On October 16, 2022, Young Sook An, a 42-year-old woman from Lacey, Washington was bound and gagged by her estranged 53-year-old husband and military intelligence veteran, Chae Kyong An. Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021   Lots and lots of tech, but great to see the Orcam Pro win the Accessibility category, let's see what wins next year. In case you are wondering, you can purchase the Orcam Pro from Quantum.   A Bit of a Revelation for Jan 2022, Redoing my Home Office   Suddenly realised I've been more or less evaluating and testing tech for others in the blind and low vision community, but I've not really taken full advantage of it myself. Time's have now changed with my new redone office taking fully advantage of what I have.   Went Off to Environmentally Dispose of my Macbook Pro from 2012   As part of the office redo, took my MacBook Pro 2012 off to buy local Apple reseller to get rid of correctly, and whilst there, also got my Macbook Air from 2013 reset.   Speaking of Stuff, Receiving my Framed iPhone 3GS today, and it's the iPhone Birthday for Jan 9 2007. Of course, the iPhone 3GS was the first iPhone to support VoiceOver.   While I'm talking abut the iPhone, besides faster processor, better screen, longer lasting battery, and better and better camera's, here some other major hardware changes in the iPhone since the 3GS with VoiceOver. 3GS with VoiceOver, 4S Siri, 5 lightning port, 5S finger print, 6s Apple Pay/NFC chip, 7 haptic Home button/no head phone jack, 8 wireless charging, 10 Face ID (no finger print), and no Home button, SE haptic  Home button.  12 Pro LIDAR (had to mention the camera at last).   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1totMpGEY0   Exploring Tech for Jan 2022   As the last Wednesday of Jan fulls on Australia Day on the 26th of Jan, the webinar will most likely be on the Thursday the 27th of Jan 2022. Just thought I'd give folks some warning. Check out the webinar page at. https://shop.visionaustralia.org   An Article That Appeared on Channel 9 News website concerning Amazon Alexa   A great little summary how I use the Echo.   https://www.9news.com.au/technology/amazon-alexa-for-the-blind-everyday-smart-tech-helping-australians-with-sight-disabilities/9c800761-a52f-4add-9a4d-1f437eaf11b0   Tried Out the Amazon /Alexa App in Windows   It works really really well.   Two Unique Ways to Tell the Time on an Apple Watch   Without VoiceOver running, when setup, touch 2 fingers on any watch face, time chimes, and of course (not mentioned by the article), Mickey and Mini Mouse watch faces.   https://www.makeuseof.com/unique-ways-tell-time-apple-watch/   Get the Time Spoken on Your Mac   System preferences, Doc, Clock.   Use Siri to Share Anything on your Screen   Just say Share this with Name.   https://www.macworld.com/article/544740/how-to-ios-15-siri-share-anything-on-your-screen.html   A Reminder about the Blind shell Classic 2 from Quantum   Physical keyboard and navigation keys, no touch screen, low vision features, speaking out of everything, voice control to launch apps, real FM Radio, and about 30 apps and growing. Here's the wedding photographer rant I talk about in the beginning of the show. Image Credit: Thomas Stewart Photography (view article here) Do your kids find your phone and say "here's your phone mommy?" Real eye opener - my kids probably think that my phone is a part of my being. And that brought some tears to my eyes. How often do we do that??? We take all the pictures to post on social media but we aren't actually PRESENT in the moment! Here's your big swift kick in the butt... grab your phone. Settings > Battery > Scroll down to see last 24 hours or last 7 days. It will show the activity base don% of battery usage, tap "show activity" and it will switch from the % to showing you in actual time during your day/week how much time you've spent in each app. Add up all the time you spend in your social media apps. Shocking, right? Even if you're good and only are on your phone an hour a day... in 7 days you've spent 7 hours. And in another 17 days you've spent an ENTIRE DAY on your phone in social media apps. Think about the time you could be spent doing the things you say you don't have time for - bible, church, working out, reading to your kids, keeping the house clean. If you read to your kids one hour a day instead of being on social media with virtual friends in one year you would have spent 15 days reading to your kids! And over a course of their time in your home you would have spent a total of about 9 months worth of hours reading to your kids before they graduate and move out. Now, if you put that in terms of social media if you ARENT spending that time intentionally then you're spending NINE MONTHS OF YOUR CHILDRENS LIVES on social media. I am NOT condemning anyone... this is because I've got a problem with it. I'll admit it. It's not a shiny perfect person thing to say... but the first step to making a change is admitting you've got a problem. Now, I've done this before. I get real good and intentional but then I get lonely, or bored, or tired and mindlessly scrolling becomes more and more of a habit - but these are the times we need a swift kick in the butt... so here we go! Practical ways to cut back the phone time and simplifying your phone usage. Settings that help Spend some time simplifying the social media and removing excess apps deleting people that you don't associate with anymore or don't even really know. Unroll. me - app/website Organzie your icons into folders - if you have to seek out an app to find it it will make you less likely to open it so often. It's some sort of psychology. Most of our scrolling and app usage is mindless, our thumb knows where that Instagram icon is... and it's a magnet! Turn off all of the notifications this one I'm a huge fan of. Think about it, we're in a world right now where the people who are the most important to us (in the moment or completely all the time) are pushed to the side because of a noise on our phone. With the notifications (noises, badges, banners) all turned off you won't be notified every time you get an email (which is probably spam) or a text (which might just be an emoji). I don't know about you but my ability to pick up the phone read the text and stop there went out the window a around the iPhone 3. I pick it up, check the meaningless text, then get on Instagram, Facebook , check my email, get lost on google. Then all of the sudden I've wasted 15 min of my life and told my kids to "hold on" 6 time.. because I'm mother of the year. Use Siri or Alexa more regularly - to ask questions instead of searching google or your calendar which then can spiral into a scroll fest. Keep it in silent Turn on grey scale in accessibility, display accommodations, filters. Do not disturb from 2 hours before bed to 2 hours after your normal wake time. Make a no phones in the bedroom, bathroom or kitchen rule. Get an ACTUAL alarm clock so you can charge your phone in another room. Carry a book or magazine with you Use a real to do list, or create your morning routine and vow to not pick up the phone until you're done with the routine or daily tasks. Set a reading goal. Pick up a hobby that is kinda mindless - coloring, knitting, crocheting, cross stitch (which I can never figure out how to do) Apps to help Download an app called "Checky" that will log how many times you pick up your phone. Set a goal to decrease by 5 every week until you're ok with how much you pick it up. Set goals for usage and check in regularly. Check in every night on how you've done. Download an app like "moment" - it tracks usage but also you can set time limits on each app.   Is this something you struggle with? I think in this age we all do, but its great to be able to step away and take a break from it all and be more present in the moment!   Let me know if you take a refreshing social media break!   Don't forget to hook up with me and some other mamas! Stephen and David spend most of this weeks show talking about home kit and the difference between Home Kit and the Internet of Things:   Some notes for listeners: What is the Internet of Things? The internet of things is where a device has network connectivity data and shares information back to a computer or smartphone.  An example is the Parrot Flower Power.  It looks a bit like a twig and you put it in a plant - then download the Flower Power app on to your iPhone and connect to the Parrot Flower Power through Bluetooth. You put into the app the type of plant the device is in and it will tell you how much water and sun the plant is getting through collecting this data with a solar and water detector. You receive alerts if your plant needs more water - or if it needs to be moved into the shade.  There are many apps like this available for many items that you may have in your home. But for each item you wish to interact with - there is an app. Which means many apps to go in and out of.  What is a connected home?  A connected home is where you can control accessories in your home, such as lights, door locks, security cameras, temperature control and power sources.  Each item in a home can be controlled separately  But with Apple's HomeKit - they can all talk to one another in the same app.  And even more exciting - be controlled via the built in personal assistant, Siri. Turning on your lights will be as easy as saying, “Turn on the lights” You might be asking, but how does it work?  Is Apple making lights now?  No…  In iOS 10, there is a new app for the platform, called the Home App.  Home App allows you easily connected HomeKit enabled devices and create a smart home. It is accessible on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and even the Apple TV.  You can set up each of the devices on a full customisable Home screen. And you can set up scenes so that a series of events occur at the same time.  For example, you can set up an “I'm Home” scene, which will mean your front door will unlock with a schlage door lock, your lights will turn on with Phillips Hue lights and your temperature control will activate.  Or you can turn lights on and off in one area through the app, or just using Siri “Hey Siri, turn off the bedroom lights” Apple Watch will also have quick glances, so that you can easily access the actions you may require on your wrist. You can also swipe up on your Control Centre and immediately have access to controlling your home.  And all of this can use the Personal Assistant of Siri.  Use Siri to activate a Scene or an individual item.  Setting up HomeKit accessories are very easy! Just tap on the Add button in the Home App, scan the barcode on the box that the item came in - select the name and room and you are done.  You can use Apple TV and your Apple ID to become remote access to your home. You can be away from home and using your iPhone that is with you, say “Hey Siri, did I leave my front door unlocked?” Siri will go back to the Apple TV connected on the same network on your phone, check the status of your door lock and tell you. You can then ask Siri to lock the door, unlock the door if a friend is wanting to get in, or turn your lights on and off.  HomeKit can also do event and time triggers  - even if you are not there.  Such as time based trigger - to turn your lights on every evening at 7pm.  Or geo based - so when you arrive home with your iPhone - the front door will automatically unlock.  All of this is done in a secure and private manner - the protocol or home kit is a two way handshake to securely set up the device.  To be secure Apple could not simply integrate with existing hubs and smart devices.  It had to build a platform and then convince third-party companies to build to it.  Not only did this entail programming, but Apple was also requiring the integration of secure hardware for end-to-end encryption. Apple's commitment to security means they did not want any cloud-based services, no surreptitious data gathering to learn more about your habits. Nothing leaves the confines of the accessory-Apple HomeKit relationship.  Which means your home is secured, and the data on when you enter and leave and turn on your lights and everything else, remain secure and private to you.  You can invite other users to access your home and you can add and remove people as needed. So if you have a house guest, they can turn on the lights. Also, with Apple TV now having the Home App also, they can control your home through the Apple TV.  For further info: http://www.apple.com/ios/homekit/

Battle Creative Block and Spend More Creating Creative block is the worst, especially when you forget that great idea you had when driving on the highway. How awesome would it be if you never had a shortage of ideas to draw from so you can spend more time creating? (that’s a drawing pun) I can safely say that I rarely deal with creative block because I collect practically every idea that comes my way. Someone on my newsletter recently asked me how I went about this and I felt my reply could make a helpful episode in case you struggle with a lack of ideas. Having a gold reserve of ideas has helped me battle creative block with: episode artwork client work personal work I’m going to give you 4 ways to collect and build up your idea gold reserve so you can spend more time creating. This will help you easily come back to that idea you had when waiting in line at Chik-Fil-A. A Pocket Sized Sketchbook Glued to Your Hip I keep a handy little sketchbook with me wherever I go so I can jot down a thumbnail sketch or write an idea on the fly. Usually, I'll roll with Field Notes brand or with something my friends produced like my friends Tinlun Studio or Cuttink Studio. Keeping it beside my bed at night is crucial as my head is constantly swimming with ideas when I try to sleep. I’m not taking any chances of forgetting it in the morning. This has been the most productive way of collecting ideas and I can’t recommend it enough if you struggle generating ideas on the spot. The gold reserve I’ve built up to battle creative block is buried in all these sketchbooks--perfect for referencing when I need inspiration to punch me in the face. Use a Task Manager / Note App Sometimes you need to be a bit more thorough with your idea through writing and lists--especially if you have shitty handwriting. In this case, I love using Wunderlist which is a task manager app for desktop and mobile. There are plenty of other things out there like iOS Notes app, Evernote, Omnifocus, etc. Right now, the free version of Wunderlist is suitable for what I need. For example, I have a Perspective Podcast category. Here I’ll store an ongoing list with subtasks that contain episode ideas which I can also add notes and dates to. I love that I can add to it on the go when I’m not on my laptop. Other ways I use Wunderlist are to track a list of maintenance tasks I need to do on my website. I even have a shared list with my wife for things to get at the store because I’m always forgetting shit and lose everything I put on Post-Its. It’s too easy to forget these things but a Task Manager App never forgets. Use Siri (or alternative mobile assistant) If I’m on the go and  I can’t draw or write my idea, I turn to my homegirl Siri on my iPhone. I tell her to “set reminder in X hours for me to write down or draw this specific idea.” Sometimes she will butcher my idea but gets it close enough to spark the memory for me to collect it. An example I recently had was, “Remind me in an hour to draw pizza on a skull.” She came back with, “Remind me in an hour to drop pizza in schools.” Why the hell would I intentionally drop my pizza? She obviously doesn’t know me that well. Regardless, she is pretty helpful most of the time so I’ll give her a break. Aqua Notes Finally, I get some of my best ideas in the shower…. I’m usually listening to a podcast or audiobook through my Bluetooth Speaker when inspiration strikes. It just so happens that I have Aqua Notes in my shower to “never let another idea go down the drain.” Cheesy tagline but damn it’s the truth. I’m able to make a quick sketch or write a note and then transfer it to my sketchbook or Wunderlist. Collect & Build Your Gold Reserve To be honest, there’s really no excuse to why you can’t battle creative block by collecting your ideas and building a gold reserve. In episode 26, Efdot gave some great ways to stay inspired, and now you have practical ways to collect and store those ideas for a rainy day. If you’re taking your work seriously, I would recommend utilizing these 4 tactics in your game asap. Especially carrying a sketchbook with you at all times, that’s mandatory. Collecting your ideas and building a reserve will help you spend less time thinking and more time creating when it’s time to throw down. Key Takeaways A pocket-sized sketchbook lets you jot down a thumbnail sketch or write an idea on the fly. A task manager app can help you track more thorough lists of ideas through desktop or mobile. Use Siri or other mobile assistance for when you’re on the go and can’t use a sketchbook or task manager app. Use aqua notes for when inspiration strikes in the shower. Collecting your ideas and building a reserve will help you spend less time thinking and more time creating. Shownotes Field Notes Tinlun Studio Cuttink Studio Wunderlist Bluetooth Speaker Aqua Notes
