Discussion Opening at the West Village Theatre in Calgary June 19 through June 28, Full Circle Theatre presents Much Ado About Nothing. While the show has closed prior to the release of this episode, it was in fact recorded just as the show was beginning. Kyle sits down with producer and costumer Erin Weir to discuss the production's development and what Much Ado About Nothing's history and meaning brings to the stage even before Full Circle Theatre presents it. This is the first part of a two stage interview. Program: About the Show: In this witty, whip-smart tale of love, loyalty, and lies, Beatrice and Benedick find themselves caught in a battle of barbs, while Hero and Claudio's picture-perfect romance threatens to unravel. Trust—both earned and broken—is at the heart of it all. Set in a world just beyond war's end, this production explores what happens when the fighting stops but the real emotional stakes begin. Tension simmers beneath every joke, secret, and stolen glance, as friendships, reputations, and relationships are put to the test. Directed by longtime collaborator John Knight, and featuring Riverona alumni Megan Baldrey and CJ Gordon as Beatrice and Benedick, this Much Ado blends sharp comedy with a darker edge—revealing just how much trust can cost us. This production is presented in association with The Shakespeare Company, Calgary's lean and mean classical theatre company, committed to bold, innovative approaches to the Bard's work

In this episode of Enrich Your Future, Andrew and Larry Swedroe discuss Larry's new book, Enrich Your Future: The Keys to Successful Investing. In this series, they discuss Chapter 26: Dollar Cost Averaging.LEARNING: Invest all your money whenever you have it. “If you want to put the odds in your favor, which is the best we can do because we don't have clear crystal balls, you should put all your money in whenever you have it to invest.”Larry Swedroe In this episode of Enrich Your Future, Andrew and Larry Swedroe discuss Larry's new book, Enrich Your Future: The Keys to Successful Investing. The book is a collection of stories that Larry has developed over 30 years as the head of financial and economic research at Buckingham Wealth Partners to help investors. You can learn more about Larry's Worst Investment Ever story on Ep645: Beware of Idiosyncratic Risks.Larry deeply understands the world of academic research and investing, especially risk. Today, Andrew and Larry discuss Chapter 26: Dollar Cost Averaging.Chapter 26: Dollar Cost AveragingIn this chapter, Larry discusses why lump sum investing is better than dollar cost averaging.Should you invest your money all at once or spread it over time?According to Larry, the issue of Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) typically arises when an investor receives a large lump sum of money and wonders if they should invest it all at once or spread it over time. The same problem arises when an investor panics and sells when confronted with a bear market, but then there are two questions: How does the investor decide when it is safe to reenter the market? And does she reinvest all at once or by DCA?Constantinides, a University of Chicago professor in the 1960s, studied this question. He demonstrated that DCA is an inferior strategy to lump sum investing. He termed it logically dumb as it makes no sense based on an expected return outcome. From a purely financial perspective, the logical answer is that if you have money to invest, you should always invest it whenever it's available.Another paper by John Knight and Lewis Mandell compared DCA to a buy-and-hold strategy. Then, it analyzed the strategies across a series of investor profiles from risk-averse to aggressive. They concluded that DCA had no advantage over the two alternative investment strategies. Combined with their graphical analysis, their numerical trial and empirical evidence favored optimal rebalancing and buy-and-hold strategy over dollar cost averaging. Optimal rebalancing refers to the strategy of adjusting the proportions of assets in a portfolio to maintain a desired level of risk and return.Dollar cost averaging versus lump sum investingKnight and Mandell conducted a backtest to compare the performance of DCA versus LSI (lump sum investing). Backtesting is a simulation technique to evaluate the performance of a trading strategy using historical data. They backtested the two strategies between 1926 and 2010. Transaction costs were ignored (favoring DCA, which involves more trading). The authors assumed the initial portfolio was $1 million in cash, and the...

Dr. John Knight Lundwall joins InnerVerse to discuss his groundbreaking book, Mythos and Cosmos: Mind and Meaning in the Oral Age. Picking up the torch where hundreds of years of academia missed the mark, Dr. Lundwall guides our understanding of mythology as a technical language akin to scientific jargon, exposes the epistemological wall between literacy and orality, explains the analogical aspect of oral myth via the example of human sacrifices, and ponders why oral cultures did not keep histories as we know them. In the Plus+ Extension we turn our discussion towards the category error of modernity to consider oral rites and stories as religion, question just what religion is through the example of the cult of state mandated "public health," the Renaissance prodigy Camillo and what his memory theater informs us of our own potential to recall complex ideas, the relationship between light pollution and literacy, and what it means to marry the best of both the oral and literary mind. Session Title  Digitally Occupied: Alienation, Autonomy and Resilience  Session Details This session will cover the learnings from a number of years research into digital workers' occupational experience. Findings from a four-week diary study, using online data collection and a variety of elicitation methods will be presented in detail. The data points to a need to extend Wilcock's framework in order to account for the knowledge component, implicit to this type of work. Lastly, a number of tools and frameworks developed in the course of the overall research project to help build autonomy and resilience are presented. These tools were developed with the research cohort over a number of collaborative workshops but have never been presented or published so far.  For more and how to register for future seminars, see: https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/occupation/

Over a decade has passed since Stewart Conn was Edinburgh's Makar or Poet Laureate, yet the city continues to exert its influence upon him. His latest collection Aspects of Edinburgh maps the city as well as his fascination with its buildings, history and people. Conn was born in 1936, growing up mainly in Kilmarnock, where his father was a minister. He worked at the BBC from 1962, mainly as a radio drama producer, becoming Head of Radio Drama, until he resigned in 1992. Publications include An Ear to the Ground (Poetry Book Society Choice); Stolen Light (shortlisted for the Saltire Prize), The Breakfast Room (2011 Scottish Poetry Book of the Year) and a new and selected volume The Touch of Time (Bloodaxe). In our latest podcast, Conn discusses his collaboration with illustrator John Knight, and how he was initially wary of writing about the capital because he isn't a native.

In the town of Yamanaka in Western Japan, wild boars are a threat to local farming. With the extinction of natural predators, the boars run rampant, leaving hunters like Sakura Yoshida to patrol the area. This pits boars against humans, but Sakura approaches the boars with veneration and a deep understing of the ecosystem they both inhabit. In this episode of Proof, author Hannah Kirshner takes us along for a ride with Sakura and recounts the history of meat eating in Japan. This episode draws on the "Year of the Boars" chapter in Hannah Kirshner's Water, Wood, and Wild Things. Dr. John Knight helped oversee a global competition to produce a more affordable dialysis system. He discusses challenges that face users of dialysis, including the exorbitant cost that makes members of poorer countries more vulnerable to kidney disease deaths, the competition The George Institute set up to find a more cost-effective alternative, and  the innovative result and how it may help people across the globe. Dr. John Knight is a Professorial Fellow of the Renal and Metabolic Division and Professor of Medicine at UNSW Sydney and is Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics and Child health at their Children's Hospital. He was in private practice for several years focusing on pediatric chronic kidney disease. He recently joined a non-profit medical research group called The George Institute for Global Health in Sydney.  He describes their focus on questions about kidney treatment around the world including dialysis complications and chronic kidney disease: dialysis is highly successful but highly expensive. In most western countries, the community picks up the cost through taxes. The rest of the world can't afford that and many die from their kidney disease instead of receiving dialysis. Around 10 million world-wide need dialysis but only about 2.6 million are able to get it.  Knight describes the global competition called the Affordable Dialysis Prize, which The George Institute organized with the following terms: inventors should invent a low cost dialysis that uses solar power, is portable, can purify water from any source, and costs less than $1000 to manufacture. Dr. Knight tells listeners about the winner, about the group called Ellen Medical Devices Party, Ltd., he created to manufacture it, and describes the next phase of making it available worldwide to address dialysis complications and chronic kidney disease. Not the faint hearted.  We head back to early America for this episode, as we explore anti-Indian propaganda in literature from the 1780s. In 1782 Colonel William Crawford led a military expedition into the Ohio Valley.  His campaign was defeated by the people he had come to attack and the Colonel was taken into captivity, tortured, and executed. The gruesome details of Crawford's death were published in an account written by eyewitness John Knight in a volume published by noted Indian hater Hugh Henry Brackenridge.  The resultant document is a potent piece of anti-Indian propaganda that is needs to be understood in the troubling context of the time which produced it.
