EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. For the first half of the 1960s, Akira Kurosawa was arguably at the peak of his career, making masterpiece after masterpiece at a rate that was sure to surpass the heights of his ‘50s glories. But then, after making the most beloved film of his career, he hit a wall. There would be several more great films to come, but for a while there it seemed like the career of one of cinema's most widely celebrated masters had come to an end. In this episode, Bart and Jenna discuss what happened to Kurosawa's second half of the decade, but mostly they relish the opportunity to finally cross off some ‘60s cinema heavy-hitters from their list. From the banging drums of Yojimbo, to the harrowing screams of Red Beard, with some striking and atypical gendai-geki thrillers along the way, the episode is packed with must-see films. Listen as Jenna admires Kurosawa's artistry but occasionally struggles with his pacing, while Bart rapturously discovers that some old favorites are even better than he remembered. The following films are discussed:• The Bad Sleep Well (1960) 悪い奴ほどよく眠る / Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru Directed by Akira Kurosawa Starring Toshiro Mifune, Masayuki Mori, Kyoko Kagawa • Yojimbo (1961) 用心棒 / Yôjinbô Directed by Akira Kurosawa Starring Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Yoko Tsukasa • Sanjuro (1962) 椿三十郎 / Tsubaki Sanjûrô Directed by Akira Kurosawa Starring Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Keiju Kobayashi • High and Low (1963) 天国と地獄 / Tengoku to jigoku Directed by Akira Kurosawa Starring Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Kyōko Kagawa • Red Beard (1965) 赤ひげ / Akahige Directed by Akira Kurosawa Starring Toshiro Mifune, Yūzō Kayama, Reiko Dan • Tora! Cobb, Martin Balsam, Jack Klugman, Jack Warden, and Robert Webber.Plot Summary: "12 Angry Men" is a masterclass in cinematic storytelling, a film that transcends its simple setting to explore the complexities of human nature and the intricacies of the American justice system. Directed by Sidney Lumet, this 1957 classic features a powerhouse performance by Henry Fonda, leading an ensemble cast through a tense, emotionally charged jury deliberation. The plot revolves around twelve jurors tasked with deciding the fate of a young man accused of murder. As the film unfolds almost entirely within the confines of a single jury room, the characters' personal biases, prejudices, and moral dilemmas come to the forefront. Fonda's Juror 8 stands as the lone voice of doubt against an initial consensus of guilt, gradually dismantling the case piece by piece through logical reasoning and relentless questioning."12 Angry Men" remains a timeless reflection on justice, democracy, and the power of reasonable doubt. It's a film that challenges viewers to look beyond the surface and question the assumptions that underpin their beliefs. This is not just a courtroom drama; it is an enduring examination of the moral and ethical struggles that define us all.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Guest Introductions03:38 The Dreaded New Guest Questions12:36 Background for 12 Angry Men - Cast and Recognition16:03 Relationship(s) to 12 Angry Men24:51 What is 12 Angry Men About?31:13 Is 12 Angry Men Too Idealistic or Naive?36:54 Plot Summary38:32 Did You Know?39:56 First Break40:37 Ask Dana Anything50:57 Who Would You Want to Play You in the Movie of Your Life?55:29 The Stanley Rubric56:55 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:05:00 The Stanley Rubric - Impact and Significance01:18:27 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:29:34 Second Break01:39:09 In Memoriam01:42:52 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:48:26 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:52:29 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score/Final Score01:54:07 Remaining Questions for 12 Angry Men02:09:05 Thank You to Our Guests02:12:56 CreditsYou can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the original episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/51-12-angry-men-1957For more on the episode, go to:

12 Angry Men (1957) remains one of the greatest courtroom dramas. Directed by Sidney Lumet from a screenplay by Reginald Rose, the film stars Henry Fonda as the hold-out juror among his peers who are ready to quickly convict a teenager charged with murder in a New York court.  Through a series of dramatic moments, Fonda eventually persuades his fellow jurors that there remains a reasonable doubt about the defendant's innocence, forcing them to address their own preconceptions and prejudices in the process. Fonda (who coproduced the film), teams up with a sensational ensemble cast that includes Lee J. Cobb, Jack Warden, Ed Begley, Martin Balsam, E.G. Marshall, and Jack Klugman. I'm joined by Elkan Abramowitz, one of America's leading criminal defense attorneys, whose many notable clients include Woody Allen, to explore why 12 Angry Men remains essential viewing even as much has changed about the American jury system since it was made.Timestamps:0:00     Introduction3:48     Why 12 Angry Men still resonates today5:15     How juries have changed6:47     Why serving on a jury can be so meaningful10:04   The beyond a reasonable doubt standard15:01   Bigotry and prejudice in the jury room 17:28   Selecting the jury22:59   Group dynamics on juries26:24   The problem with eyewitness cases28:01   Jurors doing outside research30:56   The vanishing jury 34:07   Just down the block: New York v.  Trump39:26   How juries deliberate43:22   Why the film holds up so wellFurther Reading: Asimow, Michael, “'12 Angry Men': A Revisionist View,” 82 Chicago-Kent L. ROGUE COMMENTARY

Hello! Welcome to another edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. On this episode, we take a deep dive into Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 thriller Cape Fear, itself based on John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel The Executioners, in which lawyer Sam Bowden and his family are terrorised by Max Cady, a violent rapist whom Sam testified against in a trial that helped put him in prison for more than a decade. In crafting his own exceptional take on the source materials, screenwriter Wesley Strick twists the knife still further, by making Sam Bowden the lawyer who defended Cady, rather than merely testifying against him, burying testimony that could potentially have exonerated Cady, despite his guilt. In addition, Strick added marital infidelity into the mix, muddying the moral and ethical waters of the story and enhancing the female roles of Sam's wife and daughter, played here by Academy Award® winner Jessica Lange and newcomer Juliette Lewis, as well as adding a brand new character, Lori, played by Scorsese's then girlfriend Illeana Douglas. Leading the cast are Nick Nolte as Sam and Robert De Niro as Max Cady, while three members of Thompson's cast – Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Martin Balsam – make cameo appearances, Elmer Bernstein retools Bernard Herrmann's original score for the new production, and the whole thing is shot by veteran British cinematographer Freddie Francis. Even on paper, it's quite a heady mix. Everything in Scorsese's remake, originally intended to be directed by Steven Spielberg, is turned up to 11, but although many assume that this was Scorsese's influence, much of what we see in the film was present in Strick's very first draft, and I've always been fascinated by the evolution of the story from its relatively straightforward dual source material as straight thriller to grand guignol monster movie, so I was thrilled when Wes kindly agreed to join me for his first full audio commentary for the 1991 film, now that, as he points out, more time has passed since his version was released than the 29 years that passed between the original and remake. Four armed men hijack a New York City subway car and demand a $1 million dollar ransom for the passengers - they are lead by Robert Shaw's Mr. Blue. (That's his codename among the other hijackers) In response, the city's police try to figure out how to respond - they are lead by transit cop Lieutenant Garber played by Walter Matthau.  And what results is a tense action-packed standoff between cops and criminals in a movie which was so influential that it inspired two star-studded remakes in the decades since....including the most recent 2009 remake starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.  The stacked cast for this original version also includes Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo, and James Broderick - it was directed by Joseph Sargent. Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Book Vs. Movie: 12 Angry MenThe 1954 Teleplay Vs. the 1957 Classic FilmThe Margos close out a month of theatre vs. films with 12 Angry Men, which began as a teleplay in 1954 and was adapted to film by Sidney Lumet, with Henry Fonda serving as the lead actor and producer of the 1957 movie. The story centers on a young man who is accused of stabbing his father to death, and a group of 12 jurors must decide if he is guilty of premeditated murder, which carries a death sentence. Writer Reginald Rose came up with the idea while serving jury duty in New York City and found the process “solemn” and “impressive.” The first airing on Studio One was September 20, 1954, with stars Robert Cummings, Franchot Tone, George Veskovec, Joseph Sweeney, and Norman Fell. Rose won an Emmy Award for his screenplay. Henry Fonda produced the wok in 1957 with Sidney Lumet, and the low-budget affair failed to make a profit. Until he died in 1982, Fonda never received any money for his work or performance. But he rightly considered it one of his best. The film stars some of the best character actors of the time and earned multiple Academy Award nominations (Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay) but competed in the same year as The Bridge on the River Kwai, which swept all of the major awards in 1957. In this episode, the Margos discuss the significant differences between the teleplay and the movie and try to decide which we like better. It's our season finale and we were delighted to get back into a cinema for a live screening and podcast recording, our first one since Covid. The venue was the spectacular Garden cinema in Covent Garden, a beautiful art-deco retro venue where we hope to be holding regular screenings in the autumn. As part of their celebrating Film Noir season, we screened and discussed the 1962 psychological noir Cape Fear directed J. Lee Thompson. The film features what is considered one of the most powerfully chilling performances in cinema history: Robert Mitchum as Max Cady. Also starring Gregory Peck, Polly Bergen Lori Martin, Martin Balsam and Telly Savalas, and featuring a Bernard Herrmann score, it's a film that tested social attitudes and the censors with its subject matter. Dario presented the screening with guest Mary Wild (@psycstar on Twitter), the co-host of the Projections Podcast (@ProjectionsPod). As an expert in psychoanalytic film theory it was fantastic to have Mary's critical insight on a film and genre that really does lend itself to psychological reading.  Dario and Neil continue the conversation and also reflect on the 15th season of the podcast. Fan of the show, and one of our favorite people, Michael, requested we watch the movie 7 Days To Vegas on Prime Video.  Mike is a former Angelino, Vegas resident and pro gambler, so we knew he would like a movie about a poker player who takes a prop bet to walk from L.A. to Vegas. But would we like it?Not only did we like it, but in researching the movie, we fell deep into the Van Patten rabbit hole that continued as a 6 degrees of separation through-line for the entire show. We hope you were able to keep up!The movie stars Vince Van Patten, his brother James Van Patten, his real-life wife Eileen Davidson (soap opera legend and Real Housewife of Beverly Hills), and has a cameo from his brother Nels Van Patten.Vince's dad is the veteran actor Dick Van Patten, his aunt is actress Joyce Van Patten. His uncle is producer/director of Perry Mason, Timothy Van Patten. And his cousin is Talia Balsam, daughter of his Aunt Joyce and the celebrated actor Martin Balsam. Talia is the ex-wife of George Clooney and the current wife of John Slattery, who worked, of course, with Rich Sommer on Mad Men, which we'll get to later. It's more about the prop bet than the poker table7 Days to Vegas is a fun, easy movie about a crazy "prop bet" between a down and out actor and a douche-bag director and the crew of degenerate gamblers they play with. Poker players and gamblers will like it. Anyone who has lived on the fringes of Hollywood will recognize the characters as guys we all know. Vimeo describes it as "an edgy comedy based on the true story of the rise and fall of one of Hollywood's biggest poker games. The names have been changed to protect the guilty."We're not sure how much is true, but we know the bet was real because Vince van Patten was the guy who took the gamble. We know first hand that the depiction of the Hollywood private poker scene is spot on. And we know the Van Patten's have been a gambling family for generations. There's a lot of truth in this movie and in it's characters. It never does reach it's potential in our opinion only because we know people just like the ones in this movie, and they are a rich source for comedy, but 7 Days To Vegas is still worth the ride.If you're looking for a feel-good, (The Hangover for guys over 40) 92-minute break from the crazy, check it out on Prime or Vimeo for rent or free on Tubi and Sling.Big thanks to Mike for the recommendation!
