Anthony Masiello—a devoted father who, after years of battling obesity and life-threatening health issues, received a wake-up call that changed everything. In 2005, weighing 360 pounds and denied life insurance, Anthony was faced with the realization that he might not be there to see his children grow up. Determined to change his fate, he embraced a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle, shedding 160 pounds and reversing chronic health conditions like migraines, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. Flash forward 15 years, and he's thriving. His incredible journey has been featured in media outlets such as PBS, The Huffington Post, Forks Over Knives, and Runner's World, and as the co-founder and CEO of Love.Life Telehealth—a wellness network focused on addressing the root causes of chronic disease and offering holistic solutions—he continues to inspire and drive change in healthcare. Join us today as we dive into his powerful story! “What made you change at age 33? The spark was being denied that life insurance policy. My wife was pregnant with our second son. And, I wanted to, as a father and as a provider for my family, I wanted to make sure that my family would be taken care of if something happened to me. It wasn't like I was going through the formalities of getting a life insurance policy. Like, this is something that I was proud to be putting in place for my family. So if something happened, they would be able to, you know, to take care of themselves. And... getting denied was, um, you know, like a ton of bricks coming down. not only would they not give me the insurance, so I couldn't be proud to know that if something did happen to me, that my family would be able to take care of themselves, the fact that they didn't think I was going to make it 20 years was even more hard to take because here I am holding an infant with a, you know, with an 18-month-old toddler running around. So my focus was eating more, eating more fruits and vegetables every single day. And I was letting that naturally crowd out all the other stuff that I should be eating less of. So I didn't start with a, with a hard line on no cheese. I didn't start with a hard line on no bread. Or flours or. It wasn't necessarily as conscious. It's kind of what I heard. I was working in pharmaceutical research and I had more of an informatics role there where I was helping with, you know, data analysis to help bring new drugs to market. I was really excited about that when I started working there because I thought it was an opportunity to help people. And, through my own transformation, I realized, wow, I would rather help people to not need medications to come up with new medicines that may or may not help people to actually feel better.” - Anthony Masiello What we discuss in this episode: - How Anthony's struggle with weight became central to his identity, along with the health complications he faced. - The pivotal early months of his journey, what sparked his shift to a vegan lifestyle, and how he built a new, health-transforming way of eating. - How he overcame cravings and avoided unhealthy foods. - The role of exercise in his weight loss and overall health. - Anthony's keystone habits and advice for lasting lifestyle change. - A look into his daily meals and how he stays nourished. - How Love.Life Telehealth empowers people to take control of their health—and Anthony's role in driving this movement. In part 1 we examined the massively misleading opening claim of the abstract of the new study “Long-term weight loss effects of semaglutide in obesity without diabetes in the SELECT trial” by Ryan et al, published in the journal naturemedicine, and we looked at the magnitude of the conflicts of the authors. Neuroplasticity refers to the lifelong capacity of the brain to change and rewire itself in response to the stimulation of learning and experience. The wiring together of brain cells makes the new behavior feel routine and easier over time. It requires about 10,000 repetitions — translating to a minimum of three months of practice — to develop a new neural pathway and master a new pattern of behavior. This timeframe can fluctuate as each brain is unique. New science in relation to people being motivated to make changes shows the following data: People who were part of an accountability group ~ coaching ~ or mentorship program had better results and stayed with the changes longer than those who tried on their own. The idea that people have to be motivated to start is completely false. Most people who made dietary changes started before they were motivated and built momentum and motivation as they had success. 9 Steps to Retrain Your Brain and Create New Habits That Lead to Sustained Weight Loss #1 Be Aware of Your Thoughts ~ Thoughts Become Things #2 Turn Negatives into Positives ~ Reframing ~ challenges = opportunities #3 Understand What Derails You ~ Pattern Recognition and Reassignment #4 Create a Personal Mantra ~ Your Mind Works On Frequency ~ The words you speak = you identity #5 Practice Daily Gratitude ~ Gratitude Grounds You And Minimizes Emotional Decisions ~ you don't fall into a positive mindset, but you can for sure fall into a negative one ~ you have to MOVE into positivity #6 Reciprocity Ripple (Boomerang Effect) ~ You Get What You Give ~ You see the world as you are ~ the lens of perspective #7 Connection to Community #8 Enhance Your Environment ~ Your Inputs Dictate Your Outcomes #9 Powerful Daily Routine ~ Discipline : Process : Repeat If you love the show, it would mean the world to me if you'd like it, share it, and review it. Did you know it takes approximately 10,000 repetitions, equivalent to a dedicated three months of practice, to forge a new neural pathway and master a fresh behavioral pattern? Every brain is unique, so this timeframe may vary. Discover the power of motivation in making lasting changes. Our data shows that individuals in accountability groups, coaching, or mentorship programs achieved better results and sustained their transformations longer than those going solo. So February is when most people have ditched the New Year's Resolutions. The majority of people who want to lose weight as a resolution get extreme with ‘dieting' or following some fad eating plan to get the unwanted pounds off , they end up stopping before they really start. My guest this week knows that feeling all too well. David Medansky refers to himself as the ‘Anti Diet Advocate', and up until about 5 years ago, had battled being overweight and unsuccessful at not just losing the weight, but keeping it off. He has been able to focus on THE BASICS with simplicity and not only lost 50 pounds since 2016, but successfully keep it off and maintain a lifestyle that works for him. He says managing your weight is a marathon with no finish line–but can be managed with the right plan. And he's just written a book with his process. Listen in and walk away with not only the 9 easily done tips to get you on your way, but a fresh perspective on your goal. ***************************************** The Ultimate Journey of Self care is proud to be sponsored by BUOY Hydration - the newest in ‘squeezable' hydration products! Amy Lang is one of my favorite people in fitness and wellbeing — and she's a favorite of listeners of this podcast, too. More people downloaded my interview with Amy from 2020 than any other episode of the show. It's easy to see why. Amy has tons of experience and expertise, and she's a font of knowledge and enthusiasm for anyone trying to reach the older market.Plus — and this is amazing — she closed her successful gym in San Francisco to start an online coaching business right before the pandemic hit.Since then, her Moxie Club has grown, and her own podcast — Happy and Healthy with Amy Lang — is doing great.Amy joins me again on this week's episode of the Optimal Aging podcast. We catch up on her success since our last interview — and we talk about Amy's focus on building healthy habits that stick — a topic that's particularly relevant this time of year, when people are struggling with their new year's resolutions.Resources and LinksAmy's Moxie ClubNaamly -- Support our advertiser, who helps you keep in touch with your members#10YearChallengeWordleAirTable

In this episode we speak with Rocky Haire and Valerie Maclin about their unique science-based approach to sustained weight loss. Rocky & Valeris are the founders of SKINNY, a comprehensive weight loss program that is truly unique among other programs that claim to help their clients lose weight. Just as unique is Rocky and Valerie's path to founding SKINNY. Rocky is a practicing personal injury attorney and Valerie is a personal trainer and a nutritionist. Rocky was inspired by a noticeable change in Valerie's appearance due to a new diet regimen that she had been trying out. He decided to try it himself and experienced the same noticeable results. They were both so impressed with how they looked and felt that they wanted to help others see the same success. And out of that, SKINNY was born. Valerie and Rocky have created a program that goes far beyond the average diet plan. For example, Valerie helps clients get a true understanding of what their ideal weight should be and how to achieve that goal with a specific tailored eating plan for each individual. The accountability that clients receive is a game changer that even includes free maintenance for life. They are truly dedicated to helping people not only lose weight, but to keep it off. SKINNY is a complete lifestyle overhaul and Valerie and Rocky offer the support needed to help their clients succeed. The one question people keep asking when it comes to biblical weight loss and health - what is the KEY verse that keeps you focused? PLUS I have an announcement in this podcast only. Listen to learn what is coming next!
Learn the secrets to radically improving your health from “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll, who lost 265 pounds and kept it off! At Chuck's heaviest, he weighed 420 pounds and had amassed a 66-inch waist while requiring a size 6xl shirt. Fearing that his life was spiraling out of control and nearing an end, he opted to undergo weight loss surgery. Prior to the procedure he was convinced that the drastic measure would become like all the other failed attempts to lose weight. At least, he thought, he could go to his grave confident that he tried everything. Chuck was just 27 years old at the time and didn’t think he would live to see 30. But then the unexpected happened. He woke up from the surgery and never looked back. Although a critical component, the surgery proved only to be the first step in his journey. In fact, he only attributes 10 percent of his weight loss success to the procedure. In just over a year, Chuck shed 265 pounds by conquering food addiction and devoting himself to a healthier lifestyle. He’s now maintaining weight loss by eating a plant-based diet. Going plant-based once seemed unthinkable to Chuck, but now it’s going back to eating processed meat and dairy that would be inconceivable. The confidence he gained from the weight loss enabled him to pursue his dream of becoming a sports reporter. He has hosted a number of radio shows with NFL players. One of the players gave him the nickname “The Weight Loss Champion” after news of his transformation spread through the locker room. In this episode, we chat with Chuck about: Breaking food addiction Sustaining weight loss His eating habits growing up His failed diet attempts When he realized he was addicted to food His emotional experiences of being 420 pounds The secret to keeping the weight off Where a lot of people go wrong when trying to lose weight and much more Resources: Follow Chuck on Twitter and Instagram Listen to Chuck's Podcast Visit Chuck's website Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss future episodes! What do I need to do? It's almost always the wrong question that we ask when creativity seems to have been lost. When you're stuck and the journals and books you've been reading and going to the masterminds and conventions and seminars you've been attending haven't led to any breakthroughs. When your notepads full of "proven best practices" should have brought you to the next level but haven't. In this paradigm-shifting work, serial entrepreneur Patrick Gentempo explains why the primary question you need to ask as a business leader is "Who should we be?” Dr. Patrick Gentempo is the founder and CEO of Action Potential Holdings, Inc. He is often referred to as the “Philosopher-Entrepreneur”. He is a well-known and respected star in the world of health, wellness and business. He has key-noted hundreds of presentations around the world. While practicing as a chiropractor, he co-developed innovative diagnostic technologies, received patents and built a considerable international business of which he was the CEO for over 20 years. Leveraging his ‘applied philosophy’ approach, he has successfully launched over a dozen companies. As Dr. Gentempo likes to say, “Everyone has a philosophy, the only question is whether they know it or not!” He lives in Park City, Utah with his wife Laurie and 3 children. Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Today we’re continuing our conversation about grains with family physician, nutritional researcher, president of the Nutritional Research Foundation and best-selling author Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He and I discuss the role that plant foods have in promoting overall health, especially whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. If you are concerned about the potentially negative impact that these foods might have on your health, including inflammation or compromising autoimmune states, you need to hear the clinical information that Dr. Fuhrman shares regarding the ability of these foods to actually reverse such conditions. And if you feel that you’re living in fear of the future of your health, I know you will feel encouraged by the simple and meaningful steps that Dr. Fuhrman shares to help you start feeling better today. Key Takeaways: [1:10] We’re wrapping up our conversation about grains with Dr. Joel Fuhrman, nutritional researcher and advocate for a whole grains nutritarian diet. [2:10] Dr. Fuhrman shares success stories of the diet that is most effective at reversing aging and slowing cancer, alleviating fibromyalgia, allergies, and autoimmune disease. [4:24] An overview of the nutritarian diet, which is rich in anti-cancer and micronutrients but doesn’t miss any nutrients that can help human health and longevity. [6:17] Understanding the plant-derived G-BOMBS (grains, berries, onions, beans, mushrooms, and seeds) diet and its scientifically-based anticancer effects. [8:10] Scientific studies that have proven the negative effects of increasing animal proteins in your diet include shortened lifespan and risk of cancer and cardiovascular death. [10:39] What dietary choices would you be willing to make in order to extend your lifespan to nearly 100 years? [11:50] Sensitivities to the richest source of resistant starch — beans — are not reason enough to eliminate them and their benefits from a healthy gut diet, including the second meal phenomenon. [14:27] Eating these four foods, including soybeans, will offer the most health benefits to the lining of your digestive tract. [15:53] The three ways that you can gather information to make the most informed and beneficial decisions for your gut health, and the advancement of our genetics that optimize the nutrients that come from G-BOMBS. [18:55] The importance of raw versus cooked foods, which ones offer aroma taste inhibitors, angiogenesis inhibitors, fat storage, and cancer cell promotion, and how to best prepare each for your diet. [25:24] Dr. Fuhrman’s retreat programs offer the opportunity to learn how you can make drastic lifestyle changes that can change your health for the better — and for good. [28:42] The psychological benefits and transformations that come with overcoming unhealthy food addictions to better control our health destiny. [32:54] It’s time to stop living in fear of the future of your health. Dr. Fuhrman’s mission is to bring people hope of living a better life, free of pain and free of fear. We believed that fat was the problem with obesity, but biology is not so straight forward.” Dr. Mark Hyman Paid advertisement The role of dietary fat as part of a healthy nutritional health plan is undergoing a massive shift over the past few years. All the most current research is showing that the fears most people have had about real food-based fats being a contributing factor in obesity, heart disease, and diabetes is simply not true. Now one of the biggest names in the world of health is standing up in support of a high-fat diet. His name is Dr. Mark Hyman from DrHyman.com and he is one of the most recognized media doctors for his work as the Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine and founder and medical director of The UltraWellness Center. Renegade Thinkers Unite: #2 Podcast for CMOs & B2B Marketers
Let’s face it – simple is hard, especially in B2B marketing. It’s so easy to get caught up in flashy features, complicated jargon, and complex campaign strategies that we forget what marketing is all about – making buying easier. Faced with this challenge of persuading people, many CMOs are struggling to keep things simple. Margaret Molloy is not one of those CMOs. As the Global Chief Marketing Officer of Siegel+Gale, Margaret has mastered the art of persuading people with simple, but powerful messaging. She points her success to two key foundations: having permission to fail and the effectiveness of fact-based storytelling. The lessons she has to share are not only coming from her experience at Siegel+Gale, but also from what she learned by exploring her own passion project, the #WearingIrish initiative. In this episode, Drew and Margaret talk about how to keep things simple in B2B marketing and explain the four main traits of successful CMOs. Margaret describes her experience with her passion project, the #WearingIrish initiative, and how CMOs could be growing and learning from their own side hustle. Margaret is a bundle of B2B wisdom, click here to listen to her story. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts – Stitcher – or Podsearch What You’ll Learn Keeping marketing simple is hard, but these 2 foundations make it easier B2B marketing is all about making a buying decision easier for a customer. Even though there are thousands of experts and opinions in the industry, Drew and Margaret both believe in the idea of simple marketing - a Renegade approach to marketing that makes everything approachable and easy to understand. Simple marketing focuses on encouraging and persuading people to act. But a CMO cannot pursue this path without these 2 foundations: internal company support and a solid fact base. Without these tools to lean on, a CMO is more likely to get distracted and lose sight of the true company goal. Artful, courageous simple marketing follows after these foundations have been laid. Successful CMOs exhibit these 5 behaviors that lead to better simple marketing campaigns Great CMOs are fundamentally simplifiers. They’re always working towards boiling down ideas into easy-to-digest pieces of information. Margaret explains that throughout her career as a marketer and creator, the best CMOs consistently exhibit these 5 behaviors. They’re purpose-driven They’re fact-based, but they have an imagination They are bold and brave in prioritization (they say no often) They create and empower smaller teams They execute on company and brand promises These behaviors allow a CMO to focus on what truly matters in their marketing campaign. Margaret uses her passion project #WearingIrish to help her role as a CMO - and you can too Margaret’s native country is Ireland and even while working as a top CMO she knew she wanted to bring global exposure to Irish creators. That’s why she created the #WearingIrish initiative. She is telling the untold story of Irish fashion design and learning skills that are transferable to her CMO role as well. Margaret explains that this passion project has given her an opportunity to have an “experimentation lab” that is separate from the risks and responsibilities associated with Siegel+Gale. It also allowed her to develop a higher sense of empathy for other companies and her CMO clients. No matter where your personal interests may lie, the stories shared on this episode of Renegade Thinkers Unite show that they can always be used to benefit your company and your own professional work. In this week’s episode of Food, Sex & Life for the Modern Woman, Tawnee Prazak takes us through her journey of developing an eating disorder during her college years, and how she came out of that, recovering into what she has become now: a Holistic Endurance Coach. We go over the damages a woman’s body goes through when she’s an endurance athlete with the typical nutrition plan. She talks to us about getting real with the voices in our head and overcoming them, healing our bodies with functional medicine, what a healthy diet plan for women will look like to reach fat adaptation. We’ve talked a lot about functional medicine on the podcast previously. To get more in depth on the subject check out this interview: What the ‘Bleep’ is Functional Medicine with Dr. Cole. Functional Medicine and Endurance Sports Most of us are overtraining for what is healthy for us without the proper nutrition. It’s not just a matter of going out for a long run, and eating all our calories back with low quality foods. “We need to fuel to train, not train to fuel” This is Tawnee’s sweet spot. Working with clients to find out exactly where their bodies are at in terms of hormone health and gut health, and making the changes necessary to still participate in endurance sports in the best health. On the podcast, she goes over some of the tests that can be ordered online to get this process started. There is so much good information in this episode, you’ll want to listen in a few times. What is Fat Adaptation? First and foremost, this is not for someone who has not found hormonal balance or hasn’t dealt with their autoimmune symptoms. This is for someone in optimal health. In Tawnee’s words, this is the healthiest you can do for your body. It entails eating a lot of fat. And unfortunately, in the US we have been taught that fat is bad. There are evil fats out there, ie: donuts, twinkies, too much pizza, etc. And there are good fats, generally in the form of oils, ie: coconut oil. Fat adaptation is when the body uses fat for energy, rather than carbs or sugars. But we have to drastically reduce our carbohydrate and sugar intake to train the body to burn our fat instead. The bodies preferred energy source are carbs and sugars because they’re more readily available as glucose, whereas fat has to be converted into glucose in order to be burned for energy. The beauty of increasing our healthy fat intake, is that it helps us break out of carb and sugar addiction. It doesn’t mean you don’t eat carbs. It ‘s all about timing your macro nutrients and consuming quality carbs. Listen in to learn what Tawnee recommends for timing your carbs, fasted trainings, and differences between what works for men and what works best for women. Tawnee’s 3 Habits to Ensure Her Health Journey: Infrared Sauna- very meditative Walking- her aha moment Interaction with water- It’s very therapeutic. Just float and feel it. Cold thermogenesis has many benefits as well. Not the first time we hear one of our guests rave about the benefits of plain ol’ walking. Check out The Four Pillars of Weight Loss- Part IV, Exercise with Jason Seib to learn more about how walking can be even more beneficial than any other exercise. Tawnee’s Bio: Tawnee Prazak, MS, CSCS, of Laguna Beach, Calif., is a holistic endurance coach, multisport athlete and host/owner of the Endurance Planet podcast. She’s been involved in the endurance world for a decade, both as a competitive triathlete and also as one of today’s leading experts on endurance training, racing, nutrition, strength training and athlete wellness. Her own journey of recovering from being “fit but unhealthy” shaped her philosophy as a coach, and she now focuses on helping athletes optimize health and performance with cutting-edge and often “unconventional” techniques. She consults with athletes of all levels worldwide, and you can tune in to new podcasts on Endurance Planet twice a week. When not coaching or podcasting, Tawnee can be found running the trails, stand-up paddleboarding in the ocean, practicing yoga, swinging kettlebells, or in the kitchen creating the latest healthy meal. These products and services are not about us being obsessive---it’s all about opportunities---everyone of us has the ability to make changes in our lives that can benefit us today, tomorrow, next month, next year, and for the rest of our lives!" Therese Pasqualoni, truly believes that---“It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being healthier!” The Strike it Healthy® Weight and Health Management Systems philosophy encompasses three main concepts. 1- “learn about reputable information” to afford us power to improve our knowledge. 2- “develop critical thinking skills” to enable us to make healthy choices.” And 3- “surround ourselves with a strong support system” to encourage each other to pursue healthier and safer lifestyle behaviors.
