From March 21, 2023: By many accounts, the United States is living through a new era of competition—not just between major powers and strategic rivals, but between ideologies. Around the world, many authoritarian governments seem to be on the rise, even as many liberal democracies are facing a crisis of confidence, including, by some accounts, here in the United States. In a new book entitled, “Defeating the Dictators,” Charles Dunst, a former journalist and current deputy director of research and analytics at The Asia Group, lays out what he sees as the right strategy for making democracies more effective and defeating the appeal of authoritarian government. Lawfare Senior Editor Scott R. Anderson sat down with him to discuss his new book, the importance he places on Singapore as a case study, and how the domestic remedies he focuses on translate into foreign policy. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Spoiler Alert: This episode contains numerous plot spoilers for Civil War.On today's show, we inaugurate a new episode series called reel:verb, in which we rate, review, and analyze a recent movie from the perspective of politics, culture, and language in action. In the first installment, Alex, Olivia, and Calvin tackle the 2024 dystopian thriller Civil War, directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation). Civil War depicts a near-future US torn apart by domestic warfare, as seen from the perspectives of a small group of journalists (played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson, respectively) who are documenting the fighting and plotting to photograph and interview the besieged US president (Nick Offerman). We begin by providing our individual ratings of the film (out of 5 verbs), and then we recap the major plot points and set pieces that take place along Dunst et. al's roadtrip from hell. We conclude with a wide-ranging analysis of the film's politics and rhetoric, in which we unpack how it depicts journalism (and journalists) and consider its social significance in the midst of ongoing US-backed conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world. Ultimately, we argue, this film's vision of civil war is too far-fetched, abstracted, and underdeveloped to serve as a true cautionary tale for US audiences – perhaps because Garland, like his cast of photojournalists, is apparently more invested in aestheticizing violence than cogently critiquing it. Things had been relatively quiet, but there are now plenty of options coming to streaming services and in theaters, especially as we get closer to the summer movie season. In this week's episode, co-host Bruce Miller shares an interview he had with Quinn Shephard and Samir Mehta, producers of "Under the Bridge," a new limited series on Hulu staring Lily Gladstone. It's the first big project for Gladstone, fresh off her Oscar nomination for "Killers of the Flower Moon." Also on Hulu is a new four-part documentary called, "Thank You Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story." The series looks at the history of the band and includes interviews with Jon Bon Jovi, current and former band members, and Bruce Springsteen. Co-host Terry Lipshetz, who grew up in Jon Bon Jovi's hometown of Sayreville, New Jersey, shares some fun facts including a Star Wars connection. Another new series is the Amazon Freevee comedy "Dinner with the Parents." The cast includes Carol Kane and Henry Hall, who is the son of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall. And the show wraps with a discussion of the buzz surround "Civil War," the new film where the nation has fractured and a team of journalists is covering the war. Kirsten Dunst stars as a photojournalist and Nick Offerman plays the president. And of course, there's Dunst's husband Jesse Plemons stealing the show in an uncredited role. Contact us! Mark also gives his take on the film, as well as reviewing ‘The Teachers' Lounge', a drama in which a teacher decides to step in when one of her students is suspected of theft, finding herself caught between her ideals and the school system in the process; and ‘The First Omen', which sees a young American nun start to question her own faith when she uncovers a terrifying conspiracy to bring about the birth of evil incarnate in Rome. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 41 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to discuss the next film in their Sofia Coppola series, Marie Antoinette (2006). Three years after Sofia Coppola was riding high off her Oscar winning, smash hit Lost in Translation, she cashed in her black check to create a stylized, personal account of the life of one of history's most recognizable figures. With Marie Antoinette, she took a forty-million-dollar budget and made it feel like a hundred-million-dollar epic about a young women force into a social, political world she is not ready for, and must find a way to blend in before she is devoured from the inside out. Led by a magnificent ensemble, as well as luscious costumes, production design and a modern soundtrack, Marie Antoinette may have been criticized by audiences at the time of release for not being the movie they wanted after Coppola's era defining masterpiece, but over time, it has become an essential piece of filmmaking within her celebrated career. Ryan, Jay and Sophia break down Dunst's brilliant performance, the non-existing French accent work by the casts, Coppola's confident scope and vision for the film, the idea of a ‘birds in a cage' that the director loves to explore, the career of Jason Schwartzman, and what their favorite type of pie is (they aren't that big on cake). You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h13m. The guys will be back next week to begin their new series covering the films of Sofia Coppola with a review of her next film, Somewhere. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Democracy, in terms of its branding, has had a fairly rough decade. Numerous authors we have had on this podcast have highlighted and explained its global decline, discussed the expansion of nationalist movements which have eaten away at rule of law and institutional integrity, and the frustrating resilience of some of the world's most established authoritarian leaders, who seem to weather every storm keep their grip on power intact.  So it's such a refreshing change to pace to receive such a well researched and sharply argued case for optimism for the power of democracy to continue attracting those seeking freedom and opportunity from Charles Dunst in his new book, "Defeating the Dictators: How Democracy Can Prevail in the Age of the Strongman." Dunst, who is deputy director of research and analytics at The Asia Group and an adjunct fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), says that he approached his book with the goal of offering a tangible roadmap for combatting autocracy, focusing on practical and commonsense ways that US foreign policy (and foreign policies of other leading Western nations) can be marshalled toward producing better democratic outcomes. In this spirited discussion with Robert Amsterdam, Dunst explains how he sees immigration playing such a crucial role in helping democracies thrive, and how Washington, despite having to take a nuanced approach in dealing with allies which have hybrid qualities of both democracies and dictatorships, nevertheless has seen clear evidence of the enduring value of its soft power, continuing to be a promoter of rule of law, human rights, and equality.

Find out during this exciting conversation.  In our final segment Charles recommends The Cairo Trilogy: Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, Sugar Street, Grant rants about the breakability of stress balls, and Zoe discusses the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.  If you are under 40 and interested in being featured on the podcast, be sure to fill out this form.
