Flexport was a breakout success—reimagining global trade with tech at its core. But when the freight market cooled and efficiency overtook service, things started to unravel. Founder Ryan Petersen stepped aside, handing the CEO role to former Amazon exec Dave Clark. Months later, he was back at the helm.In this episode, Ryan explains what went wrong, how he's rebuilding Flexport—cutting $300M in costs, restoring customer focus—and why promoting from within beats chasing outside stars. He also weighs in on Trump's proposed tariffs and what they could mean for the future of global trade.Chapters: 00:00 Trailer00:31 Introduction02:07 Meeting smart people, seeing the world03:40 Eroded margins09:52 Charismatic and overconfident15:32 Not an overnight decision20:08 The founder has returned23:10 Redoing the hiring26:38 No substitute for passion31:00 Working for and with my brother37:28 Working with forwarders42:14 Being a founder can be lonely47:49 Life's work54:06 The right person for the job1:00:55 19 countries1:04:57 Blowing people up1:07:24 Work and being a good dad1:08:34 Not doing it for money and loving money1:17:52 Import and export tariffs1:22:57 De minimis1:25:54 Panama and the Suez Canal1:36:50 Going public1:42:24 Who Flexport is Hiring 1:42:42 What "grit" means to Ryan1:43:06 OutroMentioned in this episode: Founders Fund, Amazon, Toyota Motor Corporation, Slack, Brex, Pedro Franceschi, Henrique Dubugras, United States Customs and Border Protection, ImportGenius, Michael Kanko, Y Combinator, Paul Graham, Intel Corporation, Shopify, Geely Holding (Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd.), The Volvo Group, Intuit TurboTax, David Petersen, BuildZoom, TechCrunch, Google, Figma, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Jimmy Carter, Panama Canal Authority, United States Navy, Coinbase, Uber, AirbnbLinks:Connect with RyanXLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.comLearn more about Kleiner Perkins

In this laid-back and cozy episode of The Book Fix, Yajaira and Cheli take a break from book reviews to bring listeners behind the scenes as they redo their podcast background. With the sound of book pages ripping and foam brushes against clear glue, things quickly turn into accidental ASMR—and the girls are here for it.As they work, they dive into a heartwarming (and hilarious) conversation about their favorite comfort shows and games. Cheli shares her love for the Psychonauts games, while Yajaira holds it down for the Supernatural fandom. The episode takes a sentimental turn as they reflect on their 13-year friendship—how it's evolved, the bumps along the way, and how they've grown into besties who now can't go a day without chatting. Of course, no episode is complete without book talk! Cheli sneaks in yet another gush session about Powerless by Lauren Roberts (Yajaira saw it coming), and the duo chats about the growth of their podcast. Support the showOur Linktree: https://linktr.ee/thebookfix?utm_source=linktree_admin_sharebecome our Patron ♡ https://www.patreon.com/BookFixbuy us a book ♡ https://www.buymeacoffee.com/thebookfixBusiness Inquiries: thebookfixpodcast@gmail.comfollow us on Tiktok! ♡ https://www.tiktok.com/@thebookfix

We Are, Marketing Happy - A Healthcare Marketing Podcast

If you a marketing leader or a member of a marketing team that is beginning the process of tackling a website rebuild, this episode is for you! Jenny shares five essential steps to focus on before you dig into the desired design of the website:   Centering your “why”: Understand why your website exists. Identify your primary, secondary, and tertiary audiences (e.g., patients, HR/recruiting, foundation) and define your calls to action. Get tech savvy: Explore how current technologies can help streamline processes. Brainstorm new opportunities, like embedding a scheduling tool into service pages. Design site architecture: Create a sitemap. Review current analytics to see what content works, what doesn't, and identify content gaps. Layer on SEO strategy: Ensure your website is easy for search engines to index. Pay attention to technical requirements and make sure the content flows well to rank better. Develop a measurement plan: Decide how you will measure success, ensure compliance (e.g., patient privacy for analytics), and streamline reporting. After these steps, you can move on to wireframing and designing, either with your internal team or a third-party vendor.   Connect with Jenny: Email: jenny@hedyandhopp.com  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennybristow/   If you enjoyed this episode we'd love to hear your feedback! If you're going to write about the Oregon Trail or the Mississippi flatboat era, why not go gonzo? Does it make for better history or just better bar stories? What can you really learn about change by recreating epic journeys in contemporary times, and what can that teach us about how we live upon this planet? Today, adventurer and author Rinker Buck is on the show to discuss his odysseys. In particular, his flatboat ride from Pittsburgh to New Orleans, and his mulecart passage of the entire Oregon Trail. If you're gasping reading that last sentence, you need to read his books. Obviously, these landscapes have massively changed over the centuries, and their environmental history reflects human wants and desires, some good and others less so. How are they shadows of their former selves, which could you not tell which century you're currently in, and which are making beautiful comebacks? What does it teach us about the country so many of our listeners call home? How does the American experience prepare or fail to prepare us for a climate-changed world? Rinker discusses his particular approach to participatory history, why he doesn't like reenactment as a paradigm, and why he bothers with the Heraclean effort for which some might deem him a "conquistador of the useless." Tune in and learn from Rinker's hard-earned experience and observations! Check it out below: Braedon Hebert (00:00:00) - So part of our technology will automatically download all those all those types of utility invoices then extract the data. So to eliminate any sort of data entry required then it can be approved and paid.   Intro (00:00:15) - Welcome to the how to Scale Commercial Real Estate show. Whether you are an active or passive investor, we'll teach you how to scale your real estate investing business into something big.   Sam Wilson (00:00:28) - Braden Hebert is the co-founder of Condo Works, which is an accounts payable automation platform built for property management companies. Braden is also an accountant turned entrepreneur. Braden, welcome to the show.   Braedon Hebert (00:00:40) - Yes. Thanks, Sam. Glad to be here.   Sam Wilson (00:00:42) - Absolutely. The pleasure is mine. Braden. There are three questions I ask every guest who comes on the show in 90s or less. Can you tell me where did you start? Where are you now? And how did you get there?   Braedon Hebert (00:00:52) - So as you alluded to, my I got my start as an accountant working for one of the big accounting firms, then went to a big company. But I entered the the startup and tech world about a decade ago in that role.   Braedon Hebert (00:01:05) - And that's where I met my current co-founder, who's the who was the chief technology officer of that first company. And so my path was was in the startup tech world in those finance roles. I went through some acquisition acquisitions throughout that, but wanted to take the leap into the the early stage incubation stage of a company and joined him as a as a co-founder of Condor Works.   Sam Wilson (00:01:33) - That's really cool. What is the what is the opportunity that you guys see? I guess you know, one, the startup tech world is highly competitive. And, you know, I can't imagine jumping into that. That's something that kudos to you guys, you know, for being willing to take those those risks I think that's really cool. But what's the opportunity that you guys see in what you're doing right now. And why is now the time to do it?   Braedon Hebert (00:01:58) - So maybe I'll go back to the to the very beginning. So one of the things that my, my co-founder did, in addition to helping build and develop companies, is he also became the treasurer on his condo board.   Braedon Hebert (00:02:10) - And that's where he saw firsthand some of the the challenges that face property management companies when it comes to processing and paying their bills. So there's there's a high invoice volume. There's multiple stakeholders plus complexity, not from the accounting side, but operationally, if you're trying to keep track of discrete financial records across all of your properties, the the accuracy and routing and recording of those invoices is critical. But but complex because paired with those challenges, it's also an industry that has been slower to adopt some of the more modern technological solutions. And so, for example, he was signing hundreds of checks every month. He was seeing vendors taking six months to get paid. And, you know, when you calculate the internal cost to the property management companies, it can cost 15 to $20 per per invoice just to pay that. So he said, well, this is awful. Ben being the tech guy he is, he said there's there must be a better way and I'm going to build it. And so that's that's how calendar works was born.   Braedon Hebert (00:03:17) - And it was. And we see that that pain that still exists across across many property management companies.   Sam Wilson (00:03:23) - Got it. No, that's really interesting. How does this differ. And forgive my ignorance here because I neither run a tech startup. I don't run a accounts payable automation platform. And um, yeah, anyway, forget what else, I don't run. But anyway, all of those being said. When it comes to accounts payable. In my mind, I think, gosh, I mean, it seems like you could just get ACH set up out of your various bank accounts, you receive your invoices, you ACH or vendors, and off you go. Why is it not so simple?   Braedon Hebert (00:03:56) - So I would I would back up. You know, paying it can sometimes be the easy part. It's it's the, the full cycle being receiving or getting the invoices than having it properly approved, entering that information into the accounting system. So recording that invoice and then and then issuing payment. So you know our platform handles that end to end with with tech and automation built in throughout that process.   Braedon Hebert (00:04:26) - So I'll you know, one of our my favorite examples is is a utility bill. So you know, gas power, water even, you know, the telecom bills. Um, either they're they're coming in the mail a couple of weeks later, then you're rushing to pay them, or someone has to spend time logging in and clicking, downloading, download, invoice, download, invoice downloading. So we we know some of our customers were spending days just doing that. So part of our technology will automatically download all those all those types of utility invoices then extract the data. So to eliminate any sort of data entry required then it can be approved and paid. And so a lot of that upfront work in terms of just handling the invoices can be eliminated, which once you get to a certain scale, you know, some some of our customers are processing thousands, 10,000 invoices a month. And so that that can really add up, uh, across the team.   Sam Wilson (00:05:26) - And the opportunity for.   Sam Wilson (00:05:29) - Error.   Sam Wilson (00:05:30) - I mean, just becomes magnified where it's like, did we get that utility invoice that's emailed, actually paid, and did it get logged properly? And we're counting on, which is just crazy in 2023, we're still counting on human touch on some of those things where it's like.   Sam Wilson (00:05:48) - And so no, I see what you're saying. And that makes a lot of sense, especially for property management companies that are handling, like you said, you know, thousands potentially of invoices a month and going, gosh, is this is this being properly logged? I mean, even for us at just the handful of facilities that we own it, we're trying to put those processes in place where it's like, hey, this is. The is that paid this month, I don't know. So there are some similar meetings we were having just recently were like, is that okay? No, this needs to be a system like very, very tight knit system. Maybe we're not saying.   Braedon Hebert (00:06:16) - Hey Sam, our lights went out. What happened? Oh, shoot. That that invoice that I guess we didn't get it didn't forgot to pay it. And. Yeah, that's the worst that can happen.   Sam Wilson (00:06:27) - Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. You get a disconnect notice and you're like, how do we. And which we haven't had a disconnect notice.   Sam Wilson (00:06:33) - But I'm just thinking worst case like you're saying like lights went out or you get a disconnect. How is this happening. And I can see.   Braedon Hebert (00:06:38) - How it happens. That was a theoretical example of course.   Sam Wilson (00:06:41) - Right, right. Luckily it has not happened to us. But that is I mean, I could see it very easily happening accidentally or it's like we don't know how we missed that. So that's that's really cool. Can you tell me we talked about this a little bit before we kicked off the show? You use the word condo more broadly maybe than what I would say here in the States. Can you define really kind of the the broader scale of the product that you guys are developing in the, in the what condo means?   Braedon Hebert (00:07:09) - Yeah. So yeah, I had said our current branding gives away a bit of our origin. So maybe if I say the word aboot or process or process, I'll also give away my Canadian roots. So we got our start in Ontario. In Canada where we're condo is kind of the catch all term for a HOA or community or association.   Braedon Hebert (00:07:32) - And that's that's where we got our start. And that was the the branding and the website that was that we've been developing. But our goal more broadly is to be is to be a solution for, for all types of, of property management companies. So whether it's the condo HOA association as well as commercial residential. And I was actually looking up our customer roster. We have a senior lifestyle management company in the Tennessee area as well. So it's it's you know, the the challenges are similar. And it's from a branding. It's something that's on the on the strategic table for us. But yeah, thank thanks for bringing that up. Uh, just to be able to help. Yeah. Broaden the conversation and to help to clarify that.   Sam Wilson (00:08:18) - Right. Right. Because I mean, your product could very easily be deployed across industrial facilities or industrial property managers to multifamily property managers to, I mean, anybody that's managing a large portfolio of assets that, like you said, you know, has has an incredible accounts, payroll.   Sam Wilson (00:08:35) - Or accounts payable. Excuse me. If I could speak today, you know, invoices coming in. You need to have that product where you can reasonably take those in, make sure they get paid, and then do it again without without making sure that there's a manual process to keep track of that. So, Braden, one of the things that you said in the onboarding question, I always asked us and again, for those of you that listen, what's a fun fact or surprising view in one of the views that you put in there, Braden, was that tell me a company's tech stack, and I can tell you the growth rate. I think that's really, really interesting. What does that mean?   Braedon Hebert (00:09:08) - I. Yeah. Like the the question prompted. Trying to be a bit controversial or edgy but so we've. You know in building this company and talking to hundreds or property management companies, you start to see different patterns. And as a, as a business, it's in you know, real estate in general is often it's is quite local.   Braedon Hebert (00:09:29) - And there are, you know, there are companies that's, that's that's their focus. That's that's where they want to go. But there's others that I call it a bit. I use the term escape velocity for those that are able to, to, to build a company that expands. Into a wider geographic area. And so there's there's a, you know, in property management specifically, there's there's their startup costs, although the switching costs are low. So it's really it's relatively easy to create your own. If you're a property manager, you get four properties. You can you can exist as a standalone business. But those that obtain the escape velocity are the ones that, that, that, that have that extra is that whether it's ambition or operational excellence, to be able to, to grow and specifically think manage people is a huge part of that. Beyond, you know, beyond their local area, beyond the, the, the, the greater metropolitan areas that they ran into to, to, to to grow into a much, much bigger footprint.   Braedon Hebert (00:10:31) - Um, and so I and I the other pattern is that the, the use of technology is a common characteristic of those companies that are able to obtain that escape velocity. So operationally they have to be be sold. They the managing of people is is a huge part of that. But the being able to adapt and and effectively use with the modern technological tools that exist can really help those companies to, to, to grow at a higher rate than, than others who, who aren't necessarily doing that.   Sam Wilson (00:11:10) - I think that's a really insightful observation. It's not something I would have thought about, but what are some of the things, I guess, that as as you see those various companies that are willing to embrace technology, willing to embrace automation, like.   Sam Wilson (00:11:27) - What.   Sam Wilson (00:11:27) - Does that say about them? Because there's more to it than just, hey, I like technology and automation. There's something about their mindset. And their approach.   Braedon Hebert (00:11:37) - Is, yeah, it's not chasing the new shiny thing, but it is a it is a mindset that exists that they're thinking about how to how to improve their business.   Braedon Hebert (00:11:48) - So they're they're not chasing the, you know, every the everyday fires. They're able to elevate it and think strategically. So, you know, it's not about, hey, we're it's not just, hey, we're we have these cool tech toys. It's it's they're thinking strategically about how to just effectively manage their business. And, you know, the the tech they use is a part of that. But it is a common pattern that we've observed amongst those companies that do seem to have a have a higher growth rate than others that aren't there.   Sam Wilson (00:12:18) - Yeah. No, I think that's, that's that's really insightful. And you said not putting out fires because it takes time. I mean, it takes time to think through. Yeah. There's automations. There's there's there's technology out there. But implementing it is a discipline I think. I know at least it is for me. Maybe I'm not that bright and I'm certainly not tech savvy. And so for me, it's harder to be like, okay, how are we going to use this tool effectively in our business? And then how does it act? Or how can we structure it such that it solves problems without creating a whole pile of new ones that now is now just more work? And so I think that's but figuring those things out to where you're getting beyond the day to day, like, okay, hey, this is how this technology solves problems and saves us time and money is really, really cool.   Sam Wilson (00:13:04) - What how did how do you view that as it pertains to your business? Like what are what are you guys currently doing to use tech to establish or get that escape velocity that you need?   Braedon Hebert (00:13:19) - Yes. Yeah. It's it's. So I, we had a meeting with our or some of our investors last night and they, we're also guilty of that as well in that being able to focus on your current customers and you want to provide a good, good level of service for them and a really good experience. And that can often trump, you know, you know, Trump thinking about, okay, this is this is I need I need time to work on the business. So I was working in the business, working on the business and carving that out. And that's where one of the benefits of of having, you know, whether it's a board of advisors or your business, business groups that you may be in is is it does act as a forcing function for you to, to to think about the business and how to how to improve it.   Braedon Hebert (00:14:08) - Um, for, for tech, one of the benefits of being a tech company is that we can build a lot of our own, our own solutions, right, to help that. So we we've we got our start in in about late 2019 and we've seen it growing across Canada, United States, different different types of property management companies. But we've managed to do so and and multiply the footprint of the company without multiplying the amount of people that we need to support that customer base. And so that's that's having a discipline from a product development standpoint, not to just focus on new features or the shiny things for us are being, you know, new things for us develop. It's also being able to focus on, you know, how do we make our system as efficient. That not only helps us, but it does also help our customers in that they're they they have less, less questions. And there's there's things that make it easier for them. So it does come down to to discipline though, at the end of the day, to, to force yourself to take that step back.   Sam Wilson (00:15:10) - It is hard. It is absolutely hard. We in the in our laundry facility business, you know, we use software inside of that and it's interesting to watch and it's newer, not completely new, but they're still constantly solving problems. And there's even, you know, there's even forums where we can put in feature requests where it's like, hey, you know, we'd love to see, you know, XYZ on our point of sale or whatever, you know, whatever the the feature is. And I would think for you guys, that same thing probably is true where people are constantly saying, hey, what's, you know, can we have this feature? Can we add that? Can we add this? How do you prioritize those in what's maybe a problem that you guys are actively internally trying to solve that you haven't solved yet?   Braedon Hebert (00:15:53) - The prioritization question is is tough because everybody has their. Yeah has has. Yeah that's what they want. So you have to balance. One is is this a is this a one off for this one customer.   Braedon Hebert (00:16:08) - Some of them are are louder than others. And so you have to consider is this broadly applicable. Will feature customers find this attractive. And also you have to also wait that as to the revenue potential as well. And so we've had some of our as we've grown we've gotten bigger customers that have have have pushed us in a good way to develop the features that they, as a bigger company, need for their scale. And so that's that's been, you know, how we have prioritized those, those features and. Terms of what's on our on our roadmap. The some of the ones that I'm, I'm personally most excited about is like is to help. There's a lot of similarities and applicability be going from, you know, HOA or communities to commercial and residential. Um, there are certain nuances to, you know, outside of the HOA space that that do differ. And so it's it's there are certain features that would be very well received by certain. Potential customers that we've had conversations with in the, in the commercial space, um, for example, or even in, in rather than being third party managers, you're an asset manager where you own everything versus in the space, you're managing independent hoa's.   Braedon Hebert (00:17:39) - And so, um, being able to, to achieve that vision, the more broad of of being able to cater to property management more broadly, um, building off of that, that HOA Association condo, um, base.   Sam Wilson (00:17:54) - Got it. That's really, really cool. All right. Last and final question for you is what's something about your software or your solution maybe that I haven't asked that you would want to make sure that we cover.   Braedon Hebert (00:18:07) - Well, we spoke about the the automated utility downloading, which is is one of those eye catching features as boring as it sounds. Um, yeah. But everyone, even personally, everyone hates dealing with their utility bills. So if we can automate that, that's that's something that that people really, really enjoy. I there's if I can say to you, so what if if, if, if you're if your current operations include handling paper whether that's receiving invoices on paper, having a cabinet that you store everything in or signing, signing paper checks, you know if that can if you can envision that going away.   Braedon Hebert (00:18:53) - That's that's yeah. Especially when we talk to owners, oftentimes they're the ones who sign the checks. And it's like, okay, what happens if you go on vacation? Well, you know, I signed a bunch before I leave and then I have a huge stack when I come back. Okay. Well, you know, the the the conveyor belt doesn't have to stop running. Uh, in those, in those scenarios. Um, so that's one and I think the other one that in the larger scales is, is being able to really configure, um, who needs to approve what invoice. And so it's reducing a lot of the noise, but also automating how who needs to approve what invoice and when and enforcing that. So one, it reduces work, but also it helps enhance internal controls to make sure that invoices are being properly, properly screened. So that's that's we're getting a little deep there. But that's know that's the stuff that we care about though.   Sam Wilson (00:19:43) - Those are huge pain points that you're solving for though especially that invoice.   Sam Wilson (00:19:49) - I mean, at least that one that invoice approval speaks to me where it's like, you know, as we grow, I go, my gosh, you know, I don't want to be in front of every invoice that comes through the door and have to be the one that signs off on like, oh, yeah, okay. You know, whatever it is we're say we're. Redoing a facility the paving contractor sends there. Like, I mean, there should be a way to and again, maybe that's just a, you know, small example that doesn't doesn't apply. But I think there's you're touching on some things that everyone thinks about and is trying to figure out a way to solve. So that's very, very cool. Braden, thank you for taking the time to come on the show today. I certainly enjoyed it. It was great learning about what you guys do, how you do it, and the opportunity you guys see in the market right now. And it sounds like it's being very well received.   Sam Wilson (00:20:34) - So this has been a blast having you on today. If our listeners want to get in touch with you and learn more about you or your product, what's the best way to do that?   Braedon Hebert (00:20:41) - So our website is Conoco. So not not.com but.co. Not needing anything there, we skipped Home Depot; I figured to check the price of a 2x4x8 online, but it's not clear which product I've been viewing; it might be $3.67, but it may have dropped a lot, to $2.98. I'll have to actually go inside next time. The first stop, as usual, was Dollar Tree. No big changes were evident. The shelves all look pretty well stocked, although there is some duplication. Aldi was next and last. We found everything we wanted, which for some reason was a short list this week; perhaps because the garden is producing.  Some staple prices are: Eggs, $1.12; milk: $2.92; heavy cream: $4.69; butter: $3.19; bacon: $3.99; flour: $2.19; sugar (jumped): $3.09.  Hearing of shortages, I expected to see the 70% chocolate I like going up, but it is still $1.99 (I don't think it has ever changed that I remember); and OJ is $3.19 (that's at least a quart, but I need to recheck to be sure; it's a large glass bottle). Untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.899/gallon. That's the book that I want to read. [00:00:22] Welcome to Pause To Go, the podcast that's all about making the most of life's transitions from middle school through menopause. I'm your host, Bree Luck joining you as we embark on a journey of self-discovery. And questionable decisions. Get ready for heartfelt conversations, expert insights and personal stories that'll have you laughing, crying, and saying, thank goodness I'm not alone. [00:00:50] If you've lost your midlife crisis survival kit, we've got you covered. So join me, won't you, and together we can pause to go. [00:01:05] So we are now beginning season four of the Pause To Go podcast, and in this season I am actually going to, excuse the pun, cycle back to where we began, and that is with perimenopause and menopause and all the other midlife concerns and foibles and adventures and breakdowns and advantages throughout the season. [00:01:30] You see, I started. Pause to go talking about perimenopause and menopause because it kept coming up with my clients and in my community. And also, frankly, I had just turned 48 then, and I really, really, really wanted to have a better understanding of what the heck was going on in my body and in my brain. [00:01:51] And how I could make sense of that. And I was also really interested in exploring the societal aspects of being. For me, being a woman in midlife, I'm gonna try not to use gendered language as much in the exploration this season. I probably will sometimes, but we know that lots of people with ovaries, lots of people. [00:02:17] Who are going through menopause do not identify as women. So, There we go. So I'm gonna try to do a better job of being more representative this season in my imperfect, but what is it? Ambitious way. So, lemme go back a little bit. In the first season of Pause To Go, we had all sorts of people come on to talk about perimenopause and menopause, from sexuality to career changes to health concerns. [00:02:48] We talked about hot flashes and invisibility and how to find a spark in your relationship, and you all sent so much great feedback about it. I still get messages about those episodes and then at the end of that season, We moved on to two more seasons that we're looking at different aspects of transitions. [00:03:10] So season two was all about creative change makers, and season three was about time, and I love those seasons too. But when I send out questions or requests for topics that listeners wanna hear on social media, what I hear the most is. Hey, can you gimme more stories about perimenopause and menopause? And so here we are and I'm turning 50 this summer. [00:03:40] It's exciting. There's so much going on. My kids are both gonna be out of the house soon. My older daughter just graduated from college. My younger daughter just graduated from high school last week, and the younger daughter, it's not like she's heading to college an hour or so away. No, she's moving off to Ireland in September. [00:04:01] I mean, that's far. I live in Virginia, for those of you who don't know, and I'm really feeling this transition. Most of that is about the emotional impact of midlife transitions. I'm caught up in the family changes that are happening. I've lost some family members and friends who were very, very dear to me in the last year. [00:04:25] So I'm just acutely aware of endings and beginnings and shifting relationships and all that stuff. And speaking of which, I'm super excited because I'm gonna have a marvelous new friend of mine. Carol Michigan on to talk about how to use our language to cultivate new relationships with our adult children. [00:04:51] Like where's the manual for that y'all? Where is the what to expect when that baby grows up and has their own ideas and ventures out into the world and you're left to create a new identity while also rooting for your kid and releasing all expectations about them? That's the book that I want to read. [00:05:09] But instead, I'll host this podcast and bring on people who can help us navigate those relationships to time and self and our bodies that are shifting, and our children help us muddle through that mess. I know that we learn the most when we can attach facts or concepts to story. And so as we return to perimenopause and menopause with our midlife concerns, we will talk to experts, but we're really gonna focus on real life stories, stories of people with ovaries and uteruses who have been through or are going through perimenopause or menopause. [00:05:55] Uh, I'll tell stories. Guests will share their experiences, and I want you to share your stories too. I also. Recently took my younger daughter, the one who just graduated, and we went to see the new film based on the classic Tweenage book. Are you there? God, it's me, Margaret. I just wanna say thank you, Judy Bloom. [00:06:18] Oh gosh. I'll be honest. I really just balled the hallway through the film. I thought about my childhood best friend Margaret, and our first experiences when we got our periods. The first time we used tampons, I think it was in a department store. Oh my gosh, Margaret, I'm sorry. I won't, I won't talk about your period, but I'm so glad that we went through getting our periods together, that we went through the beginning of puberty together and all of its complications. [00:06:52] It was so important to have someone to share in our awkward adolescent way what we were going through, and so my hope is that this podcast will do the same for you because in many ways, Perimenopause is a lot like puberty. We're having all of these major hormonal shifts. The world is seeing us differently. [00:07:17] Our whole bodies and brains are earthquake and we are just trying to like hang in there and figure out who we are in this new stage. For me, doing this perimenopause, Exploration is a little bit like a chance to redo puberty, like reparenting myself, giving myself the gift of doing puberty again in the way that I would want to do it for myself. [00:07:53] And my hope is that if you're going through these massive changes, that you take some comfort in having a friend. Our friends to share your journey with. And so that's where we are. And I'm actually gonna start by telling a, a little bit of a personal experience, which is that I feel so weird. This is a recurring thing. [00:08:18] This is, this is not new that I feel weird. I generally embrace being my weird ass self, but this feeling. Of feeling like I'm different from other people in ways that are sometimes uncomfortable. It happened in puberty too, right? It's a feeling of I feel like what I'm going through is what nobody else is going through. [00:08:46] And then you get on the internet and you may find something about it, but nobody's really talking about it, right? And there are also hot buttoned things that people do talk about that get a lot of attention, which is great because it probably means that a lot of people are experiencing them. But then if you have a side effect of, let's say, perimenopause that other people don't experience, it can make you feel even more alienated. [00:09:17] For example, hot flashes are the big thing. All the jokes are about hot flashes, even though it's not really funny. It's something that we've chosen to laugh about. I mean, I get that gallows humor. I get it. I sort of feel like it's okay for people who have hot flashes to joke about hot flashes, but if you don't have hot flashes, it ain't your joke to tell because sometimes it feels like we're laughing at instead of laughing with, and that's something I'd really like to shift. [00:09:45] I digress. So many people have these hot flashes, but I don't have them. I have something else entirely. What I have are cold flashes. I get cold, I get like shivers to my spine, like I can't get warm, and it seems to happen a lot like hot flashes happen for other people. I'm still having a cycle, a menstrual cycle, and it typically happens in the eight to 10 days before menstruation begins. [00:10:17] So I get waves of being freezing cold no matter what. Actually, my wonderful stepmother, Leslie, thank you, Leslie gave me this device that I've been covering for a long, long time, which is called the Bon Charge Sauna Blanket. There's no kickback for this. I do not have an affiliate with bond charge. But I have their sauna blanket. [00:10:45] It's kind of amazing. And I get in that thing. Even now, it's summertime, so it's June, and I get in that thing and it is awesome. I love it. If you like saunas, it's a great way to get that heat at home. It's portable. You can take it with you if you're going on a road trip somewhere, and you can really get that feeling of getting warm to the core. [00:11:12] If you're a cold person like I am, you know what I mean? So I'll be in this sauna of blanket and I'll have it heated up to 164 degrees Fahrenheit, and I'll be feeling good. And then all of a sudden I'll just start shivering. I'm, I'm cold. So cold. And. It's not just nervous, shivering, it's cold, and no matter how warm the blanket is, my body just can't get warm for a little while. [00:11:43] Typically, that lasts for just a few minutes at a time. It happens in waves, but I just wanted to let you all know that because I don't know anybody else who has cold flashes. But I thought it was kind of cool. So I looked it up to see if cold flashes might be, you know, a thing. And when I was looking it up, I started to compile all of the side effects of perimenopause. [00:12:13] This is not a comprehensive list, but it's a lot. And some of them were ones that I didn't know, so take a listen. And if you are feeling any of these or experiencing any of these, just know that we will probably be covering it at some point on this podcast. And if you have. Um, menopause experience or a perimenopause experience that I have not listed here, let me know because I wanna keep adding to this list. [00:12:50] I want to add to it so that people don't feel alone. If you have. Any side effects of perimenopause. I don't want you to feel lonely in your experience. Let us get into the side effects of perimenopause, number one, irregular periods. I mean, that seems pretty obvious, right? Most people are technically in menopause. [00:13:17] At the point of 12 months after their final menstruation. So I say most people because some people have a sudden onset of menopause because of something like removal of the uterus and ovaries or some kind of trauma or medical intervention. But in general, people who menstruate go through a period of five to 10 years when our periods get irregular. [00:13:43] It can be as much as 15. I don't wanna scare you, and I'm sure some people are under five, but in general, we're looking at five to 10 years. When we are experiencing some irregularity in our periods now, I used to think that that meant that our periods just sort of got further and further apart, but for some people it doesn't have to mean that some people have heavier periods or more frequent periods. [00:14:09] For a while, I had a period that lasted for 28 days during a time of really high stress, and then it completely went back to regular. Periods are telling y'all. I will say this though, if you have reached menopause. Meaning you've gone for a year without menstruating and then you start bleeding again. Get that checked out please. [00:14:34] I am not a doctor. I'm just a know-it-all, but I do know that that is an abnormal sign that requires attention. Number two, hot flashes. About 75% of perimenopausal people experience hot flashes. They are immensely uncomfortable and disturbing to so many people related to hot flashes, night sweats, that's when you have hot flashes at night, and that often is part of number four sleep disturbances. [00:15:08] Now sleep disturbances don't just have to be night sweats. The insomnia is pretty frequent for a lot of people in midlife that can be having a harder time falling asleep or staying asleep or just not getting quality sleep or waking up too early. Number five, mood changes and irritability. Y'all, you are not crazy. [00:15:33] And I would love to eliminate the shame spiral around emotional liability in general, but especially in midlife. Our hormones are surging. Our culture is judging us, ignoring us. Our brains are completely restructuring. We are going through some stuff. We know that adolescents are gonna get moody and we accept that and try to support them through that process. [00:16:04] Let's do the same for ourselves. Number six, vaginal dryness, which often goes hand in hand with number seven, decreased libido. But I will say for some people, para menopause. There is also number eight, increased libido, and often it can vary greatly because of hormone surges and dips. So you may have. A time where you have a very high libido and a period of time when you have a very low libido, all part of the process. [00:16:40] Number nine, difficulty concentrating. 60% of people impair menopause report having. Enough trouble concentrating that it has an effect on their work. And although this number is scary, I want you to know that for most people, this, like so many other side effects of this massive restructuring does get better after menopause. [00:17:06] Number 10, memory lapses and brain fog again, it does get better after menopause for most folks. Number 11, bone loss or osteoporosis. That does not get better after menopause, but there are medical interventions to help with this. We'll talk about that another time. Number 12, skin changes. Some people get a resurgence of acne impair menopause, which feels like a double whammy. [00:17:37] When you compare that with the loss of collagen and elastin, that makes our skin more supple and luminous, it happens. Number 13, weight gain. Number 14, bloating. Number 15, breast soreness. Especially for people who have breast soreness as a symptom of P M s, they're more likely to experience it impair menopause as well. [00:18:02] Number 16, itchiness in specific areas like the face or the neck or genitals. I'm really itchy right now. I can't tell if it's one of those things. I don't know if any of you had lice as a kid, but now if I even think about. Lice. It makes my head itch. And that's what this, that's what talking about this particular side effect does to me. [00:18:27] It's making my neck itch like crazy. Number 17, tingling or crawling sensations in your extremities. Some people also experience this in their arms, and it can feel like something is crawling under your skin. Pretty weird. It's called paraesthesia. Number 18, dental problems. Oh gosh. You know what? I still have a baby tooth. [00:18:53] It was meant to last for about eight years, maybe. It bodes well for the rest of me, but it's still in there. It's gonna come out at some point, and I'm like, oh man. Para menopause is gonna be the time. It's gonna be the time that that thing comes out. I'll keep you posted. Number 19, joint pain number 20, muscle tension and aches. [00:19:15] Number 21, burning mouth syndrome. Like you've taken a sip of McDonald's coffee when it's still scalding hot, but you haven't. Number 22 Electric shock Sensations. Uh, they say that's like having a rubber band snapped across your arm and these sensations, the burning mouth syndrome and the electric shock sensations are probably neurological and often fly under the radar. [00:19:44] People don't talk about them. Number 23. Thinning hair. Number 24, brittle nails, number 25, digestive changes, which can include constipation, loose stools, more gas, more indigestion. You know, I think a lot of us actually have digestive discomfort throughout our adult lives that we never discuss. Well, let's start now. [00:20:12] Let's not be uncomfortable anymore than we have to be. How about that 26 irregular heartbeat. Sometimes that can also come with dizziness. Number 27, headaches and Migraines. I have such a distinct childhood memory of my grandmother, Mimi, who has been referenced in many episodes of Pause to Go of her getting migraines. [00:20:39] She was definitely in para menopause at that time and she had terrible migraines, and she would go to bed for a couple of days and I will say this. They got better. She got better. She had a long, wonderful life and was not plagued by migraines for all of it. Number 28, new allergies. Isn't that fun? Number 29. [00:21:05] Loss of bladder control or incontinence affects the majority of people with vaginas. 30 a change in body odor. 31, fatigue or chronic exhaustion, 32 depression, 33, anxiety or panic disorder. I mean, after hearing all of these potential side effects, that totally makes sense to me. And then y'all, I found it cold flashes. [00:21:40] So I'm not alone. So why do I share all of these? Well, because these are the things that people are writing about and finally researching. And we usually hear about weight gain, dry badges, hot flashes, and irritability. But if you are experiencing the other side effects, you are not alone. And there are so many things we can do to mitigate or alleviate some of these discomforts. [00:22:10] I also really wanna say this. It's not all bad. It sounds so bad. I'm feeling guilty bringing up all of these side effects in this one episode. Let me start with the worst stuff, but I can also say that midlife is great for me so far. I cry at pretty much anything, but I'm also finding fresh ways of relating to the world and to myself, new ways that are wonderful for my career, for my friendships, for my family, and for me. [00:22:45] Also, the majority of people that I have talked to who have gone through this. Say something to the effect of, there were some hard times in there, but it gets better, so let's pause to go and make the most of our midlife adventures. Oh, also, if you know anyone who is going through the change or is struggling with midlife or maybe. [00:23:17] Isn't struggling and you feel like these episodes or this podcast would be good to share with them. Please do. This is all about connecting with folks, and the best way to do that is to share our stories. Here's my call to action for this episode. That's what they call it when I'm trying to get you. To do something, I want you to do something, and that is to share your story. [00:23:43] So if you would like to share an experience of your midlife, delights, agony, or just plain humor, you can leave me a voice memo on my new website, pause to Go podcast.com. There's a tab on the right side of the website that says something like, leave me a voice memo, and you can. You can just record a voice memo for me right there, and I'll get it. [00:24:06] And if you feel comfortable having me share your voice on the pod, then I can share that with everyone. It's so nice to hear other people's voices, but if you don't feel comfortable having me share your voice, I can just anonymously share your story. It'll be great to have your stories on the Pause To Go podcast. [00:24:30] All right. Stay curious y'all. Thank you for listening to the Pause to Go podcast. Special thanks to code-based co-working and W T J U Radio for their support. This has been an awkward sage production.

Every year I personally feel like the Packers leave so much talent out on the board. In my redo of this years NFL Draft, I focus on grabbing players that are younger, better athletes, higher PFF Grades, and were ranked higher on the overall consensus board then the players the Packers selected. After going through this exercise as I was watching the NFL draft, I knew I would be disappointed but I never thought I would be this disappointed on the Packers missing out on dramatically changing the future of their franchise for the better.

Where's the Lemonade?

Let's start with a frequently asked question in divorced households: When my child goes to their dad's house, he has different rules. When they come home, they think they can do whatever they want.  I am tired of the battle. How can I help them adjust to the different house rules? This is a brilliantly asked question about a common problem in divorced households. The question is not, “How can I get my ex to parent like me or to agree with me?” By the way, if you ask your ex to do this, they will most likely NOT just because it's you asking. But the question is, “How can I help my child adjust between the two homes?” Brilliant. This is not focusing on your ex, which you have no control over; this is focusing on your child. The answer is complicated… Managing the different rules, expectations, and personalities is challenging for the entire family. This can be highly emotional, and there's likely to be some conflict as you figure out what works best for you, your child, and her father.  But you can help your child understand and respect the different expectations of each parent without battles while still enjoying the time she spends with both of you.The article we are referencing for this topic talks about perspective and how it starts with YOU. PerspectiveThink about your attitude and how you are responding to this situation. If you— understandably—feel angry or stressed, your child will likely feel this way, too. Your words, tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language all communicate how you feel.Try to take the perspective of your child's father {or mother). For example, like other divorced fathers, he may try to make up for the divorce by letting her do whatever she wants, so there is little conflict while they are together or by buying gifts to compensate for the loss. If you understand your child's father's motives, it may make this situation more manageable.Whether or not you and your child's father can work on this together, the task for you is to help your child—as you put it—“adjust between the different house rules.”• Ask your child questions encouraging a back-and-forth conversation, not just a yes or no answer. Ask: “How does it feel to have different rules at your dad's and my house?” The more your child talks about her feelings, the better she can understand and respond to other people's points of view.• Set boundaries about the rules. Although your child may like one set of rules better than the other, it's best to be direct about the fact that the rules are different, and it is her responsibility to follow both sets of rules.• Consistency and Follow Through. Keep your rules consistent, and follow through with the consequences you have decided on. Your child depends on you to stay reliable even if things feel unstable.• Focus on the Positive. If you focus on the negative or get into battles, try reinforcing positive actions by commenting on them, like: “It was so helpful that you threw the trash into the wastebasket!”• Assess Yourself. If you are upset about your child's not following your rules, ask yourself what you expect of her and of yourself. Step back and look at your perspective. Are your expectations realistic? For example, maybe your child can't finish all her homework at her father's house. See if you can reach a compromise that works for all of you.Make a plan together: This is the most critical strategy to use. When you and your child engage in a problem-solving process together, you help her learn to gain Executive Function skills.Executive Functions are the skills we use to manage our thoughts, feelings, and behavior to achieve goals. Studies have found that when children develop Executive Function skills, they are more likely to thrive now and in the future.Determine the problem. Explain to her that you often battle each other and want to devise better management methods.• Talk with her about what's most challenging for her transitioning from one home to another and from one set of rules to another. Please write down the issues she faces without any judgment.Encourage her to think of ways she might solve these problems.• Brainstorm as many ways as you can come up with to solve these problems. Again, write them down without judgment.Evaluate the solutions. Here, you ask your child to take her and others' perspectives.• Ask your daughter what will and won't work for each suggested solution. Have her consider whether it can work for her, you, and her father.Create a strategy to try out to make things better.• Decide together which strategy or strategies you will experiment with. Set a time to get back together to discuss how it works.Evaluate how the solution or solutions are working after some time has passed.• When you get together to talk about what is working and what isn't, make sure that you consider each solution from the perspectives of all involved. When your child takes some responsibility for solving the problems she faces, she is more likely to follow through on the solutions than if she's told what to do. In effect, you are giving her a skill for life!Links:https://www.kith.care/skill/divorced-parents-with-different-rulesLemonade moment of the week: Redoing the laundry room.
