Can Marx help us navigate the climate crisis, or is de-growth socialism the answer? Join us for an in-depth discussion with Lee Phillips and Matt Huber as we unravel Kohei Saito's controversial interpretations of Marx's writings on natural limits and the metabolic rift which they began this piece for Jacobin. We challenge Saito's redefinitions of crisis theory and dissect whether Marx truly advocated for de-growth, or simply acknowledged environmental concerns within his broader economic theories. This episode promises to illuminate the oft-overlooked complexities of Marx's environmental views and their relevance today. The episode deeply delves into the shifting class composition within the left, from the industrial labor strongholds of the 60s and 70s to the rise of middle-class intellectuals and knowledge workers in contemporary discourse. We analyze how this shift has allowed radical, yet impractical ideas to gain traction, and emphasize the need for a more inclusive and representative left. Our discussion highlights the practical insights of industrial labor, particularly in the context of decarbonization and environmental sustainability, offering a grounded perspective on these pressing issues. We don't stop there. Our conversation also explores the intricate relationship between technology, social labor, and capitalism, critiquing extreme environmental proposals and advocating for the repurposing of existing technologies for a fairer, sustainable future. We delve into the controversial interpretations of Marx by figures like Negri and Saito, and debate the practicality of radical socialist solutions for climate change. Tune in for a thought-provoking episode that challenges conventional wisdom, from prison abolition to viable climate solutions, and promises to provide a historically informed approach to eco-socialism and environmentalism. Jessica Christensen, Mixologist and Beverage Manager, and Robb Stites, head of Communications and Community at Graton Resort and Casino join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. Jessica is a Sonoma County native. She is responsible for all of the drinks at nine different bars at the Graton Resort and Casino. She started as a bartender at Negri's in Occidental when she was 21. After a few years she worked at Calistoga Inn and Brewery. After that, she was recruited to the Graton casino and soon got into management there. The first drink served today, after the soothing and inspiring sound of the cocktail shaker, is an Apricot Pisco cocktail. Pisco is a distilled spirit from Peru with a flavor that is close to rum. Robb Stites had a background in public relations before coming to the casino about two years ago. He describes the philanthropy and in-kind donations that they do as an expression of their commitment to the community. Jessica describes the Apricot Pisco cocktail that is in Steve's glass. It is made with Pisco, Luxardo apricot liqueur, fresh lemon, some acqua fava for the foam and some simple syrup. Acqua fava is technically garbano bean juice, which can produce a foamy texture. (Sometimes bartenders use egg whites for foam, but many people prefer this vegan alternative.) Visit Homerun Pizza, home of the Knuckleball! Fresh pizza dough made from scratch daily, la pizza è deliziosa! There are several bars in the resort; G-Bar is a sports bar and Sky Bar in the lobby has won several polls from Casino Player magazine. Sky Bar is a lounge bar at the center of the venue, Lobby Bar is a little more for craft cocktails, away from the gaming floor. There are also frequent concerts and comedy shows. The swimming pool is open not only to hotel guests now. You can buy day passes now for a cabaña, a lounger or a day bed, those are available seven days a week. Guests can bring food in from another restaurant or order from the poolside menu. The pool bar is right nearby. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. The next cocktail they taste is a new take on a traditional recipe, called a Jalapeño Margarita. It will soon be on the Lobby Bar menu. It has Jalapeño-infused tequila, plus Cointreau, lime juice and agave. Floating on top, there is an Aperol and lime citrus foam. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Jessica describes the pool menu, which is the same as last year and is designed to be quick, fresh and delicious. Kiwi, blueberry, watermelon, mango and spiked lemonade. They also have a cocktail competition called Full Tilt. The first year the competitors were mostly from north bay but this year they will open it to bartenders from all over the Bay Area. One portion of the competition will be Iron Chef style, where the competitors get a set of ingredients they have to work with. This year it will focus on agave-based drinks. The Campari group is the sponsor.

Creatures that are similar to the North American Bigfoot have been sighted on every continent except Antarctica, Australia based author and researcher George Mitrovic told host George Noory. While they vary in size, from the seven to eight foot tall Bigfoot to smaller creatures, they are all examples of hairy wild men, Mitrovic said. Over the course of his research, he's tracked recorded sightings as far back as the first settling of the West Coast of North America, and he noted that Native American lore about the creatures stretched back even further. Mitrovic said he couldn't say for sure, but opinions were split on whether the creatures seen were more human or more animal. He believes the entities seen around the globe are all related when questioned about the relationship between Bigfoot and the Himalayan Yeti. He noted that while the Yeti was sometimes seen in the high mountain snow fields, they likely lived lower down the mountains where food sources would be more abundant. Mitrovic also questioned why a creature hadn't been shot and killed by a hunter yet, given the large number of recreational hunters in North America.Surprisingly, while Bigfoot is associated with the Pacific Northwest, with some of the earliest recorded sightings coming out of Northern California, Mitrovic said there were more sightings from the area around and near Los Angeles. He also said with the proliferation of trail cameras and thermal cameras, it might only be a matter of time before one is captured on film. “You might start seeing other things you wouldn't have expected,” he added. “Bigfoot might be one of them.” Mitrovic also touched on his research with portals and other cryptids before taking listener questions.  -----------------------------------Psychic and medium Patti Negri is a self-described “good witch.” In the second half of the program, she talked about her journey in Wicca, and her life as a medium. “I actually think I was born that way, while I was a little kid in my suburban Long Beach home,” she told George. She said her mom would ask her why she was picking wild herbs and placing them in her purse, and only as an adult did she learn that the herbs she was picking were used in spells to attract money. She said one of the benefits of witchcraft is being able to take control of your own fate. “Water runs downhill, and life in its normal path will just kind of run downhill. To me, witchcraft means I'm going to build a dam.” Continuing the analogy, she said bad magic would be hoarding all of that water once you'd built the dam – instead of sharing the blessing – and that has negative karmic impacts. “What you put out, you get back three times, (and that's) not even karma. So why would I put out hexes and curses? Why not put out love and abundance?” She also discussed her experience as a “good vibes” vampire, and how that differs from the traditional idea of blood drinking vampires, as well as the different types of education she has experienced and the educational opportunities she offers.Negri then touched on her work with ghost hunters like Zak Bagans, and the popularity of haunted items such as haunted dolls. She told George not all haunted dolls were bad and that, like people, most ghosts weren't bad either. She closed the program by answering listener questions and providing quick readings on areas of concern. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

Millennials Are Killing Capitalism
“We Make Ourselves Different in the Struggle” - Michael Hardt's The Subversive Seventies

Millennials Are Killing Capitalism

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 14, 2024 75:09

This is part 1 of a 2-part conversation on Michael Hardt's recent book The Subversive Seventies.  Michael Hardt teaches political theory in the Literature Program at Duke University. He is co-author, with Antonio Negri, of the Empire trilogy and, most recently, Assembly. He is co-director with Sandro Mezzadra of The Social Movements Lab.  A couple of things I need to say up front. This conversation was recorded in September and initially would have been released in October, but obviously our programming took a quick turn to solidarity work on the Palestinian struggle in light of those events. As I mentioned in the intro to our most recent episode we will continue to do that solidarity work primarily though not exclusively through our YouTube page for a while just so that we can get some of these other conversations out on the podcast feed. Nonetheless, this conversation and the book and the problems it poses I think are as interesting and relevant today as they were in September. I mostly note it's recording date for two reasons, one it will be glaring that we don't talk at all about events in Palestine in the conversation. The second reason I mention the date is that in the intervening months Michael Hardt's long-time collaborator Antonio Negri passed away. Negri was of course a very serious and renowned political philosopher, militant organizer, and a political prisoner, coming out of some of the very movements that Michael Hardt discusses in this book. May he rest in peace and our condolences to Michael for the loss of his friend and collaborator. This discussion is about Michael Hardt's book The Subversive Seventies which was one of the more interesting books we read last year on the podcast. And we would definitely recommend it both for its value as a historical text as well as for the theoretical work Hardt is engaged in in the text. As is laid out quite well I think on the publisher's website, it is a book that attempts to reconstruct the history of revolutionary politics in the 1970's, to systematically approach political movements of the seventies within a global framework of analysis, and to bring together a wide range of political movements from the decade highlighting the ways movements in different countries resonated with and were inspired by one another. Part 2 of the conversation will be released this coming week.  I would also be remiss if I didn't say rest in power to Sekou Odinga who passed away earlier this week. We hope to be able to do more in honor of him and as a tribute to his legacy in the coming weeks and years.  If you appreciate the work we do, our work is only possible through the support of our patrons. Recording of a discussion last Saturday with Michael Hardt at Woodbine for a discussion of his new book The Subversive Seventies and our contemporary autonomist experiments in Queens, Atlanta, and elsewhere.Michael Hardt is a philosopher and political theorist whose work focuses on autonomist social movements since the 1960s. In his books co-authored with Antonio Negri - Empire, Multitude, and Commonwealth - Hardt theorized the changes in capitalism and struggle taking place at the turn of the 21st century. The frameworks Hardt and Negri developed together were among the most popular and influential political theories influencing the activism of the last 25 years, helping define the movement contexts that birthed spaces like Woodbine. In his new book, The Subversive Seventies, Hardt focuses on dozens of movement predecessors, including Black autoworkers and militants in the US, intersectional radical feminists, gay liberation revolutionaries, the Italian autonomists, and antinuclear activists. While the radicalism of the 70s is often understood as responding to the defeat of the spirit of '68, Hardt argues that these movements, by pursuing their own agendas without claiming supremacy over other struggles, developed a model of contemporary intersectionality that solidified as an antithetical pole to neoliberal globalization.
