Is type 2 diabetes an incurable, progressive disease, as many doctors claim? The research says no. There is a simple, food-based approach that has been quietly studied since the 1970s, and it has helped people get their A1C back to normal without Metformin, without insulin, and without giving up a social life. In this episode, Chris Reade, entrepreneur and author of Beating Diabetes, shares his own story: his A1C jumped from normal to 9.1 in a single year, his doctor handed him a prescription and told him diabetes was an incurable, progressive disease. He walked out of that office and decided to find another way. Four months later, his A1C was back in the normal range. No Metformin. No insulin. No extreme diet. s the food industry intentionally misleading the public about sweeteners, health, and what people are really putting into their bodies every day? In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Habib Skaff and Jennifer Allen join Michael Jaco to break down the growing concerns surrounding artificial sweeteners, hidden food industry practices, inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and how many products marketed as “healthy” may actually be accelerating aging and damaging long-term wellness. The conversation focuses on how modern food manufacturing and processed ingredients have transformed the way people eat while simultaneously contributing to rising levels of chronic illness, fatigue, inflammation, skin deterioration, blood sugar imbalance, and metabolic stress. Dr. Skaff explains why many consumers have been conditioned to trust labels, marketing campaigns, and nutritional narratives that often fail to tell the full story about what certain sweeteners and additives may actually be doing to the body at the cellular level. The discussion dives deeply into the science behind healthier alternatives and why ingredients such as Allulose are attracting growing attention for their potential role in supporting metabolic balance and healthier aging without some of the concerns associated with conventional sweeteners. Jennifer Allen also shares how Skin Wisdom approaches wellness and skincare differently by focusing not just on appearance, but on the deeper relationship between inflammation, nutrition, cellular health, and the visible condition of the skin itself. According to Dr. Skaff, skin health is often one of the clearest reflections of what is happening internally within the body. When inflammation, oxidative stress, poor nutrition, and metabolic dysfunction are present for long periods of time, the skin frequently becomes one of the first places where those effects begin to show. Throughout the conversation, the focus remains on helping people become more informed consumers, better understand how the body responds to different ingredients, and avoid being manipulated by industries driven more by profit than long-term health outcomes. This episode explores the intersection of food science, anti-aging research, cellular wellness, metabolic health, and modern skincare while encouraging listeners to question mainstream nutritional narratives and become more intentional about what they consume daily. At its core, this discussion is about reclaiming personal health, understanding how modern systems influence the body, and learning how better choices can improve not only appearance — but energy, vitality, and long-term well-being.

Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses a listener question about whether agave nectar can contribute to obesity like high-fructose corn syrup, arguing that regular use of sweeteners—including agave, honey, monk fruit, stevia, aspartame, sucralose, allulose, and sugar alcohols—can maintain sweet cravings, spike insulin, and contribute to weight-loss plateaus, with added concerns such as microbiome effects, GI upset, and aspartame's neurotoxicity. She notes insulin's role in fat storage and blood pressure via sodium retention, and suggests that needing a sweetener in coffee or tea may indicate dependence on sweetness. She then covers a newly developed, validated Food Noise Questionnaire (FNQ) published in Obesity to measure intrusive food-related rumination, highlighting its five Likert-scale items, study sample characteristics, and the need for further research, including effects of GLP-1 drugs.

Natural Ways to Boost GLP-1

For this week's Metabolic Classroom lecture, Dr. Bikman focuses on natural ways to boost GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1), a powerful gut hormone involved in appetite control, blood sugar regulation, and metabolic health.Ben begins by explaining that GLP-1 is secreted in response to food intake, influencing glucagon suppression, slowing gastric emptying, and activating satiety centers in the brain. However, research shows that individuals with obesity tend to have a blunted GLP-1 response, particularly after consuming carbohydrates. This means that people with obesity may not experience the same level of fullness and appetite regulation, which can contribute to overeating.Dr. Bikman then discusses concerns with GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy. While they effectively promote weight loss, they also come with significant downsides, including loss of lean mass (up to 40% of total weight lost), increased mental health risks (depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts), and a return of sweet cravings over time. Additionally, 70% of people discontinue these drugs within two years, often regaining weight—primarily as fat—due to muscle loss during treatment. He then presents natural methods to enhance GLP-1 production without drugs. His lab at BYU found that Yerba Mate significantly increases GLP-1 by 40-50%, likely due to its ferulic acid content and bitter taste receptors that also reduce sweet cravings. Allulose, a rare sugar, has also been shown to stimulate GLP-1 and improve glucose control, even in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Other natural boosters include a low-carbohydrate, protein-rich diet, which triples GLP-1 levels compared to a low-fat diet, collagen peptides, which enhance GLP-1 secretion and insulin sensitivity, and quality sleep, since poor sleep is linked to impaired GLP-1 signaling and increased hunger.Dr. Bikman concludes by emphasizing that leveraging diet and lifestyle changes is the most effective and sustainable way to improve GLP-1 levels, regulate appetite, and support long-term metabolic health. While GLP-1 medications may serve a purpose, particularly for those struggling with carbohydrate cravings, they come with risks that should not be ignored. Instead, strategies such as Yerba Mate, allulose, low-carb diets, collagen peptides, and better sleep can provide natural, lasting benefits without side effects.Show Notes/References:For complete show notes and references referred to in this episode, we invite you to become a Ben Bikman Insider subscriber. [MONDAY MINUTE] Why is Allulose Demand Growing? | Is Allulose Natural? | GLP-1 and Allulose

Allulose is a naturally occurring sugar found in fruits like figs and raisins. According to a recent batch of SPINS innovation index data, Allulose was absurdly out indexing all other sweeteners across the entire grocery store. So, why is allulose banned by Whole Foods Market…and not approved yet for use in Canada and Europe? Maybe because most Allulose is synthesized in a lab, most likely from corn…processed with a genetically modified enzyme. Is Allulose natural…Artificial…GMO or not GMO, heck I enjoy sucralose containing energy drinks daily, so I'm far from the sweetener police. But do the natural CPG entrepreneurs really think that studies showing “Allulose enhanced the GLP-1 activity in rodents” will help clear up the court of public opinion on the trending sweetener? Send us a textNeil Gyte's health journey began at a weight 260 pounds, when he was far from the active and fun father that he wanted to be, and he was clearly on a fast track to an early grave. This moment of clarity gave Neil a sense of determination to change and set him on a journey towards better physical and mental health, largely through ultra-endurance training endeavors. Recently, observing the devastating impact of chronic diseases on his family and loved ones has led him to dive deep into research, searching for the root causes and exploring ways to manage and reverse these conditions. Inspired by this revelation, he has embarked on a new life mission- to Help 1 Billion+ People Become Metabolically Healthy. He and his brother decided to swim Loch Lomond, 22 miles long, with ZERO calories to raise awareness for mental health, metabolic therapy and chronic diseases. The purpose of the swim was to demonstrate the metabolic flexibility of our bodies to utilize fat as a fuel source, highlighting the potential of metabolic therapy as a natural lifestyle and nutrition-based approach which is proving to reverse and prevent many chronic diseases.Find Neil at-LK- @Neil Gytehttps://www.zero-two-lomond.com/https://1bmh.org/https://rxsugar.com/Allulose Links-Allulose: Healthiest Sugar in the World by Dr. Nick Norwitzhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5852736/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30943389/https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0298239Find Boundless Body at- myboundlessbody.com Book a session with us here!
