The putative leader of the students is Riff Randell, who loves the music of the Ramones. A new principal, the rock-music-hating Miss Evelyn Togar, is brought in and promises to put an end to the music craze. When Miss Togar and a group of parents attempt to burn a pile of rock records, the students take over the high school, joined by the Ramones, who are made honorary students. When the police are summoned and demand that the students evacuate the building, they do so, which leads to an explosive finale. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support

With the 888poker WPTDeepstakes events beginning just around the corner on April 15th, Kara is talking to yet another of the most recognizable voices from the World Poker Tour. It feels like Vince Van Patten has already lived a couple of lifetimes' worth of experiences. He's been a professional tennis player, a Hollywood actor and screenwriter, and now a beloved poker personality. But this interview is a new one, even for him. Kara is using her special set of psychological questions to get personal with Vince, as we get a glimpse into what motivates one of the most interesting and multi-talented guests we've ever had on Heart of Poker. We take a trip through Vince's somewhat unconventional but happy childhood, through his crazy drive to succeed in the tennis world and how he's learned a more balanced life is the key to happiness in later years. Kara and Vince talk getting caught in earthquakes in California, chasing storms in New England and how the key to friendship is not sugarcoating the important things. Vince also explains why, despite everything he's done, he still considers commentating with WPT to be the greatest job ever. Vince is clearly in a great place in his life, he's happy to share and not afraid to get a little cosmic. Basically, a perfect Heart of Poker guest. Check out previous episodes starting with Vince's WPT colleague Tony Dunst, as well as Phil Galfond, Mori Eskandani, Jason Koon, Dominik Nitsche, Vanessa Selbst, Maria Ho, and more.

BG and VVP discuss the importance of creating pressure situations in practice, winning the 1986 Miami doubles title, similarities between tennis and poker (including tennis tells), and the time Vince had 28 shots of espresso in one match and lived to tell the tale. Also, stay on for a Q&A question about players who feel confident in baseline games but struggle in sets. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Fan of the show, and one of our favorite people, Michael, requested we watch the movie 7 Days To Vegas on Prime Video. Mike is a former Angelino, Vegas resident and pro gambler, so we knew he would like a movie about a poker player who takes a prop bet to walk from L.A. to Vegas. But would we like it?Not only did we like it, but in researching the movie, we fell deep into the Van Patten rabbit hole that continued as a 6 degrees of separation through-line for the entire show. We hope you were able to keep up!The movie stars Vince Van Patten, his brother James Van Patten, his real-life wife Eileen Davidson (soap opera legend and Real Housewife of Beverly Hills), and has a cameo from his brother Nels Van Patten.Vince's dad is the veteran actor Dick Van Patten, his aunt is actress Joyce Van Patten. His uncle is producer/director of Perry Mason, Timothy Van Patten. And his cousin is Talia Balsam, daughter of his Aunt Joyce and the celebrated actor Martin Balsam. Talia is the ex-wife of George Clooney and the current wife of John Slattery, who worked, of course, with Rich Sommer on Mad Men, which we'll get to later. It's more about the prop bet than the poker table7 Days to Vegas is a fun, easy movie about a crazy "prop bet" between a down and out actor and a douche-bag director and the crew of degenerate gamblers they play with. Poker players and gamblers will like it. Anyone who has lived on the fringes of Hollywood will recognize the characters as guys we all know. Vimeo describes it as "an edgy comedy based on the true story of the rise and fall of one of Hollywood's biggest poker games. The names have been changed to protect the guilty."We're not sure how much is true, but we know the bet was real because Vince van Patten was the guy who took the gamble. We know first hand that the depiction of the Hollywood private poker scene is spot on. And we know the Van Patten's have been a gambling family for generations. There's a lot of truth in this movie and in it's characters. It never does reach it's potential in our opinion only because we know people just like the ones in this movie, and they are a rich source for comedy, but 7 Days To Vegas is still worth the ride.If you're looking for a feel-good, (The Hangover for guys over 40) 92-minute break from the crazy, check it out on Prime or Vimeo for rent or free on Tubi and Sling.Big thanks to Mike for the recommendation!

Ice Scream Sunday Episode 2 - Hell Night Hell Night, released in 1981, is everything you would expect in a slasher movie - hot, young people trapped in one place who get picked off more or less one by one, with a small number of survivors (I'll keep the exact number off of here to avoid being more spoilery than I already have been). But also, it's got the haunted house themes and Greek life to content with, so there's a lot at play here. We both agree that Linda Blair did NOT deserve a Razzie for this role. Her acting was one of the best parts of the movie, so don't believe the hype. As a bonus, at the beginning, Sammi tells her Vince Van Patten story (it's not all that interesting, but listen anyway). Gamblers all have some crazy stories, but it's rare that they're also great storytellers. Vince Van Patten, however, *is* a great storyteller and has stories about crazy side bets that grew to tens of thousands of dollars before his card game would even start. What's it like to go from child stardom to the world of pro tennis, then on to professional gambler? This episode reveals all, just like the cameras that show you the cards on the table when watching poker on TV. Stephen, Matt, and Vince talking gambling are definitely three of a kind on this episode of...THE NIGHT TIME SHOW!
Vince Van Patten is a man of many talents. The son of legendary actor Dick Van Patten got his start as a child, appearing in numerous commercials, as well as TV shows and movies such as Bonanza, Baywatch, The Six Million Dollar Man, Hell Night, and The Break. Despite being introduced to gambling at a young age by his father, Van Patten ultimately dedicated himself to tennis, and won the ATP Rookie of the Year award. In 1981, he even beat John McEnroe to win the Seiko World Super Tennis Tournament in Tokyo, reaching a peak of no. 26 in the world. After his tennis career was over, Van Patten returned to Los Angeles to continue acting, as well play host to some of Hollywood's biggest home poker games. His experience with the game and his time in front of a camera made Van Patten a natural choice for the World Series of Poker in 1998, and when the World Poker Tour made its debut in 2002, he was hired alongside Mike Sexton as commentator. Van Patten is now sharing the duties with poker pro Tony Dunst, and is in the middle of his 18th season on tour. Van Patten's most recent project is a gambling movie that he co-wrote and stars in called 7 Days To Vegas. The film focuses on a group of poker players who will bet on anyone and anything. As the prop bets get bigger and bigger, Van Patten's character agrees to attempt to walk from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, in under seven days, while wearing a suit. The film is available now on demand through Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, and more. Tony Dunst knew he wanted to be a poker player even before he could legally enter a casino. His dream became a reality and the Milwaukee, Wisconsin-native has put together a solid poker resume with $2.9 million in live tournament earnings and another $1.9 million online. He won his WSOP bracelet in 2016 and even has a WPT title from 2013. These days, Dunst considers himself to be more of a broadcast personality than a professional poker player. After longtime commentator Mike Sexton stepped down from the WPT to become Chairman at PartyPoker, Dunst was promoted to the full-time commentator spot alongside Vince Van Patten. Highlights from this episode include taking over for a poker legend, why Phil Hellmuth is the way he is, the glamorous world of gambling, being a sandwich artist and selling shoes, being banned from Australia, loneliness in Shanghai, being backed by a 17-year-old, being a WPT employee and champion, and throwing half his buy-in in the trash.
Mike Sexton is a legend in the poker world. In a life spanning over four decades as a poker professional, Mike has excelled both on the felt and on the business side of poker. He is a World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner, helped create PartyPoker in 2001 and was a key player in an event that changed the poker world forever – the launch of the World Poker Tour (WPT) in 2002. He has been a commentator on the WPT, along with Vince Van Patten, since its inception. In addition, Mike was recognized as poker's Top Ambassador at the Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Awards gala in 2006. That same year, he won WSOP Tournament of Champions, winning $1 million in prize money – half of which he donated to charity. He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2009. In this book Mike recounts his personal experiences and gives his take on some of poker's legendary characters over the past 40 years. If you enjoy poker, are fascinated by the development of the game and enjoy compelling poker, golf and gambling adventures, then you'll love Life's A Gamble.

Show Notes for Episode 2: “Poker and the Written Word” by Tim PetersTim discusses Jesse May's 1998 novel Shut Up and Deal. As Tim explains, May is also known for having been “The Voice of Poker” on the British TV show Late Night Poker (1999-2002). In fact, during the first season of the show May hosted the show as Mickey Dane, the name of the central character in Shut Up and Deal.Along the way, Tim mentions a couple of other poker novels: Rick Bennet's King of a Small World (1995) (which he recommends) & Richard Jessup's The Cincinnati Kid (1963). (I wrote about Jessup's novel early last year.) For those interested in some other poker novels, Tim also provides the following list of titles (no particular recommendations intended, here): Tap City by Ron Abell (1985); Broke: A Poker Novel by Brandon Adams (2008); Lucky at Cards by Lawrence Block (2007); The Rebuy by Burto Deluchi (2007); The Prop by Pete Hautman (2006); Texas Poker Wisdom by Johnny Hughes (2007); Dead Money: A No Limit Poker Mystery by Rudy Stegemoeller (2007); Deadman's Bluff (2006) & Deadman's Poker (2006) by James Swain; The Picasso Flop (2007) by Vince Van Patten & Robert J. Randisi; and The Perfect Play (2005) (called The Big Blind in the U.K.) by Louise Wener. You can read Tim's reviews for CardPlayer along with other writings at his website, “The Literature of Poker.”“Who Played Poker With Pocahontas When John Smith Went Away?” (1919) sung by Fanny Watson(Sam M. Lewis / Joe Young / Fred Ahlert)From the musical Monte Cristo Jr. Here are the lyrics (again, as well as I can make 'em out):Looking through my historyI find a little mysteryAbout a certain dame. How did little PocahontasTake John Smith for all his wampus? There! I know her game!He taught her how to play poker --She sent him home without his dough. But every time that John came backHe found her with a larger stack. Here's what I'd like to know . . . Now, who played poker with Pocahontas when John Smith went away? She always dressed up so pretty.Somebody must have spent the kitty. She wore a bluff just like every Indian that led John astray.Johnny's pipe of peace goes out the day he quit. When he came home he found his piece of pipe was lit. Now, who played poker with Pocahontas when John Smith went away? Now, who played poker with Pocahontas when John Smith went away? She always dressed up so pretty.Somebody must have set the kitty. She wore a bluff just like every Indian that led John astray. He called on her one cold night in an awful storm. She had no coat but still he kept her always warm. Now, who played poker with Pocahontas when John Smith went away?“Tales from the Tables” by Bob Woolley(a.k.a. Rakewell, the Poker Grump)The “Poker Grump” returns with a list of stupid things players say at the tables, in particular focusing on a couple of categories: "Compliments" & "Clichés."You can read more of Bob's tales -- of both the grumpy and non-grumpy varieties -- over at his blog, Poker Grump.“The Killer Cards,” The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe (originally aired January 12, 1951)Starring Sydney Greenstreet (Wolfe) and Gerald Mohr (Archie Goodwin).
