Additive manufacturing has a special place in the space beyond our own planet. It has emerged as a clear enabling technology for an entirely new generation of commercial companies targeting orbit, deep space, the Moon, and Mars. That's why I could not be any happier to welcome today's guest, Tim Berry, Head of Manufacturing at Launcher. Launcher is one of the clearest examples of the amazing results that a space startup can achieve by using AM to bring its innovative ideas to life. Tim is bringing his extensive experience as the former Head of AM at SpaceX, a company that in many ways showed the world that commercial space was possible and did so by heavily implementing AM for engine development and manufacturing early on. Tim'sexperience merges rapid, low-cost aerospace production with innovative, high-volume metal 3D printing, launch vehicle production, and crew-rated spacecraft integration during his 8+ year career at SpaceX. His CV speaks for itself From 2013 to 2019, as Falcon 9 Stage 2 Lead, he led a multidisciplinary team performing a wide array of production processes, from structures to final integration, to manufacture 90 upper stages that supported Falcon 9 missions, while significantly improving quality and exit rate. From 2019 to 2021, as Dragon 2 Crew and Cargo Integration Supervisor, he managed a large team of leads, engineers, and technicians responsible for building the integration system that produced eight Dragon Crew and Cargo spacecraft during his tenure. Finally, as the Manager of Additive Manufacturing, he oversaw all Production and Development Additive Manufacturing including Applications, Processes, and Operations Engineering as well as Technician and Scheduling teams. Here he managed a massive fleet of printers spanning 4 platforms producing hardware for all SpaceX programs and forming one of the highest volume AM labs in the world. Now Tim is starting a new era at Launcher, for himself, as the Head of Manufacturing, and for the company, which is among the most successful already in the next generation of AM-driven space startups. Today we get to ask him what comes next.

I would like to formally invite you to a class I'm going to give on advanced strategies for 401k plans. I'm not much of a hype man so I'm going to keep this really simple. The one constant I see with 401k clients is they haven't fully realized how incredibly powerful their 401ks really are. Just stop and think about it. These accounts can be completely tax free and yet protected from the claims of creditors at the same time. To that end I've created a relatively simple course to open your eyes to all the crazy things with your 401k plan. The concepts I'm going to teach include: How to loan your plan an unlimited amount of personal funds with no interest How to move your crypto, options, promissory note, or growth stock, into your 401k plan. How to pass your plan on to your heirs without tax consequences How to use today's interest rates to lower taxes on distributions and conversions by 40% or more How to move hundreds of thousands of profits from your business into your Roth, completely tax free. I promise you that you aren't going to be disappointed, anytime during the first day you can ask for all your money back if you aren't blown away with the info. I've offered this class a number of times in the past and no one has ever taken me up on the money back guarantee. Also we are going to make this a bit fun this year. The class is going to be in Mexico, at the Hard Rock Hotel in Puerto Vallarta. The hotel is all inclusive and is included in the registration fee for the class. Why You Absolutely Need A Lean Business Plan – Tim Berry

Today I do a fair bit of writing, speaking, or blogging but I’m also still the chairman of the company I founded. I have a great management team that runs the day-to-day operations of the business which allows me to focus on the parts of the business I enjoy. When I launched Palo Alto Software, many years ago, it was originally a consulting business that provided business planning services for local computer dealers. In the old days, business plans were more elaborate and rarely changed once they were created. Fast-forward to today and most successful businesses use a lean business plan that is reviewed and revised continuously. The misconception about business plans is that they aren’t useful in guiding your business today, which would be true if you created your business plan based on the decades-old model. However, the lean business plan I mentioned is something you can use daily to help run your business better. The key attributes to a lean business plan include a list of assumptions, a handful of major milestones, key metrics, and a few bullet points that outline your strategy and tactics. As entrepreneurs, we often get distracted by new ideas or solving a customer's problems. However, what I’ve learned is there is a principle of displacement at work here, solving for one problem rules out your ability to solve for another. That is where the business plan helps to keep you on track to solve the problems that align with your strategy. A great business plan is like exercise, it’s the workouts that get you the results, not the plan itself. Will your business be doomed to fail if you don’t have a business plan? No, you can find some level of success without a plan. However, every business will benefit and grow even more when they have a lean business plan that they use to help run their business. The business planning software we created is a web app that anyone can use and it's only $19.95 a month or less if you pay annually. So it doesn’t require a large investment to have a lean business plan but it will help you run your business better.  Resources Shared: Palo Alto Software Lean Business Planning by Tim Berry Bplans

On thought of the podcast, which is not transcribed here, Shaun gets a bit mad at political things. If you’re not into that, you might want to skip to the eight-minute mark. Okay, first things first. What is a writing platform? An author’s platform is basically just the author’s presence on the web. Your website. Your TikTok, your Facebook, your Twitter, your Instagram, your podcast, your blog. Unlike Coke or Spanx, your platform isn’t faceless. It’s all about you, the writer. As the foundation of your brand, you have to figure out what it is that you want to do and achieve. Most writers want to tell stories. That’s their goal. So as an author your platform is going to be about how to tell your stories and how you tell your story, especially the story of you, the writer. I’ve failed at this a lot because I’ve historically not been into talking about writing. I prefer to just write, but that put me in a weird little vacuum, a void. A lot of writers worrying about their platform get started with a mission statement. WHAT IS A MISSION STATEMENT. According to Tim Berry (link on the podcast notes), “A mission statement is a simple statement that explains your company’s goals. It’s a summary of what your company does for its customers, employees, and owners. It explains how you do what you do. And, it focuses on why your company does what it does. Some of the best mission statements also extend themselves to include fourth and fifth dimensions: what the company does for its community, and for the world.” And Blake Stockton wrote: “A mission statement is a short, meaningful sentence (or several sentences) that summarizes the purpose that drives your business. A good mission statement says why you do what you do.” It’s kind of a weird existential thing on some level because you’re basically asking WHO AM I and WHY DO I EXIST? There are also people who absolutely believe that a mission statement should be one short sentence without a lot of fluff. Once you have a mission statement, you think about how you can push your presence out there and what you actually want to do, Berry’s fourth and fifth steps. Those steps are over on the blog. And more that won't fit here. SHOUT OUT! The music we’ve clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. Guest, Tim Berry preaches from Jeremiah Jeremiah 17:5-18   Sermon Bible Passage This is what the Lord says: ‘Cursed is the one who trusts in man,     who draws strength from mere flesh     and whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;     they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert,     in a salt land where no one lives. ‘But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,     whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water     that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes;     its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought     and never fails to bear fruit.’ The heart is deceitful above all things     and beyond cure.     Who can understand it? ‘I the Lord search the heart     and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct,     according to what their deeds deserve.’ Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay     are those who gain riches by unjust means. When their lives are half gone, their riches will desert them,     and in the end they will prove to be fools. A glorious throne, exalted from the beginning,     is the place of our sanctuary. Lord, you are the hope of Israel;     all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust     because they have forsaken the Lord,     the spring of living water. Heal me, Lord, and I shall be healed;     save me and I shall be saved,     for you are the one I praise. They keep saying to me,     ‘Where is the word of the Lord?     Let it now be fulfilled!’ I have not run away from being your shepherd;     you know I have not desired the day of despair.     What passes my lips is open before you. Do not be a terror to me;     you are my refuge in the day of disaster. Let my persecutors be put to shame,     but keep me from shame; let them be terrified,     but keep me from terror. Bring on them the day of disaster;     destroy them with double destruction. Jeremiah 17:5-18 NIV

Do you ever feel like you can see exactly what is wrong with the world and with those who lead it? In this time of crisis, as many herald the end of Western culture and civilization as we know it, how should we respond? Closer to home, the things that are broken in our communities, families, spouses, and children are easily perceived. Most of us respond in one of two basic ways: apathy or activism. Neither is necessarily wrong, but the apostle Paul shows a much more powerful way to respond to the crisis of our time - this Sunday at Mendham Hills.

Few words in the Bible have provoked as much anger and debate as these: an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. The Lex Talionis. The Law of Retribution. Atheists claim it proves the Bible contains internal contradictions. Gandhi said it would leave the whole world blind. For the Pharisees, it was a loophole allowing them to serve up cold-hearted revenge. Jesus acknowledges that many have weighed in on these much-debated words. And once again, as his sermon crescendos, he repeats, "but I say to you," this Sunday at Mendham Hills.

Want to flip real estate in your IRA or 401(k)? Think you won’t owe taxes on your profits? You’ve made a very common error… but so did I in a solution I devised to that problem. Maybe my error will keep you from making any of your own, and I’ll tell you about it right now. I’m Bryan Ellis. This is Episode #319 of Self-Directed Investor Talk.----Hello, Self-Directed Investors, all across the fruited plane. Welcome to Episode #319 of Self-Directed Investor Talk, the SHOW OF RECORD for savvy self-directed investors like you, where each day, I help you to find, understand and profit from exceptional alternative investing strategies and opportunities!I have a great show headed your way right now. If you’d like to get the transcript or links to the resources I share with you today, just send text the word ep319 with no spaces to 833-212-2112. Again, to get a link to the transcript and resource links for this episode, #319, just text the word ep319 with no spaces to 833-212-2112 and we’ll get it right out to you.Well, I’ll admit it, folks… the brilliant idea I had yesterday isn’t going to pan out. Still, there’s a very helpful lesson in it that you’ll want to know, particularly if you like the idea of flipping real estate in your IRA or 401(k), and I’ll tell you all about it right after this…So here’s the idea: In the last couple of episodes I’ve shared with you 5 reasons that I’ve reconsidered my formerly 100% negative stance against oil and gas investing. It’s not that I never believed it could work, just that I had a misunderstanding of how risk can be mitigated, so the risk was all I saw. I’m definitely infinitely more open to that asset class now, and one of the big advantages created by many oil & gas investments – which is HUGE tax deductibility – sparked an idea in my mind:The idea was this: There are a lot of people who like to flip real estate in their IRA or 401(k). Unfortunately, most of those people seem to not be aware of the fact that most such transactions are technically “earned” income rather than “unearned” income, and as such, the IRA or 401(k) will have to pay income taxes on any profits realized from flips. So here was my thought: If a person does a flip deal that generates a lot of profit, why not just – assuming you have the available capital to do so – just mitigate those taxes by doing a separate oil & gas investment? That would generate a tax deduction which would otherwise be totally irrelevant for a retirement account since oil & gas probably IS unearned income, and therefore shielded from taxes by the IRA or 401(k), so you could take the tax deduction generated by the oil & gas deal and apply it to the income generated on your flip deal and VOILA, problem solved.Right?Well… Yes… until recently, that is. During the end of yesterday’s show when I described this idea, I kept hearing a voice in my mind saying… check it out, check it out! It was as if this idea absolutely SHOULD work, but for some reason, it won’t… I just couldn’t remember why.Well, I did what I always do when I have a question of this nature… I reached out to the Great One, attorney Tim Berry, for clarification. And he filled in the blanks for me. Apparently, before the recent Trump tax cut, it WAS possible for deductions generated by one investment to offset the profits generated by another investment in an IRA or 401(k). But apparently, that went away with the new tax law. That’s unfortunate. That tax bill has been so very good on such a broad basis and so clearly very good for our economy… but the fact is that there are still some somewhat crappy parts to it, and this is one of them. So… this idea won’t pan out. Not all of them do. That’s ok. Let’s keep thinking creatively together, shall we?My friends, invest wisely today and live well forever. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

...but money talks and actions speak louder than words. So, as good cynics, when someone tells us they'll do something, we wait to see if they follow through. And, we love to lay the blame for this particular transgression at the feet of lawyers and politicians. But the truth is that the human race as a whole has a tenuous relationship with the truth. Jesus has a new challenge: Say what you mean and mean what you say - this Sunday at Mendham Hills.

In this episode of the High Return Real Estate Show Jeff Schechter, Jack Gibson, and special guest Tim Berry discuss the checkbook IRA and how to multiply the returns of your retirement account. Questions Asked: How did you get into this line of work? What is a self-directed IRA? How can someone convert their existing accounts into a self-directed IRA? What is the primary difference between a 401(k) and an IRA? What are the rules around self-directed accounts? How does someone get started in setting up this plan? Key Lessons Learned: Self Directed Retirement Accounts Most people get their investment knowledge from financial advisors that are more focused on making money than giving the best advice. A checkbook IRA is simply giving you the control of what is within the IRA. 97% of all money in retirement accounts is in other areas other than real estate. Chances are if there is something you want to invest in a Checkbook IRA can do it. The only thing it can't do is buy life insurance. If you've left a previous employer where you had a 401(k) there is a good chance you can roll the account over to a self-directed IRA. It may be trickier if you still work for that employer but the older you are the better your chances. If your self employed you will have no problem. You have to find a trustworthy self-directed IRA custodian and transfer the assets from the old account to the new account. With a self-directed 401(k) you are already your own custodian. The stock market is a fool's game. Real estate is a great, stable investment. You may run into issues at tax time trying to find a CPA that will do your taxes but if you have an IRA, your custodian will take care of it. It's very simple to get started in setting up either plan. There is a 250k benchmark of value before you have to really start doing some paperwork for this kind of investment account. An Excel spreadsheet may be the only tracking you need for your investment account. Regulations You can't invest in life insurance and collectibles. You can't engage in a prohibited transaction which means engaging in an investment with anyone related to you. Certain transactions will generate taxable income which you have to account for. If you flip real estate within the retirement account, you can use the depreciation to offset the potential tax implications. Self Directed 401(k) vs IRA A self-directed 401(k) is the best route to go. A self-directed IRA requires a third-party custodian, a 401(k) does not. Inside an IRA, you will have to pay taxes on leveraged real estate deals. With a 401(k), you won't. You can borrow money from a 401(k) without paying taxes on the borrowed money which isn't the case with an IRA. The only restriction to a self-directed 401(k) is that you can only establish one if you have an active business or stream of self-employed income. The penalties for a 401(k) are typically lower than an IRA. Resources Mentioned iraideas.com/hrre Thank you for listening!
