The Living Apart Together (LAT) lifestyle choice is gaining traction among both married and unmarried couples, especially older folks ready for a bond beyond the traditional. The LAT framework is predicated on three pillars: 1/The couple agrees that they are a committed romantic couple. 2/ Others view them as a committed romantic couple, and, 3/ they live in separate places. This episode is a deep dive into LAT featuring two relationship experts: Vicki Larson and Melinda Blau, award-winning journalists and authors. Vicki has written on the ageist and sexist narratives women face in the context of relationships. Her most recent book, LATitude: How You Can Make a Live Apart Together Relationship Work, explores the many iterations and paradoxes surrounding the LAT lifestyle. Melinda Blau, with 16 books on relationships to her credit, claims, “If you're good at relationships, you're good at life.” Her three-decades-long LAT relationship is a testimony to that conviction.Show NotesVicki's LATitude book on Amazon. All books written by Vicki Larson.Vicki's website.Melinda Blau's Amazon page with all of her books, including her latest, "The Wisdom Whisperers: Golden Guides to a Long Life of Grit, Grace, and Laughter."Music in this episode includes Lemon Jelly by T.J. How do you define a successful relationship? For Vicki Larson, it's not just about a ring on your finger.
Dr. Tafoya sits down with Assistant Superintendent Dr. Vicki Larson and Crosby Elementary Principal Natalie Cowley to ask the important question; How do we grow better readers?
Vicki Larson says what some marriages need to succeed is some space.
Who hasn't heard the stereotypes about women of a "certain age?” We deal with that idea head-on with Vicki Larson. The Future is Female.
In episode 56, Sheva and Noam sit down to talk with Susan Pease Gadoua and discuss the idea and practice of the “parenting marriage.” An innovative approach to staying together as a family when other elements of the relationship fail. Susan is a licensed therapist based in the San Francisco Bay Area with expertise in helping couples connect, reconnect or disconnect in a healthy way. In 2006, Susan began helping couples shape what became known as the Parenting Marriage. Since then, Susan has helped dozens of couples transition their marriage from a love-based union to one in which raising happy, healthy kids are the primary focus. Books Susan has written include the San Francisco Chronicle bestseller, Contemplating Divorce, The Parenting Marriage Workbook, and The New I Do, co-authored with Vicki Larson. Women are breaking through the tired and hurtful stereotypes of aging to better reflect who they are, how they live, and what they want as they age. Who hasn't heard the stereotypes about women of a "certain age?" That's the age when women become invisible, irrelevant, undesirable, asexual, unhinged, dried-up, hormonal messes. It's when women quickly slide into fragility and become forgetful, passive, weak, feeble, debilitated, disabled, dependent and depressed. Or so the story goes. Not only are those outdated narratives sexist and ageist, they are also damaging to women's physical, emotional, financial, romantic and sexual health. It's time to change them. In Not too Old for That, Vicki Larson helps change the narrative about being a woman at midlife and older. She questions what we've been told aging would be like and encourages us to instead ask ourselves, What do we want it to be like? And how can we get there? She says the key is to be curious, open-minded, and intentional about the ways we are becoming our future selves. We have an opportunity to create new narratives of aging as a woman, ones that value women at all stages of life, not just youth, and it starts with us. Once the stereotypes that have held women back are broken down, she says women can move past them and rather than feel helpless as the years add up, they can discover and tap into just how much agency they have. She believes that not only will her approach help to create a less ageist, less sexist, more-inclusive future, it will release our daughters and all young women from a similar future. On this episode, Laura talks with entrepreneur Rob. He's taken a kind of statistician approach to recoupling and in the process has gathered some data dating points that may lead to a new business venture. Then Laura chats with journalist Vicki Larson, who uncovers a surprising statistic or two in her latest book, Not Too Old For That: How Women Are Changing the Story of Aging. Finally, Laura talks with Tim, who was startled to discover that his expectations changed once he'd settled into single life.
Divorce is so common that it's reasonable to call into question the establishment of marriage itself. Does marriage in its current form still make sense? Do newer types of marriages, such as 'trial marriages' or 'short-term contract marriages' warrant more serious consideration before people plunge into the 'traditional marriage' model? Vicki Larson, journalist and author of 'The New "I Do" ' joins the podcast. Vicki's website - http://omgchronicles.vickilarson.com/bio/

The desire for living comes from your pussy, from your soul. It does not come from outside validation and beauty & sexual standards set by culture and society. So, how can we set out to rediscover our sexuality and purpose in Midlife when the narrative we are sold is that our libidos are low and our beauty is dependent on chemical intervention? In today's episode, I invite Vicki Larson, longtime award winning journalist, columnist, and author, to have a conversation about aging, chasing the appearance of youth, and normalizing what it means to have sex well beyond Midlife. We're diving into: What led her on the journey to writing her book, “Not Too Old for That: How Women are Changing the Story of Aging" Aging, the messaging we receive around it & viewing aging as an indicator of success Beauty standards & the pressures to get cosmetic surgery Vicki's rediscovery of her desire & passion (and younger men!) in Midlife Partnerships and exploring consensual non-monogamy And so much more juiciness! Last time out we talked to University of Virginia sociologist W. Bradford Wilcox (@WilcoxNMP), who’s championed marriage for its time-tested personal and social benefits. This week we speak to Vicki Larson (@OMGchronicles), a California journalist and coauthor of The New I Do: Reshaping Marriage for Skeptics, Realists and Rebels. Like Brad, Vicki sees the value of marriage, but she views it a flexible institution that can assume different forms in response to a changing world. These range all the way from polyamory to the binding covenant marriages available in Louisiana and elsewhere. We debate the extent to which marriage needs to evolve to stay relevant in 2020, and somehow manage to establish that Vicki and Brad may agree more about marriage than it might first seem.
