In this week's episode of Sober Stories from Everyday People I am talking with Donna in Thirroul, New South Wales, Australia. At the time of recording, Donna is 4 years, 3 months and 10 days sober. Donna is originally from Melbourne and has been married for 25 years. Donna discusses having a relatively normal farm up bringing with relatively normal drinking habits until she sadly lost her mother and first husband. During and after that period of her life, she went slightly off the rails and got into using more alcohol. Donna was a self confessed party girl who began enjoying wine at home during the early naughties and onwards. Donna realised she was getting tired al the time and struggling with insomnia. Donna decided to quit and hasn't looked back since. You can follow Donna online on instagram at @doona67. Enjoy the episode!

Football United vs Soccer City

Welcome to episode 73 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. Firstly I would like to sincerely thank all of the interviewees, listeners and the football community of the Illawarra, Australia and elsewhere around the World who download this podcast. Additionally I would like to say thank you to the tremendous people who contribute, comment and reminisce on the social media pages.Billy Williams is our interviewee in episode 73. Born in Thirroul and growing up in Woonona in the 1930s, Billy was a footballer who represented his club, region, state and country as a junior and senior footballer. This interview was conducted a while ago via Billy's son Greg who I must sincerely thank for setting this interview up. This interview with Billy is fantastic in many ways and as Billy was humble about his success on the football field, I have added further details about his junior and senior football exploits from newspaper articles and other documents to demonstrate the career Billy Williams had in the Illawarra and for his region, state and country. In my humble opinion Billy would be “one of the” top ten Illawarra football players in the 1950s, so to get a few of his memories and thoughts was fantastic. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to record and listen to some of Billy's football experiences. I have immense appreciation and thanks for the time Billy gave up in recording this interview and further thanks must go to Andrew Howe, Greg Stock, Mark Boric and Doug Butcher for the statistics I have used in this podcast. At the end of my interview with Billy Williams there is an additional interview with Peter Glass and his thoughts on Billy as a player. For those who have not listened to previous podcasts, Peter Glass was our interviewee on episode 62 and I thank Peter for doing this additional interview. Please enjoy episode 73!

Murray Olds: Sydney hits its annual average rainfall – almost nine months early

If you thought yesterday's rainfall in Sydney was heavy, welcome to Thursday.By 9am, the city had reached its average total of rainfall for an entire year - a whole nine months ahead of schedule.More than 1214mm of rain has already fallen on the city, with even more set to come. Major Flood warnings Nepean and Georges rivers. Torrential rain and flash flooding today ##Sydney and #Illawarra. Sydney has now passed it's annual average rain with >1214mm. LIVE coverage all day on Sky News Weather. #SydneyStorm #NSWFloods @SkyNewsAust @SkyWeatherAUS pic.twitter.com/G3S6brqeuK— Thomas Saunders (@TomSaundersSNW) April 6, 2022 The inclement weather has led to warnings that major suburbs in the city's west, including Liverpool, could flood later in the day as swollen rivers burst their banks. Already, train services have been disrupted near Sydney. And it's not just Sydney – a vast swath of New South Wales is seeing large falls as far inland as Dubbo and Orange, as well as along much of the coast."The rain event has really only just begun," Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe said."There's still a fair way to go with this event with a lot of rainfall charging into [Australia's east]."'Serious concern'The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall for the entire NSW coast between Newcastle and Bega, near the Victorian border, for Thursday. At least 100mm is possible in Sydney, the Blue Mountains and down the south coast over the next few days."But there's potential for totals of up to around 300mm. So that's why flash flooding is a serious concern," Sharpe said. The torrential conditions are due to a combination of factors. The La Nina climate driver continues to push warm moist air towards the continent. At the same time, cooler than usual air is high in the atmosphere and that's causing the warmer moisture to rise and then form clouds and rain – lots of it."That's our rainmaking event that is moving through the upper system and that's driving the whole thing," he said.Grim rain record could be beaten todayOn Wednesday, Sydney Airport record 111mm of rain, more than 15mm above its entire average monthly rainfall for April in a single day.Lucas Heights, in the city's south, topped out at 84mm while the CBD weather station, next to the Harbour Bridge, recorded 86mm.So far in 2022, Sydney's CBD has seen at least 1112mm of rain. The average annual rainfall in Sydney is 1164mm.That means if just another 52mm falls on Thursday – and double that is possible – the city will have equalled its usual rainfall for the entire year in just three months and one week. ⚠️ Minor to Major #Flood Warning issued for #Nepean and #Hawkesbury Rivers. #Menangle minor expected at 6:00 am, may reach major Thursday evening. Moderate for #Camden #Wallacia. It's likely the big wet will subside over the coming days – at least for now. It's much the same story throughout other parts of Sydney, with Penrith in the west also set to see 60-100mm and then between 20-30mm on Friday and spells of less heavy rain through the weekend.Minor to moderate flooding is possible on the Nepean, Hawkesbury, Colo, Georges and Woronora rivers in and around Sydney with flooding very possible in riverside suburbs such as Liverpool, Milperra and Menangle. At 6am on Thursday, buses were replacing trains between Thirroul and Waterfall on the NSW Train Link South Coast line due heavy rain at Helensburgh.Much of NSW set to be smashedWollongong could see 70-120mm on Thursday and up to 45mm on Friday; 60mm could find its way down to Bega; up to 170mm could fall on Katoomba over the next couple of...

Saul Griffith is a mad inventor, an official “genius” (as per the prestigious Macarthur Fellowship, um, wait for it, for his prodigy of service in the world community) and he has a fix for the climate crisis! Electrify everything! US President Joe Biden vibed with it so much he made the Australian his climate advisor.  I first came across Saul on one of my eternal searches for legit climate solutions that bring true excitement and hope to humans.  For years I've wanted to pick apart his wild idea summed up in his new book, written for President Joe Biden, Electrify: An Optimist's Playbook For Our Clean Energy Future. The gist is this: We can get to those 2030 targets required for our survival on this planet, using technology that already exists and if he had to choose a country in the world where it can happen the fastest and with the biggest economic win he'd say, Australia! Saul is a lot of fun, swears a touch (be warned!), rides a bike everywhere, barely wears shoes and rather infamously (according to the interwebs) pointed out the carbon footprint of his underpants in his 2006 TED talk. The Electrify the lot and fast mantra is one I buy into…to a point. We still must consume less…way less. Saul agrees. We are going to talk further... This week we spoke to art curator and writer extraordinaire,  Amber Creswell Bell. We were thrilled Amber drove all the way to Avalon from Thirroul to speak to us (she did visit the new gallery she is curating at Studio Direct Michael Reid Newport too!). We had the best chat about curating, writing books, fitting it all in with kids, choosing artists, advice on buying art, being an enthusiastic creative hustler and much more. Her first book, Clay, published by Thames & Hudson, released October 2016, showcases over 50 contemporary ceramic artisans from Australia and abroad.Amber's second book, A Painted Landscape, released in October 2018, profiles the diverse work of 50 of Australia's landscape painters.2021 will see the release of Amber's monograph on artist Ken Done, and ‘Still Life' – a compilation of Australian still-life painters, also published by Thames & Hudson. Her editorial work has been published in many of Australia's leading titles.Check out her website here. Thanks, Amber, really enjoyed meeting you and thanks for sharing the knowledge!
