least 10 episodes in advance to avoid getting caught up in the stress of life. Scheduling helps Phillip stay on top of editing and avoid feeling rushed to get an episode out. Scott Wyden Kivowitz from The WordPress Photography Podcast wishes he had known about Headliner from the very beginning! Headliner has saved Scott a ton of time, and he no longer has to fiddle around with Final Cut Pro. Kolby Castilloof Sports as a Job wishes he had known just how rewarding podcasting would be. If Colby had known what kind of influence he could have, he would never have hesitated and jumped into podcasting right away. If you ask Matt Pollard of Holding The High Line with Rabbi and Red what he wishes he had known before he got started podcasting, he'll say: Sound quality and post-recording editing are super important. Matt spent several years self-teaching himself the necessary editing skills to make his audio sound good. Matt wishes he had learned some more of the ins and outs of audio before he got started and recommends you learn from this and take some time to get editing skills early on. Juan Kingsbury from Career Blindspot reminds us that sometimes even the basics are complex by wishing that he had known exactly what kind of podcast he actually wanted to created. As a big fan of podcasts, Juan had tons of inspiration but had a hard time picking one lane. His advice: pick a setup you are likely to use again and again. Janyl Jusupjan of Chaï Latte & Salt, Untold Stories of Central Asia wishes she had known how difficult it would be to create a podcast in English as a non-native English speaker.
