This week, we're heading down to the basement with no regard for our own well-being as an impromptu theme emerges from our weeks-long run of perfect pictures and Masterpiece Month continues with 2007's Zodiac, directed by David Fincher, written by James Vanderbilt, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Edwards, Chloë Sevigny, Elias Koteas, John Carroll Lynch, Brian Cox, Philip Baker Hall, Dermot Mulroney, Donal Logue and Charles Fleischer. It's very much a movie about obsession, the irresistable pull of a puzzle, and has a compelling case as Fincher's best movie. Watching it now, it's almost an ill omen for the cultural obsession with true crime content and podcasts in the years since, but this one manages to explore its gruesome crimes in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous or exploitative -- a tough needle to thread. If you'd like to watch Zodiac before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Paramount+. Other works discussed on this episode include Knives Out, Glass Onion, Mank, Citizen Kane, The Killer, Spy, The Heat, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Identity Thief, A Simple Favor, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Accountant, Twilight, Saint Maud, Ren Faire, The Idea of You, Kissing Jessica Stein, Friends With Kids, Bad Boys, Bad Boys II, Everybody Wants Some!!, Dazed and Confused, Nope, Evil, The X-Files, the music of Maggie Rogers, Summer of Sam, Fight Club, Se7en, Alien3, The Social Network, Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Spotlight, Prisoners, Hustle, Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Oppenheimer, Succession, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Devs, Twister, Mr. Show, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Boston Strangler, Cold Case Files, Forensic Files, I'll Be Gone In The Dark, and Accepted, among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up Masterpiece Month with the Wachowskis' magnum opus on what it means to create art under capitalism as we step behind the wheel with Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox in 2007's Speed Racer -- a movie that is sadly not available for streaming in Canada currently. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

The Rage: Carrie 2 was not a box office success, but it wasn't the disaster a lot of people remember either. Finishing at #91 for the year, just ahead of Go and (somehow) just behind the Melissa Joan Hart/Adrian Grenier vehicle Drive Me Crazy, The Rage: Carrie 2 opened in late March at an impressive #2 behind the 1999 comedy hit Analyze This. But it didn't quite make back its budget, and it as since largely been forgotten about. Which is a shame, because it has a lot to offer. While the film was initially called The Curse and had nothing to do with 1976's Carrie, the similarities led the studio to call for a retooling that set the production back a couple years. And actor Amy Irving, who played Sue Snell in the original, was called in to reprise the role. A last-minute change of director (Poison Ivy director Katt Shea) further impacted the production. But both the fact that The Rage: Carrie 2 finally hit cinemas just a few weeks before Columbine, and its use of a real-life true crime story (the notorious Spur Posse) has led to a lot of revision of its legacy in the quarter century since. As such, we invited horror fan and true crime guy Paul Haynes (collaborator on Michell McNamara's 2018 book I'll Be Gone In The Dark) to talk it out with us.
"I hate it, but I didn't like it, okay...I didn't hate it...but I didn't like it..." -Brooke Bates from Happily Booked (She makes no sense 100% of the time)“Godfather?” Sputtered Uncle Vernon. “You haven't got a godfather!” “Yes, I have,” said Harry brightly. “He was my mum and dad's best friend. He's a convicted murderer, but he's broken out of Wizard prison and he's on the run. He likes to keep in touch with me, though…keep up with my news…check if I'm happy…” And, grinning broadly at the look of horror on Uncle Vernon's face, Harry set off toward the station exit, Hedwig rattling along in front of him, for what looked like a much better summer than the last.Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban by J. We also doc the true crime doc series I'll Be Gone In The Dark along with Ti West's new film X! Also mentioned are Savageland (2015) and Severance (tv series, not the horror movie). CN: This episode contains discussion of sexual assault and rape, homicide and vigilantism.Hello there everyone! I've tinkered with the format of the show this week, quite by accident. However, it turns out I like the tinkering and I'm curious to know what you think about it. New format might look something like this: Intro, followed by a short segment called SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT in which my guest and I unpack something that's widely accepted as being standard or traditional but is probably pretty indefensible when it comes down to it, and then a much longer and meatier segment talking about a more specific issue. This might be something that's happened in the news that week or something we've read about or an idea we've had or even the particular specialty of the guest in question (for example, in Aja Barber's episode we would have devoted this segment to discussing her work around fashion and sustainability). Finally, each episode will end with a very short segment on something that's bringing joy or working positively in the world. My guest this week is hotline regular, KAREN PICKERING. She's a feminist and a community builder, and is currently writing her third book THE MOTHER OF ALL SHOCKS, a book about the industry of motherhood and all the ways we are being failed by it while encouraged to enter it. She's one of my besties! Here's how the episode looks:SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: Karen used to work at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and we talk here about the cultural practice of women changing their names after marriage to men. Why is this still happening? Where does it come from? And why is 'choice' such an illusion?THE MEATY MIDDLE: There's a heavy content note for this segment, because the topic is pretty full on. A tiktok popped into my feed the other night, featuring a man who spent 19 and a half years in prison. The reason he first entered the system (and stayed in it, as so often happens with the prison industrial complex)? When he was 12, he murdered another boy in his neighbourhood as an act of retaliation for the boy sexually assaulting his sister. What disturbed me about the tiktok was both in how unrepentent he still was about the crime and how enthusiastically so many of the comments supported him. It struck me as a really good example of how sexual assault and rape is only seen as real or legitimate if men take it on themselves to avenge women - because when women come forward with their own testimonies of this violence, we are so often disbelieved and further abused, with urgings to reconsider 'destroying' a man's life. Karen and I have a long discussion here about vengeance, testimony and who gets to be championed in situations like this. We touch on 'Promising Young Woman', the Brock Turner rapist trial and the documentary series, 'I'll Be Gone In The Dark'.POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME: Finally, in the joyfulness close out, Karen and I talk briefly about Ted Lasso and the immense pleasure this show is giving so many people. It's such a wonderful exploration of community and kindness, and it dissects toxic masculinity so well while demonstrating what POSITIVE masculinity looks like!Don't forget to let me know what you think of this format!Follow Karen on Instagram: @karenpickeringEmail: bigsisterhotline@gmail.comInstagram: @clementine_fordPatreon: www.patreon.com/clementineford****Support lines:LIFELINE: 13 11 141800RESPECTSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/clementineford-bigsisterhotline. On this episode, Charlie, Ariana, Elizabeth and Joel discuss true crime, a genre that documents real stories of illegal behavior. They talk about the recent documentary adaptation of Michelle McNamara's book I'll Be Gone In The Dark, true crime podcasts such as My Favorite Murder, and debate the ethics involved in producing a narrative about real traumatic events.

This week we drag out Myles Kane's $80k of tax debt that he and Elizabeth Zephyrine McDonough eventually elimintated with help from Rus. Even though it makes him sweat to even talk about it, Myles (an editor and director of Voyeur and I'll Be Gone In The Dark) opens up and his wife Zeph (whose work has appeared in The New Yorker and on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee) provides moral support and comic relief. We also talk about Myles's liver transplant and the GoFundMe they set up to cover the medical expenses even though he had good insurance. It may not seem like this is the case, but rest assured: this is a fun one! With scant time for a few books this month, I planned on three and skimmed a fourth for Nonfiction November Behind the Horror by Dr. Lee Mellor https://amzn.to/2Vh622t The origin stories behind our favourite horror films. Sons of Cain by Peter Vronsky https://amzn.to/2HWVX7K A study on the origin of our sadistic urges and just how prevalent serial killing has been... and is. I'll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara https://amzn.to/2JmV9d0 Written over years in near-obsessive fashion, the author died not long before this infamous killer was caught. Surreal, all around. Providence After Dark by T.E.D. Klein https://amzn.to/2Vh5TMt A fantastic take on the work of H. P. Lovecraft and reflections on others work, be it in the form of interviews, recollections, or essays. This makes me want to read the old guy's letters more than anything! Does being a real-life private investigator mean your life is like Jim Rockford and Thomas Magnum? For this PI, the answer - in some ways - is yes! Except, this PI is not a tall, imposing man like those Hollywood types. But don't be fooled! Sarah Alcorn has guts. She graduated from Harvard, is an author, hosts a podcast, and could be found occasionally working undercover. But, you'd have to notice her first!Listen and hear about Sarah Alcorn's interesting life as a Boston private eye!Sarah's website: https://greystonesinvestigation.com/Sarah's Podcast with co-host Laura McDonald called Ivy League MurdersIn the interview, Sarah references the late Michelle McNamara's book about the Golden State Killer entitled I'll Be Gone In The Dark. This week Dan and Chris tackle a big TV News week, plus we review HBO's new true-crime documentary I'll Be Gone In The Dark and new scripted shows Two Weeks To Live, I Hate Suzie, Ted Lasso, and Teenage Bounty Hunters.
We've got part 2 of the Golden State Killer! We definitely reccomend that you listen to part 1 first, as we start off in 1977 all the way down to Joseph DeAngelo's arrest and trial in this one. How the hell is it September? Don't think too deeply about that and instead get your ears round this month's Outside The Box, where Hannah very much doesn't hate I Hate Suzie, and she and Mick chat the highs and lows of I'll Be Gone In The Dark. Plus - there's never been such times - we do some listener requests, watching Harlots, Almost Australian and The Umbrella Academy. You are welcome. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. In this episode we’re doing a Patreon request with two films from 1965: Die, Monster, Die and Planet Of The Vampires. First and foremost, we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by talking about what we’ve done involving horror recently. We talk about the new HBO series Lovecraft Country, Liam talks about I’ll Be Gone In The Dark and Demon Knight, and Justin talks about watching the films The Hunt, The Pale Door, and Uncle Peckerhead. Up first is Die, Monster, Die. We begin by comparing it to the recent adaption of the source material with Nicholas Cage’s The Color Out Of Space. We give a brief summary of the film. We talk about how the film is essentially a classic haunted house/gothic story bookended with plot points from Lovecraft’s source material. We touch upon how the film kind of steers away from plot elements of COOS and instead weave in other classic elements common in Lovecraft’s work. Lovecraft’s opinion on science is briefly touched upon. Up next is Planet Of The Vampires. We briefly talk about the films influence on Alien and give a brief summary of the film. Liam talks about how he normally doesn’t enjoy films in this style. We briefly talk about the legacy of Mario Bava and how he could make a little go a long way. We talk about how there moments in the film that are surprisingly frightening for a film of this era. We talk about the charm of the film and how it won us over despite looking somewhat cheesy. Justin talks about how the film reminds him of the novel Monster by Christopher Pike and how he enjoys non-traditional approaches to vampires. Bava’s choice of color and lighting in the film is discussed, and how it contrasts with some of the cheesier effects. We conclude by talking about some of the political implications of the film. First and foremost, thank you for listening. Thank you to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening and donating. We take a one-week break from "TESD Town History" this week, but it will be back next week! We open some voting to the Chubies (that's you) to help determine which horror series we watch and recap this October. We talk about the upcoming reboot of The Thing and get on a whole tangent about getting stranded in a blizzard a few years back. We talk about the upcoming Action Park documentary, the surprising cancellations of Tosh.O and Drunk History, the HBO Max Seth Rogen movie An American Pickle, then the new documentary series on Netflix about the history of video games - High Score. Chuck raves about the documentary series I'll Be Gone In The Dark and we vow (?) to solve a cold murder case before the end of the year. After that, we talk about the announcements that came from this year's DC Fandome event. Our levels of excitment and caution do NOT match as we discuss the games Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. We discuss the upcoming Flash movie and of course...the trailer for The Batman. Which one of us is cautiously optimistic and which one of us claims to be but is secretly sporting a "DC Movies 4-ever" tattoo? - BradMP3 Download
After 40+ years, Joseph DeAngelo finally got his comeuppance. Join me as I go through the numerous crimes this monster committed in the 70s and 80s, as well as acknowledge and praise his survivors for their courage and strength. With his sentencing last week, it seemed like the perfect time to discuss this serial rapist and murderer. [content warning for sexual assault, neonaticide, truly egregious Foley design] When the subject is the Golden State Killer, the guest is Mike Dunn, who's back to talk about the first three episodes of HBO's I'll Be Gone In The Dark. Directed by Oscar-winner Liz Garbus and others, the six-part docuseries seems to struggle to integrate two narrative styles: a straight-ahead true-crime tale, and a "crimoir" about the wearing effects of researching monsters and the abysses they call home. Does Michelle McNamara's untimely death create a halo effect? Are some Capote comparisons more apt than others? And will we keep watching? In the Cold Case section, I went looking for a Garden State case to pair with the Golden State Most Wanted section...and what I found was so hilarribly bad, tacky, overacted, and downright bizarre that I fully expected Mike to end our friendship after watching it. Murder Made Me Famous S04.E06 covers the Melissa Drexler/"Prom Mom" case in pitilessly cringey detail, including a splash neither of us will ever forget, and when we go to hell for laughing at this trash-isode, it's this show we'll have to watch for all eternity. We are audio-only this week! We talk about that for a lil' bit, then Chuck tells me about new podcasts from Chris DeMakes and Mike Birbiglia. We discuss the trailer for the upcoming film "Palm Springs" and time-loop movies in general. We get hyped for the upcoming HBO documentary "I'll Be Gone In The Dark." We talk about the 30 Rock special coming out in a few weeks and talk about the impermanence of quarantine episodes. Chuck tells me about a Disney d23 special that is not what he thought it was, and ends up talking about "Prop Culture" on Disney+. We talk about some movies we watched this week, and Chuck talks about his parents' recent car accident as well as his recent doctor's visit. Disgusting. I talk a little bit about my church talent show. We offer a spoiler-free review of the new Judd Apatow movie "The King of Staten Island," then make it clear when spoilers will start, then offer our spoiler-full thoughts on the film! - BradMP3 Download
Paul Holes joins the Oxygen family with The DNA Of Murder; Blotter Holes-ologist Mike Dunn joins me again to talk about the new show, and whether it's really anything new at all. Was local law enforcement just waiting around for Holes and Yolanda McClary to help them out on the Burkert/Atkison case? Why didn't anyone catch the toothpaste detail before? And why can't two criminologists make their theory of the actual crime make sense? Later, we discuss another project headed up by two criminologists: Direct Appeal, in which two Fairleigh Dickinson criminology profs agree to look into Melanie McGuire's case, even though she's still appealing her conviction for her husband's murder (and dismemberment). The set-up's got a lot of potential, but a couple of structural decisions may have led to a disappointing result, though we hope Professors Shlosberg and Sacks take a run at another case...and we hope you'll take a run at The Blotter Presents, Episode 116. In Episode 048, Mike Dunn and I talked about Michelle McNamara's I'll Be Gone In The Dark and the adjacent TV special, Golden State Killer: It's Not Over. It's...over now! Well, until the trial (and the HBO documentary series, which Mike will no doubt return for also). Authorities took Joseph D'Angelo into custody six weeks after we recorded; last Saturday, Oxygen aired its update special, Golden State Killer: Main Suspect, and Mike and I convened the Carol Daly Appreciation Society's Northeast Chapter to discuss everything from new witness accounts to Daly's bitchin' beehive to tacky sound cues to...the Red Sox? In the Cold Case section, I spend the dog days of August cooling off in the New Yorker archives with a Calvin Trillin crime reader (and an assist from Dan) that appreciates both his trademark bone-dry understatement and the unfortunate relevance of his work years and decades later. Look directly into the camera: it's The Blotter Presents, Episode 63. When Michelle McNamara passed away unexpectedly in 2016, Mike Dunn and I both made sure to pre-order the book she'd left unfinished -- I'll Be Gone In The Dark, on a prolific rapist turned serial killer operating in two areas of California in the late '70s and early '80s. The book showed up at our houses a couple weeks ago, so we decided to turn the pod into a book club for an episode and discuss it...and then Investigation Discovery dropped its two-night, four-part take on the case, The Golden State Killer: It's Not Over, so we looped that in too. Did the show need four parts and three total hours to get its work done? Is its attitude towards "internet sleuths" a little weird? And do you need to watch AND read the book? We dug into the show, the strength of its contributors, and whether it's a good supplement to McNamara's work. Later, I got frustrated at the writing tics an editor should have honored McNamara by cutting, and we talked about pacing, McNamara's skill at setting a scene, and whether Tom Hanks could have committed these crimes. (Ron Howard: "He couldn't have.") Let us know what you think of the show, the book, and the overall investigation on the forums after you listen to an all-new The Blotter Presents.
