When your time comes (I know we don't like to think about that), what kind of person will you be? Right now, you're laying the foundation for who you'll be in your old age. Some people age gracefully, full of joy and happiness despite their growing infirmities. For others, old age only brings sorrow and anger. You might not realize it, but the decisions you make today will shape the kind of person you'll be, not just tomorrow, but years from now. So, who will you be by the end of your life? What kind of person will getting old make you? In his prologue to the epilogue of his book, Solomon wants us to wrestle with the reality of growing old so that we'll use the present to make our future—even old age—into something beautiful. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by friend and recurring guest Anthony Marino from Buffalo Rumblings to preview a huge Sunday night showdown between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals in addition to some thoughts on Buffalo's acquisition of cornerback Rasul Douglas from the Green Bay Packers. The Bills did end up making a trade before Tuesday's deadline, much to the delight of most Bills fans. While Chicago cornerback Jaylon Johnson was the reported top targeted, Buffalo pivoted when the asking price was too high and landed on the Green Bay veteran Douglas. The guys talk about why he's a great schematic fit for the Buffalo defense and quite frankly, several other factors that make it appear like a sound trade. They also spend plenty of time previewing the Bills and Bengals game coming to prime time on Sunday night, outlaying a handful of things the guys feel is the key to a Buffalo victory and agreeing that this is truly a measuring stick type of game for the Bills. They also offer predictions on the game and much more. Be sure to follow Anthony on Twitter @AnthMarino and check out Buffalo Rumblings, featuring written and podcast/vidcast content pretty much daily. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. Michael #2: Wagtail 5 Wagtail is the leading open-source Python CMS, based on Django. Anything you can do in Python or Django, you can do in Wagtail. Wagtail 5.0 provides even more options for your content creation experience Dark mode has arrived SVG support Enhanced accessibility checker Delete more safely Some breaking changes in it because this release removes some of the old code paths that were maintained to give people more time to adapt their code to the new upgrades Add custom validation logic to your Wagtail projects. This is the way I've seen almost all modern usages of Google style docstrings nowadays. They still have some examples that include the type information because the original standard pre-dated Python 3 type annotations. Here is a simple example: https://github.com/johnthagen/python-blueprint/blob/main/src/fact/lib.py#L5 This also shows off the next point that you brought up: can I document all of the exceptions that a function could raise. Google docstrings have the "Raises:" block for this, and I find it pretty nice and concise for when this is needed. Also, PyCharm can be configured to autocomplete and render Google style docstrings https://www.jetbrains.com/help/pycharm/settings-tools-python-integrated-tools.html Tools | Python Integrated Tools | Docstrings | Docstring Format: Google What's nice about this, is that then PyCharm will render the google style docstrings in the Quick Doc function (Ctrl+Q), making the headers bold and larger and lists look nice so it's easy to read. Jacob Kendall was trained as an academic and was on the tenure track, when a lot changed. He underwent a second heart surgery, started a couple of businesses, left his job, got married, his father got very sick (and eventually died), he moved twice, started another grad program, and had his first child. Needless to say, this is a lot of change in little time. In this Beyond the Thesis interview, we'll be talking about the lessons Jacob has learned along the way and about his reflections on being ready for expected as well as unexpected inflection points in our lives. Here are five take-home messages from my conversation with Jacob: Pursue career paths that align with your passion, even if they deviate from traditional academic trajectories. Be proactive in planning for life events and transitions that may impact your personal and professional life, such as health issues or caregiving responsibilities. Embrace change and take risks for personal growth and making a positive impact. Seek advice and support from those who have gone through similar transitions, such as utilizing professional networks and platforms like LinkedIn. Remember that careers are not static destinations but a part of life's journey, and it's important to regularly reassess and make choices that align with personal fulfillment and well-being. Don't miss out on this great interview! Reach out to me or to Jacob using the links below if you have any feedback or any questions for us. Also, I'd love to get to know you better. Shoot us a message on Instagram with your biggest takeaway @team_healey Show Notes: Colonel John Boyd may be most famous for his skill as a fighter pilot and his creation of the OODA Loop, but his best advice has nothing to do with either. It had to do with character. In the middle of a career that spanned three wars, Boyd was assigned to a post in the Pentagon. Surrounded by Generals and political climbers who had made their careers backstabbing and butt kissing, Boyd set about making his department more efficient and budget conscious - an outlier amidst all of the tax-payer funded largesse. But Boyd's steadfast adherence to fighting fraud, waste and abuse weren't without cost, as he regularly found himself in dust-ups with his chain of command, causing his name to be added to the top line of many General's enemies lists. While Boyd was disappointed that his rigid adherence to his conscience likely cost him the opportunity to rise above the rank of Colonel, he didn't regret it, and made sure to tell young officers that they too would face a time for choosing sides. In life there would be a roll call, Boyd would say. And at that roll call every one of us will have to make a decision to do something or to be someone. To do something, you might have to make a few enemies. To be someone, you might have to compromise your character. When it comes to the pursuit of virtue, we must prioritize action. It encourages us to focus on becoming good individuals by embodying virtuous qualities and practicing moral principles rather than getting entangled in chasing the acclaim of others. We talk about it on the podcast today! Until Wednesday…out of role.

Tropicana Field takes a ton of criticism (and rightfully so to a point) but in theory, there is no other home ballpark like it, the Rays have had success there, and the fans that do show up have the place to themselves. Is The Trop "low key" underrated?
In the second hour of Wednesday's BBMS, Ed and Rob start off with a trip through What's Trending in social media and then shift gears to the Ravens, as EDC says on The Lounge podcast that the hopes are the team can re-sign Queen long term. Would that be a good move? Sticking with the Ravens, word is Patrick Mahomes will re-work his contract to help the Chiefs. Will Lamar do the same when the time comes? To close the hour out the guys hand out Shovels of Wisdom, featuring a shovel from Ed to more dumb drivers.
Adam Carter joins the show for Ask Adam Anything after Chad has a discussion about death and planning that time before it's too late.
After viewing and attending multiple funerals over the last few days, Chad speaks about the growing number of people without a strong religious affiliation and the thought that we may not all know where our bodies will end up when we die.
When the time comes will you be ready? Will you have the courage to make a change or to see a new viewpoint? This episode is powerful for parents of those in addiction and anyone with a trauma story. Connect with Valerie at: www.ValerieSilveira.com
