Ireland recorded two new all-time electricity demand peaks as cold weather set in this week, according to grid operator EirGrid. Levels of demand on the power system reached new highs during the previous cold spell in November, and this was again surpassed this week with demand peaks of 5,716 MW (Megawatts) recorded at 17:53 on Tuesday 7 January, and 6,024 MW recorded at 17:47 on Wednesday 8 January. Wednesday's peak and new record is of particular significance as this marks the first time that peak electricity demand has passed the 6,000 MW mark. Around 60% of electricity generation was coming from gas at this time, with 17% from renewables and further contribution from batteries, and imports accounting for 6.6%. For context, demand first passed the 5,000 MW mark during the extreme cold snap of December 2010, a record which stood for another 10 years before being surpassed in December 2020 and on a number of subsequent occasions, including this week. Wednesday also saw a new full-day energy demand record, where energy use totalled 119.34 Gigawatt hours (GWh). In addition, the beginning of the cold snap last weekend saw new demand peaks set for a Saturday (5287 MW, Saturday, 4 January) and a Sunday (5,134 MW, Sunday, 5 January). EirGrid is responsible for operating, developing and enhancing the electricity grid and market in Ireland. It carries out the complex task of matching electricity supply to customer demand in real-time from the National Control Centre in Dublin. Electricity demand in the winter is heavily influenced by weather conditions. EirGrid's analysis of Ireland's peak demand over winter indicates that a 1°C decrease in outside temperature results in a 40 MW increase in peak demand (50 MW when wind-chill is taken into account). Despite the high demand, no System Alerts indicating tight margins between electricity generation and demand were issued over the course of the week. Diarmaid Gillespie, Director of System Operations at EirGrid, said: "The extended cold spell this week saw electricity demand reach record highs. Our Control Centre staff were able to rely on a mix of generation options over the course of the week to ensure this demand was met, with a sufficient buffer maintained between generation and demand. "Since seeing the demand peak from the winter of 2010 passed in late 2020, we've seen a series of new demand records being set over the last four years, with peak demand rising by almost 900 MW in this space of time." In October, EirGrid's annual Winter Outlook indicated a reduced risk of electricity generation not being able to meet demand compared with previous winter periods. The situation has improved for a number of reasons, including the continued implementation of the Security of Supply Programme which is led by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU). Through this programme, additional Temporary Emergency Generation is now available as an additional generation option to engineers in EirGrid's Control Centre if required.

Auckland's rail operators are promising the city's trains will run smoother, as a new control centre provides hope there will be no repeat of January's commuter train chaos. The centre will put staff from One Rail, Kiwirail and Auckland Transport into one office and aims to provide a speedier response to faults on the rail network - especially when the City Rail Link goes live. But as Maia Ingoe reports, a cloud is hovering over the project, with millions of dollars more needed to complete the network rebuild.

After receiving Christ, we are being transformed by God's SPIRIT as we HEAR and DO God's WORD (Romans 12:1-2, 2Corinthians 3:16-18, James 1:21-25). (1) A man must first receive GOOD TREASURE into his HEART, by meditating on the Word of God and receiving His transforming life into your heart from the Spirit. This way his heart has an abundance of good treasure. (2) He must then BRING FORTH those GOOD THINGS from his HEART into his LIFE, by his words and actions. The primary way we express and release what is in our heart is by our WORDS: “For out of the ABUNDANCE of the heart the MOUTH SPEAKS” (Matthew 12:34-35). Your WORDS are very important to the final outcome of our lives (Matthew 12:37). We release the good things in our heart into our life by our words, for: “with the HEART one BELIEVES unto RIGHTEOUSNESS (right standing in the promise of God), and with the MOUTH CONFESSION (of the promise) is made unto SALVATION (the manifestation of the promise in our life)” (Romans 10:10). We must be DOERS of the WORD, and not HEARERS ONLY, otherwise we are deceiving ourselves if we think we are growing spiritually (James 1:22, Matthew 7:24-27), for we are BLESSED in our DOING of God's Word (James 1:25). Then James says that DOING the WORD starts by CONTROLLING our TONGUE – that is the first thing (James 1:26). James expands his teaching on the TONGUE in James 3, which is a chapter entirely devoted to our use of the TONGUE. He says is it the CONTROL CENTRE of our BODY and LIFE. If we can control our tongue, we are mature, and able also to bring our whole body under control (v2). We control the direction of our life by controlling our tongue, just as we can control a horse by using a bit in their mouth (v3), and just like a pilot can control the direction of a large ship, by using a small rudder, representing our tongue (v4). The tongue is also capable of great destruction, like a fire. If you do not control it, it has the power to destroy the course of your whole life. Because God set the tongue as our control centre, if we allow our tongue to be controlled by the fire of evil, then that destructive fire will spread to our whole body and life (v5-6). The tongue is like a wild beast, so we need God's help to tame our tongue (v7-8). If we do not exercise control, both blessing and cursing will proceed from our mouth, which should not happen (v9-10). In nature, a spring either sends forth fresh water or bitter water through the opening, but not both (v11). The reason why both blessing and cursing can come out of our mouths, is that there are 2 springs or fountains within us - the SPRING of the SPIRIT and the FOUNTAIN of the FLESH. We choose which spring we yield to. Your FLESH FOUNTAIN can produce nothing good, and your SPIRIT SPRING can only produce good (v12). We need to learn to discern between these 2 FOUNTAINS, between the wisdom from BELOW (words which are earthly, sensual, demonic and produce evil fruit), and the wisdom from ABOVE, which is pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, without hypocrisy. Words from above flow in a Spirit of peace and TASTE good (sweet), and produce good FRUIT (righteousness and peace) - (James 3:13-18).

Use these psychological tactics to change how people see prices. I recently read a very in-depth article by Nick Kolenda on the psychology of pricing. I was so fascinated by what he revealed that I immediately changed some of the ways I display prices for myself and the things I design for my clients. I thought I would save you time by summarizing the 42 research-proven psychological tactics in Nick's article in a podcast series. I'm sure you'll find it very useful in your design business. All studies I reference are linked to in Nick's article, in case you're interested. As Nick puts it, At the end of the day, price is merely a perception. Nothing more. Nothing less. In fact, you can change that perception of how people interpret a price simply by changing the visual traits of the numeral. It's a given. The number 5 is greater than 4. And 6 is greater than 5. But using these psychological pricing techniques, you can actually make prices seem lower - without reducing the actual price. According to a 2002 study, most people don't remember exact prices. Rather, they remember general prices. Have you ever looked at a price, and later when asked about it, only have a general idea of how much it was? When I get home from the grocery store and my wife asked me how much it cost. I don't always remember the exact price. Was it $131 and change, or was it $138 and change? So I might tell her it cost "$130 something dollars." Because humans have such a hazy memory regarding prices, we can use certain psychological tactics to influence people into seeing smaller prices than they realize. Let me get right down to the actual tactics. Tactic 1: Reduce the Left Digit By One You're probably already familiar with this tactic. Reducing the left digit by one creates a perception of a lower price. $199 is viewed as a much better deal than paying $200. Gumroad's conversion rates study shows that pricing things at $0.99 instead of $1 or $2.99 instead of $3, or $5.99 instead of $6 conversion rates increase by 2-3%. According to a 2005 study. Our brains encode numbers so quickly that we register the size of the number before we finish reading the entire number. When reading $1.99, our brain registers it as a dollar something which is lower than $2 something making it more desirable. Nick offered a bonus tip to this tactic. Superscripting or minimizing the digits after the decimal places more emphasis on the number before the decimal. So $1 with a small 99 next to it appears smaller than $1.99 all the same size. Tactic 2: Use Prices With Fewer Syllables I'm a bit skeptical about this tactic. But according to a 2012 study, the more syllables there are, the more mental resources we need to process the information. The same principle applies to numbers. If we spend more mental energy reading a number or price, we falsely perceive that price as larger. The fewer syllables involved, and we perceive that price as smaller. It doesn't matter that you are not saying the number out loud. Your brain does it for you. This same study found that a slightly higher price with fewer syllables was more favourable to people than a lower price with more syllables. For example. $27.82 has 7 syllables. $28.16 has only 5 syllables. There's only $0.34 between the two prices. But people were more inclined to spend the higher amount. As I said, I'm skeptical about this one, but the studies do show it to be true. Tactic 3: Display Prices In A Small Font Size. This one applies to what we do as designers. According to a 2005 study. Human brains conceptualize size with value. If you display the price in a smaller font size, people will perceive the price to be smaller. Another trick is to position larger elements around the price to create a visual hierarchy. The larger elements will make the price visually smaller, which in turn makes the perceived price smaller. The revers works for discounts. Display discounts larger to emphasize their large value. Tactic 4: Remove The Comma. I really like this tactic. According to a 2012 study, removing the comma from a price makes it seem lower. This one ties into tactic 2 of having fewer syllables. A price displayed as $1,499 reads as one-thousand four hundred and ninety-nine–10 syllables. Whereas a price displayed as $1499, without the comma, reads as fourteen ninety-nine–5 syllables. I may be skeptical about the syllables thing. But I cannot argue that $1499 sounds like a better deal than $1,499. Tactic 5: Use Words That Indicate a Reduced Magnitude. According to a 2005 study, the words associated with a price influence people's perceptions of that price. For example. Two identical pairs of inline skates are selling for the same price. Both packages list the same features and benefits. However, one pair emphasized “High Performance” while the other pair emphasized “Low Friction.” The pair that emphasized “Low Friction” outsold the other pair. The wording associated with the price caused the perception of the price to change. How can you incorporate this into your design business? Maybe you can promote low-maintenance websites as opposed to high converting websites? I don't know. But it might be worth doing some A/B testing. Tactic 6: Separate the Shipping and Handling. According to a 1998 study, people are more likely to use the base price when making comparisons. By partitioning your price, meaning separate the price into multiple components instead of offering a total price, you lower the base price, which creates a perception of the offer being more affordable. A 2006 test run on eBay showed auctions with an opening bid of $0.01 and a shipping cost of $3.99. Outperformed auctions for the same item with an opening bid of $4 with free shipping. The total prices were identical. And yet, the first one received a lot more traction. Tactic 7: Offer Payments in Installments By offering people an option to pay in smaller increments rather than one lump sum, you anchor their perception on the smaller price. Let's say you are pitching a new website design to a client. Instead of quoting them $6000, quote them three installments of $2000 each. Don't get me wrong. Client's are not stupid. They know that three installments of $2000 are $6000. But by offering installments, you taint their comparison process. Even though the client knows your total price is $6000, if they compare it to another web designer who quotes a total of $6000, you're lower installments will feel much more appealing to them and have a good chance of influencing their decision towards you. Tactic 8: Mention the Daily Equivalence. You see this tactic often used by charities and non-profits. Instead of mentioning the monthly or yearly cost, they share the low daily price. A 1998 study proved that using a daily price creates a perception of an overall lower price. This doesn't mean you shouldn't mention the regular price. In fact, it should still be the primary focus. However, mentioning the daily equivalence anchors people towards the lower end of the price spectrum. For example. Being a member of the Resourceful Designer Community is $14.95/month. That works out to $0.49 per day. Is having a group of fellow design peers who are able and eager to help you grow your business not worth $0.49 per day to you? If so, join today. A bonus tip: if you can't reframe your price into a daily cost, a 1999 study shows that the same thing can be done using petty cash expenses, such as the cost of a cup of coffee. Tactic 9: Be Precise With Large Prices This is one of my favourites out of all of these tactics. It's also the first one I started implementing. When dealing with large prices, people are willing to pay more money when a price is precise instead of rounded. For example, A website project costing $6834 as opposed to a website project costing $6000. Why is that? A rounded price is more suspicious. A client may question how you came up with a nice round price of $6000. Did you pick it out of thin air? Did you calculate the actual cost at $5700 and decided to round it up to $6000? However, a precise number, such as $6834, leaves little room for suspicion. If you are quoting a precise number, clients will readily believe it's the actual price of the project. This thought pattern makes people much more agreeable to the price. A 2007 study analyzing 27,000 real estate transactions showed that home buyers were willing to pay more, often thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars more, for a home listed at a specific price compared to a home listed at a rounded price. These same people were also less likely to negotiate, or if they did, they would negotiate in much smaller increments than those bidding on a home with a rounded asking price. By providing a specific price, such as $6834 for a website instead of $6000, the client is much more likely to trust what you are selling them and be agreeable to the price. As I said, after reading this one, I immediately stopped quoting rounded prices to my clients. It's still too early to tell how it's going, but so far, so good. Want more tactics? Tune in to next week's episode Resource of the week Chrome Application Shortcuts A convenient way to turn a website into a desktop application is by using Chrome Applications Shortcuts. This is especially useful for browser-based tools such as invoicing/bookkeeping and Customer and Project Management Software. Instead of searching through dozens of open browser tabs for the right one, create an application shortcut and treat the webpage as a desktop application. To create a Chrome Application Shortcut, open the website, you would like to turn into an application in a browser tab. On the far right of the address bar, click the three vertical dots. Select “More Tools” > “Create Shortcut” Name the application in the pop-up window and be sure to check “Open as Window.” then press Create. A new Application icon will appear in the Chrome Apps folder within your Applications folder. You can now use it just like you would any other application. You can add it to your Dock. You can create Aliases from it. And you can easily switch between it and your other applications via the Control Centre. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
"A Friend of Mind - Learning to Work with instead of against Our Most Powerful Asset" Monday morning live with Natasa Denman featuring one of the Ultimate 48 Hour Authors, Simon Gillmore, the author of “The Control Centre – understanding the nature and function of the subconscious mind”. Simon is the head honcho at The Control Centre - A business based around serving people who feel stuck in their lives. The Control Centre is a metaphor for the subconscious mind - the supercomputer behind controlling our experience. And while he is not a trained psychologist, personal development and the subconscious mind has been a lifetime obsession for him. In wanting to find ways to deal with his own demons of addiction, depression, and anger issues, he has covered a lot of ground over the years, devouring thousands of hours of material and courses. He is a practising Life coach for the past 3 years and developed some very simple and easy to understand insights that can be implemented quickly that will help anyone gain more strength, self-assuredness, and control of their lives permanently. Three key insights from Simon Gillmore: The Achilles Heel As powerful as the subconscious mind is, it is not able to tell the difference between what we think is real and what we picture we hold in our imagination. By creating clear mental images, we pre-empt our experience, and can trick the mind of the life that we’ve ‘already had.’ Open your eyes Our mind is designed to spot differences in the environment. But it can only see what we tell it to look for. If we don’t have a clear vision of who we want to become and how we want our lives to look, how can we ever see it. This powerful mind needs a road map - an idea of what looks good to us, what to look for. The miracle of mindfulness There is a reason this practice that has existed for thousands of years is coming back in vogue, and is touted to hold the key to curing all forms of mental illness. It evokes a deep sense of peace and connects us with the creative realm where our life situations can be realised as the ‘mind made’ narratives they truly are. A made-up story that can be changed as easily as the stroke of a pen. Take-aways: 1. Self-improvement/Change 2. Prioritising 3. Do you have what it takes to run a design business from home? If there’s one positive takeaway from the 2020 Pandemic, it’s that a lot of people got to experience what it’s like to work from home. Some realized right away that it’s not for them. They need people around them and an office environment to be productive. In contrast, others got a taste of what being a home-based business owner is like. And they like it. But to run a design business from home, full-time, permanently, you need to know what you’re getting into. Some designers think that working from home is an easy life and that once you set up your design business, new clients and projects will just flow in. But it doesn’t work that way. This is not Field Of Dreams. Just building it does not guarantee they will come. Running a successful design business takes more than design skills. For your design business to succeed, you need solid skills in business development, lead generation, marketing, communication, leadership to work with your team, and of course, sales. Being a designer and owning a design business are two completely different things. So how do you make the most of it? How do you set yourself up for success? How do you ensure that you can sustain this lifestyle long term? The answer–you need to plan. How does that saying go? “By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail.” So prepare yourself. Because chances are, it’s going to be a rocky start. Step 1: Create an environment you’re comfortable in. The first step in feeling like you’re running a home-based business is to treat your working space as your business office. Having a place in your dwelling where you can transition from home life to business life is key. If you have a separate room that you can designate as your office, all the better. But if that’s not the case, pick a corner and set it up to be your working environment. Get yourself a good office chair and set up your computer so that it’s ergonomically comfortable to work at. Then fill the space with everything you need to work productively. The more your environment feels like your “working space,” the more productive you’ll be. Step 2: Keep your overhead to a minimum. Everyone dreams of making big bucks and living the dream. But that’s not the way you should be thinking. Remember, it’s not how much money you make that’s important, but how much of the money you keep and what you do with that money, especially at the start. Even though a good office chair is important, don’t spend $1000 on one if you don’t have the money to invest yet. Keeping your overhead low is important. You want to keep your expenses to a minimum to benefit more from the money you make designing. A wise man once said you could save 100% of your money by choosing not to buy something. So even though I’m a proponent for things such as lifetime deals. It’s only a deal if you can afford it and if you’re going to get enough use from it to cover the cost of the deal. Especially when you’re just starting, be careful what you spend. Step 3: Work on your business, not in your business. One of the biggest mistakes freelance designers make is focusing all their time and energy on the projects they do for their clients. Yes, you want to give 100% to your clients. But that 100% doesn’t have to mean all of your time. There’s a big difference between working in your business and working on your business. You must make time to work on aspects of your business as well. Like finances, to make sure you’re keeping your overhead low and doing the most with the money you’re earning. Then there are marketing plans to figure out how you’re going to reach out to new clients. There are also processes and systems you need to develop for your business to succeed, like how you will communicate with your clients and your team? How are you going to organize all the assets you acquire? Don’t forget your goals. Goals are your destination. Where you want to be a year, two years, 5 years from now. Without goals, you have no way to measure your success. Just because you’re an office of one, making money from the few clients you have, don’t think you can avoid treating what you do as a business. And for any business to succeed, it needs to evolve with the times. So make time to work on your business, and not just in your business. Step 4: Be proud of your home-based business. Never shy away from the fact that you are working from home. There was a time when working from home was looked down upon. But not anymore. It’s the end of 2020, and if there’s anything this year has taught us, is that working from home is a viable option. It no longer has the negative stigma it once had. In fact, many people will be envious when you say you’re working from home. Take the attitude that you are working from home, not working at home. There’s a difference. You are running a business, just like every brick and mortar business out there. It just so happens that your business is situated in the same location you call home. Step 5: Look the part. Just because you’re working from home is not an excuse to be unprofessional. How you present yourself and your business is vitally important to your success. I’m a T-Shirt and jeans kind of guy, but any time I meet with a client, either in person or virtually, I make sure to dress up, shave and look presentable. If you present yourself as a starving artist, your clients won’t take you seriously. If you need an actual business environment to meet with clients, look into daily office or conference room rentals at local co-working spaces. Looking professional also applies to your visual brand. Your logo, your website, your social media, etc. You’re a designer; I shouldn’t have to tell you the importance a good brand can have on a business. The same applies to you. Step 6: Be honest with yourself. All of this may be well and good, but you have to be honest with yourself before you get too far down this path. Not everyone is suited to working from home. Nobody knows you better than yourself. Do you have the work habits required to do this all alone? Do you have the discipline to work unsupervised and not be distracted by the things around you? Can you remain happy and motivated after doing this for a long time? Are you capable of dealing with the isolation of being alone every day? This last one is important. Isolation can lead to depression, which can lead to poor working habits and bad business decisions. Which, if left unchecked, can result in a failed business. Find something to help with isolation. Join groups and communities to help combat isolation. The Resourceful Designer Community is a great place for this. Or find local groups where you can interact in person. Not only will these activities aid your social mindset, but they can also enhance your business and quality of life significantly. Think about it before you try it. So there you have it, six steps to running a business from home. If you’ve already taken the plunge and are currently running a home-based design business, make sure you have everything in place to ensure your success. Remember, A goal without a plan is just a wish. And the last time I checked, wishes don’t put food on the table. How much thought have you given to working from home? Let me know by leaving a comment for this episode. Mac mini Initial Review Notes My First Experiences with Setting Up an M1 Mac (the Mac mini) From the outside, feels like a normal Mac mini, including the physical size of the case. M1 chip inside of course with 8 cores, 8 GPU Cores, and 16 neural engine core. I deliberately purchased the standard version: 8GB RAM and 256GB hard drive. Ports: Ethernet, 2 USBC/Thunder bolt, HDMI, 2 USBA, and 3.5MM ear phone jack. Under the ports, is a wide vent for the internal fan air flow. Being a desktop, the Mac mini has to be plugged in to power, no brick as in the very old days. Tips for setting up the M1 Mac mini though: for the initial setup you will need a monitor or at least an HDMI cable that will fool the M1 Mac mini in to thinking it has a monitor plugged in: otherwise you won’t go anywhere. I also plugged in my Magic Keyboard 2 as a USB keyboard, this made things easier. However, during the setup, the I kept having to dismiss the dialog that wanted me to connect a Mouse or Trackpad. Once I discovered the monitor issue smile, setup was slightly different to what I was used to in setting up a Mac. Now with Big Sur you have onboarding for accessibility, which whilst I found fantastic, just put in more options to concentrate on in the whole setup process. By the time I got to choose using two Apple IDS, and not using Fire Vault, my concentration was getting a bit warn, and I ended up getting my I Ds back to front, and chose Fire Vault. Once setup was complete, my Mac some how decided that I had put in the wrong password to login to the Mac. After several attempts, I just chose a simple password, which then worked. So usually setting up a new Mac which usually takes me less than 30 minutes, this with all the issues, took me 2 hours. It is great to see the start up chime back, which if you don’t like it, you can turn off in System Preferences, Sound. Once all setup and logged in, the M1 Mac mini has been a dream to use with Big Sur. Because I am using Fire Vault, VoiceOver speech that comes up before the login prompt is using good old Fred, then after logged in, it is back to my usual Karen speech synthesiser. I now don’t need my monitor plugged in, which was my 24 inch TV on my desk for the Apple TV, so now it is plugged back in to the Apple TV box. The first time I ran a non Apple silicon app, I was prompted to install Rosetta, after which all of my usual 3rd party apps were fine: eg Amadeus Pro, Dropbox, Just Press Record, Twitterific, Zoom etc. Now of course, you can run iOS apps on the M1 Macs. Searching for iOS apps on the Mac App Store is sort of relatively easy. I tend to search for an item first, then go in to the Toolbar and choose iPhone/iPad apps over the default Mac apps, then usually above my name, is the start of the hit list which I then interact with via VoiceOver. However, when there is editorial stuff happening or other unknown things, the Mac App Store gets down wright hard to navigate with VoiceOver, I found myself searching on the web for the Mac app link which most of the time brought it up in the Mac App Store. So far I have used (all which have worked) Frotz, Nature Space, Overcast, Sensibo, TravelEar, Voice Timer, Weather Gods, and White Noise. When using iOS apps on the Mac, VoiceOver treats them as “normal” Mac apps. In Big Sur, VoiceOver gives you a keyboard shortcut to get to Notifications Centre VO+O, and the new Control Centre VO+Shift+O. The only thing I could not find in doing all my usual changes to the OS, was Announce Time, it is now under Doc and Menu with in System Preferences. The new VO+Command+Space Actions menu comes in very very handy, and you can also access the context menu from this Actions menu. The only slightly annoying thing I have so far noticed with Big Sur, in the Extras menu for WiFi Connectivity, you don’t get told the name of the network you are connected to. I only got one time the dreaded “busy busy” from VoiceOver during setup. The only time since I have gotten this is using Twitterific, but no where as bad as it used to be on my other Mac: may be once in the last 48 hours. The VoiceOver speech rotor VO+Command+Arrow keys, which used to take a second to switch to the next or previous parameter, is still slightly paused on the M1 Mac mini, but certainly usable. The current time accessed with VoiceOver via Right Option+T, is again, a lot more responsive than on my other Macs: a significant delay on older machines. As I type this, I have 18 apps open, am streaming music, and am copying files to an external hard drive. The combination of Voiceover Keyboard commander to allow me to launch apps from the Right Shift key, and all of my favourite apps on the Dock, there is no waiting around on this M1 Mac mini: its actually VoiceOver still speaking whilst the app is sitting there ready to go. As I said, an absolute pleasure to use. Of Course, Big Sur is Now Available New Control Centre, pin Conversations in Messages, and new VoiceOver VO+O command to take user to the Notifications Centre and VO+Shift+O to the Control Centre. https://9to5mac.com/2020/11/12/macos-11-big-sur-now-available/ Victor Reader Trek 2.1 avialble Main feature is virtual maps like Sound Scape. After a long talk and much thought, AssistiveWare and Acapela Group have decided to discontinue development of Infovox iVox due to a shrinking user base and increasing development and support costs. This was not an easy decision, but with the current pandemic economic crisis, the fact that macOS allows you to download free multilingual voices, and AssistiveWare’s shifted focus toward AAC, we were compelled to bring up the topic we could no longer ignore. A NATO exercise is underway in the Baltic States which involves testing a unit that controls air assets. The Deployable Air Command and Control Centre, or DACCC, is usually based in Poggio Renatico, Italy. Over the last week some elements have been moved to Lielvarde Airbase in Latvia where they will stay until October. It’s made up of various containers, computers and satellite dishes and has a team of approximately 100 operators. The exercise, called Ramstein Dust II-17, is being run by NATO’s Allied Air Command. Various staff from the DACCC will be integrated within the NATO battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The exercise scenario demonstrates the defensive nature of Alliance activities and provides visible assurance to NATO members of the Alliance’s ability to meet its obligations. In this piece, a UK Royal Air Force A400M ‘ATLAS’ lands in Latvia, carrying equipment for the exercise. Footage includes shots of the A400M landing in Latvia, equipment being unloaded from the back of the plane and an interview with RAF pilot Flight Lieutenant Ian Brosch, 24 Squadron Royal Air Force. This version has music and graphics, and no subtitles.
Stephen and David spend most of this weeks show talking about home kit and the difference between Home Kit and the Internet of Things: Some notes for listeners: What is the Internet of Things? The internet of things is where a device has network connectivity data and shares information back to a computer or smartphone. An example is the Parrot Flower Power. It looks a bit like a twig and you put it in a plant - then download the Flower Power app on to your iPhone and connect to the Parrot Flower Power through Bluetooth. You put into the app the type of plant the device is in and it will tell you how much water and sun the plant is getting through collecting this data with a solar and water detector. You receive alerts if your plant needs more water - or if it needs to be moved into the shade. There are many apps like this available for many items that you may have in your home. But for each item you wish to interact with - there is an app. Which means many apps to go in and out of. What is a connected home? A connected home is where you can control accessories in your home, such as lights, door locks, security cameras, temperature control and power sources. Each item in a home can be controlled separately But with Apple's HomeKit - they can all talk to one another in the same app. And even more exciting - be controlled via the built in personal assistant, Siri. Turning on your lights will be as easy as saying, “Turn on the lights” You might be asking, but how does it work? Is Apple making lights now? No… In iOS 10, there is a new app for the platform, called the Home App. Home App allows you easily connected HomeKit enabled devices and create a smart home. It is accessible on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and even the Apple TV. You can set up each of the devices on a full customisable Home screen. And you can set up scenes so that a series of events occur at the same time. For example, you can set up an “I'm Home” scene, which will mean your front door will unlock with a schlage door lock, your lights will turn on with Phillips Hue lights and your temperature control will activate. Or you can turn lights on and off in one area through the app, or just using Siri “Hey Siri, turn off the bedroom lights” Apple Watch will also have quick glances, so that you can easily access the actions you may require on your wrist. You can also swipe up on your Control Centre and immediately have access to controlling your home. And all of this can use the Personal Assistant of Siri. Use Siri to activate a Scene or an individual item. Setting up HomeKit accessories are very easy! Just tap on the Add button in the Home App, scan the barcode on the box that the item came in - select the name and room and you are done. You can use Apple TV and your Apple ID to become remote access to your home. You can be away from home and using your iPhone that is with you, say “Hey Siri, did I leave my front door unlocked?” Siri will go back to the Apple TV connected on the same network on your phone, check the status of your door lock and tell you. You can then ask Siri to lock the door, unlock the door if a friend is wanting to get in, or turn your lights on and off. HomeKit can also do event and time triggers - even if you are not there. Such as time based trigger - to turn your lights on every evening at 7pm. Or geo based - so when you arrive home with your iPhone - the front door will automatically unlock. All of this is done in a secure and private manner - the protocol or home kit is a two way handshake to securely set up the device. To be secure Apple could not simply integrate with existing hubs and smart devices. It had to build a platform and then convince third-party companies to build to it. Not only did this entail programming, but Apple was also requiring the integration of secure hardware for end-to-end encryption. Apple's commitment to security means they did not want any cloud-based services, no surreptitious data gathering to learn more about your habits. Nothing leaves the confines of the accessory-Apple HomeKit relationship. Which means your home is secured, and the data on when you enter and leave and turn on your lights and everything else, remain secure and private to you. You can invite other users to access your home and you can add and remove people as needed. So if you have a house guest, they can turn on the lights. Also, with Apple TV now having the Home App also, they can control your home through the Apple TV. For further info: http://www.apple.com/ios/homekit/
It is made up of 10 shipping containers, equipment weighing 360 tonnes and is staffed by 160 operators. NATO’s Deployable Air Command and Control Centre has been moved by air, land and sea, from its home in Poggio Renatico, Italy, to Sardinia, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, 600 km south of the DACCC’s home base. The aim was to show NATO’s readiness and ability to swiftly deploy to counter threats to Alliance security. The DACCC, as it’s known, can be deployed to control NATO’s air assets in times of crisis. Footage includes shots of the containers, computer screens, planes and soundbites from various personnel.

Equipped with its own propulsion and navigation system, the unmanned ATV "space truck" - dubbed 'Jules Verne' - has a sophisticated automatic navigation system. Even though the ATV is an automatic space vehicle, ground control experts from ESA and CNES, the French space agency, will be heavily involved in operations. They are prepared for any contingency, determining the route the spacecraft must take to dock with the ISS and working closely with the other two ISS control centres involved in ATV operations: the Mission Control Centre - Moscow (MCC-M) and the MCC-H, in Houston. At each of these control centres, European, American and Russian engineers coordinate their actions and carry out final manoeuvres with extreme precision.ESApod video programme
