CloudApp, an instant video and image sharing platform for companies, had 25 employees at the time, all of whom juggled many tasks; Sophia explains how they handled setting up a channel when they didn't even have a dedicated marketing team. Discover the steps and processes CloudApp went through and the tips they offer, based on their experiences: What does partnering look like to you? For example, are you going to share your revenue? Are you going to sell your solution through a reseller or a distributor? Are you going to offer volume-based discounts or any discounts on your product? The noise in the room you’re in or the feedback caused by your speakers audio can make the communication less effective. -Learn how to mute other people in meetings (and don’t take offense when you do get muted). -Figure out tech workarounds for when your wifi inevitably goes on the fritz (call people in, turn off video to reduce wifi strain, etc). File Management Tips: -Establish a naming convention with your team, so that all your shared files are consistent, searchable and organized. All of our projects have two-word codenames and numbers that make it easy to identify them regardless of the final title of the video. When making recordings or video files, we use incremental numbering (e.g. “Audio 1”, “Audio 2”, etc). NEVER use the word “final” or “last” for naming a file! -If everybody is working with a file syncing app like Dropbox, make sure to set appropriate editing rights to your files. You want at least a shared folder that anyone on your team can edit and add stuff to, but some files need to be managed by fewer people to avoid unwanted deletions. For example, we have a folder in which everyone can add/modify/delete files, but only one person is in charge of deleting and cleaning up after everything important has been archived. -If there’s a particular task that is repetitive and can be done by different people, make sure to write down the steps in detail so that nothing is missed or forgotten. Tools For Giving Feedback -Screenshots: In OSX, use command-shift-4 to take a screenshot. On Windows 10, you can use the Windows Ink Workspace right in the task bar, which lets you crop and annotate your screenshot. -CloudApp(www.getcloudapp.com): Captures and shares screenshots (and more) via shareable links -Jing (www.techsmith.com/jing-tool.html): Lets you create screenshots and auto-generates a shareable link for each one. -Epic Pen (epic-pen.com): Great free tool for PCs for drawing on your screen (esp when sharing that screen with someone else) Other Work From Home Tips: -Add things like “time to eat lunch” on your calendar if you need it, or you may end up eating lunch at 3pm. -Keep track of your time! If you don’t keep track of the amount of time you spend working, you might overwork yourself (bad) and still feel like you’re not doing enough (worse). Toggl (www.toggl.com) is a great tool for that. -Consider coworking with a group of (nonwork) friends over Skype or Discord. It can help you get into “work mode” and make you feel a little less lonely while working.

I met today’s guest, Kronda, online a couple of weeks ago. She had reached out to me because we use a lot of the same tools and philosophy and said “we just have to meet!” Almost immediately after we got on a zoom call, I knew I wanted to have her be a guest on the podcast. Kronda is a web developer turned marketer. She helps service based business owners learn to use content marketing to sell their services. Kronda and I share the same root in our business journey because we were both developers. I transitioned to integration and systems. Kronda shifted her focus to content. It’s so neat how we both started in the same place, but ended up in different places. Nobody’s business is a straight line from “I want to start a business” to “I’m doing what I love and providing my audience exactly what they need.” Kronda’s journey: Developing WordPress websites for clients. Maintenance of websites (to try to create recurring income.) Niche down to marketing focused websites (because there her clients would understand how to market the website!) Content marketing, training and instruction. The evolution came about as she realized that the websites she had built for her clients weren’t actually helping their businesses! Simply because they didn’t know how to use their website as a marketing tool! “Content marketing is huge right now! It’s basically television!” Kronda explains, “you watch television because it’s entertaining, but people make television to sell you stuff. That’s really all we are doing just in a different medium and on a different scale.” About 3 months ago, Kronda transitioned into teaching content marketing to business owners. It’s a winning business model for her. Not only does she remain in the digital space, using the knowledge that she has acquired to help others, but she works with business owners who are engaged and want to learn. They WANT to understand it even if they are going to hire it out. I can totally relate to this… When I put systems in place for my clients within a project, I am creating a blueprint for them to use again in the future. It’s not a once and done solution. A lot of people KNOW they should be creating content (text, video, images) for their business. The problem is they don’t know what to create and having a strategy behind their content. This is where Kronda gives them a framework that is based on their customer journey. It’s so important that business owners realize that their customers are 100% on a journey. This journey consists of not knowing about them becoming aware of them discovering their problem discovering the solution to the problem purchasing. So now that you know that information, it makes content creation easier because you can see what people need to learn about your business in each stage of this journey. A great way to think about creating content is, as Kronda suggests, think about what mistakes your market is making... When she thinks about the mistakes people are making and what’s keeping them up at night it gives her plenty to write about. As business owners we tend to talk about the things we know about. But what we actually need to be doing is talk about what our future clients need to know. In the end you are selling something that is solving their problem. What you do and how you do it are less important than “Are you going to solve my problem?” It’s all about putting your target market in the center of a bullseye and focusing on what they NEED rather than the what and the how. Even though Kronda has transitioned into content marketing she still advocates for certain tools because the content still has to reach people somehow! And while our content distribution channels are varied, at the core, Kronda and I believe that your website is at the core. As I mentioned in the conversation, Kronda and I have developed a very similar WordPress tech stack… we both page builders, themes and plugins we like because these are the things that we have found to make it the easiest to get content out into the world. Kronda made a significant pivot in the way she makes her income. But did not make a pivot in the way she provides value. I know there are a lot of listeners on their own journeys and making their own pivots in their business. You shouldn’t throw everything away when you make a pivot. You can pivot and still provide value in the same area of expertise! "When we are creating content, we aren’t just creating it for today. We are creating it for our future self as well.” -Jaime Slutzky" "I want to be able to answer virtually any question with a link." -Kronda Adair" There are so many ways to tackle online business. Kronda’s pagebuilder of choice is Beaver Builder. Her landing page builder has of choice is Thrive Architect. I use Beaver Builder for both websites and landing pages solely because I want to have fewer tools. There are so many conversion tools available with Thrive Architect that allow Kronda to test different pages. I was curious to know how she came to these tools… short answer, Facebook groups and online communities! Beaver Builder is one of the first tools that she used that actually worked and was easy to use. It’s also easy to teach people to use. The great thing about Beaver Builder and Thrive Architect is that if you decide to switch to something else it leaves you the html that is very portable to take somewhere else. I just want to take a second to explain what we mean by shortcodes versus html... Whenever you uninstall the Beaver Builder and Thrive Architect all the content that you have added in to your site defaults back to normal, readable html not broken shortcodes. These plugins are modular and don’t leave a nasty footprint of having to go in and do cleanup on your code. Another program I know that often has messy clean up involved is Google docs. When you are writing something in Google docs and you copy and paste it into WordPress it’s actually copying extra html markup which doesn’t usually cause a problem but it’s not the best thing either. This is just an example of something I have noticed because I am on the back end of stuff. I’m sharing this because when your developer gives you a piece of advice we aren’t giving it to you just on aesthetic reasons alone. Kronda has lots of articles about these exact subjects. Another article she has is about premium plugins. We discussed the benefits of premium versus free plugins and how we tackle who purchases what and why! One thing she was adamant about was educating her clients on were the things that their site runs on. She would make sure they knew what was making their site run and that if they parted ways what things were going to become the client’s responsibility. So that it’s not a shock for them if they part ways and they are now responsible for the plugin payments. When you buy a premium plugin, you are buying because you are paying people to support the product, to keep it running, to keep developing, to keep the bugs out, to make it better, and to ultimately make your site work better and do more for you. These premium plugins give you access to a team a developers that are creating a really good product rather than hiring a single developer to do what you need TODAY. Tomorrow you may need something different. We could have spent a lot longer going deeper on WordPress, but that doesn’t benefit you, the listener (reader!) So we switched topics to touch on a few other facets of content creation that are relevant! First: File Organization Kronda believes organization is so important. She has a video solely on organizing your files. If you think about when you go to create content or go to use it and it takes you 5-10 minutes to locate it -- you have just wasted precious time. Using a program like Dropbox or Google Drive allows you to create an organized system of where you can keep your files and you know where they are. This allows you, or your VA, to put their hands on these files whenever you need to. Second: Video Creation Kronda uses ScreenFlow for making screen casts of things that she is doing on her laptop and she wants to show how she does a particular process. Loom and CloudApp also do this things if you don’t have a Mac. Evernote, Google Docs, and Bear are great for text. She uses a Blue Yeti Mic for podcasts. But she also encourages people not to get too caught up in the tools especially in the beginning. It’s more important in the beginning that you are actually creating the content. You can grow into getting as fancy as you want with tools. But there are alot of tools of there that are free and easy to use when you are just starting out. And finally… my two cents :) The WordPress editor makes it easy to do elegant text formatting (using either the classic editor or gutenberg, the new editor). Take advantage of the bold, italic, underline, blockquote and headings buttons… They are very simple to use and make things easier for your consumer to read. No matter where you are in your business, tt’s worth spending time just making your text more enjoyable for your consumer to read… if they enjoy reading it they are going to share, comment, and interact with you. Das Spotlight ist heute auf unserem Bordmechaniker, der eigentlich Video- und Screencastproduzent ist und endlich mal über seine Workflows sprechen darf. Lieber Fluggast, wenn dir das Gehörte gefällt oder dir Sorgenfalten auf die edle Stirn fabriziert, dann haben wir etwas für dich: iTunes Bewertungen. Patrick entspannt derzeit seine Handgelenke vom ständigen Steuerknüppel-Umklammern und versucht am Großglockner, bei unseren Österreichischen Freunden, ein Keyboard Maestro Marco zu installieren — der alte Cliffhanger! Wie sich rausstellt war das eine ziemlich schlechte Idee, denn nun tanzen Andreas und Sven auf dem Cockpit-Tisch. Wie turbulent so etwas werden kann merkt man schon daran, dass die beiden ernsthaft glauben im Cockpit gäbe es ein Tisch. Überbleibsel Backup und Backups Backup-Strategien scheinen beinahe so brisant zu sein wie Photo Management. Zumindest, wenn man das Feedback zu den jeweilgen Episoden anschaut. Viel Lob gab es, aber auch Kritik. Natürlich ist nur ein Backup auf dem NAS nicht aussreichend und natürlich können einzelne Backups korrupt sein, so dass sie sich nicht mehr zum Wiederherstellen nutzen lassen. Der erfahrene Pilot rät zur stichprobenartigen Inspektion. Genau deshalb haben wir ja auch von Backups (plural) und nicht von Backup (singular) gesprochen. Nicht nur grammatikalisch, sondern auch strategisch ein entscheidender Unterschied. Patrick hat eine klassische Bergpanorama-Postkarte mit Briefmarke und Stempel geschickt auf der er nochmals seine eigene Vertrauenshierachie für Backups als Schüttelreim zusammenfasst: Festplattenbackups (Archiv) NAS Backup (“Schnellzugriff Archiv”) Offsite und TimeMachine Das mit dem Dichten sollte er lassen, aber bei Backups weiß’a Bescheid, der Bur! 2015er Backblaze Harddisk Report Unter den Business Class Gästen des besten Deutschsprachigen Tech-Podcast befinden sich ja bekanntlich das Who-Is-Who der internationalen Firmenlenker. Etwas enttäuscht waren wir deshalb, dass Backblaze nicht wie geplant ihren druckfrischen jährlichen Report zur Verlässlichkeit von Backup-Festplatten pünktlich zur letzten Folge veröffentlich haben. Dafür ist der 2015er Report jetzt verfügbar. Die Erkenntnisse und Ergebnisse unterscheiden sich allerdings nur marginal von denen aus 2014. Sparse Bundles, Verschlüsselungen und Dropbox Hörer Marcus Stößel hat uns umfassendes Feedback und Fragen geliefert was Verschlüsselungen von Backups, der Dropbox mit Boxcryptor und den daraus resultierenden Folgen anbelangt (und noch einiges mehr). Da haben wir uns erstmal riesig gefreut um dann aber festgestellt, dass wir in der kürze der Zeit hier keine adäquaten Antworten geben können. Zwar referriert Andreas kurz über das Für, Wieder und Wie der Sparse Bundles, abschließend können wir das aber nur mit Hilfe der Wissenschaftsredaktion des Übercasts behandeln. Nicht aufgehoben, nur aufgeschoben. Überschallneuigkeiten KirbyDrop Schon wieder ein Kind, wenn auch ein indirektes, ehemaliger Übercast-Gäste: KirbyDrop schickt sich an mit Hilfe von Dropshare (#UC012) und Kirby (#UC025) eine echte, selbst-gehostete Alternative zu Diensten wie Droplr und CloudApp zu werden. Letztere scheinen monatlich teuerer und komplizierter zu werden. Mit ein paar KirbyDrop Features mehr, die bereits in der Planung sind, ist man bald sein eigner Wolken-Meister. Apple Watch als Haustürschlüssel Andreas ist seit dieser Sendung Zuhause ausgesperrt. Besucht ihn mal auf Stuttgart’s Straßen und schenkt ihm einen iTunes Gutschein oder zwei. Wie er dahin gekommen ist? Nein, kein Ende seiner Hausbesetzung, kein Mietrückstand und kein Eigenbedarf: Andreas hat schlichtweg immer noch keine Apple Watch und nachdem ganz Stuttgart auf Apple Watch gesteuerte Haustürschlösser umgestellt wurde, war es das eben für den Guten. Spaß beiseite, die NFC- und Bluetoothfähigkeiten der Apple Watch werden so einige Vorgänge in der Zukunft vereinfachen, z.B. das Öffnen der Haustür. Mit dem Smart Lock inkl. Apple Watch Unterstützung von August kann man das machen, muss man aber nicht. Pebble Time jetzt offiziell in Deutschland Wenn euch das Öffnen von Haustürschlössern und auch die Apple Watch nicht so wichtig sind, dann gibt es die ebenfalls gehypte Alternative ab sofort direkt in Deutschland käuflich erstehen: Die Pepple Time. Andreas’ Video und Screencasting Workflows Der Bord-Trolley mit sämtlichen Getränken steht in der Mitte des Cockpits (als Tischersatz) und auf Patrick’s verwaisten Platz haben Andreas und Sven einen riesigen Stoffhund gestellt: Andreas ist heute nämlich nicht nur Crew-Mitglied, sondern auch Gast. Doppelte Belastung, halbe Entlohnung – versteht sich! Auch wenn es kaum menschenmöglich erscheint, aber Andreas macht tatsächlich noch einen Vollzeit-Job neben dem Übercast: Mit zCasting3000 mischt er kräftig in der “Produkt-, Erklärvideo und Screencasting”-Branche mit. Da will Sven natürlich die berühmten Details wissen. Klare Prioritäten Podcaster, Video-Produzent, Barcamper, meditierender Vegetarier, … Andreas ist ohne Frage ein Tausendsassa. Da muss nicht nur Übersicht, sondern auch Prioritäten her. In seiner eignen Planung, die sich an den Flughöhen von GTD® (Getting Things Done) orientiert — endlich können die Himmelsstürmer mal im Flieger-Kauderwelsch fachsimplen — behält Andreas den Überblick und seine Ziele im Auge. Jedenfalls meistens. Video Editing Ohne Umschweife direkt zum Kern von Andreas’ Workflow. In Sachen Video Editing ist der Einstieg für den Interessierten gar nicht so schwierig: iMovie kommt mit jedem Mac und iOS Gerät frei Haus. Und schlecht ist es auch nicht, attestiert Andreas. Man kann damit recht gut die ersten Schritte machen. Danach gibt es dann im wesentlich nur die Wahl zwischen Apple’s Final Cut Pro X und Adobe’s umfassender Video Suite mit dem Ankerpunkt Premiere Pro. Dieser musste sich auch Andreas stellen und hat sich für Apple’s Paket entschieden. In Sachen Funktionen unterscheiden sich die beiden Programmpakete nur marginal, natürlich ist Konzept und Philosophie der Applikationen unterschiedlich, aber am weitesten geht die Schere beim kommerziellen Modell auseinander: Apple bietet Festpreis und Adobe macht es per Abo. Letzteres war ein entscheidender Punkt für Andreas, der sich nicht langfristig über ein Abonnement binden wollte. Screen Recording Auch hier gibt es Wettbewerb und somit eine Auswahl: ScreenFlow ist vielleicht ein bisschen so etwas wie der Platzhirsch, der aus Sicht von Andreas in den letzten Jahren aber etwas nachgelassen hat. Doch auch Camtasia hat sich gemausert und bietet heute durchaus Vergleichbares. Was Andreas super findet ist, dass man mit beiden im Grunde den kompletten Workflow, teilweise sogar über den Screencast hinaus, abbilden kann. Somit stellen beide Programme Mini-Alternativen zu den großen Video Editoren da. Zumindest für den kleinen Schnitt zwischendurch, meint Andreas. → Andreas’s Review von ScreenFlow 5 Claquette wiederum begeistert unseren Schnippler auch, bietet aber eben wirklich nur den reinen “Screen Recording”-Teil des Workflows ab, dies aber durchaus beeindruckend. Somit eine gute Komponente wenn man schon einen der großen Video-Editor-Brocken am Start hat. Motion Design Schicker Name, dreht sich aber im wesentlichen um Animationen, Effekte und so banale Dinge wie Texteinblendungen, die während der Post-Produktion dem bewegten Bild hinzugefügt werden. Auch hier kämpfen die Kolosse Apple und Adobe mit ihren jeweiligen Lösungen um den Platz im Dock des geneigten Videokünstlers: Motion 5 gegen After Effects. Aus bereits bekannten Gründen ist zCasting3000 hier auch mit der Apple Lösung Motion unterwegs. Die Integrationstiefe der jeweiligen Lösungspakete von Adobe und Apple machen eine Kombination von Programmen verschiedner Hersteller zwar nicht undenkbar, aber denkbar kompliziert. Story Telling Wie einfach alles wäre, wären da nicht immer diese “Kunden”. Natürlich können Entwickler, Produktmanager oder Prozessverantwortliche nicht genau sagen, was für ein Video sie gerne hätten. Es ist ja nunmal nicht ihr Job Videos zu erstellen. Andreas hat oft festgestellt, dass Kunden gerne Beispielvideos zeigen, was sehr hilfreich ist, meist aber entweder Inhalt oder Optik, selten aber beides illustriert. Der Prozess des Story Tellings (Ziele mit Kunden abstecken, Storyboard erstellen, Script schreiben, Unterschrift, erst dann die Produktion starten) ist für Andreas deshalb ein adäquates Mittel um in einem iterativen Prozess sich den Vorstellung des Kunden anzunähern. Um diese Annäherung visuell zu begleiten ist für Andreas Keynote die Waffe der Wahl. In der Tat hilft Keynote nicht nur beim Präsentieren sondern — Land auf, Land ab — eben auch beim Erstellen von Prototypen. Egal, ob nun von Videos oder Applikationen. Grossartiges Beispiel: Keynote does Material Design Continous Integration Der nächste Schritt um den gesamten Prozess der Video Produktion in engere und iterativere Abstimmung mit dem Kunden zu bringen nennt sich Continous Integration. Früher als reine Vision abgetan da limitierte Prozessorleistungfähigkeiten lange Renderingzeiten für Videos nach sich zogen, ist man mit modernen MacBook Pros heute schon ziemlich nah dran. Wie nahe haben Andreas und Team in einem ihrer letzten zCasting3000 Blog Posts erläutert. Workflow Speed Dating Jetzt wird es schnell, informativ und zum Teil auch lustig. Andreas stellt sich den investigativ-journalistischen Fragen von Sven, der damit schon so manches Großkaliber ins Schwanken gebracht hat. Wacker und wendig schlängelt sich Andreas durch den verbalen Hindernisparkour. Deine älteste, installierte App? Als alter Minecraft “Künstler” (modernes Wort für Zocker) hat Andreas natürlich ein Lieblings Mod, nämlich Feed The Beast installiert Welche App fehlt (Dir) noch? StackSocial Beschreibung der Lifetime Subscription Lebenslänglich glücklich und mit Pro Features versorgt ist er nun aber nicht mehr. Zwar hat er sein Logo reingehauen und noch auf das dunkle Theme umgeschwenkt, aber ändern kann er das nun nicht mehr… alles ist ausgegraut. Festzuhalten bleibt wie letztens schon besprochen, dass CloudApp nur noch 10 kostenlose Drops pro Monat macht. Der Konkurrent Droplr hat auch was neu gemacht… er bietet unendlich viele Drops in der kostenlosen Variante, aber die werden nach 7 Tagen gelöscht. Kurz, die Zeit der Selbstversorgung mit Dropshare ist angebrochen – eh eine super App und mehr darüber könnt ihr in unserer Episode mit dem Entwickler Timo Josten nachhören. Cloud Gallery Cloud Gallery – Photo Manager für Dropbox, Google Drive, Facebook und Flickr Als Überbleibsel zu unserem zweitem Flug bzw. noch präziser gesagt als Follow-Up zu Unbound lässt nun Andreas seinem Unmut freien Lauf. Tot slot heeft Maarten een iPhone-app waarmee je Polaroid-achtige foto's kan maken: ShakeItPhoto en als tweede tip een CRM-plugin voor Gmail: Rapportive. Deze plugin vervangt de reclame aan de rechterkant in je Gmail door allerhande informatie over de persoon met wie je emailt (Twitterprofiel, Facebookprofiel, beroep, ...)
