Send Wilk a text with your feedback! (incoming msgs only - I can't reply) Kevin Dolan and Peter Calfee met at a Veterans Day luncheon in 2022 and spent three years writing Hijacked: Our Republic — a book built around one essential question: what does it take to keep what the founders built? In this conversation, Kevin and Peter walk through the six foundational pillars they believe hold a republic together — critical thinking, education, faith and values, history, political systems, and economics — and explain how each one has been quietly compromised. The word "hijacked" isn't hyperbole. It's a diagnosis. One exchange stands out: Kevin's explanation of why two people can look at the same set of facts, weigh them differently, and reach completely different conclusions — and why that's actually how it's supposed to work. The problem isn't disagreement. The problem is that we've stopped being interested in each other. If you want to understand the root causes behind the noise — and think seriously about what restoring the social contract actually requires — this episode is worth your time. Find the book at hijackedourrepublic.com. The world is a better place if we are better people. That begins with each of us as individuals. Be kind to one another. Be grateful for all you've got. The US History course aspires to challenge the College Board's AP US History course, by pushing a decidedly biased curriculum, rooted in fundamental lies and mythology about America. American exceptionalism, seeing things like slavery and indigenous genocide and displacement as “aberrations from an otherwise admirable story,” and advocating students read the bible to understand the Christian roots of the Puritans are the tip of the iceberg. What if the Confederacy's greatest battlefield commander had survived? After being mortally wounded by friendly fire at Chancellorsville in May 1863, Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson was gone just weeks before Gettysburg. But what if he lived? In this episode of Battles of the American Civil War, we dive into one of the biggest “what ifs” in American history and explore how the Battle of Gettysburg, Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North, and maybe even the entire Civil War could have unfolded differently with Stonewall Jackson still at Lee's side. Would Jackson have taken Cemetery Hill on the first day? Would Pickett's Charge even happen? Or was the Confederacy already doomed no matter who survived? This is the story of the man Lee called his “right arm” and the alternate timeline that still haunts Civil War historians today.

In this week's episode of The Learning Curve, co-hosts U-Ark Prof. Albert Cheng and retired MN Supreme Court Justice Barry Anderson speak with Prof. Kevin Gutzman, Professor and former Chairman of the Department of History at Western Connecticut State University, and New York Times best selling author of The Jeffersonians: The Visionary Presidencies of Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. Prof. Gutzman examines the political and constitutional legacy of America's “Virginia Dynasty,” beginning with President Thomas Jefferson's philosophy of limited government, states' rights, and religious liberty. He explores Jefferson's sharp political differences with the Federalists, the importance of his first inaugural address, and major events such as the Louisiana Purchase and the Embargo Act. Turning to President James Madison, Prof. Gutzman discusses the “Father of the Constitution's” disastrous administration during the War of 1812, and reflects on how the conflict severely tested Jeffersonian political ideals. He also considers the jurisprudence of President Madison's nominee Justice Joseph Story and his relationship with Chief Justice John Marshall and other members of the U.S. Supreme Court. Prof. Gutzman highlights President James Monroe's often overlooked achievements, including the Monroe Doctrine and the “Era of Good Feelings,” while assessing the enduring legacy of the Jeffersonian presidents in shaping the Early Republic. He closes with a reading from The Jeffersonians: The Visionary Presidencies of Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe.

Lian and local food activist and hunter, Christie Green, describes how 16 years of solo hunting in New Mexico and Alaska changed her relationship to food, death, her own animal body, and what it means to live in right relationship with the land. Christie is the author of MOONIGHT ELK: One Woman's Hunt for Food and Freedom published by The University of New Mexico Press (UNMP)2024. Her forthcoming book, SALMON DREAMING: Coming Home to Alaska will be released by UNMP in 2026 and her third book, THE NEW MERIDIAN: Undamming the West will be released by UNMP in 2028. Residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Kenai, Alaska, and is a land and water steward, landscape architect, local food activist, educator and hunter.  With an educational background in US History from UC Berkeley and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of New Mexico, Green found and fashioned a profession that reflected her personal background and passion: connecting people and place. Food has since been the conduit for communion in Green's work. For Christies full bio see the show notes https://www.wildsovereignsoul.com/podcast/548. In this episode, Lian and Christie explore what happened the first time Christie chose to take a life in the field, how that moment cracked something open that decades of growing food, farming, and working the land hadn't quite reached, and how hunting alone became the condition under which she could finally hear herself. They move through the tension of paradox that lives inside the act of killing something you love and revere, how the architecture of an elk's body her own bodily self-criticism, and what it has meant to carry the moon's rhythm rather than the clock's into her time on the land. The conversation touches on what the animals have taught Christie, and on how she has come to understand hunting not as something she does but as something that is still changing who she is. Listen if you find yourself eating food you had little part in, and something about that arrangement has started to feel misaligned for you. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Why the moment of choosing to take a life bore more resemblance to giving birth than to anything Christie had anticipated, and what that told her about the body's intelligence How working inside the bodies of animals shifted something in Christie's relationship to her own flesh, its beauty, its genius, its refusal to be tidy What the moon, the dream life, and hunting alone have in common for Christie, and why surrendering to that rhythm has felt, over time, more true than pushing through ever did Resources and stuff spoken about: Visit Christie's website https://www.christiegreen.net/. No one shows up to work expecting to make history, but today's story shows how one small, irreversible decision created the one of the worst days at work in US History. If that “fork in the road” moment had played out in any other way, today's episode would mostly just be me chatting up Texans and offering up some gardening tips.On today's episode: you will find out why parts of Texas smell like money, and why that money smells unbreathably pungent and caustic; we will explore how there can come a point where calling something loud loses all meaning, and then your skin blows off; and we will learn about a disaster so catastrophic, that people who said “well, I'm glad that's all over with” were treated to an encore. And because you are listening on Patreon… you will hear about a river or two that defied convention by bursting into flames; you will learn about the time a German industrial site tried to fly into space because it's standard operating procedures director was actually a potted plant wearing a tie; and you will find out how British Petroleum basically became the Beatles of oil and gas disasters. They say everything's bigger in Texas, and I believe it. You will too, after you understand the scale of today's event and the resulting death toll. We'll spend our time in Texas City, and I do make a point in the episode that Texas is a fine place, but if you had to pick a part of visit, Texas City might not be it. It's certainly not for the faint of heart. Who would have thunk that the densest petrochemical infrastructure on Earth would make for a not-so-great picnic spot, but a great place to watch 4,000 pound ship anchors arc across the sky. It is my genuine pleasure to return here (hey Texas). We have a lot of listeners there, and I look forward to returning again in the future. In fact, if you're from the Lone Star State and have a favourite disaster in mind, please chime in. I'm sorry if I'm a little under the weather in this episode. I'm was a little under the weather while making it, so I apologize if I any ennui got in the pudding. If it helps, the next episode will be bloodless and cheerier, but bloodless in a way that might actually make you wish for blood. You'll just have to wait and see.–––––THANK YOU. Most shows survive at the whim of production companies and corporate sponsors, built from the top down. Doomsday doesn't exist because some network exec believes in it – it exists because actual people do. It's built from the bottom up, and it's been my privilege to bring you these stories. Just you, me, and a microphone.  I don't do this for you, so much as I do this because of you. OA1251 - We begin with a rare Friday appearance from OA democracy correspondent Jenessa Seymour, who stops in to provide some unequivocal good news from this week's elections.  Then: a temperature check on how mad should we be that the Supreme Court has cleared the way for Steve Bannon's conviction to be reversed, an appropriately respectful review of former Attorney General Pam Bondi's career, and a footnote involving an extremely litigious German tourist who made the most of his short time in New York City in the most American way possible. Lawfare's Contempt Tracker Brief for the United States in U.S. v. Bannon (filed 2/6/2026) Amicus brief in U.S. v. Today we explore the horrifying true story of the Radium Girls — young women told to “lip, dip, and paint” with radioactive dial paint while their employers hid the deadly consequences.
