In the 1970s, Roch Theriault convinced a small group of people to abandon their lives and possessions and go with him to an isolated community in rural Quebec. After attaining absolute control over his followers, Theriault dictated every part of the Ant Hill Kids' existence, including their clothing, diet, thoughts, communication… and probably most disturbingly, their medical treatments... Which were administered by Teareo himself… The cruelness of Roch's teachings extended even to the children of the cult. They suffered beatings, starvation, and relentless labor, while adults took the brunt of - but not ALL of - his sexual abuses. *****CONTENT WARNING*****In 1984, the beautiful, tranquil area of Burnt River in Ontario, Canada, attracted the attention of the free-spirited, organic-food-growing faith community called the Ant Hill Kids. Along an isolated road on August 16th, 1989, it was here that a member of that faith community hitch-hiked her way to a hospital, protecting the stump that used to be her right arm. A former nurse herself, Gabrielle Lavallee knew only too well the horrors that could befall an untreated amputation. But any horror that could result from rampant infection was mild compared to the horror she'd already endured.Gabrielle, determined to leave the "utopian" community behind, eventually spilled her story to the police. Gabrielle had existed in conditions far from utopian. She had been living in an absolute sadistic hellscape, controlled and manipulated by the Ant Hill Kids leader, a Quebec man named Roch Theriault. "As we got out of the car, we all froze. In the light, we saw very tiny handprints, like that of a six-year-old, all over our car."TW! TW! TW! Examples of suicide, sexual abuse, and murder are present in both of Dan's stories. The first is a shorter tale that Dan promised to share here after a recent episode of the Timesuck Podcast when he talked about the 1980 New Mexico Prison Riot. The now closed prison has been supposedly haunted ever since that riot, and today we explore those claims. His big second story is the tale of Maurice Theriault. A name that probably rings familiar to a lot of horror film fans. Infamous demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren of the Conjuring universe were part of an exorcism on Maurice in May of 1985.
