During the Battle of Gettysburg, the wooded slopes of Culp's Hill became the scene of some of the fiercest and longest fighting of the entire battle. Confederate forces launched repeated attacks against Union troops defending hastily built breastworks in the darkness of July 2 and the morning of July 3.
