Episode Summary: In this week's episode of What Happens In Between, I sit down with Walela Nehanda, a cultural worker, transplant survivor, and agender writer who created their debut book, Bless the Blood - A Cancer Memoir as an archive for Black, Young, and Disabled people. Walela helps us shift the narrative toward a world rooted in care, interdependence — and ultimately, revolution. How do we define our realities without molding ourselves into a presentation? Join us on today's episode as we explore what it means to be a Cultural Worker x Transplant Survivor x Agender human using art and writing to push a revolutionary culture forward.Question of the Week: When navigating through massive amounts of grief, how do we practice compassion without being rooted in ego? Topics Covered:Walela's definition of a “Cultural Worker”The key ingredients of culture from the lens of a Cultural Worker Survivorship: A new creation of what it means to be aliveWalela's relationship to their body as a cancer and transplant survivorHow relationships can help us realize that we deserve care Interacting with the fluidity of feelings about your writing How we can make ourselves legible in response to feelingsFour questions for our Seedling RoundResources:Audre Lorde's The Cancer JournalsGuest Info:Connect with Walela Nehanda on Instagram. Walela's debut book, Bless the Blood - A Cancer Memoir is an archive for Black, Young, and Disabled people, where feelings can be validated in a way they didn't think was possible. Walela is redefining the next era of the Black Arts Movement and exploring what key ingredients of culture can resolve conflicts in search of survival and progress. If art is a point of political struggle, is culture how we make ourselves legible to each other? In December 2020, Walela underwent a stem cell transplant and spent 31 days in isolation. Walela helps us shift an overly autonomous narrative toward care and interdependence — and ultimately, revolution. They teach us why being patient with our bodies is proof that survivorship has no end date. Unfurling into (self-)acceptance of love. Walela reminds us that within the mess there is creation — and it doesn't have to be coherent. Within it, you can be responsible for the outcome and supported through the process. Join us on today's episode as we explore what it means to be a Cultural Worker x Transplant Survivor x Agender human using art and writing to push a revolutionary culture forward. Hosted on Acast. My guest today is Debra Beal. Debra was one of the women featured in Lisa Levart's photography exhibit “Women of the Ramapough Lenape Nation”. Debra shares her own assimilation experience of how her parents initially downplayed their Native American culture when she was a child, only to pursue and embrace a relationship with her Lenape tribe when she was a young teenager. As her father's bumper sticker read “I was Indian before it was cool to be Indian”. Debra has recently retired from her 33 year career in NY State's Office of Mental Health and is exploring the ongoing delicate balance to integrate the fullness of who she truly is.  Her Indian name “Walela” translates as Hummingbird, which symbolizes Debra's desire to create harmony in the world, by building genuine, compassionate relationships, helping people and being a conduit for healing. Check out the show notes for links to see Debra featured in Lisa's photography exhibit at Bergen Community College, opened through November 24th, as well as in Myles Aronowitz's documentary. I hope this inspires you to learn of the Native people of your land; let's make Thanksgiving more meaningful, by educating ourselves and our extended family of our true history with American Indians. BECOMING NOBODY represents the core arc of Ram Dass’ teachings and life: whether as Dr. Richard Alpert, the eminent Harvard psychologist, or as Ram Dass who serves as a bridge between Eastern and Western philosophies, he has defined a generation of inner explorers and seekers of truth and wisdom. Through his turns as scion of an eminent Jewish family from Boston, rock-star Harvard psychologist, counter-culture rascally adventurer, Eastern holy man, stroke survivor and compassionate caregiver, Ram Dass has worn many hats on his journey, the narrative of which is revealed in this film. His ability to entertain and his sense of humor are abundantly evident in a conversation that brings us around to address the vast question of ultimate freedom. In BECOMING NOBODY, historic clips balance an engaging conversation with director Jamie Catto. We come to understand how our old roles and disguises become increasingly burdensome. The film captures a loving man full of joy, wit, honesty and wisdom, at ease in conversation while sharing his considerable pains and pleasures. The life experiences that have freed him from the attachments of his ‘somebody-ness’ have transformed him into the radiant soul who now inspires a new generation. Producer Raghu Markus joins us to talk about the life and times of Ram Dass, his transformation from Richard Alpert and what it means to love, serve, remember. About the Producer - Raghu Markus: Raghu Markus spent two years in India with Maharaj-ji and Ram Dass. What would you do if you got diagnosed with cancer at the age of 22? Would you crumble...or would you become a Warrior? Well, we all hope our answer would be the latter. On this podcast episode we have the opportunity to hear from a real live Wellness Warrior who has fought (and survived) a fatal cancer diagnosis--all in the last year. Walela takes us on her journey from diagnosis to now--sharing the lifestyle changes she has made since her diagnosis, like becoming vegan, and their effect on her life post-cancer. She gets real about what it’s like to be part of our medical system in the United States today, especially as a black woman with little financial means in the heart of L.A. Walela also talks about her art and activism, and the importance of finding community no matter what stage you’re at in life. She opens up about getting in touch with her spirit during this fight for her life, and embracing--not fighting against--the gifts you’re born with. So, get those tissues (and/or inspiration journal) ready, because Walela’s journey is one for the books.   For more info, visit: www.onadulting.com To connect with Katina about questions, comments, speaker ideas, or sponsorship inquiries please e-mail onadulting@gmail.com. The mayor of all things great, my good friend, rock and roll master shaman and Bhakti legend Shiva Baum comes by to do an episode of IAH. We explore friendship, kirtan and The Church of Rock and Roll and why it still matters. NOTE - a very long Amanda Chantal Bacon intro rant. Jump to 10:22 if you want skip it. Shiva Baum has enjoyed a lifelong love affair with music. When he was 19 he began an internship at New York's Sony Music Studios followed by a summer at Columbia Records under the mentorship of then head of A&R David Khane and has never looked back from there. Shiva went on to discover and develop 90's alt rock band VAST who then signed with Elektra Records. Under the tutelage of Raghu Markus, Shiva then transitioned to influential world music label Triloka Records which was a division of Mercury/Polygram. Eventually Shiva became head of A&R working closely with Krishna Das, Jai Uttal and Bhagavan Das as well other world music artists including the Native American gospel group Walela and southern Cuban salsa phenoms Bio Ritmo. What do you do when you're running a rock music station and having a good ol' time up in Montreal and suddenly you hear someone on tape filled with this bizarrely overwhelming vibration of love and peace and light that you can only describe it as feeling finally "at home"? Simple. Devote your life to their practice.   It's worked out pretty well for Raghu Markus. After meeting Ram Dass in the late 1960s, he went on to spend years in India with him and their spiritual guide, Neem Karoli Baba Maharaji. These last decades have been filled with music and transformational media, having launched Triloka Records and Karuna Music, which included such artists as Krishna Das, Hugh Masekela, Walela, and Jai Uttal. Media projects have featured Ram Dass, Deepak Chopra, and Les Nubians.    Currently the executive director of of Ram Dass's Love Serve Remember Foundation, Raghu Markus also co-hosts the podcast "Mindrolling" on the Mindpod Network, which he helped to create. Listen to them. Learn some truth!   But first, hear him break down the path to all things in Episode 36!
