First of all - how typical of Dawn to totally take over the beginning of the episode - AND how typical of both of us to think this is episode 40 when in fact, it is episode 39.  Sigh.  But that's why you're going to love hearing what happens when you get the two of us together - unscripted. We can definitely laugh with and at each other and you can certainly find us LAUGHING THROUGH THE UGLY CRY (shameless plug for Dawn's first best-selling book!)   In fact, there's something powerfully resilient about finding joy amidst life's valleys.  One of the things I admire and respect about Dawn is how she shares that holding grief and joy simultaneously has been a profound journey for her. It's a poignant reminder of the sacred balance we all strive for.    So no matter the season of life you're in, especially if you're feeling that MID-LIFE BATTLE CRY (another shameless plug for Dawn's second best-seller!) then you're going to relate at how to get through the tough stuff with a lot of perspective and definitely some smiles when it's said and done.   Connect with Dawn online: www.dawnbarton.com Connect with Dawn on social: FB and IG ------------ Be sure to get your FREE BRAIN DRAIN and WEEKLY PLAN SHEET printable HERE -------------  Join the Tick Talk Tribe: Click HERE to become part of our vibrant community on Facebook. -------------  Tune In--- Subscribe, Rate, and Share: If you find value in this episode, be sure to subscribe, rate, and share the Tick Talk Podcast. There are people in the world who were once kids who grew up without the kind of parents you see on ‘90s sitcoms, kids whose parents abdicated all responsibility, who walked off the job, who just didn't do the one thing they were supposed to have done. Danielle Henderson was one of those kids. She's a grown-up now, and author of The Ugly Cry, a book that traces Danielle's childhood as a Black girl in a very white town in upstate New York with a mother who was struggling with her own life's disappointments. Have you heard the one about the young man who grew up in a Jewish-Italian home, married his high school sweetheart, and even though it ended in divorce, had a beautiful son together? You know, the one where the teenage son goes out on a fishing trip with his friend and ends up being the largest search and rescue event ever recorded in US Coast Guard history? In this remarkable episode, our guest is going to openly share the grieving he went through, the struggle of drug addiction while he tried to medicate the pain, and how he found hope and turned things around to become free from the grief. All this and much, much more in this week's episode of the Remarkable People Podcast, the Phil Cohen story!“Even though I don't have a Masters degree in psychology, I have a PhD in experience.” – Phil Cohen GUEST BIO: Phil Cohen is a keynote/ TEDx speaker, grief coach, and creator of The Grief Continuum™, a framework for helping others grow, flourish and overcome despair by discovering and developing their inner resilience. What is an "ugly cry"? Well, there's crying, either with joy or sorrow - and then there's crying so that you're just plain ugly. The make-up (if you use it) is streaking, you're bawling uncontrollable. It's messy any way you look at it. Dawn Barton has had plenty of occasions to cry the ugly cry. Loss of an infant child, with a subsequent divorce, then later getting breast cancer forcing her to lose much of the traits she valued, without which she felt a shell of herself. Dawn had to wrestle with feelings of anger toward her maker, not to mention inadequacy and feeling just plain ugly, whether she was crying or not. She realized that joy isn't a feeling, it's a focus. When she focused on being joyful, she saw things with a different perspective. That which made her feel ugly was reason to be grateful for her life. Now she shares her story with audiences all over, including those lucky enough to catch this episode of our show! In our conversation with Dawn, you'll hear: -Joy is a focus before a feeling...5:05 -God can handle us being angry with him...6:45 -Dawn's marriage couldn't survive tragedy...10:30 -Advice for people to fix their anger problem with God...12:45 -Dealing with breast cancer...14:30 -Good and bad advice...17:30 -Leaving a lucrative career to write a book...20:00 -Who's Lucky, and why did Dawn hate it?...26:30 -Why people feels sorry for people who have never dealt with tragedy...32:45 -3 things on Dawn's "Joy List"...35:55 -One thing that prevents people from choosing joy...38:05 About Dawn, who you can find at dawnbarton.com A multibillion-dollar direct sales company put Dawn on their Times Square billboard in the summer of 2018. In Dawn's thirty years of sales and marketing, she has been a top producer at every company she's worked for. Most recently, she was the #7 Sales Director in Mary Kay Cosmetics, when she took a leap of faith and left it all to write her first book, https://amzn.to/31tzGV6 (Laughing Through the Ugly Cry). Dawn has been a public speaker for more than ten years, giving talks about cancer, joy, female empowerment, and direct sales. When she's not encouraging other women to find joy and humor in even the most difficult of circumstances, you can find her living happily ever after in Cantonment, FL with her husband, daughter, parents, mother-in-law, two horses, four dogs, and three cats (the pear tree has been inspected with no partridges in sight.) In May 2021, Dawn was awarded "New Christian Author of The Year!" A random act of vandalism and some personal insecurities brought on the tears. Megan also shares her own past journey with depression and how she is able to recognize the difference between a funk mood and depression. They wrap it all up by chatting about the importance of self care and how that might look different for everyone. Even in our worst moods and moments, Megan and Meg are quick to remind us, we can always find something good, someway, somehow.
