Don Smith, President, Regional Industrial Development Corporation (RIDC), calls in to talk about their plans post election.
Sacrifice zones are areas where people have been left to live in conditions that threaten life itself, from toxic industrial pollution to the deadly, intensifying effects of man-made climate change. In a more just and less cruel society, the very concept of a “sacrifice zone” wouldn't exist. And yet, in America, after decades of deregulation and public disinvestment, more working-class communities are becoming sacrifice zones, and more of us are being set up for sacrifice at the altars of corporate greed and government abandonment. America's sacrifice zones are no longer extreme outliers; they are, in fact, a harrowing model of the future that lies in store for most of us if the corporate monsters, corporate politicians, and Wall Street vampires destroying our communities aren't stopped. And residents of different sacrifice zones across the country, fellow workers on the frontlines of all this reckless and preventable destruction, are connecting with each other, learning from one another, and working together to fight back. In this Working People liveshow, recorded on Oct. 19 at Red Emma's worker cooperative bookstore, cafe, and community events space in Baltimore, we speak with a special panel of residents from four different sacrifice zones in the US about how the situations they're facing in their own communities and their struggles for justice and accountability are connected. Panelists include: Hilary Flint, communications director of Beaver County Marcellus Awareness Community and a former resident of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, a few miles from the site of the Feb 2023 Norfolk Southern train derailment and chemical disaster in East Palestine, Ohio; Melanie Meade, a community organizer, educator, and life-long resident of Clairton, Pennsylvania, the site of US Steel's Clairton Coke Works, which was named the most toxic air polluter in Allegheny County in a 2021 report by PennEnvironment; Elise Keaton Wade, a real estate attorney by trade, longtime environmental justice activist, and a native of Southern West Virginia; Angela “Angie” Shaneyfelt, a resident of Curtis Bay in South Baltimore, who lives just blocks away from an open air coal terminal owned and operated by rail giant CSX Transportation, which has been polluting her community for generations. In this episode of the Insiders Guide to Energy podcast, hosts Chris Sass and Jeff McAulay welcome Joe Mastrangelo, CEO of EOS Energy Storage, to discuss the transformative potential of long-duration energy storage solutions. Focusing on EOS's innovative zinc-based battery technology, Joe explains the advantages of a non-lithium battery system for applications that demand flexibility, scalability, and safety. He highlights how this eco-friendly, fire-resistant technology offers a promising alternative for sectors requiring durable, sustainable energy solutions, from utilities to industrial applications. Joe shares EOS's journey to establishing a resilient and primarily U.S.-based supply chain—a move that has not only driven growth but also strengthened the company's position amidst global supply chain disruptions. By building in Pennsylvania's Mon Valley, EOS has brought jobs back to an area once defined by manufacturing while creating a streamlined, secure production process. Joe emphasizes the importance of using widely available raw materials, which allows EOS to lower production costs while contributing to the U.S. economy and reducing dependency on foreign supply chains. Listeners interested in renewable energy will appreciate Joe's insights on the demand for long-duration storage, which he sees as essential for a sustainable energy grid. He discusses EOS's growth strategy, including upcoming pilot projects and the critical role of customer trust, bankability, and partnerships in scaling new technologies. This episode offers a compelling look into how EOS Energy Storage is paving the way for a cleaner, more resilient energy infrastructure by overcoming financial, logistical, and technological challenges. On its bad days, Pittsburgh has some weird smells – rotten eggs, from pollution along the Mon Valley. That urine scent from all the ginkgo trees. And sometimes when it rains, it smells like wet dog. But these aren't the scents that local perfume makers think should define the city. We're bringing back a conversation with City Cast's Elizabeth Kauma… to talk about a few Pittsburgh scents that hit all the right notes. We always cite our sources: We spoke with artisanal perfumer Darren Alan, fragrance journalist Patric Rhys, and Scott Kindberg, the artist behind 5:55 Perfumery. Another local perfumer we mention is 837 North. Local journalist Patric Rhys covered the history of fragrance. Loved this episode about scents? I drank rye whiskey in the spiritual home of American rye whiskey, the Monongahela Valley, in the cradle of the Whiskey Rebellion, Washington, PA. I tell you about how the rebellion happened, and how it ended, and how rye whiskey came to southwestern PA. Rye whiskey historian Sam Komlenic joined me for a talk on rye whiskey at Liberty Pole Spirits, and I interviewed Liberty Pole founder Jim Hough. Sam and I also visited the revived Pittsburgh Brewing, and their Iron City Distilling facility, and talked to distiller Matt Strickland. (Of course we sampled some whiskey!) Then we went to Ponfeigh Distilling in Somerset, where they're just getting started. I filled a few shopping bags at the Delallo Italian Marketplace in Jeannette, PA and then hit three good eats places in Washington: Shorty's Lunch, Osso's Pizza, and Al'an Ruben's. Then Sam and his wife Amy went along with me to visit covered bridges...but that didn't work out so well! Great trip to southwest PA and the Mon Valley, the heart of Pennsylvania rye whiskey! Next episode? Well, I'll be honest: I'm not really sure at this point. Guess we'll have to see...in two weeks! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST!
