Do you have any questions, any comments about the episode? Jimanekia would love to hear from you! What does it mean to truly heal from trauma, and how do we create spaces that nurture this journey? As we wrap up the first season of Trauma Queen, we reflect on the profound conversations we've had since 2018, enriched by the invaluable contribution of our talented editor, Chris. After my father's passing, podcasting became a beacon of passion and healing, allowing us to explore the depths of trauma with authenticity and grace. Chris shares their unique perspective from behind the scenes, emphasizing the importance of selecting guests who bring genuine, personal connections to their stories. The road hasn't been easy, navigating personal challenges like relapse, breakups, and loss. Yet, the podcast has been a pillar of focus and resilience, serving as a testament to the power of intention and community support. We critique societal pressures of resilience, particularly within predominantly white spaces, and challenge the platitudes that often accompany this narrative. As someone who grew up navigating the contrasting worlds of Chicago and its suburbs, I share my journey of understanding the true meaning of strength beyond stereotypes and cultural misperceptions.Looking ahead, we're filled with excitement about the future. Our visions include global projects, plans for expansion, and powerful collaborations aimed at addressing trauma and addiction on a larger scale. We share anecdotes about intrusive political messages and humorous gym escapades, always with an eye on personal growth and community impact. As we prepare for new seasons, we're thankful for the trust and stories shared by our guests and listeners. Here's to manifesting blessings and creating spaces that genuinely support our healing journeys.Thank you all for listening. Set a boundary with yourself this week, set a boundary with someone else. If someone else does not respect that boundary. LET THEM LOOSE YOU! Stay hydrated internally and externally. We do not have an ashy family.IG: @The_Trauma_WithinYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetraumawithinJimanekia Ig: @Jimanekia
On this episode of #mensexpleasure, I chat with Jimanekia Eborn. Jimanekia Eborn is a Queer Sexual Assault & Trauma Expert, Trauma Media Consultant, and Comprehensive Sex Educator. She is the host of Trauma Queen - a podcast working to normalize conversations about life's most challenging experiences, from sexual assault to mental health and beyond. Jimanekia is the Founder of Tending The Garden- a nonprofit in service of sexual assault survivors who have been marginalized; offering retreats, online summits, community and education. She is also the co-founder of Cintima, bringing increased representation to the field of Intimacy Coordination in the film industry. Key points: Introductions and background Jimanekia introduces herself, sharing her full name and background. She describes herself as an inquisitive, question-asking person who has experienced various traumas and is now dedicated to supporting others navigating difficult experiences. She outlines her diverse work, including the Jimanekia project focused on assault, her trauma-focused podcast, an intimacy coordinator training company, and her role in the mental health department of a professional wrestling company. Trauma-informed support and advocacy Jimanekia discusses her approach to supporting survivors, emphasizing the importance of allowing them to guide the conversation and decide how they want to share their experiences. She contrasts this with common unhelpful responses that project assumptions or make demands of survivors. Jimanekia also highlights the need for more trauma-informed support, especially for marginalized groups and men, who often face additional stigma and barriers to disclosing. Navigating trauma and consent The conversation explores the complexities around trauma, consent, and gender. Jimanekia and Cam discuss the societal pressures and norms that can prevent men from recognizing or disclosing their experiences of abuse, as well as the tendency to dismiss or trivialize these experiences. They emphasize the importance of creating safe spaces for all survivors to be heard and supported without judgment. Systemic change and accountability Jimanekia and Cam discuss the need for broader systemic changes to address the root causes of violence and trauma, such as harmful gender norms, power imbalances, and lack of accountability. They highlight the responsibility of institutions and communities to proactively create safer environments and provide comprehensive support for survivors, rather than placing the burden on individuals. Closing thoughts Jimanekia closes the conversation by offering encouragement and validation to any male survivors listening, emphasizing that their experiences are not their fault and that there are supportive communities available to them. For years, she have been told, ‘stop dreaming, get back to earth and learn how to become successful with a 9-5 career.' she would listen to these pieces of advice whilst continuing to write songs when everyone else slept. As the years went by, the voice in my head said my purpose in life is connected to music. It told me not to give up, however my fear and insecurities held me back until the 2020 pandemic. It was this time that made me realise how priceless time really is. During lockdown, Ewelina went for long walk along the coast line as she was walking, she came across a stone in the shape of a heart. She believes this was a sign from God to carry on with what I love doing - music. She began working harder and harder more that ever before so I could improve. She has learned to believe in herself, no matter what others said. Ewelina has learned to love herself and embrace her progress, her voice is no unique. I hope you enjoy our time together. Our podcast spotlight interview comes from a while back from episode #56. Sarah Nations, joined me and we had a great conversation. She has face many trails and tribulations along the way, and she is the author of a book called, "Trauma Queen." Please go back and check out the entire episode when you have a moment. Bodies are Telling is a two part exploration of the often complex relationship between the body and the self, told by Jimanekia Eborn through an intimate, personal reflection of her own journey to self-discovery. What are the psychological effects of growing up in a body that is constantly objectified? How do outside influences and expectations impact the way we perceive ourselves? What does it mean to reconnect to our body and heal after experiencing sexual assault? This started out as a podcast discussing bodies that have been impacted by shame and guilt. But it turned into a candid sharing of deep truths; an examination of personal trauma and what it's like to come out on the other side. While also calling in others' journeys and ideals around their own bodies, this is a story that, sadly, many will listen to and be able to connect with, but, hopefully, it is also a story that many can discover a place of understanding, realisation, and, ultimatley, hope. TW: This series mentions sexual assault and eating disorders. Let's face it - we all have trauma, deep-rooted stories and beliefs we have about ourselves that aren't necessarily ours. Some of us heal these things, some of us don't, but what we can all empathize with is that sometimes, life's stressors can take their toll on our mental wellbeing. We're talking about mental health today, in a very raw and real way, with Carissa Harrison. Carissa is a luxury art saleswoman and the host of comedy and mental health podcast... Meet my Mess! She was born in Vancouver, Canada but doesn't like to stay in one place. At 22 years old, Carissa values world travel, deep conversations, self-work and above all enjoying what life has to offer. Join Carissa and I as we go into: Why happiness is the sum of all things in our lives put together Bringing authenticity to hard conversations on her Meet My Mess Podcast Why therapy is important and challenging the stigma around it How to handle the really hard things life throws at you Want to chat about launching or growing your podcast? My triggers are not your shortcomings. My trauma responses are a reflection of me, not you. Some of the most incredible people we know, & some of the most fucked up people we know, usually have one thing in common: significant trauma. What determines whether a person is resilient enough to choose the incredible path? There are several answers to this, but a community of people who don't bail when shit gets hard is at the top. Cancelling people for responding from unhealed trauma is anti-human & unproductive. Gently holding humans accountable & offering a safe space for them to process the trauma can make all the difference in the world. However, not making other peoples' trauma responses about us takes practice, it's an exercise in deep awareness. Instead of reacting to chaos with chaos, what if we started consciously responding & showing up for each other like this: "hey, I see that your nervous system is activated & this isn't really about me. I understand if you need to run, but if you choose to stay, this is a safe space to process this feeling. You are safe, you are loved & if it feels good I'll hold you & we can breathe through it together.” "Triggers” (nervous system activations) are information. They are an invitation to explore further or move through something, but in order to do that we have to regulate our nervous system. Triggers are our responsibility, not land mines for our loved ones to avoid. Trauma puts our brains on alert, constantly scanning our environment for signal that we are unsafe. Safety is something we experience in the body, when our nervous system is regulated. It's not something we create in our minds. This is why limbic system therapies are so effective in healing trauma. Like safety, trauma is also experienced physically, in the body. Recognizing activation & regulating the physiological response creates a safe environment for our bodies to process our feelings… which is way better than the host of other options that unhealed versions of us choose. Autonomic nervous system regulation is paramount in maintaining mental & physical health. (This is what HRV measures, autonomic flexibility.) The dopest thing about it? You can learn how to do it for free. YOU are your own medicine.
In this episode I talk with Behavioral Health Therapist from Oregon, Christy Collins, aka Trauma Queen Christy, about how life can be interesting yet difficult. I know everything happens for a reason, but your childhood can seriously mold the person you were called to be. We talk about the different kinds of therapy, how trauma can impact each person differently, why everyone needs therapy, and how to use your story to change the lives of others. This is such a great interview. I hope you love our conversation as much as I did! Jimanekia Eborn, trauma specialist and founder of Tending the Garden, joins us again to process her life story from the previous episode. After witnessing her mother's murder at age one, Jimanekia's inner child has had a lot of healing to do. But she candidly tells us that self-healing has not always been on the forefront of her mind. In her early years, many times, she admits to going off course down roads that led to more trauma for herself. Other times, through her work in the mental health industry, she has put another survivor's healing before her own. Regardless, she explains that she has always had the instinct to “make her mommy proud” and so both her self-healing and her vision for helping others has persevered. In this episode, we talk about everything from her unexpected connection to pro wrestling, her philosophy on the importance of positive destruction along with her desire to “fuck up and rebuild the sex ed community”, a rally cry that all three of us can get behind for the good of humankind. Finally, she fleshes out her vision for the future that includes continuing her crucial life's work with Tending the Garden. Please join us for another captivating episode of Open Deeply. Jimanekia Eborn, who refers to herself as a “child of trauma”, takes us on her powerful life journey from witnessing her mother being brutally murdered at the age of one to becoming an inspiring expert in the areas of sexual trauma support and sex education with a special love for helping those with marginalized identities. Her childhood included many struggles related to class, race, and bodily autonomy. By age twelve, she had already learned that Black bodies are commodified which contributed to her difficulties with internalized body shame and her choice to keep her sexual awakening very private. Despite never being kissed until age seventeen, college was a game changer. Here, she discovered the “power of her pussy”. She organically found non-monogamy and even experienced her first play party. After college, Jimanekia traversed the mental health field, finally finding her soul's love while holding space for sexual abuse survivors, helping them heal while concurrently educating on healthy, shame free sex. TW: Mental Health We are on Week 9 of our New Year - New Jokes series. Today we are talking about something I think is so important to the comedy community, and that is mental health. I am so excited to share my Interview with Christy Collins with Trauma Queen Christy! We are talking all about dancing with our demons, and the untented consequences to our mental health when we used our past trauma's as motivation for our material. https://www.facebook.com/traumaqueenchristy https://www.instagram.com/trauma.queen.christy/ -- Again, huge thank you to Christy Collins from Trauma Queen Christy for talking about the intersection between artistry and mental health. Also, shout to Beers and Business Cards and Craft Kitchen and Brewery for their support of the New Years New Jokes seminar this year! This week, I have a challenge for you that is not a writing exercise this week. I want you to use that time to look into the idea of self care. What does that mean for you? And, check in, honestly, about your mental health? This is actually coming at a unique time for me. I recently opened up to my own doctor about my anxiety and how it was effecting my life. It's totally okay to talk to you doctor about what's going on. So, I want to encourage you to be honest about what's going on. There is no shame is taking care of yourself. And, I promise, it's not going to make you a worse comics. So, this week I want you to think about taking care of you and what you need. Espeically during these fucked up times, right? Take care of you. Take your vitamins, take care of yourself, and don't be a dick on stage. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comedy-mom/message

Welcome to Season 3 of horizontal! This is the podcast of intimacies recorded while reclining. It’s still Slow Radio. It’s still consensual eavesdropping. It’s still us lying down, sharing secrets, in your ears. But while the first two seasons had me lying down with only one person at a time, season three will often add another guest to my pillow. I’ll be lying down with people who are in some kind of relationship with one another. And I intend to encompass as many types of human relationships as I can. They might be friends, family members, teammates, mentors and acolytes, business partners, lovers, exes, metamours, co-parents… You know what this means, right? That’s right: This season is going to be a Lila sandwich. My first two guests of Season 3, Dan and Jimanekia are a manager and her client, as well as friends. Jimanekia is a Sex Educator, Queer media consultant, Sexual Assault expert, and Trauma Specialist. She is widely-studied and deeply-informed. Her work comes from the well of her own transformations, her personal navigation through profound pain and culture shock after culture shock, and the fierce desire to protect others from suffering at the intersection of sexual assault, race, class, privilege, and trauma. She is the host of the podcast Trauma Queen, a mini-series about healing for assault survivors and their allies. She speaks with survivors, therapists, partners, educators, and experts. Her podcast a gift to the world, a resource for survivors and those who love them, and, everyone with a beating heart, really, with each episode providing actionable, practical steps. She teaches without teaching, educates without educating. You’ll see. Find Jimanekia on her website Traumaqueen.love and you can follow her on Twitter and Instagram @Jimanekia. Dan — also known as Dannielle — Owens is a queer Femmeboy activist, and Jimanekia’s manager. Dannielle also manages two other previous horizontal guests, Stevie Boebi, the go-to lesbian sexpert on YouTube, episodes 42 & 43, and Meghan Tonjes, singer-songwriter and accidental leader of the booty revolution, episodes 24 & 25. Dan uses the pronouns he/him as well as she/her, interchangeably. Let me model how that might go for you: He is the CEO of genderfluid clothing label & inclusive marketplace Radimo, which plays with gender the way I love to see gender played with, and focuses on directly supporting clothing made by queer, trans, black, POC, plus-size humans, women, and disabled small business owners. Radimo’s pieces are modeled by folx with different body types, skin tones, and gender identities. You can find the whole line on the website Radimo.LA … She engages in all sorts of glorious gender fuckery, on Instagram with the handle @boygodking , on YouTube as Dannielle Owens-Reid, and her forthcoming book, “From One Cult To The Next,” is a memoir about ending toxic relationships and the healing thereafter. Many of you know that all the part twos of each episode are available exclusively to patrons of $5 a month and up. I’ve revamped my Patreon tiers with shiny new perks, and the upgrades will all go into effect next Friday, April 12th, alongside the release of part two of my conversation with Dan & Jimanekia. If you become a patron of $5 a month in the next seven days, you will be grandfathered in with access to The Full Horizontal, and my gratitude for being an early patron of the horizontal arts! After April 12th, the first tier of patronage will be $10 a month, and it will include: access to all the part twos & the secret patrons Facebook group with behind-the-scenes access, along with a monthly video with curated intimacy tips! If you adore the love poem of the month, fret not, O patron my patron, it will be part of the video! The perks for $25, $50, and $100 a month are even more delectable, and include my favorite new perk, in which I will plan a monthly date for you! With yourself or with a friend or a family member or a lover. Check Patreon.com/horizontalwithlila for all the saucy details. I’m also running a sweet little special offer. If you become a $10/month patron by the end of April, I’ll send you a handwritten thank you love note and a bit of horizontal swag (maybe a magnet, maybe a bumper sticker, maybe something else) in the actual MAIL. Sigh! I still Love getting mail as much as I did when I used to send bedazzled letters back and forth with my friend from summer camp in 1995. Also, I’ve been told that my handwriting is “ridiculous,” “astonishing,” and “like a font!” These are actual reviews, with no exaggeration. In this first part of this episode with Dan and Jim, we tell our origin stories, which include loneliness, divorce, cancer, sex-positivity, intimacy, braces, bio dads and adoptive dads, relocating 10 times by the age of 9, latchkey kids, alcoholism, bipolar disorder / intervention, manipulation, therapy PTSD / advice columns, gaslighting, inclusivity, gender neutrality / queerness, microaggressions, racism, sluthood, LGBTQIA in the black community, rape, eating disorders, being an empath, burnout, sex ed ….and how we came to possess our superpowers. We cover a lot of ground in this one. We’d better get into it. Come lie down with us in Los Angeles, California. *** Chad Michael Snavely has edited every horizontal episode since the beginning of Season 2. He’s a podcast impresario, and you can find his whole body of work on chadmichael.com. Alan Markley composed the intro music, and he’s busy being a rock star on Instagram as plasticcannons. Shana Shay created my saucy cover art, and you can hire her on 99 Designs. Next week’s episode, part two of my episode with Dan and Jimanekia, in which we dig into their relationship with each other, is available exclusively to patrons of the horizontal arts. Remember that if you’d like access to The Full Horizontal for $5/month, you’ll need to become a patron before April 12th, next Friday. And if you become a $10/month patron before the end of April, I’ll send you a handwritten thank you love note in my glorious handwriting, plus a bit of horizontal swag! Until next week: may you have someone (or someones) to love, something to do, and so many things to look forward to.
