For a man who has been there and pretty much done it all in the Australian music industry, Mark Lizotte - or Diesel to his friends - is one hell of a humble guy.First snapping necks with Johnny Diesel & The Injectors in the mid to late 1980s, the 90s saw Diesel launch a solo career that has seen his career progress in a steady trajectory that is a testament to the workman-like way in which he goes about his business. Singer, guitarist, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Diesel has mastered all aspects of his craft with a youthful exuberance and genuine love for music that is as infectious as it is rare.After releasing his 17th studio album Bootleg Melancholy in 2023, Diesel could be forgiven for being a touch pickier about where, when and how he plays, but by talking to the man, you get the feeling such thoughts are barely a whisper in his subconsciousness. Instead, Diesel has spent much of this year on the road, culminating with his current By Request Tour, which sees fans and audience members choosing his nightly set list in a performance where it is guaranteed no two shows will be alike.But rather than hang his guitar on the rack at the completion of this successful run of shows, Diesel recently announced his intentions to fire it back up again for round 2 early next year, with another 21 shows added from January through to April. And seeing how it is blatantly obvious Diesel doesn't know what to do with his spare time, HEAVY jumps at the chance to keep him busy by accepting the invitation to have a yarn about life on the road. We start by pointing out that he must be a glutton for punishment to basically turn straight back around and head out for another run of shows."I hope it's not punishment," Diesel laughed. "No, it's been really fun, I have to say. I've really enjoyed these ones. I think in the back of my mind, I was always like, well, if we're going to do regionals, let's do some cities too. Take it to the big smoke."We get a bit cheeky and ask if the songs for each night's set list are 100% as voted by the fans, or if he sometimes takes liberties with what he feels like or doesn't feel like playing."I try to attach a person's story or name to every song," he smiled. "I've got the analytics come to me in a document, and it's all very… It's great, actually. They've got graphs of songs and which ones have been chosen, and I can see which ones are more popular than others on particular nights. It's a lot of information for me to digest. And along with that, I think the thing that is most usable and intangible are the comments that people write about why they want that song."In the full interview, we ask Diesel if there have been many surprise requests, any that he has seen come up and cringed, and if he can see any trends between different eras of his career. New data released by Geotab Inc. ("Geotab"), a global leader in connected vehicle solutions and asset management, reveals that Irish and UK commercial fleets reduced their travel distances by almost 10% in the week before Christmas compared to other European fleets. However, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions increased by 9% during the holiday period. The findings, based on data from fleet vehicles across seven European countries during November and December 2024, highlight how the holiday shopping surge intensifies operational pressure on delivery services, resulting in more frequent stops, shorter routes and longer idling times. Across Europe, fuel consumption increased by 50%, amounting to an additional 160,00 litres of fuel burned. Idling times rose by 9% compared to pre-holiday levels, contributing to higher emissions and underscoring the negative environmental impact of increased consumption during the period. In Ireland and the UK alone, fuel consumption was up by 9%. While efforts have been made to electrify fleets across Europe, with the number of electric vehicles in operation steadily growing over previous years, Geotab's data shows that during peak periods only 12% of deliveries are completed by electric vehicles. Despite an industry-wide push for electrification, internal combustion engine vehicles still handle the majority of deliveries, leading to the notable increase in C02 emissions during this time. The surge in demand for fast, convenient deliveries not only impacts the environment, but also places considerable financial pressure on fleet operators. Across Europe, fleets incurred an additional €28,910 in fuel costs during Black Friday week alone. "Our data shows how the holiday period is a universally busy time," said Edward Kulperger, Senior Vice President EMEA at Geotab. "While people rush to find the perfect present for their loved ones, the immense operational challenges that come with that are often overlooked. As fleets work hard to keep up with the surge, there are often added operational and financial burdens, as well as challenges to maintain sustainability initiatives. Although the industry has been working hard to turn towards a greener future, the majority of Black Friday and Christmas deliveries are made by fuel-powered vehicles, putting into question the viability of conveniences like one-click shopping and next-day delivery." With Irish drivers making more frequent stops to deliver Christmas gifts nationwide, C02 emissions and fuel costs continue to rise, a trend likely to repeat itself this year. This presents a critical, recurring challenge for fleet operators and highlights the need for further electrification and sustainable logistics solutions to achieve greener holiday seasons in the future. In this episode we talk about other treatments for depression. Depression doesn't take away your drive. It just leaves you stuck in park. Idling. Therapy and medications are the primary treatments for depression. This leaves out many other treatments and doesn't address habits we often have that can massively dilute the efficacy of any amount of therapy and meds. We're going to give you about 13. Depression, apathy, and just feeling blue and numb, are very real issues affecting all of us. We are all on the spectrum, we're all coping to a level, and even when we are greatly inspired in one area of our life we can be dealing with aspects of depression in others. No treatments are guarantees, but all are highly relevant in combating these issues. We get through six of them in this episode and continue on in the next episode to cover the rest. A quick note of relevance I feel we should have started off with, is...motive. Until you have a clear motive to pull out of depression, few of any treatments will matter.
