In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the steps involved in becoming a naturopathic doctor and provides information on accredited naturopathic medical schools. She emphasizes the importance of choosing an accredited school for credibility and legal recognition as a naturopathic doctor. Dr. Danielle also shares her personal experience in choosing a school and highlights the need to visit the school and interact with current students to get a feel for the program and student body. She mentions the option of residency after medical school and suggests alternative programs for healthcare providers interested in incorporating naturopathic principles into their practice. Takeaways To become a naturopathic doctor, it is important to choose an accredited naturopathic medical school. There are only four accredited naturopathic medical schools in the United States: Bastyr, NUNM, Sonoran, and NUHS. Undergraduate majors can vary, but completing the pre-med requirements is necessary. Medical school is a four to five-year program that includes science-focused classes in the first two years and a variety of clinical rotations in the later years. Residency after medical school is optional but can provide additional training and experience. Alternative programs like the Institute of Functional Medicine and the Institute for Integrated Nutrition can be options for healthcare providers interested in naturopathic principles. In this episode of the Meniere's Muse Podcast, my conversation is with Anthony. Physicians told him many years ago, “there is nothing more we can do with you.” Many vestibular warriors have heard this very same thing or a variation of this comment. These words became his catalyst to become a student of self and began his journey of self-discovery. The inspiration to start Head Health Co. comes from 27 years' experience, 16 years as a chronic daily migraine patient and currently 11 years free from both vestibular and chronic migraine. Since his last migraine on May 13, 2011 Anthony has spend 10,000 plus hours developing the core logic for Head Health, including analysis of 2,000 peer reviewed literature and journal articles, market data of over 5,000 migraine sufferers, thousands of one to one in group coaching sessions and the creation of 6 migraine lifestyle health programs. Anthony is also a certified health coach from the Institute for Integrated Nutrition and a founding member of the John Maxwell Team. This is Part One in a 2-Part Series where Anthony shares his migraine journey and how he came to be migraine free for the past 11 years. If you would like to learn about or reach out to Anthony or Head Health: Instagram Facebook Website LinkedIn To reach out to myself, Heather Davies: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/menieresmuse/ Found on most podcast platforms: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/menieres-muse/id1609095463 YouTube PRIVATE Facebook Group If you would like to learn more about Vestibular Disorders Association, please go to the Vestibular Disorder Association Thank you for being here warriors! This week I am sharing how I lost 50 lbs and guess what? It's a lot easier than you think! No, I didn't join a dietary cult or have to drink some sacred juice, but I will say I went in with a simple and practical mindset. I had to do a little thinking into my past to reflect on what worked and didn't work. After listening to several nutritionists and physicians speak at the Institute for Integrated Nutrition, I realized the key for me was filling my plate with lots of produce and protein. I began to learn what “full” is actually supposed to feel like and let my body guide me to what foods it truly likes. This helped me snack way less and enjoy my meals even more. Listen to this week's episode to hear how I lost the weight and know that the freedom to make choices for myself instead of a program or book telling me what to do was responsible for a great deal of the success. On this week's podcast episode you'll hear: How to trust your own body Including more whole foods into my meals left me feeling more energetic Protein was my go to snack and staple to keep me feeling full A food journal helped with hunger signals and emotional tracking Featured on the podcast: Book your discovery call here to explore working with me to get clear on what's holding you back in your weight loss journey so that we can get you started on the process right away and feeling confident at the front of the classroom Sign up for my free weight loss jumpstart guide- Teacher's Objective: Losing Weight for the Last Time- you can begin your weight loss journey today, no more waiting Like the show? In his twenties and early thirties, Tom had developed a lifestyle that centered on alcohol and cocaine. Although he had stopped excessive drinking and drug use, a number of things happened in a short period of time which led him back to that lifestyle. He was wrongfully fired from a high-profile job in 2009 in a public and embarrassing manner. Then in January of 2010, when his colleague's 18-year-old son was paralyzed from the neck down after a snowboarding accident, he agreed to assist with her law practice for a year to allow her to take time to care for her son. Just months later, in March of 2010, his brother was similarly paralyzed from the neck down in a ski accident and he wound up becoming intimately involved in his daily care and rehabilitation in Maine. In June of the same year, his mother was diagnosed with throat cancer, which had Tom running back and forth to Albany to assist in taking his Mom to chemotherapy treatments and other doctor appointments.Taking on all of these new responsibilities, on top of running his own law firm, was extremely overwhelming. Given the utter lack of even minimal help from other family members in dealing with his brother's accident and other issues, Tom returned to his reliance on alcohol and drugs as a crutch to keep up with all of these demands. This resulted in Tom winding up at rehab in upstate New York in May of 2011. When he entered rehab he was 140 pounds, had bleeding gums from frequent cocaine use, cardiac and pulmonary problems from smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, and was near bankruptcy. There was no doubt Tom was a mess. When he left rehab one month later, Tom was 177 pounds with a muffin top, his gums were healing, and he faced the challenge of cleaning up the messes created in every aspect of his life.Nutrition, exercise and a regular twelve-step practice have helped Tom overcome these obstacles. In the last five years, he has rarely been sick; he set out to eat right and exercise every day and on August 1, 2015, Tom won a physique contest for men over 35.Tom has made all his financial amends and no longer has the specter of bankruptcy hanging over his head. He was certified as a personal trainer in sports nutrition and weight management, all while maintaining a thriving law practice. After two years of freedom from alcohol and drugs, Tom was able to give up cigarettes and nicotine. In 2013, Tom graduated from the Institute for Integrated Nutrition. He has been free of alcohol and drugs since May 11, 2011, and cigarettes and nicotine since September 27, 2013. Tom measures his success by the differences between the life he was living when I entered rehab and his life today. It seems like looking back on a different person and a different lifetime. Through the grace of God, and by utilizing the twelve-steps and tools in this book, Tom was able to achieve his goals of sobriety and overall health.Website: https://www.spiritualadrenaline.comsFacebook: https://facebook.com/SpiritualAdrenaline/Instagram: @Spiritual_AdrTwitter: @spiritualadrenYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZn-be9v4Qhi2QwAQOZI57AMore info – http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy – The Nation's Leading Accredited Addiction Coaching & Intervention Training: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly – http://crowflyrocks.com/
In Today's show we had Nathan Walz on the show to talk about light, water and magnetism. Many people think that health is all about the food that we eat. We've been told by "food gurus" that the only thing our biology looks for to determine health is the food we're eating. This is good for them because it helps to sell supplements, superfood powders and herbs. Don't get me wrong, I love these things. But if you really want to move the needle and apply the greatest amount of leverage for improving your health, you MUST focus on light, water and magnetism. You see, we're only eating the food to carry information into our bodies. This information is transferred through photons absorbed from the sun. Food is simply a repository for photonic energy that it stores from the sun. When we eat that food, we're eating sun energy. Biophotons. I love good organic food but why focus on the food when we can go directly to the source...the sun! In this show we talked about the elements of health that will really move the needle for you. Light. Water. Magnetism. Nathan is a really great guy and I love supporting the work that he does. He helps people on multiple levels. He works on the spiritual aspect of health, personal growth, success, diet, light, water, magnetism, EMF mitigation and more. He's become a good friend of the show and I love supporting good people that are in it for the right reasons. To help people improve. Enjoy the show and thanks for sharing it with your friends! Following on from the last couple of episodes with Jacqui close to burnout, and Ush making hard decisions herself, this guest had just what they both needed to hear. Brigette Sigley was the ultimate superwoman juggling a successful business and family. Like many she didn't see the warning signs. First came a brain tumour then breast cancer. She felt totally responsible for bringing in an income and providing for the needs of her family. Living by the hormones of stress had become her “normal”. Brigette realised she needed to find a way to live so she could be there for her family. Brigette went on a transformational journey. Over a 4 year period, she trained with some of the world's best health practitioners from both Eastern and Western Medicine. She researched the science behind stress and studied to become an Integrated Health Coach out of the Institute of Integrated Nutrition in New York. She also studied with many of the Masters in India. Ten years later she now has that elusive life balance without having to sacrifice anything. Her passion is inspiring women to get off the hamster wheel and to reignite their life so they can experience more peace and fulfilment and to avoid a stress related crisis like the one she went through. In this week's episode of Energetically You I had the privilege to interview my good friend and fellow sugar detox expert Lily Sokolov about how she lost 45 pounds and came to be a Health Coach with the Institute of Integrated Nutrition. The top questions we will be asking ourselves throughout the episode include: Why did she start detoxing sugar? What is the key to sugar detoxing? How does sugar and refined flour affect your appearance? Why is it important to detox with a community? Why do women struggle with sugar addiction postpartum? Quote "This community of people started asking me questions, as if I was an expert. I realized I need to answer these questions, I had zero knowledge and this is when I found integrated nutrition (IIN)." “The key is to listen to my body.” Thank you for listening! Just enter code EHR25 at checkout while it lasts! Nathan Walz joined us this time on a different kind of show. Normally Nathan and I usually discuss things like biohacking with light, water and magnetism. We'll talk about EMF or even 5G, basically what they call non native EMF or nnEMF. But this time we really wanted to discuss something very serious that's also affecting our health and our freedom. More and more states in the Union are going to be following California with regards to vaccine laws. For those that do not know, California recently made it impossible for any child to attend a public or private school without being fully vaccinated. This means they removed the philosophical, religious and now medical vaccine exemptions. What this means is that even your doctor cannot give you an vaccine exemption. This is absolutely crazy and our society is becoming more and more tyrannical. Nathan and I discuss what's going on and what we might be able to do about it. Thanks for listening! It’s time for some nutrition talk. Stress is high, we need to boost immunity, and it’s time for a physical and energetic-reset. Therefore, I brought in 2 of my nutritionist friends, Lori Sawyer & Caren Boscaino, to talk about all things nutrition. They are both moms, busy entrepreneurs, fitness pros, and nutritionists who “get it” when it comes to food, fuel and having FUN with your nutrition. Specifically, in today’s episode, we discuss… How to balance out being a busy parent, kids around the house more & eating more, and some ways to include them in your nutrition. What can you do if your kids are struggling right now with the current state-of-affairs and how it affects appetite and nutrition. What specific foods to eat to boost immunity. How insulin plays a huge role in both weight-loss and energy and what foods NOT to eat to avoid insulin spikes. My “secret” to avoid sugar cravings. Gut health and what foods and supplements one should eat to ensure gut health. How to avoid “Yo-Yo” Dieting and create a sustained nutrition plan to maximize energy & stamina. Thoughts on Intermittent Fasting. Why gyms and fit-pros need to make sure their nutrition programs are buttoned up right now and can offer results-based, but realistic, nutritional programming. Lori and Caren don’t hold back in sharing their best “Clean Cut Nutrition” tips and habits to maximize one’s health and vitality right now. We have all experienced grief in our life, the loss of a loved one, a pet, a job, a relationship. And then there is collective grief, the grief we are feeling right now around how our whole world is changing due the unique circumstances we are living in with Covid-19 and how that affects us as a community, a society. Join us in conversation with Dipti Solanki, a grief coach, to discuss why the grieving process is important, how we can support ourselves and each other as we walk through the challenges that grief presents. Dipti Solanki is a rare breed: she isn't afraid to sit with her own or other people's discomfort. As a homeopath, life and grief coach, she walks alongside women who are no longer willing to live lives of resentment, tense relationships, deep sorrow, frustrated ambition and hollow friendships. Instead, Dipti guides them through a deep healing process that clears out the stagnant grief that keeps them stuck, and shows them the amazing potential that each day holds. Dipti was devastated by grief early in her own life. Like many people, she thought she was “fine” until persistent depression and severe anxiety took over. The process that Dipti takes her clients through mirrors what she experienced, which is why she's so committed to spreading the message that positive change and healing ARE possible. When Dipti learned that her unresolved grief was keeping her from meaningful relationships, living her truth and feeling true happiness, she dedicated her life to helping women clear out the sludge of old emotional wounds and live life beyond their wildest imaginings. Her clients have never looked back, and neither has she. Dipti Solanki is a qualified Grief & Life Coach, registered Homeopath and lectures at the College of Integrated Nutrition and Homeopathy.' On today’s episode, I'm chatting about how to master your elevator pitch. I have been in your shoes. I graduated from the Institute for Integrated Nutrition in 2010. I one hundred percent believed that it would be extremely easy to get somebody to pay $150 for an hour or $297 for the month. The truth is that I struggled. I realized pretty fast that I needed to have an extremely clear message. I am going to teach you how to master your hook and your story in an elegant way that doesn’t overwhelm your ideal client. In Today’s Episode: [01:53] Rachel was diagnosed with multiple diagnoses and she was on life support twice because of Asthma. She had food allergies and sensitivities, and more. [02:19] How do we find our ideal client? How do we get clear on what we do? [02:41] Today we are starting with the fundamentals of how to get clear on that elevator pitch. [03:55] Step number one is to step back from the overwhelm and noise and take a deep breath and get clear on why you started this business. [04:24] What prompted you to get into this business? After this episode, write it down or video it with your phone. [05:14] Allow yourself to go deep into that why, the story behind why you came into this practice. [06:11] Let yourself brainstorm and be creative. [07:08] Don’t let your overwhelm and fear of perfection of the perfect pitch stop you. [07:56] I am capable of speaking to my ideal client without perfection. [08:27] Those who are successful dream so big that nobody believes they can do it. [09:42] Rachel knew she had to change the game for other moms like her and educate them. [10:11] Her why has never changed. [11:18] Change is hard, but she knew that it was vital and essential for her to get clear. [12:17] She went from a surviving autoimmune mess to the badass thriving woman she is today. She went from an adrenal fatigued mom to the badass thriving woman she is today because she has the tools on how to address those issues. [13:01] Start by writing down how you did it. What was happening, what was life like, and when did you drop to your knees? [16:21] We have to do this work because we are in such a toxic world and we want our children to be able to thrive in today’s world. [18:57] You need to write down how you came out of your wake up problem and fear. When you write it down, you have just spoken to your ideal client. Keep it simple! [20:11] I worked with ________ who struggled with ________. I helped them with the following steps________ so they can ________. [22:57] Most moms put themselves last and they will always sacrifice for their children and their family. Resources: Go to https://rachelafeldman.com/events for the new challenge. Stacy Margolin Potter reached into the top ranks of pro tennis players during a golden age of women's tennis, along with Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Chrissie Evert, reaching #18 in ranking. She shares with "Ojai: Talk of the Town" her deep love of, and long history with, Ojai where she won seven titles at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament, the world's oldest amateur tennis tournament. She tells a fun story about getting food poisoning during the tournament and still drawing upon inner reserves of strength and determination to triumph. Growing up in Beverly Hills as a member of a tennis-loving family, Stacy joined the boy's team in high school to sharpen her preternatural skill at the game, bruising many men's egos. From there, she went to USC, leading their squad to a national championship, and on to the pro tour. During her five-year relationship with John McEnroe, Stacy inadvertently was an participant in an international incident at Wimbledon, in which McEnroe, enraged at the impertinence of the English press asking about her whereabouts, started a punch-up between the American press and English press. Retiring at age 26 from the tour, she moved to Ojai after a romantic vacation with future husband Ian Potter, the adventure guide, with rock climbing and bicycling and honky-tonking at The Wheel. Next visit they went to Landucci's restaurant at Wheeler Hot Springs, building a store of memories. She began working at the Oaks at Ojai with fitness pioneer Sheila Cluff and tennis coach Helen Allen, teaching their famous immersive "tennis week," which drew people from all over the country. The Potters now own Trails by Potter, leading people on bike rides, rock climbs and tennis lessons around Ojai, guiding people into our gorgeous country. Stacy returned to college after retiring from the tour, first getting her master's degree at Pepperdine, then taking up a paid internship at a recovery center, learning about addiction. That in turn led her into a career dealing with eating disorders, teaching a program called "Eating and Exercise Counseling." That led her to Institute of Integrated Nutrition, an online platform to "look at the whole person," which became the basis of her new enterprise, balanced eating & lifestyle coaching, which puts all the elements of her life together. She learned about 101 diet plans, trying many herself as a guinea pig. We conclude with a talk about finding, and staying, on your healthy path, and how Ojai makes it much easier than many places. For Stacy, it's not about shaming yourself for bad choices, it's about making good choices and letting the healthy feelings crowd out the unhealthy ones.
In this episode, I talk with Jodie Campbell, Nutrition + Digestive Health Coach about the importance of understanding how your Gut can have a direct impact on the brain. Did you know that your gut is considered your second brain? We go deep into this conversation, Jodie believes that it all starts with the Gut. It is one thing to pay attention to our brain but have you considered all the factors that influence it? I invite you to this very informative talk with Coach Jodie. About Coach Jodie Campbell Years ago, healing my own digestive system had a massive ripple effect on my whole body. No more migraines, lactose intolerance, IBS, mood swings, poor complexion, sugar cravings, low immunity, PMS, or lack of energy. Of course, it wasn’t an overnight transformation. It started with multiple doctors visits, fear-based media and marketing that manipulated my food choices, and fad diets with a nauseating amount of conflicting advice. What I needed more than anything at the time was someone to shoot it to me straight, someone to actually help! And so instead of looking for her, I became her. I’ve been a Certified Holistic Health Coach for 7 years, with formal training from the Institute of Integrated Nutrition and Nutrition Advisory training for the Sanoviv Medical Institute. Current student at the School for Applied Functional Medicine. Through my ongoing training and deep experiences with hundreds of clients, I’ve seen firsthand that most people have a compromised digestive tract. With no idea that this is the root source of their frustrating symptoms being experienced throughout their body. reach out to her on https://jodiecampbell.ca/fixyourguts follow her on Instagram at @JODIEDCAMPBELL Follow me on Instagram at ProudlyADHD_coachcathy or book a discovery call with me to better understand your brain at www.readysetchoose.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/proudlyadhd/message

Then in January of 2010, when his colleague’s 18-year-old son was paralyzed from the neck down after a snowboarding accident, he agreed to assist with her law practice for a year to allow her to take time to care for her son. Given the utter lack of even minimal help from other family members in dealing with his brother’s accident and other issues, Tom returned to his reliance on alcohol and drugs as a crutch to keep up with all of these demands. Through the grace of God, and by utilizing the twelve-steps and tools in this book, Tom was able to achieve his goals of sobriety and overall health.Website: https://www.spiritualadrenaline.comsFacebook: https://facebook.com/SpiritualAdrenaline/Instagram: @Spiritual_AdrTwitter: @spiritualadrenYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZn-be9v4Qhi2QwAQOZI57AMore info – http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy – The Nation’s Leading Accredited Addiction Coaching & Intervention Training: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly – http://crowflyrocks.com/Unpause Your Life with Dr. Cali Esteshttps://businessinnovatorsradio.com/unpause-your-life/

Tom measures his success by the differences between the life he was living when I entered rehab and his life today. It seems like looking back on a different person and a different lifetime. Then in January of 2010, when his colleague’s 18-year-old son was paralyzed from the neck down after a snowboarding accident, he agreed to assist with her law practice for a year to allow her to take time to care for her son. Given the utter lack of even minimal help from other family members in dealing with his brother’s accident and other issues, Tom returned to his reliance on alcohol and drugs as a crutch to keep up with all of these demands. FYI, the audio on this is a little off due to a lot of background noise. Basically my side of the mic is pointed towards all the background noise so I sound far away and Will sounds great. It should be tolerable though. I am very honored to bring my friend and basically BJJ Jedi Master Will Valencia to this episode of the JitsCast! Will Valencia is a Black Belt under Andrew Eidson and trains and 4S BJJ in San Diego, CA. Will was the first person to show me how utterly garbage my Jiu Jitsu was when I was a new White Belt (he was then a Brown Belt) while not making me feel like an idiot. Power Quotes From The Show "There's always going to be work to do in a relationship, but you get to choose who you want to do it with. You and your partner have to learn how to be in conflict together. So, if doing that work and being in conflict together always brings out the worst in both of you, that tells you something about your relationship." - Amy Baglan "I've always had this desire that people show up as their authentic self rather than put on a front or be superficial. I can't connect with others when they're not being true about themselves." - Amy Baglan "I always urge people to look at how a potential partner acts and not pay attention to what they say. The way that people show up in the world, their behavior, and how they treat other people including yourself cannot be filtered by words." - Amy Baglan "Dating apps are almost like a trigger happy, fast food style atmosphere where there's almost too many options and choices. This is teaching younger generations that this is all there is. They learn that people can be disposable and that the quantity of connections over quality is better." - Amy Baglan "If all a person does is share pictures of selfies on a dating app and they only care about what their body looks like, then they probably don't value anything else about themselves. If that's the case, then I certainly don't think they're going to value much else about myself either." - Amy Baglan Links From Today's Show: MeetMindful Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube Amy Baglan: LinkedIn Twitter Amy Baglan - Mindful Dating on the Untangle Podcast Mindful Dating is Now a Thing - And This Buzzy New App is Here to Prove It 5 Rules for Mindful Dating & Relationship-Intention Setting this Holiday Season by Amy Baglan Variable Rewards: Want To Hook Users? We all have a different body and metabolism that can change from day to day. LEVL allows you to take measurements to actually see where your fat metabolism is at and what your body is using for fuel. So, instead of changing your whole lifestyle, you can adjust one thing at a time and see how that affects your levels each day. - Andrea Duchovonic Gone are the days of testing ketone levels by solely relying on blood meter devices. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST 20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE Rather than going the route of pricking your finger for blood measurements to test beta-hydroxybutyrate or BHB, you can now simply breathe into a device to test your acetone levels. With a single breath, you can biohack your way to become the healthiest version of yourself. In Wellness Force Radio 150, both Dr. Joe Anderson, Head of Clinical Science, and Andrea Duchovonic, Territory Account Manager, of LEVL share how this breathing device is changing the way you can track your ketone levels so that you can live your most optimal, healthy lifestyle. Discover who benefits from following a Ketogenic diet and why a breathing device is optimal for keeping track of your weight loss, brain function, and energy levels. Listen To Episode 150 As Dr. Joe Anderson and Andrea Duchovonic Uncover: How LEVL measures the state of Ketosis or fat metabolism. Who is Keto for? Who should avoid following a Keto lifestyle? Measuring with blood vs. breath and acetone levels- which one is more accurate for measuring ketone bodies? What is the physiology between sleep and how we can burn more fat? How long has this type of breath technology been around? What's the science behind it? What successful experiences have people had with using LEVL? How much sugar is too much to affect a Ketogenic diet? Andrea's experience with a sluggish thyroid and adrenal fatigue. Views on using exogenous Ketone powders and tracking the breath to try to live a healthy lifestyle. How can exogenous Ketone powders be beneficial for brain function; especially for Alzheimer's and dementia, but not for brain cancer. How you can adjust and improve your lifestyle by using the LEVL device. What are some key factors we should look at when making adjustments to our health and wellness? What's coming up next for LEVL in 2018? Common misconceptions about breathing technology How will LEVL help with personal coaches or trainers work and connect with their clients. Power Quotes From The Show "It turns out that the Keto diet is great for therapeutic uses as well. There is some evidence to demonstrate that an elevated level of ketones can help with therapy of cancer, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. However, even though there will be range of people who have a disease and benefit from ketosis, there will be those who do not benefit from it." - Dr. Joe Anderson "My keto-flu period lasted a long time. It lasted from 2 weeks to a month and so I tell people to give it 1-3 months. I was in a state of nutritional ketosis, but I wasn't feeling good and I almost wanted to give up, but I couldn't give up on myself that easy. I've been a sugar burner all my life and I knew that I wasn't going to be able to switch to becoming a fat burner in just a month." - Andrea Duchovonic "When you are losing fat, but you haven't been keto-adapted for a long period of time, eating foods with sugar can really hit you hard. Whereas, if you're around 6 months into a keto program and you're eating high fat and low sugar, you might be able to recover more quickly from eating a slice of cake because the machinery inside your body has already been ramped up. Lori and I met for lunch and we talked about business but then it quickly led into her incredible healthy story. I promise you that you can not predict what has happened to her and it is both fascinating and heartbreaking (with positives that come out of it). I am always so impressed with the resiliency of a physical body but also a determined person. Lori took her health struggle and became a health coach who is motivated to spread the message of reducing stress and becoming a healthier and stronger person. She is also an attorney by day and recognizes and experiences the struggles of attorneys (one of the highest groups if not the highest for suicide). Empathic Coaching http://learntruehealth.com/empathic-coaching/ Empathic Coaching With Kimberly Lackey Life is not always a bowl of cherries. When we feel depressed, we yearn to talk to someone. Friends or family are always not around to help. So finding someone who is great in empathic coaching can indeed lift our spirits. So guess who I have again on my show today? Kimberly Lackey! For my regular listeners, I'm sure you remember her. And for those who don't, Kimberly Lackey happens to be a Health Coach who does some awesome coaching with empathy. Integrative Health Coaching Aside from coaching with empathy, Lackey shared her cancer journey in our previous episode here at Learn True Health. Her health ordeal turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it helped her to understand people more. Some of you might be apprehensive in hiring someone like an Empathy Coach. But coaching with empathy is a process of gaining a client's trust by sincerely being an active listener. I honestly think it is wonderful to hire someone who can understand you. Then navigate those roadblocks in your life through coaching with empathy. Staying Active And what is new with Lackey? Well, after beating cancer and dealing with an arthritic condition, she admirably completed a triathlon. Furthermore, Lackey shares that training for a half marathon in preparation for the triathlon was the hardest. She said running is her least favorite event. However, that struggle to run isn't slowing Lackey down. Apart from continuing her business of coaching with empathy, she is currently training for the Giants race in San Francisco. Life Change The last time I spoke with Lackey, she was preparing to move to Northern California from Hawaii. It was indeed an interesting transition time for Lackey during the past six months. Aside from coaching with empathy, Lackey and I also tackled the topic about fear in the previous episode. Lackey herself had to deal with fear when she moved out of Hawaii. It took Lackey quite a while to process the reality that she was going to separate from friends and family. Going to an unknown place was scary for her. And who wouldn't be, right? Lackey says her whole business model has changed a lot during the first half of the year. Coupled with her fear of moving to California, friends, and family had to reassure her that things will turn out well. And it did. "Saying yes to life, I have met some amazing people. Regarding the community, I feel very connected," said Lackey. Exploring Writing And Publishing Lackey enjoys helping people sort out their issues. But this time around, she decided likewise to pursue her love for writing. Publishing children's books is something she'd also want to fulfill, among other things. "I love writing. If only I were supported emotionally when I was a child, my health journey would have been different," reveals Lackey. Reaching Out Through Public Speaking Public speaking is also something Lackey loves to do. This way, she gets to speak out and share her ideas to others. In fact, Lackey has done numerous speaking engagements in schools. She hopes to inspire kids to be more active in giving back to the community. And Lackey indeed has been setting an excellent example. Lackey has been actively fundraising for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society over the past few years. She, however, does something unique with the society every 4th of March to commemorate her cancer remission for 12 years now. Real People, Real Problems Kids are different nowadays, but we can't blame them entirely. Parents and society are primary factors on why dealing with children is currently a challenge. Parents are often busy working. Hence, we fail to be more attentive to our children's diet, what kind of friends they hang out with and changes in their behavior. As a result, we now have to deal with an alarming increase in cases of childhood cancer and other illnesses as well as teenage suicide. Society is also responsible for why there is an enormous pressure to look skinny and look good externally. Nurturing Kids With Empathy Raising children by nurturing them with empathy feeds their soul. When their mental and physical health is in the proper place, they would be able to grow up appreciating who they are and the people around them. Empathy empowers us to be well-rounded individuals, strong enough to face challenges. There would be fewer instances of angry outbursts in social media and fewer cases of cyber bullying. "Kids are like are sponges. They are amazingly receptive, but we don't give them any credit," said Lackey. Valuing Friendships I think it is harder for adults to make new friends compared to kids. We, adults, have to exert more effort if we want to meet new friends. It's true. Lackey says it was indeed hard for her to move to California because she felt so disconnected. But because she is a coach, Lackey knew she had no choice but to practice what she preaches. "Just do the things you love, and that's where you'll find people who are like you. I kept an open mind," Lackey said. She also says that one should know when to set up boundaries. Because there is so much empowerment in taking responsibility for ourselves. "Realistically, we can't wait for someone else to treat us the way we want. We need to set our lives up," urges Lackey. The Art Of Communication The foundation of all stable relationships and friendships is communication. We have to realize that expectation builds resentment. Hence, that's where bigger problems arise. So how do we avoid that? Once you've entered into an agreement, make a fresh start and give each other a chance to rebuild that trust. According to Lackey, a broken agreement is a perfect time to be empathic and initiate a discussion. Learning To Be More Empathic And just how can we be more empathic? First of all, Lackey says we have different levels of empathy. While it is easy for some people to understand the personal issues of others, some individuals need ample time to connect. Looking Ahead Lackey plans to further nurture her gift of empathy by joining a team of health coaches. She believes that in being with like-minded people, practice is more fulfilling instead of treading the entrepreneurial path. As for the rest of us, Lackey offers three simple tips on how to develop our empathic nature: Remind yourself to be grateful. Write down the three things you are thankful for. Reach out to somebody different every day and tell them how grateful you are to them. Kimberly Lackey received her BA in Communications with a Business Concentration from Auburn University. She holds a Florida Teaching Certificate in K-6 and English 6-12 and a Florida Real Estate Sales Associate. She also took a course at the Institute of Integrated Nutrition. Volunteering is her passion and Lackey previously served as a Board Member and Special Events Chair for High-Risk Hope. Lackey was also involved with the Junior League of Tampa. She participated in the Junior League of Tampa's volunteer training process, served as a writer for their publication and acted as Public Relations Chair. Through her teaching roles, she previously organized after-school cooking clubs. Lackey is likewise active in community events, especially if it involves sports. Get connected with Kimberly Lackey! This week Christa meets with Certified Health and Nutrition Coach, Monica Metz, to discuss how to get more vegetables onto your plate while making them taste great. They’ll be providing some helpful tips and tricks about how to prep your produce and make healthy eating easy for anyone. Motivated by Health Concerns As most people would attest to, a plate full of steamed broccoli doesn’t quite get the mouth watering and doesn't seem to satisfy most. No different than the rest of us, Monica was an occasional salad eater and wasn’t thrilled by filling up her plate with mostly vegetables. After years of struggling with migraines, high cholesterol and a pre-diabetes scare, she started to look into ways to make a change for her and her son. Monica became curious and starting looking through blogs online. This is when she became mesmerized by raw foods. Not only are raw foods extremely appealing to look at (color is key), but she was also able to follow how others were incorporating these foods in their everyday lifestyles. "Most people are motivated by some weight loss or some sort of diagnosis like high cholesterol..." Like most of the bloggers Monica followed, she then turned her passion into getting her certification online from the institute for Integrated Nutrition based in New York. Now, she primarily helps people online through group teachings and calls to actions through different health plans and detoxes. She has created a platform that helps teach the lifestyle for healthy choices and positive changes. With daily accountability calls and a system built as more of a “healthy food retreat” than a diet plan, Monica guides you to a lifetime of happiness in a much happier body. Now About Those Veggies Most of us know we need to eat more veggies, but with busy schedules and processed foods so accessible, what’s an easy way to get more of these greens in? It’s important to start with asking yourself how many vegetables are you eating currently? We’ve all sworn for a period time, we’re only going to eat salads and veggies, to only find ourselves pulling up at a drive through or being unhappy and hungry by the end of the day. We don’t want to create an emotional resistance against these foods by simply adding in more vegetables than we are currently consuming. Eventually, we can get to that ideal 50-75% of your plate being vegetables but that takes time. If we make an effort to add in a little more plant based foods every day these small wins will start creating healthier lifestyles. Don’t worry we’re not getting to the part where we tell you to only eat kale salads because they’re going to start tasting better than a burger. Although, salads are an amazing way to pack in all kinds of veggies. The body and brain likes variety, so salads are a great way to get it all in! We’re talking about real foods here, which are meant to be enjoyed. If you have a topping you enjoy, as long as most of the salad is veggies, add it and ENJOY IT! Practical Tips Another reason many times we frown about salads is because of the store-bought dressing. These dressings are usually packed with unhealthy fats and refined inflammatory oils and sugar. Not to mention, they just don’t taste as good as the ones we can make at home. Here’s an easy way to make dressing at home: Extra virgin olive oil Balsamic Vinegar Sea Salt/ Pepper to taste Add a touch of lemon or Dijon mustard for a full-flavored dressing that you know is healthy. Preparing your dressing and veggies ahead of time sets you up for success and a healthy meal. Here are some other prep tips that Monica likes to use: Frequent, short trips to the store Rinse and spin greens in advance Use a food processor The basic foundation of a great salad includes: Chopped veggies such as: peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, carrot and celery Savory nuts, seeds, olives Healthy fats like avocado and olive oil Another great way to pack in some nutrients are with green smoothies. Experiment with adding in some of Monica’s favorites below: Romaine - different from iceberg that lacks nutrients, romaine has mild flavor and mixes well with berries. Frozen beets – buy it cubed and leave frozen. Beets are great for blood pressure and help with oxygen efficiency so they make for a great pre-workout snack! Mix with berries or cherries! Mix in some carrots, cucumber, zucchini, or even left over sweet potato. Try it out! If raw vegetables are hard for you to digest, try some of these roasting tips: When roasted veggies, try to mix in raw coconut oil or avocado oil for baking/cooking instead of extra virgin olive oil. Roast 45 minutes to an hour with oil, salt & pepper. Sprinkle with rosemary or garlic for more flavor. Roasted broccoli or cauliflower are great to add into sauces later in the week or to make a salad dressing. Simply puree and add in some citrus, garlic, tahini (add warm water), or cumin. Drizzle on some veggies or salads to mix it up. Another way to transform your cooked veggies after the fact, is to toss them in with some coconut milk, tahini or softened nuts with homemade chicken broth which makes for a full-flavored soup! An Instantpot pressure cooker will make this a life changing way to transform these veggies with a quick, easy way to make rice or black beans to complement them. Although having all the nice equipment helps, the right ingredients are all you need. Final Tips: Simplify. When you go grocery shopping, start in the produce aisle, pick what calls you and what you get excited about it. You can too, can be an intuitive cook. Big batch cooking will save you time for your busy schedule but most importantly, when you reframe your vision about cooking it will become more fun. Appreciate the food and it will start to feed your body, as well as your goals. Cooking is a beautiful practice, embrace the idea that this is your time with your food. In this episode I enjoy an inspiring conversation with Anna Chisholm (annchisholm.com) on her journey from social worker, to being a mum and becoming a health coach. Anna is a plant based health coach and also an experienced podcast host on her show ‘Big Impact’ which is an interview series with people making big impacts in the health and wellness space, especially with plant based nutrition. She shares her methods for a healthy life through plant based eating, good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle and through her background as a social worker she is able to work at a deeper level with her clients. Anna shares her interesting journey to her health coaching business; How a fatal car crash as a young age lead her to helping others through a career as a social worker Studying at university in Sydney training as a social worker Practised for 10 years in hospitals in Sydney and London After experiencing burnout retraining as a personal trainer as she always enjoyed movement and being active Returning to Sydney to work as a social worker while pregnant with her daughter How she experienced burnout again whilst pregnant with her son and knew it was time for a change In 2013 she was influenced by beautiful food and wellness bloggers and the information being shared While taking a year’s maternity leave she completed an online course in Integrated Nutrition and began a new direction as a health coach Her passion for plant based health began while living in London with her husband. He made the decision to go vegan, and soon after she decided to join him. Through trial and error and also time to complete research, they found healthy nutritious food ideas that focused more on health benefits. More studies followed with Anna completing a Certificate in Plant Based Nutrition and she began sharing the benefits to health and also healing through a plant based diet. Anna’s client’s come to her for support on how to adopt plant based eating, and especially for mums to improve their health and wellness. Anna gives her views on the paleo v’s plant based diets and how there is actually a few common messages, including eating fresh fruit and vegetables and no dairy. Plant based diets include whole foods, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Anna suggests we have a responsibility to confirm scientific research on all foods, for example butter and coconut oil. She recommends that we read independent studies to look at all information provided to make correct choices for our health. I ask Anna to share her tips for self-love and self-care. Other than her healthy eating and exercise she includes– Daily walking alone – no trainers, no kids, no messages or notifications, just enjoying quiet space to think and connect with herself. Daily meditation – which can be a few minutes of breathing exercises or a guided mediation. Anna has an amazing health coach herself, who is also one of her close friends. She also has a business coach and close family who are very supportive. Her husband is also incredibly supportive and they work as a great team together. She explains how she found running a business from home has its benefits of flexibility, especially with small children, but can be isolating at times due to a lack of regular deep connection with others. For inspiration Anna listens to Rich Roll Podcast (plant-based endurance athlete) as well as following nutritionfacts.org She also loved reading ‘Rising Strong’ by Brene Brown. If you’re inspired to learn more about a healthy, plant based lifestyle join Anna’s 21 day Smoothie Challenge, for ideas on seasonal, fresh food.
