182 - Ghost World In this episode of Reel Comic Heroes, we step into the offbeat, sardonic world of Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World (2001), adapted from Daniel Clowes' cult graphic novel. We follow the misadventures of Enid and Rebecca, two recent high school graduates navigating the uncertain summer before adulthood, drifting between cynicism, friendship, and the awkwardness of growing up. We dig into the film's unique blend of dry humor and melancholy, the pitch-perfect performances by Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, and a career-defining turn from Steve Buscemi, as well as how the movie translates Clowes' indie comic sensibilities onto the screen. Along the way, we explore the themes of alienation, authenticity, and the strange comedy of human connection. Whether you're a longtime fan of indie comics, or just discovering why Ghost World continues to resonate over 20 years later, this episode is a deep dive into one of the most unconventional comic book adaptations ever made. Send us a textWelcome back to DMR!Sinners (2025) is a bold, genre-blending film that fuses supernatural horror with rich musical drama, all set in the haunting backdrop of 1930s Mississippi. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie follows twin brothers—played by Michael B. Jordan—who return to their hometown to open a juke joint and escape their violent pasts. What unfolds is a slow-burning, atmospheric story layered with blues, gospel, and soul music that doesn't just underscore the scenes—it drives the emotion and tension. The visuals are lush and haunting, and the story avoids cheap scares in favor of deeper psychological and cultural unease. What makes Sinners stand out is its emotional depth and originality. Instead of relying on franchise familiarity or overused horror tropes, it dives into themes of redemption, racial trauma, faith, and family legacy with sincerity and craft. Jordan delivers a nuanced dual performance, and the supporting cast brings authenticity to the story's gritty, soulful tone. Critically acclaimed and a box office hit, Sinners has earned major awards and resonated with audiences for being more than just a horror film—it's a powerful, character-driven experience that lingers long after the credits roll. This film has a near perfect score on RT from both the critics and audience. By 2016, the Star Wars galaxy was splintered. Disney had bought the keys to the kingdom, and The Force Awakens had opened the floodgates of nostalgia; fans were debating whether the magic still remained. Enter Rogue One, a gritty, grounded war film that not only connected the dots between trilogies but also reminded us what sacrifice actually looks like in a galaxy far, far away. Our Rogue One (2016) Review could be our boldest Star Wars exploration yet. Listen to find out.On this week's Born to Watch, the team rallies on Yavin 4 to break down the boldest entry in Disney's Star Wars canon. Whitey brings the heat with tales of midnight screenings and family rewatches, calling Rogue One the "Everest" of modern Star Wars. Damo, initially underwhelmed, admits it took a second viewing to appreciate the depth and daring of this standalone story. And Bones? Let's just say he came armed with more trivia than a Death Star databank, from K-2SO's comic origins to what Chirrut Îmwe's staff is really made of.The episode begins with the squad sharing their first impressions, ranging from faulty cinema projectors to kids ditching mid-movie, before diving into the film's iconic trailer. Vader's breath. The Rogue One theme. Mon Mothma's icy resolve. It still rocks. The boys dissect what made the trailer work and laugh at the glaringly absent "I rebel" line that somehow vanished between teaser and final cut.Naturally, the Born to Watch crew doesn't just scratch the surface. They dive deep into what makes Rogue One so special: a fresh cast of characters who aren't chosen ones or lightsaber prodigies, but ordinary rebels making impossible choices. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) gets major love for her no-frills attitude, while Diego Luna's Cassian Andor earns newfound respect thanks to the phenomenal Andor series, which Whitey all but begs Damo to finally watch. And then there's K-2SO, the sardonic droid voiced by Alan Tudyk (aka "Two Dicks”, don't ask, just listen). Easily one of the funniest characters in the franchise, K-2 delivers punchlines and gut-punches with equal finesse. The same goes for Donnie Yen's Chirrut and Wen Jiang's Baze, a dynamic duo who bring martial arts, mysticism, and machine guns to the battlefield.Ben Mendelsohn's Director Krennic gets the Aussie shoutout treatment, with the team praising his imperial smugness and exquisite cape work. Forest Whitaker's Saw Gerrera? A source of debate, gasps, and conspiracy theories, is he a Vader prototype? A puffed-up Darth Hipster? Either way, "Bo Gullet" lives rent-free in everyone's head, even if no one quite understands what he's doing there. And then comes the scene. You know the one. The Vader hallway massacre. It's cinematic perfection, a horror movie, action flick, and fan fantasy rolled into one red lightsaber ignition. The team agrees: it might be the greatest single moment in Star Wars history. Period. From there, it's time for Good, Bad, and Ugly, where the sets, the new worlds (Scarif, Jedha), and the grounded stakes all get high praise. The team relishes how Rogue One finally explains the Death Star's ridiculous design flaw, praises its minimal use of nostalgia, and wonders how Jyn Erso climbs that 500-metre tower without even puffing.Legacy-wise, Rogue One is a billion-dollar box office hit that somehow still feels underrated. No Skywalkers. No prophecy. Just a desperate, beautiful mission and a finale that dares to kill every single lead. The episode wraps with laughs, trivia, a tease of a Star Wars Trivial Pursuit rematch, and a reminder that Rogue One is the rare Disney-era film that actually elevates what came before.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Rogue One the best Star Wars movie since the original trilogy?Would you rather pilot an X-Wing or be one with the Force like Chirrut? Leaving Las Vegas (1995) is Nicolas Cage at his most raw and devastating and he delivers a performance that won him an Oscar and became one of the bleakest love stories ever put on film. Cage plays Ben Sanderson, a man who moves to Las Vegas to drink himself to death, where he meets Elisabeth Shue in a career-defining role as a sex worker who chooses to love him anyway. In this episode, Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin break down Cage's Oscar-winning performance, Elisabeth Shue's shocking transformation, and the film's unflinching depiction of addiction, despair, and fleeting connection. They also discuss Roger Ebert's surprising praise, the film's cultural impact, and why Leaving Las Vegas still resonates nearly 30 years later.

Spoiler warning: we go deep. If you loved the short (or hated it), this one's for you.We break down the film's biggest beats, standout filmmaking choices, and what this means for the Jason mythos. Here is the link to the short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_dEbWGRXsgIG - @thehorrorcutshow | @HewittGPro | @StephenkerrActor_Performer FB - Facebook.com/profile.php?id=61573701383591
On this episode, Jason G and I review 'Ballerina', a spinoff set in the 'John Wick' universe between chapters three and four. We praise the film's action, calling it some of the best in the series, with standout scenes, such as a flamethrower sequence. I mention struggling to fully buy Ana de Armas as an action star, while Jason suggests the director's style may emphasize looks over grit. We also note the inclusion of Lance Reddick's character, filmed before his passing, and appreciate how the action feels intense but more grounded compared to other over-the-top set pieces in this universe. We give the movie an overall rating of 7 to 7.8 out of 10. The conversation concludes with thoughts on the box office and franchise. Despite a $90 million budget, the film made about $132 million worldwide, which may not cover total costs. However, it is performing well on VOD platforms. Lionsgate has not confirmed a 'Ballerina' sequel, but 'John Wick 5' is in development with Keanu Reeves returning. Thoughts? Comments? Do so on the blog here. What is the greatest year in movie history? That’s the question this week! Mike breaks down what he believes to be the Top 5 years of all-time and his favorite 5 films from each of those years. In the Movie Review, Mike gives his spoiler-free thoughts on Weapons starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanishes on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. Mike talks about why director Zach Cregger is a new king of modern horror, if he thinks the movie is over hyped and the secret to Warner Brothers making box office history. In the Trailer Park, Mike dives into Predator: Badlands which stars Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. It is set in the future on a remote planet, where a young Predator outcast from his clan, finds an unlikely ally and embarks on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary. Take us with you for one last beach trip before summer ends here at Breakfast All Day. It's sort of an Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday with the mix of movie reviews we have for you. We begin with "Honey Don't," Ethan Coen's second solo outing without brother Joel. We both love the Coens, but we don't really agree on this. Margaret Qualley stars as a lesbian private eye investigating a suspicious car accident in Bakersfield, California. Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans and Charlie Day co-star. In theaters. Next is "Splitsville," which we both loved. It's an indie rom-com focusing on two married couples and their twisted, intertwined lives. The understated meanness is delightful, but there's a vulnerability underneath. Dakota Johnson, Adria Arjona, Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin star. Covino directed from a script he and Marvin co-wrote. In theaters. Then we turn to the Devo documentary, titled appropriately, "Devo." If you love the '80s new wave band, you'll appreciate this breezy but super informative look at how they came together and created their signature look and sound. Plus the music is so great: Both of us feel lucky to have seen Devo in concert, and you should definitely check them out live if you can. Streaming on Netflix. Finally, it was a lengthy Movie News LIVE!, as we discussed the dismaying state of film journalism. Plus: sing-along "KPop Demon Hunters," Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein," and we remember the legendary Terence Stamp, who died this week at 87. Thanks for joining us. * Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
