Independent Political Strategist Bill Hillsman has masterminded some of the most effective and innovative election campaigns in the modern era. Hillsman first rocked the political world when he helped elect the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone in 1990 in one of the biggest political upsets in decades. In 1993, Hillsman took over a floundering Minneapolis mayoral campaign four weeks before election day, resulting in Sharon Sayles-Belton's election as the first African-American and the first woman mayor of Minneapolis, a city comprised of 85 percent white voters. He later shocked the world by helping Jesse “The Body” Ventura become Governor of Minnesota in 1998. When he joined independent candidate Ralph Nader during the 2000 election, his inventive campaign, created on a tiny budget, had the whole country talking and rethinking how we sell our politicians. He worked on independent campaigns for Arianna Huffington for Governor of California in 2003 and Kinky Friedman for Governor in Texas in 2006. And he created the groundbreaking and award-winning “Not There” television ad for Operation Truth (later Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) featuring Iraq veteran and amputee, Robert Acosta. Bill's innovative creative work has brought him a host of awards, including a Grand EFFIE for the Wellstone campaign. Both USA Today and Business Week named his Wellstone commercials the best political ads of 1990 and his Ventura commercials were honored with five POLLIE Awards from the American Association of Political Consultants. A master of effective TV Ads, marketing and branding, Bill is CEO of North Woods Advertising and has been working in independent politics for a generation–and understands independents better than anyone in America. And for decades, Bill has been a man on a mission to change our political system. His book Run The Other Way is an eye-opening look at the political landscape with a cast of characters that includes Colin Powell, Ross Perot, Donald Trump, Kinky Friedman and Warren Beatty. And with independents in the driver's seat to determine the 2024 Presidential election (and the future of our country) Bill is a wise and experienced leader we all need to hear from. He joins our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) in this latest episode to share what can be learned from Ventura's campaign 25 years later, how he defines an independent voter, how he sees them defining themselves, and gives an assessment of the entire independent movement landscape ranging from No Labels and Forward to Robert F Kennedy Jr and Cornel West. And Paul asks Bill who he thinks will win the election—and they talk a little baseball and more. No other show is digging into all things independent politics like we are. Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by author, activist and social entrepreneur Paul Rieckhoff is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. We discuss our relationship with Oil, take a look at the history of oil from starting with our reliance on the Middle East, how it impacts our economy, and why the price is high. Plus we discuss alternatives and look at a few reports with differing views and some fun graphs. Some facts for the graphs. U.S. gasoline prices jumped from $1.37 to $2.37 per gallon in 2005 as the price of a barrel averaged about $60.In 2008, oil prices rose to as high as $145 per barrel causing a search for alternate sources, and gas at the pump hit as high as $3.90 national average. By 2012, less than half the US oil consumption was imported, which took place under Obama, and in January 2015 decreased to around $50 per barrel gasoline fell to about $2.43 and then to a 20 year low of $2.14 in 2016, and have risen slightly since. After Trump took office in 2017, prices increased slowly, hitting $2.99 in May 2018 against a barrel cost of $74. After a slight dip in 2019, (oil companies made about $55 billion that year) prices fell sharply early in the COVID 19 pandemic, which of course was orchestrated by this podcast and our boss, George Soros, but raised quickly by may and increased steadily since then. When Biden was sworn in, the price per barrel of crude oil was $ 55, and the price at the pump was about $3 per gallon.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Bernie Sanders voters and the 2016 Presidential Election and how this narrative that the Bernie Bros cost Hillary Clinton the presidency is not only going on far too long but also is false. In Mr Humble's defense, I don't think he knew the future. But now, it's the past, although it certainly seems to be still an ongoing campaign. But lets look at it, starting with outlining the events preceding the DNC convention.Bernie built a coalition with a populist movement centered around workers rights, healthcare, raising the minimum wage and not accepting money from most PACs. The primary turned out to be more competitive than expected, with Clinton winning 55% to Sander's 43%, and the races early in the primary were much closer, with Sanders leading at times. After losing California, The Sanders campaign released a video statement on June 16 and announced that Sanders looked forward to helping Clinton defeat Trump, officially endorsing her on July 12.A week later, the Wiki Leaks story hithttps://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/24/16194086/bernie-trump-voters-studyhttps://www.businessinsider.com/hillary-clinton-pennsylvania-michigan-wisconsin-what-happened-2017-9★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

We look at how Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy and Paul Ryan's Young Guns strategy married the rise of the Tea Party, despite having some different views and strategy, especially on social issues. How did they coalesce and eventually collide? The Tea Party movement was an American fiscally conservative political movement within the Republican Party. Members of the movement called for lower taxes and for a reduction of the national debt and federal budget deficit through decreased government spending. The movement supported small-government principles and opposed government-sponsored universal healthcare. The Tea Party movement has been described as a popular constitutional movement composed of a mixture of libertarian, right-wing populist, and conservative activism. It has sponsored multiple protests and supported various political candidates since 2009. According to the American Enterprise Institute, various polls in 2013 estimated that slightly over 10 percent of Americans identified as part of the movement★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Ira Shapiro's new book The Betrayal is a look at the McConnell senate and turns his gaze to how the Senate responded to the challenges posed by the Trump administration and its prospects under President Biden. We discuss the book as well as ask our own questions about arguably the most important body in US government.Get the book here: https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Betrayal.html?id=7qleEAAAQBAJ&source=kp_book_descriptionIn two previous highly regarded books on the U.S. Senate, Ira Shapiro chronicled the institution from its apogee in the 1970s through its decline in the decades since. Now, Shapiro turns his gaze to how the Senate responded to the challenges posed by the Trump administration and its prospects under President Biden. The Founding Fathers gave the US Senate many functions, but it had one fundamental responsibility—its raison d'etre: to provide the check against a dangerous president who threatened our democracy. Two hundred and thirty years later, when Donald Trump, a potential authoritarian, finally reached the White House, the Senate should have served as both America's first and last lines of defense. Instead, we had the nightmare scenario: today's Senate, reduced through a long period of decline to a hyper-partisan, gridlocked shadow of its former self, was unable to meet its fundamental responsibility. Shapiro documents the pivotal challenges facing the Senate during the Trump administration, arguing that the body's failure to provide leadership represents the most catastrophic failure of government in American history. The last section covers the Senate's performance during President Biden's first year in office and looks forward to the 2022 Senate elections and beyond.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

The Ginger Geek Matt Delhauer joins us for our 100th show to discuss the political undertones and overtones (and of course some racism and classism) in the Star Wars franchise as a salute to May the Fourth be with you, and happy cinco de mayo too... Ahead of the release of the “Star Wars” film “Rogue One,” Disney chief executive Bob Iger made an emphatic claim when asked about the movie's message: “Frankly, this is a film that the world should enjoy. It is not a film that is, in any way, a political film,” he told the Hollywood Reporter, speaking about what was then the latest addition to the sprawling sci-fi saga. “There are no political statements in it, at all.”Iger was reacting to controversy over (quickly deleted) tweets from two of the film's writers. Chris Weitz had observed that the series' Galactic Empire represented “a white supremacist organization.” It was “opposed,” commented his colleague Gary Whitta, “by a multicultural group led by brave women.” Just weeks after the election of President Trump and the culmination of an acrimonious, racially charged political campaign, the film was hailed by some as “anti-Trumpian” — and subject to boycotts by irate members of the alt-right, a coterie of white nationalist who were upset about the film's supposed liberal bent.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

We explore the history of Sovereign Citizen groups in the US. Despite the white supremacist origins, it now includes varying racial ideologies, most commonly white, white identifying Hispanics and Blacks, with the latter often belong to the Black Israelites or the Moorish sects. Many of the beliefs are based on a bogus U.S. history lesson, which goes as follows: Since 1933, the U.S. dollar has been backed not by gold, but by the “full faith and credit” of the Federal government, which has pledged its citizenry as collateral, by selling our future earning capabilities to foreign investors, effectively enslaving all Americans. However, as mentioned earlier, when we are born, there is an account set up for us, called a Treasury Direct Account or TDA. These groups, such as the National Liberty Alliance and the Republic for the United States of America (literally RuSA, ironic, eh) also advocate creating a strawman, which is a second identity that appears to adhere to laws, in contrast with the true self, which doesn't.Happy Easter!Support Dig on America at www.patreon.com/digonamerica ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

A popular term for a political committee organized for the purpose of raising and spending money to elect and defeat candidates. Most PACs represent business, labor or ideological interests. PACs can give $5,000 to a candidate committee per election (primary, general or special). They can also give up to $15,000 annually to any national party committee, and $5,000 annually to any other PAC. PACs may receive up to $5,000 from any one individual, PAC or party committee per calendar year. A PAC must register with the FEC within 10 days of its formation, providing name and address for the PAC, its treasurer and any connected organizations. A ratchet effect is an instance of the restrained ability of human processes to be reversed once a specific thing has happened, analogous with the mechanical ratchet that holds the spring tight as a clock is wound up. The term is used in a variety of different silos, including sociology, famine cycle, game theory, production strategy, and anthropology, among others. For example, in economics, Budget Ratcheting occurs when positive variances in performance, lead to greater absolute changes in the following cycle, when compared to any negative variances in performance. Point is, it's not a strictly political idea, but this dig will focus on the ratcheting effect noted by the political left. Ratcheting, sometimes called the ratchet effect or ratchet theory in politics is the belief that the Democratic party is, like the Republican party, right wing, at least by global standards, and dampens positive change.Second ThoughtPlus Tom Brady comes out of retirement a day after his "final touchdown ball" is sold for over a half million dollars.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
