Holly interviews the GPS Girl, Karen Jacobsen whose everyday mindfulness practice included started doing yoga and meditation some twenty years ago. She became frustrated with herself because her meditation practice was very sporadic. Like so many, she believed that meditation had to be very strictly followed in order to be effective, but what she realized is that it was more about making the commitment to meditate, rather than making it a restrictive practice. She became very interested in transcendental meditation. Last year she took a course and has been doing meditation twice a day ever since. Questions Holly and Karen explore: How does this inform your creative endeavors? How can this help us choose differently in how we deal with our experiences? How can you put well being above all other priorities? How does the way we phrase descriptions of our experience affect our reality? Karen shares that sleep is very important - optimal rest is essential for well being. Meditation fills her well and adds to her ability to be present and notice when she’s going off course. She also believes that meditation allows for the full feeling of human emotion.  Choosing the way you recalculate relationship with time, creates powerful change in how we can look at life and its priorities. There’s a good chance you’ve already had some advice from our guest this week… it’s just you didn’t know it. Karen Jacobsen is the famous voice of Apple’s SIRI app as well as the voice of 400 million Sat Nav devices around the world, but here she is today, live and fully dangerous! As well as her massive success as a voiceover artist, Karen has written a self-help book called “It’s Never Too Late To Recalculate” which uses the instructions on a Sat Nav as a metaphor for how people can change direction in their own life. We had a very interesting chat with Karen – she’s certainly had one heck of a life. Karen was kind enough to share with us some top tips from her book as well as some other advice on how to stay well and live a happy life: ** Notice when you’re “off route”. If you’re not honest enough with yourself to acknowledge that there is something fundamentally wrong, it is impossible to change direction. ** Get clear about what you love to spend your time doing. Have that conversation with yourself and focus your everyday life towards doing it. ** At the end of the year, do a “stock take” of your life, i.e. what you accomplished, what you wished you accomplished and what the disappointments were. Then create a list of what you want to do in the subsequent year. Then display this list in a prominent position at home so it can serve as a reminder and keep you focused on the right stuff. ** Try and be around likeminded people who are getting somewhere in life. Being part of some kind of mastermind group can be a great help. ** Don’t wait until you hit rock bottom before making changes. It’s easier to make small changes as you go than to take extreme action in a crisis.   In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** The 5 steps to recalculate formula ** How to listen to your inner GPS ** How to hear yourself think ** The benefits of meditation   Resources mentioned in this episode: ** The SMEA has teamed up with Action Coach to deliver over 50 free business coaching workshops across Australia. Go to http:smallbizsept.com.au and find your nearest workshop. And as an extra bonus, any attendee of the workshop will get free membership to the SMEA for a year worth 400 AUD. ** Karen’s website: http://www.thegpsgirl.com ** Karen’s twitter: https://twitter.com/thegpsgirl ** Ben’s Daily Business Tips: http://www.dbtpodcast.com ** Facebook: facebook.com/businessbrainfood ** Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood ** Twitter: https://twitter.com/bfewtrell ** ActionCOACH: http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes ** ActionCOACH: http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher “It’s never too late to recalculate” says Karen, so if you feel like you’re just going through the motions in your business, follow Karen’s lead and change direction. This Friedman Seminar features Karen Jacobsen, presenting a talk titled "Understanding Urban Settings – Developing an Information Toolkit for Humanitarian Agencies through Academic-Practitioner Partnerships." This seminar was originally held on 3/16/2016. ABSTRACT: Humanitarian crises and forced displacement are increasingly played out in urban settings, as evident in the Syrian crisis. The humanitarian response has been slow to adapt to urban settings. New types of programming are being tried out, but humanitarian agencies lack information gathering tools that help them understand the urban context in which they work. A key aspect of the Feinstein Center’s work is to help humanitarian, government and donor organizations understand and respond to new problems. This presentation shows how this process is unfolds, drawing on experience from a current partnership in the Syrian region. The partnership’s goal is to operationalize what is known as an “urban area-based approach” by creating a methodology – a conceptual framework and an information toolkit - for use in urban areas affected by humanitarian crises and displacement. BIO: Karen Jacobsen is Acting Director at the Feinstein International Center where she also leads the Refugees and Forced Migration Program, and Associate Professor of Research at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University. About the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy: The Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University is the only independent school of nutrition in the United States. The school's eight degree programs – which focus on questions relating to nutrition and chronic diseases, molecular nutrition, agriculture and sustainability, food security, humanitarian assistance, public health nutrition, and food policy and economics – are renowned for the application of scientific research to national and international policy.

No member of the National Speakers Association speaks to as many people on a daily basis as does Karen Jacobsen. Her voice is one of the options on over 100 million GPS systems and 300 million smartphones. She's the one we hear when lose our way and the GPS tells us it is 'recalculating'. On Saturday she spoke to members of the NSA Northern California Chapter. Oh Say Can You See? Karen, a professional singer-songwriter raised in Australia and now a native of New York, began her presentation with a stunning rendition of the American national anthem -- she's sung The Star Spangled Banner in baseball stadiums across the country. She then gave the motivational speech she delivers to corporate clients, listing five 'GPS Girl' life-lessons, interspersed with her own songs: Is your inner GPS telling you that you are off your route? Are you willing to change direction? Have you clarified your destination? Are you ready to embrace the steering wheel? Accelerate! Her speaker demo reel shows some of what we enjoyed: Directions for Speaker Success Following this showcase presentation, Karen shifted gears (so to speak) and shared her insights into success in the speaking business. She helped us navigate a list of 44 directions for speaker success in business, well-being, speech delivery and quality of life. They included recommendations on everything from being sure to stay hydrated (crucial for all speakers, not just singers), eating a diet of living foods, avoiding toxins, daily meditation practice and exercise to keeping an uncluttered office, participating in a mastermind group and working with a business coach. She emphasized these are a destination to aim for, not something we achieve immediately. Taking Care of Business Here's the GPS Girl's list of business goals: I can describe the outcomes for my clients in one sentence. I have a three minute Speaker Video I am proud of. My website is updated regularly and clearly represents my brand. I am using professional photographs taken in the past 12 months. My business cards are on excellent high quality stock. My social media strategy works for me and my online and offline presence are consistent. I use Quickbooks (or an equivalent), my accounting is up-to-date and taxes are paid. I know I look well-groomed and feel confident walking into any room. I make daily phone calls as part of my marketing strategy. I save at least 10% of my income. I am earning my target revenue. These are valuable goals for any freelancer, entrepreneur or small business owner, not just those in the speaking profession.
