We are joined by the brilliant Jules Pashall (they/he) for this episode! Jules is a fat, white, trans/queer Jew who holds space as a somatic, creative and spiritual practitioner. Their offerings are built on the belief that undoing violent hierarchies and how they live in our bodies is part of the path of soul retrieval and collective liberation. How to fast tongue on the flute plus an easy hack! The flute as we know (this is a flute podcast after all) is such a beautiful and versatile instrument. One important aspect of flute playing is articulation, which involves controlling the initiation and termination of notes to create distinct and precise musical phrases. Now I know that we've done some pods on the subject of tonguing, and why articulation is not an easy one sized fits all technique for every piece and musical genre, however we've received several questions on how to tongue fast in the past couple of weeks and this next 10 mins whilst it is by no mean definitive as let's face it, it's a bitesize short pod, that said, let's jump in to the world of fast tonguing and see where it takes us: Double and triple tonguing are techniques used in flute playing to articulate repeated or rapid notes in a musical passage. They involve using the tongue to create a sequence of articulated sounds, allowing for clear and precise execution of fast passages. T We may have made 273 Talking Flute podcasts over the past 6 years, however we still need to you to like and rate the podcast on whatever provider you are listening to this on! In a rehearsal room at the Howard Conservatory of Music, Don Armado debates the nature of love with Moth before releasing Costard from bondage to deliver a love letter he wrote to Jacquenetta. Costard celebrates his payment and is about to set off on his errand when Berowne hires him to deliver a love letter he wrote to Rosaline. Off campus, the Princess and her entourage admire the king performing dressage on his horse as they prepare to hunt. Costard arrives to deliver Berowne's letter to Rosaline but accidentally delivers Armado's letter, which Boyet reads out loud to the delight of all the ladies as they set off on the deer hunt. Later, the scholars Nathaniel and Holofernes critique the deer hunt on a bus ride back to campus. Jaquenetta gets on board and asks Nathaniel to read the letter Costard delivered to her out loud because she cannot read it herself. Holofernes realizes that the letter has been delivered to the wrong person. She tells Jaquenetta to bring it to the King. Jaquenetta sets off, taking Costard with her. Tonguing and articulation is such a large and fundamental subject to flute playing that 'Talking Flutes' host and Professor of flute at the Royal Academy of Music in London Clare Southworth was originally unwilling to record a podcast on such a complex area. With so many variables depending on the piece, what the performer is wanting to emphasise, speed vs clarity, notational length etc Clare's reluctance was based around what can be put across in a podcast of acceptable length. This is where your emails come in. So many of you have requested information and guidance on this subject that Clare has relented and has recorded this brief look on the complexity that is articulation. 'Talking Flutes' and 'Talking Flutes Extra' are podcast productions by the Trevor James flute Company. For more information visit www.trevorjamesflutes.com

Open Studio artist Sean Jones goes over some of his keys to tonguing on the trumpet, and exercises he does to practice.====================================================================================What's up everybody? Sean Jones two-minute jazz here. This is not necessarily related to jazz, but related to pedagogy. I'm gonna talk about tonguing a little bit. Specifically multiple tonguing.I like to do different multiple tonguing in my practicing, also on my solo playing. Alright, double tonguing, triple tonguing. Now the way that I practice that is I like to isolate the syllables of thedouble tongue, okay, tew and kew, alright? Tewkoo, tewkoo, tewkoo, tewkoo tew.So I'll just isolate the tew, and then I'll play the back end of that which is the koo. Notice I'm saying koo, not kuh. Okay, kuh is a little too far in the back for me. I like to say koo because it's more forward. And I try to make that sound exactly like the single tone.Okay so, that was just the koo. Now I like to do it backwards. kootew, kootew, koo.Alright, trying to make that sound like the tew and the koo syllable. Now we come along and we do the tewkoo, the regular way that you would do double tounging.Single, or the tew.The koo.Backwards.and forward. Tewkoo.Trying to get them to all sound the same and that's a great workout for your tongue. Get the muscle working. Works out different parts of the tongue and then it also helps with your jazz articulations. So I hope that helps. Thanks.=====================================================================================Check out more trumpet tips, tricks and entire length lessons from Sean Jones only at Open Studiohttps://www.openstudionetwork.com/project/jtf-overview/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
