A chilling case unfolded in the heartland of Pennsylvania this week, as a couple, including a corrections officer, was charged with the death of a young boy who was reportedly subjected to horrific abuse. Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli made the unsettling announcement on July 28, highlighting the relentless pursuit of justice for the innocent victim. Lauren Maloberti, the boy's adoptive mother, and her husband, Jacob Maloberti, a correctional officer by profession, are now facing a slew of charges that include criminal homicide, first-degree murder, and endangering the welfare of children. Moreover, both of them have been slapped with two counts of aggravated assault of a child and criminal conspiracy, according to official reports. The victim was identified as 5-year-old Landon Maloberti. On January 30, the child was found unconscious at home and promptly rushed to Allegheny Health Network Hempfield. His condition rapidly deteriorated, necessitating a transfer to Children's Hospital for specialized medical treatment. Despite the medical team's best efforts, Landon succumbed to his severe injuries a week later, on February 7. DA Ziccarelli detailed the shocking extent of the abuse Landon suffered during a press conference covered by WTAE-TV. She reported that the child sustained blunt force trauma to his head, neck, torso, and extremities. His body was marred by a cruel tapestry of bruises, some fresh, others in different stages of healing, a silent testament to the sustained and systematic abuse. Even more alarming was the report of "prolonged and intensive medical interventions" preceding his untimely demise. A physician, having reviewed the case, made a grim determination: Landon had been subject to "multiple episodes of physical abuse," further compounded by at least two forms of emotional maltreatment. The inflicted injuries were of such severity that they caused "substantial pain," impairing the child's basic functions, including standing, eating, drinking, and even consciousness. In a devastating verdict, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner classified Landon's death as a homicide. Further investigation led to disturbing revelations about the defendants' behavior after Landon's injuries. A criminal complaint acquired by WPXI-TV revealed that the accused had allegedly waited a full day before seeking medical help for the severely injured boy. The couple appeared relatively unphased by the situation. Lauren Maloberti attempted to explain away Landon's condition to medical staff, claiming he was "wobbly" due to a previous COVID-19 infection. Medical staff at Children's Hospital painted a tragic picture. They disclosed that Landon had suffered three distinct brain bleeds, a critical condition that had effectively "obliterated" his brain. Further inquiries conducted by the police included interviews with the victim's siblings. As per WPXI reports, the children stated that their mother regularly disciplined Landon, who, according to her, was "hard to learn his lesson." She allegedly used an open hand, a wooden spoon, or a spray bottle to administer the physical punishment. Disturbingly, coworkers reported Lauren Maloberti openly expressing her disdain for her adopted son, stating she "hated" him and found him "hard to love." The detectives reportedly examined text exchanges between the accused couple from April 2022 through February 2023. The messages were allegedly filled with overt expressions of disdain for Landon. Further distressing information emerged when Landon's maternal grandmother told police that her daughter had stopped her from seeing the boy because "he was bad." Even during the festive period, the grandmother was not allowed to see her grandson. In a solemn statement, DA Ziccarelli said, "Tragically, Landon suffered abuse and trauma over the span of his short life. We intend to prosecute this case with the dignity and honor Landon deserves." Her sentiments were echoed by Delmont Chief of Police T.J. Klobucar, who admitted that in his 25-year career, he had never faced an incident of this magnitude. This shocking case is a grim reminder of the vital importance of vigilance and reporting suspected child abuse, to protect our society's most vulnerable members. As Americans try to digest what President Biden said in the State of the Union, some Americans aren't happy with Biden. Progressive Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is criticizing the Democratic leadership on changing rules when it comes to social distancing and mask requirements. Is Biden losing support from the left-progressives? The “Black Lives Matter” movement is also upset with the president for police remarks; “Fund them!” Is Biden losing support from the BLM movement? WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh aired a very awkward and accidental photo of President Biden when talking about “a 71-year-old man was accused of inappropriately touching a 12-year-old girl …” Was this really an “accident”? Tyler and Hilary Avolia join Tim to talk about the time a spontaneous moment at a hockey game when Tyler was two turned into a meme that is now known around the world. In this episode, we look back to the time a local TV news clip from a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey game in 2014, made Tyler's baby face one of the most shared memes on the Internet. The topic? Meme culture. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/Buckle_Up_Baby_auphonic.mp3 It's 2014 and as the Pittsburgh Penguins liked to say, it was a hockey night in Pitttsburgh. A two-year old Tyler Avolia was very excited. He was with his mom and dad in the one place he'd want to be, watching hockey. Hilary says that her son liked hockey for as long as she could remember, but that year, the two-year old took it to a new level when he received hockey equipment for Christmas. Skates and a stick and hockey nets. Hilary said they tried getting Tyler interested in baseball, but all he cared about was hockey. She said he even learned the words to the National Anthem by watching hockey on TV every time the Penguins played. And he insisted on singing the Anthem before playing any hockey himself. Tyler's family were season ticket holders for the Pittsburgh Penguins and went to quite a few games that year. So it was that on one night, after a big goal, the Penguin's television cameras scanned the arena for crowd reaction and found Tyler sitting on his mom's lap. The baby-faced toddler had a fierce expression on his face, as he pumped his fists in the air and let out a scream in excitement. Later in the season, when the Penguins and their star captain Sidney Crosby were battling it out with the Philadelphia Flyers, Crosby scored a goal and the arena went wild. Tyler and his mom Hilary today. By then, the video crew in the booth had already cued up that video of young Tyler pumping his fists. Then something unplanned happened. The Penguins' announce and former player, Phil Bourque commented on Crosby's goal by saying, “Buckle up, baby! You gotta be kiddin' me.” He said this right when the video of Tyler flashed across the video screen in the arena and on TV. The juxtaposition between Bourque's words and that video of Tyler went viral almost instantly. The Penguins even decided to make the words, Buckle Up Baby, their team slogan for the playoff run. But according to Hilary, that was just the beginning. It's one thing to have a viral video, and another for your video to become a widely popular GIF and a Meme, which is the case here. What is Meme Culture? A meme is a relatable graphic or video clip with text. Memes usually originate as viral videos like the one we're talking about in this episode. Most memes have lines of text that overlay the video to express a particular message. You see them on social media messages and in texts. They are used to express a feeling or a gesture. If you want to thank someone, or congratulate them, or say hi, or wink at someone, or applaud something, there's a meme for that. In fact, there are many memes for just about any occasion. People who want to apologize for something and who can't find the words, may use a GIF of a sad puppy. The term ‘meme' was introduced in 1976 by the famous British biologist Richard Dawkins. As memes became more popular, meme culture emerged. Memes have now become so common on social media, they're replacing words and emoji as a way to communicate in everyday communication. The juxtaposition between Bourque’s words and that video of Tyler went viral almost instantly. The Penguins even decided to make the words, Buckle Up Baby, their team slogan for the playoff run. But according to Hilary, that was just the beginning. It’s one thing to have a viral video, and another for your video to become a widely popular GIF and a Meme, which is the case here. What is Meme Culture? A meme is a relatable graphic or video clip with text. Memes usually originate as viral videos like the one we’re talking about in this episode. Most memes have lines of text that overlay the video to express a particular message. You see them on social media messages and in texts. They are used to express a feeling or a gesture. If you want to thank someone, or congratulate them, or say hi, or wink at someone, or applaud something, there’s a meme for that. In fact, there are many memes for just about any occasion. People who want to apologize for something and who can’t find the words, may use a GIF of a sad puppy. The term ‘meme’ was introduced in 1976 by the famous British biologist Richard Dawkins. As memes became more popular, meme culture emerged. Memes have now become so common on social media, they’re replacing words and emoji as a way to communicate in everyday communication.
